Summary of Travel
17 And when Pharaoh released the people, God did not lead them the way of the land of the Philistines, though it was nearer, because God said, “Lest the people change their mind when they see war and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the way of the desert to the Red Sea,[a] and the Israelites[b] went up in battle array from the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph[c] had made the Israelites[d] solemnly swear an oath, saying, “God will surely attend to you, and you will take up my bones from here with you.” 20 And they set out from Succoth, and they encamped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 And Yahweh was going before them by day in a column of cloud to lead them on the way and by night in a column of fire to give light to them to go by day and night. 22 The column of cloud by day and the column of fire by night did not depart from before the people.
Yahweh Rescues Israel at the Red Sea
14 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the Israelites[e] so that they turn and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea;[f] before Baal Zephon, which is opposite it, you will camp by the sea. 3 And Pharaoh will say of the Israelites,[g] ‘They are wandering around in the land. The desert has closed in on them.’ 4 And I will harden the heart of Pharaoh, and he will chase after them, and I will be glorified through Pharaoh and through all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh.” And they did so.
5 And it was told to the king of Egypt that the people fled, and the heart of Pharaoh was changed and that of his servants toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have released Israel from serving us!” 6 And he harnessed his chariot and took with him his people. 7 And he took six hundred select chariots and all the chariots of Egypt and officers over all of them. 8 And Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and he chased after the Israelites.[h] (Now the Israelites[i] were going out boldly.[j]) 9 And the Egyptians chased after them, and they overtook them encamped at the sea—all the horses of the chariots of Pharaoh and his charioteers and his army—at Pi-hahiroth before Baal Zephon.
10 And Pharaoh approached, and the Israelites[k] lifted their eyes, and there were the Egyptians traveling after them! And they were very afraid, and the Israelites[l] cried out to Yahweh. 11 And they said to Moses, “Because there are no graves in Egypt? Is that why you have taken us to die in the desert? What is this you have done to us by bringing us out from Egypt! 12 Isn’t this the word we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone so that we can serve Egypt!’ because serving Egypt is better for us than our dying in the desert.” 13 And Moses said to the people, “You must not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will accomplish for you today, because the Egyptians whom you see today you will see never again. 14 Yahweh will fight for you, and you must be quiet.”
15 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Speak to the Israelites[m] so that they set out.[n] 16 And you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it so that the Israelites[o] can go in the middle of the sea on the dry land. 17 And as for me, look, I am about to harden the heart of the Egyptians so that they come after them, and I will display my glory through Pharaoh and through all of his army, through his chariots and through his charioteers. 18 And the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh when I display my glory through Pharaoh, through his chariots, and through his charioteers.”
19 And the angel of God who was going before the camp of Israel set out and went behind them. And the column of cloud set out ahead of them, and it stood still behind them, 20 so that it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. And it was a dark cloud,[p] but it gave light to the night,[q] so that neither approached the other[r] all night.
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh moved the sea[s] with a strong east wind all night, and he made the sea become dry ground, and the waters were divided. 22 And the Israelites[t] entered the middle of the sea on the dry land. The waters were a wall for them on their right and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians gave chase[u] and entered after them—all the horses of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his charioteers—into the middle of the sea. 24 And during the morning watch, Yahweh looked down to the Egyptian camp from in the column of fire and cloud, and he threw the Egyptian camp into a panic. 25 And he removed[v] the wheels of their chariots so that they drove them with difficulty, and the Egyptians said, “We must flee away[w] from Israel because Yahweh is fighting for them against Egypt.”
26 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, and let the waters return over the Egyptians, over their chariots, and over their charioteers.” 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned at daybreak[x] to its normal level, and the Egyptians were fleeing because of it,[y] and Yahweh swept the Egyptians into the middle of the sea. 28 And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the charioteers—all the army of Pharaoh coming after them into the sea. Not even[z] one survived among them. 29 But the Israelites[aa] walked on the dry land in the middle of the sea. The waters were a wall for them on their right and on their left. 30 And Yahweh saved Israel on that day from the hand[ab] of Egypt, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the sea. 31 And Israel saw the great hand[ac] that Yahweh displayed against Egypt, and the people feared Yahweh, and they believed in Yahweh and in Moses his servant.
Song of Victory at the Sea
15 Then Moses and the Israelites[ad] sang this song to Yahweh, and they said,[ae]
“Let me sing to Yahweh because he is highly exalted;
the horse and its rider he hurled into the sea.
2 Yah[af] is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation;[ag]
this is my God, and I will praise him—the God of my father—and I will exalt him.
3 Yahweh is a man of war; Yahweh is his name.
4 The chariots of Pharaoh and his army he cast into the sea,
and his choice adjutants were sunk in the Red Sea.[ah]
5 The deep waters covered them;
they went down into the depths like a stone.
6 Yahweh, your right hand is glorious in power;
Yahweh, your right hand destroyed the enemy.
7 And in the greatness of your majesty you overthrew those standing up to you;
you released your fierce anger, and it consumed them like stubble.
8 And by the breath of your nostrils waters were piled up;
waves stood like a heap;
deep waters in the middle of the sea congealed.
9 The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide plunder,
my desire will be full of them, I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.’
10 You blew with your breath; the sea covered them;
they dropped like lead in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like you among the gods, Yahweh?
Who is like you—glorious in holiness, awesome in praiseworthy actions, doing wonders?[ai]
12 You stretched out your right hand;
the earth swallowed them.
13 In your loyal love you led the people whom you redeemed;
in your strength you guided them to the abode of your holiness.[aj]
14 Peoples heard; they trembled;
anguish seized the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab;
all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.
16 Terror and dread fell on them;
at the greatness of your arm they became silent like the stone,
until your people passed by, Yahweh,
until the people whom you bought passed by.
17 You brought them and planted them on the mountain of your inheritance,
a place you made for yourself to inhabit, Yahweh,
a sanctuary, Lord, that your hands established.
18 Yahweh will reign as king forever and ever.”
Jesus’ Authority Challenged
23 And after[a] he arrived at the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him while he[b] was teaching, saying, “By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?” 24 And Jesus answered and[c] said to them, “I also will ask you one question. If you tell the answer[d] to me, I also will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 From where was the baptism of John—from heaven or from men?” And they began to discuss[e] this[f] among themselves, saying, “If we say ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the crowd, because they all look upon John as a prophet.” 27 And they answered and[g] said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “Now what do you think? A man had two sons. He approached[h] the first and[i] said, ‘Son, go work in the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered and[j] said, ‘I do not want to!’ But later he changed his mind and[k] went. 30 And he approached the second[l] and[m] said the same thing. So he answered and[n] said, ‘I will, sir,’ and he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his[o] father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God! 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe him. And when[p] you saw it,[q] you did not even change your minds later so as to believe in him.
The Parable of the Tenant Farmers in the Vineyard
33 “Listen to another parable: There was a man—a master of a house—who planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey. 34 And when the season of fruit drew near, he sent his slaves to the tenant farmers to collect his fruit. 35 And the tenant farmers seized his slaves, one of whom they beat, and one of whom they killed, and one of whom they stoned. 36 Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first ones, and they did the same thing to them. 37 So finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when[r] the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance!’ 39 And they seized him and[s] threw him[t] out of the vineyard and killed him.[u] 40 Now when the master of the vineyard arrives, what will he do to those tenant farmers?” 41 They said to him, “He will destroy those evil men completely and lease the vineyard to other tenant farmers who will give him the fruits in their season.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures,
‘The stone which the builders rejected,
this has become the cornerstone.[v]
This came about from the Lord,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?[w]
43 For this reason, I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and will be given to a people[x] who produce its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls—it will crush him!” 45 And when[y] the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them, 46 and although they[z] wanted to arrest him, they were afraid of the crowds, because they looked upon him as a prophet.
A Prayer for Vindication
Of David.[a]
26 Judge me, O Yahweh, because I have walked in my integrity,
and I have trusted Yahweh and not wavered.
2 Prove me, O Yahweh, and test me.
Try my innermost being[b] and my mind.[c]
3 Because your loyal love is before my eyes,
and I walk about in your faithfulness.
4 I do not sit with deceitful people,
nor will I go about with hypocrites.
5 I hate the crowd of evildoers,
and with the wicked I will not sit.
6 I will wash my hands in innocence,
and I will walk about your altar, O Yahweh,
7 to declare with a voice of thanksgiving,
and tell of all your wondrous deeds.
8 O Yahweh, I love the dwelling of your house,[d]
and the place where your glory abides.[e]
9 Do not destroy me[f] with the sinners,
nor my life with men of bloodshed,
10 in whose hands is an evil plan,
and whose right hand is full of bribes.[g]
11 But as for me, I will walk in my integrity.
Redeem me and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on level ground.
In assemblies I will bless Yahweh.
What Yahweh Hates
16 There are six things Yahweh hates,
and seven things are abominations of his soul:[a]
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a devising heart, plans of deception,
feet that hurry to run to evil,[b]
19 a false witness who breathes lies
and sends out discord[c] between brothers.
