Lexham English Bible (LEB)
Version
Leviticus 16:29-18:30

29 “And this shall be a lasting statute[a] for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you must deny yourselves and you must not do any work, whether the native or[b] the alien who is dwelling in your midst, 30 because on this day he shall make atonement for you to cleanse you; you must be clean from all your sins before[c] Yahweh. 31 It is a Sabbath of complete rest[d] for you, and you shall deny yourselves—it is a lasting statute.[e] 32 And the priest who is anointed and who is ordained[f] to serve as a priest in place of his father shall make atonement; thus[g] he shall put on the linen garments, the holy garments, 33 and he shall make atonement for the sanctuary’s holy place, and he shall make atonement for the tent of assembly and the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all of the assembly’s people. 34 And this shall be a lasting statute[h] for you to make atonement for the Israelites[i] one time in a year from all their sins.”

The Place of Sacrifice

17 Then[j] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the Israelites,[k] and you shall say to them, ‘This is the word that Yahweh has commanded, saying, Any man[l] from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox or a sheep or a goat in the camp or who slaughters it outside the camp[m] and he does not bring it to the tent of assembly’s entrance to present an offering to Yahweh before[n] Yahweh’s tabernacle, then[o] that man shall be accounted bloodguilty—he has poured out blood, and that man shall be cut off from the midst of his people. This is so that the Israelites[p] may bring their sacrifices that they are sacrificing in the open field[q] and bring[r] them for Yahweh to the tent of assembly’s entrance to the priest, and they shall sacrifice fellowship offerings for Yahweh with them. And the priest shall sprinkle the blood on Yahweh’s altar at the tent of assembly’s entrance, and he shall burn[s] the fat as an appeasing fragrance for Yahweh. And they may no longer sacrifice[t] their sacrifices to the goat-idols after which they were prostituting. This is a lasting statute[u] for them throughout[v] their generations.”’

Instructions Against Eating Blood

“And you shall say to them, ‘if there is anyone[w] from the house of Israel or[x] from the alien who dwells in their midst who offers a burnt offering or a sacrifice and he does not bring it to the tent of assembly’s entrance to sacrifice[y] it for Yahweh, then[z] that man shall be cut off from his people. 10 And if there is anyone[aa] from the house of Israel or[ab] from the alien who is dwelling in their midst who eats any blood, then[ac] I will set my face against the person who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from among his people. 11 Indeed[ad] the flesh’s life is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your lives, because it is the blood with the life that makes atonement. 12 Therefore[ae] I said to the Israelites,[af]None of you[ag] may eat blood, nor[ah] may the alien who is dwelling in your midst eat blood.’

13 “And if there is anyone[ai] from the Israelites[aj] or[ak] from the alien who is dwelling in their midst who hunts a wild game animal or a bird that may be eaten, then[al] he shall pour out its blood, and he shall cover it with the soil. 14 Indeed,[am] the life of all flesh, its blood, is in its life, so[an] I said to the Israelites,[ao] ‘You may not eat the blood of any flesh, because the life of all flesh is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.’

15 “And if there is any person who eats a dead body or[ap] a mangled carcass, whether among the native or[aq] among the alien, then[ar] he shall wash his garments, and he shall wash himself[as] with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening, and he shall be clean. 16 But[at] if he does not wash his garments[au] and he does not wash his body, then[av] he shall bear his guilt.”

Unlawful Sexual Relations

18 Then[aw] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the Israelites,[ax] and say to them, ‘I am Yahweh your God. You must not carry out[ay] the practices of the land of Egypt, in which you lived, and you must not carry out[az] the practices of the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you; and you must not follow their statutes. You must carry out[ba] my regulations, and you must observe[bb] my statutes by following them; I am Yahweh your God. And you shall observe[bc] my statutes and my regulations by which the person doing them shall live;[bd] I am Yahweh.

“‘None[be] of you shall approach anyone who is his close relative[bf] to expose nakedness; I am Yahweh. You must not expose your father’s nakedness or[bg] your mother’s nakedness—she is your mother; you must not expose her nakedness. You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s wife—it is your father’s nakedness. As for your sister’s nakedness, whether your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born at home[bh] or born abroad,[bi] you must not expose their nakedness. 10 As for the nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, you must not expose their nakedness, because they are your nakedness. 11 As for the nakedness of the daughter of your father’s wife, she is your sister, a relative of your father; you must not expose her nakedness. 12 You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.[bj] 13 You must not expose the nakedness of your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s close relative.[bk] 14 You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s brother; you must not have sex with[bl] his wife—she is your aunt. 15 You must not expose your daughter-in-law’s nakedness; she is your son’s wife; you must not expose her nakedness. 16 You must not expose the nakedness of your brother’s wife; she is your brother’s nakedness. 17 You must not expose the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, or her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter; you must not take her as wife[bm] to expose her nakedness; they are close relatives[bn]—that is wickedness. 18 And you must not take as wife[bo] a woman with her sister, to be a rival-wife, to expose her nakedness before her during[bp] her life.

19 “‘And you must not have sex with[bq] a woman to expose her nakedness during[br] her menstrual uncleanness. 20 And you must not have sex[bs] with your fellow citizen’s[bt] wife, becoming unclean with her.

21 “‘And you shall not give any of[bu] your offspring[bv] in order to sacrifice them to Molech, nor[bw] shall you profane the name of your God; I am Yahweh. 22 And you shall not lie with a male as lying with[bx] a woman; that is a detestable thing. 23 And you shall not have sexual relations[by] with any animal, becoming unclean with it; and a woman shall not stand before[bz] an animal to copulate with it—that is a perversion.

24 “‘You must not make yourself unclean in any of these things, because the nations whom I am driving out from your presence were made unclean by all of these. 25 So[ca] the land became unclean, and I have brought the punishment of[cb] its guilt upon it, and the land has vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But[cc] you (neither the native nor[cd] the alien who is dwelling in your midst) shall keep my statutes and my regulations, and you shall not practice[ce] any of these detestable things 27 (because the people of the land, who were before you,[cf] did all these detestable things, so the land became unclean), 28 so that the land will not vomit you out when you make it unclean just as it vomited out the nation that was before you.[cg] 29 Indeed, anyone who does any of these detestable things, even[ch] those persons who do so shall be cut off from the midst of their people. 30 Thus[ci] you shall keep my obligation to not do any of the statutes regarding[cj] the detestable things that they did before you,[ck] so that you will not make yourselves unclean by them; I am Yahweh your God.’”

Mark 7:24-8:10

A Syrophoenician Woman’s Great Faith

24 And from there he set out and[a] went to the region of Tyre. And when he[b] entered into a house, he wanted no one to know, and yet he was not able to escape notice. 25 But immediately a woman whose young daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit, when she[c] heard about him, came and[d] fell down at his feet, 26 Now the woman was a Greek—a Syrophoenician by nationality—and she was asking him that he would expel the demon from her daughter. 27 And he said to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it[e] to the dogs!” 28 But she answered and said to him, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” 29 And he said to her, “Because of this statement, go! The demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And when she[f] went to her home, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone.

A Man Deaf and Unable to Speak Healed

31 And again he went away from the region of Tyre and[g] came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, and they were imploring him that he would place his[h] hand on him. 33 And he took him away from the crowd by himself and[i] put his fingers into his ears, and after[j] spitting, he touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”). 35 And[k] his ears were opened and his difficulty in speaking was removed[l] and he began to speak normally. 36 And he ordered them that they should say nothing, but as much as he ordered them not to, they proclaimed it[m] even more instead. 37 And they were amazed beyond all measure, saying, “He has done all things well! He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!”

The Feeding of Four Thousand

In those days there was[n] again a large crowd, and they did not have[o] anything they could eat. Summoning the disciples, he said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have remained with me three days already and do not have anything to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes they will give out on the way, and some of them have come from far away.” And his disciples answered him, “Where is anyone able to feed these people with bread here in the desert?” And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” So they said, “Seven.” And he commanded the crowd to recline for a meal on the ground, and taking the seven loaves, after he[p] had given thanks he broke them[q] and began giving[r] them[s] to his disciples so that they could set them[t] before them.[u] And they set them[v] before the crowd. And they had a few small fish, and after[w] giving thanks for them, he said to set these before them also. And they ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces that were left, seven baskets full. Now there were about four thousand. And he sent them away. 10 And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and[x] went to the district of Dalmanutha.

Psalm 41

Thanksgiving for God’s Provision in Time of Sickness

For the music director. A psalm of David.[a]

41 Blessed is the one who has regard for the poor;
in the day of disaster, Yahweh delivers him.
Yahweh protects him and keeps him alive;
he is blessed in the land,
and you do not give him
into the will[b] of his enemies.
Yahweh sustains him on his sick bed.
In his illness, you restore to health.[c]
As for me, I said, “O Yahweh, be gracious to me.
Heal me,[d] for I have sinned against you.”
My enemies speak evil about me,
“When will he die and his name perish?”
And when one comes to see me, he speaks falsely;
his heart gathers disaster for itself.
He goes out to the street; he speaks.
All who hate me speak together against me.
Against me they assume the worst[e] for me:
“A ruinous thing is poured out on him,
and now that he lies down, he will not rise up again.”
Even my close friend,[f] whom I trusted,
who ate my bread,
has lifted his heel against me.
10 But you, O Yahweh, be gracious to me and raise me up
that I may repay them.
11 By this I know that you delight in me:
because my enemy has not shouted in triumph over me.
12 As for me, you have upheld me in my integrity,
and you have set me in your presence forever.
13 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

Proverbs 10:15-16

15 The wealth of the rich is the city of his strength;
    the ruin of the poor is their poverty.
16 The wage of the righteous leads to life;
    the gain of the wicked to sin.
