Leviticus 24:1-25:46

The Sanctuary’s Lamp and Bread

24 Then[a] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the Israelites[b] that[c] they should bring pure olive oil from beaten olives for the light to present[d] a lamp continually. Aaron shall arrange for it outside[e] the curtain of the testimony in the tent of assembly from evening until morning before[f] Yahweh continually; it shall be a lasting statute[g] throughout your generations. On the pure golden[h] lampstand he shall arrange for the lamps before[i] Yahweh continually.

“And you shall take finely milled flour, and you shall bake with it twelve ring-shaped bread cakes: each one shall be two-tenths of an ephah. And you shall place them in two rows, six to the row, on the pure gold[j] table before[k] Yahweh. And you shall put pure frankincense on each[l] row so that[m] it shall be for the bread as a memorial offering, an offering made by fire for Yahweh. On every Sabbath[n] he shall arrange it in rows before[o] Yahweh continually; they are from the Israelites[p] as an everlasting[q] covenant. And it shall be for Aaron and for his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place, because it is a most holy thing[r] for him from Yahweh’s offerings made by fire—a lasting rule.”[s]

Punishment for Blasphemy

10 And an Israelite woman’s son, and he was an Egyptian man’s son, went out in the midst of the Israelites;[t] and the Israelite woman’s son and an[u] Israelite man fought in the camp. 11 Then[v] the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the name, and he cursed, so[w] they brought him to Moses—and the name of his mother was Shelomith the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 Then[x] they put him in custody so that[y] the matter might be made clear to them in accordance with the mouth of Yahweh.

13 Then[z] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 14 “Bring the curser outside the camp,[aa] and all the hearers shall place their hands on his head, and the whole community shall stone him. 15 And you shall speak to the Israelites,[ab] saying, ‘Any man[ac] when he curses his God shall bear[ad] his sin. 16 And he who blasphemes Yahweh’s name certainly shall be put to death; the whole community certainly shall stone him. As the alien, so the native shall be put to death at blaspheming his name.

17 “‘And when a man kills any human being, he certainly shall be put to death. 18 And he who kills[ae] a domestic animal must repay for it life in place of life. 19 And when a man causes[af] a physical defect in his fellow citizen according to[ag] what he has done, so it shall be done to him: 20 fracture in place of fracture, eye in place of eye, tooth in place of tooth—according to[ah] the physical defect he causes[ai] to the person, likewise it shall be caused[aj] to him. 21 And a killer of a domestic animal must repay for it, and a killer of a human shall be put to death. 22 You must have[ak] one norm; as for the alien, so[al] it must be for the native, because I am Yahweh your God.’”

23 Thus[am] Moses spoke to the Israelites,[an] and they brought the curser outside the camp,[ao] and they stoned him with stones, and the Israelites[ap] did just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

The Sabbath Year

25 Then[aq] Yahweh spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai,[ar] saying, “Speak to the Israelites,[as] and say to them, ‘When you[at] come into the land that I am about to give to you,[au] then[av] the land shall observe a Sabbath for Yahweh. Six years you[aw] shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and you shall gather its yield. But[ax] in the seventh year it shall be a Sabbath of complete rest[ay] for the land—a Sabbath for Yahweh; you[az] must not sow your field, and you must not prune your vineyard. You[ba] must not reap your harvest’s aftergrowth, and you must not harvest the grapes of your unpruned vines—it shall be a year of complete rest[bb] for the land. And a Sabbath of the land shall be for food for you:[bc] for you[bd] and for your slave and for your slave woman and for your hired worker and for your temporary residents[be] who are dwelling as aliens with you; and all its yield shall be for your[bf] domestic animal and for the wild animal, which are in your land to eat.

The Year of Jubilee

“‘And you[bg] shall count for yourself seven Sabbaths of years, seven times seven years, and they shall be for you time periods of[bh] years: forty-nine[bi] years. And you[bj] shall cause a loud horn blast[bk] to be heard on the seventh month on the tenth of the month; on the Day of Atonement you[bl] shall cause a ram’s horn to be heard in all your[bm] land. 10 And you[bn] shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and you shall proclaim a release in the land for all its inhabitants. It is a Jubilee; it shall be for you, and you shall return. You must return—everyone to his property and everyone to his clan.[bo] 11 You[bp] shall have the fiftieth year as a Jubilee;[bq] you must not reap its aftergrowth, and you must not harvest its unpruned vines. 12 Because it is a Jubilee, it shall be holy to you. You must eat its[br] produce from the field.

13 “‘In this Year of Jubilee each of you[bs] shall return[bt] to his property. 14 And when you[bu] sell something to your[bv] fellow citizen or you buy from your[bw] neighbor’s hand, you[bx] must not oppress one another.[by] 15 You[bz] must buy from your fellow citizen according to the number of years after the Jubilee; he must sell to you according to the number of years of yield. 16 You[ca] must increase its price according to a greater number of years,[cb] but[cc] you must decrease its price according to a lesser number of years,[cd] because he is selling its yields to you. 17 And you[ce] must not oppress one another,[cf] but[cg] you[ch] shall revere your God, because I am Yahweh, your[ci] God.

18 “‘And you[cj] shall do my statutes, and you must keep my regulations, and you shall do them, so that[ck] you shall live securely[cl] on the land. 19 And the land shall give its fruit, and you[cm] shall eat your fill,[cn] and you shall live securely[co] on it. 20 And if you[cp] should say, “What shall we eat in the seventh year, if[cq] we do not sow and we do not gather its yield?” 21 then[cr] I will command my blessing for you[cs] in the sixth year, so that[ct] it will make[cu] the yield for three years. 22 And you[cv] will sow in the eighth year, and you shall eat from the old yield;[cw] until the ninth year, until the coming of its yield, you shall eat the old yield.

23 “‘But[cx] the land must not be sold in[cy] perpetuity, because the land is mine, because you[cz] are aliens and temporary residents with me. 24 And in all your[da] property’s land you[db] must provide redemption for the land.

25 “‘When your[dc] brother becomes poor and he sells part of his property, then[dd] his nearest redeemer[de] shall come, and he shall redeem the thing sold by his brother. 26 But[df] if[dg] a man does not have[dh] a redeemer, then[di] he prospers[dj] and he finds enough for his redemption, 27 then[dk] he shall calculate the years of its selling, and he shall refund the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and he shall return to his property. 28 But[dl] if his hand does not find enough to refund to him, then[dm] what he has sold[dn] shall be in the buyer’s hand until the Year of Jubilee; and it shall go out of the buyer’s hand[do] in the Jubilee, and he shall return to his property.

29 “‘And if a man sells a residential house in a walled city,[dp] then[dq] it shall be his redemption until completing a year after his selling;[dr] its redemption shall last[ds] a year.[dt] 30 But[du] if it is not redeemed before a full year has passed,[dv] then[dw] the house that is in the walled city[dx] shall belong to the buyer in[dy] perpetuity throughout his generations; it shall not go out of the buyer’s hand[dz] in the Jubilee. 31 However,[ea] village houses that have no surrounding wall shall be considered open country;[eb] there is redemption for it, and in the Jubilee it shall go out of the buyer’s hand.[ec]

32 “‘As for[ed] the cities of the Levites, that is, the houses in[ee] their property’s cities, it shall be a lasting redemption[ef] for the Levites. 33 And whatever anyone redeems from the Levites then[eg] must go out of the buyer’s hand[eh] in the Jubilee, including a house’s selling in his city’s property,[ei] because the houses in[ej] the cities of the Levites are their property in the midst of the Israelites.[ek] 34 But[el] a[em] field of their cities’ pastureland must not be sold, because it is their property for all time.[en]

35 “‘And if your[eo] countryman[ep] becomes poor and if he becomes dependent on you,[eq] then[er] you shall support him like an alien and like a temporary resident, and he shall live with you. 36 You[es] must not take interest or[et] usury from him, but[eu] you shall revere your God, and your countryman[ev] shall live with you. 37 You[ew] must not give your money to him with interest or[ex] give your food for[ey] profit. 38 I am Yahweh your[ez] God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt to give you[fa] the land of Canaan, to be as God for you.

39 “‘And if your[fb] countryman[fc] who is with you becomes poor, and he is sold to you, you shall not treat him as a slave.[fd] 40 He shall be with you like a hired worker, like a temporary resident; he shall work with you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 And he and his sons with him shall go out from you, and he shall return to his clan, and to the property of his ancestors[fe] he shall return. 42 Because they are my servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt, they shall not be sold as a slave.[ff] 43 You[fg] shall not rule over him with ruthlessness, but[fh] you shall revere your God.

44 “‘As for[fi] your[fj] slave and your[fk] slave woman who are[fl] yours,[fm] from the nations that are all around you,[fn] from them you[fo] may buy a slave or[fp] a slave woman. 45 And you[fq] may buy also from the children[fr] of the temporary residents who are dwelling with you as aliens and from their clan who are with you, who have children in your land; indeed,[fs] they may be as property for you. 46 And you[ft] may pass them on as an inheritance to your[fu] sons[fv] after you[fw] to take possession of as property for all time[fx]—you[fy] may let them work. But[fz] as for your[ga] countrymen,[gb] the Israelites,[gc] you[gd] shall not rule with ruthlessness over one another.[ge]

Mark 10:13-31

Little Children Brought to Jesus

13 And they were bringing young children to him so that he could touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when[a] Jesus saw it,[b] he was indignant, and said to them, “Let the young children come to me. Do not forbid them, for to such belongs[c] the kingdom of God. 15 Truly I say to you, whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God like a young child will never enter into it.” 16 And after[d] taking them[e] into his arms, he blessed them, placing his[f] hands on them.

A Rich Young Man

17 And as[g] he was setting out on his way, one individual ran up and knelt down before him and[h] asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do so that I will inherit eternal life?” 18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”[i] 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all that you have, and give the proceeds[j] to the poor—and you will have treasure in heaven—and come, follow me.” 22 But he looked gloomy at the statement and[k] went away sorrowful, because he had[l] many possessions.

23 And Jesus looked around and[m] said to his disciples, “How difficult it is for[n] those who possess wealth to enter into the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were astounded at his words. But Jesus answered and[o] said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were very astounded, saying to one another, “And who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and[p] said, “With human beings it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields on account of me and on account of the gospel 30 who will not[q] receive a hundred times as much now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, together with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Psalm 44:9-26

Surely you have rejected and disgraced us,
and have not gone out with our armies.
10 You have caused us to pull back from the enemy,
and so those who hate us have plundered for themselves.
11 You have given us as sheep for food,
and among the nations you have scattered us.
12 You have sold your people cheaply,[a]
and did not profit by their price.
13 You have made us a taunt to our neighbors,
a derision and a scorn to those around us.
14 You have made us a byword among the nations,
a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15 All day long[b] my disgrace is before me,
and the shame of my face covers me,
16 because of the voice of the taunter and the reviler,
because of the enemy and the avenger.
17 All this has befallen us, though we have not forgotten you,
and we have not been false to your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned back,
and our steps have not turned aside from your way.
19 But you have crushed us in a place of jackals,
and have covered us with deep shadow.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God,
or had spread out our hands in prayer to a foreign god,
21 would not God discover this,
for he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 Rather, on account of you we are killed all day long;[c]
we are accounted as sheep for slaughter.
23 Wake up! Why do you sleep, O Lord?
Awake! Do not reject forever.
24 Why do you hide your face?
Have you forgotten our misery and our oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust.
Our body[d] clings to the ground.
26 Rise up! Be a help for us,
and redeem us for the sake of your loyal love.

Proverbs 10:20-21

20 Choice silver is a tongue of righteousness,
a heart[a] of wickedness is of little worth.[b]
21 Lips of righteousness feed many,
but fools die for lack of sense.[c]
