Lexham English Bible (LEB)
Version
Leviticus 9:7-10:20

Then[a] Moses said to Aaron, “Approach[b] the altar and sacrifice[c] your sin offering and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself and for the people. And sacrifice[d] the people’s offering and make atonement for them, just as Yahweh has commanded.”

Then[e] Aaron approached[f] the altar, and he slaughtered the bull calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. Then[g] Aaron’s sons presented the blood to him, and he dipped his finger in the blood, and he put it on the altar’s horns, and he poured out the blood on the altar’s base. 10 And the fat and the kidneys and the lobe from the sin offering’s liver[h] he turned into smoke on the altar, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, 11 but[i] the meat and the skin he burned with fire[j] outside the camp.[k]

12 Then[l] he slaughtered the burnt offering, and Aaron’s sons brought the blood to him, and he sprinkled it on the altar all around; 13 and they brought the burnt offering to him by its pieces, as well as[m] the head, and he turned them into smoke on the altar; 14 and he washed the inner parts[n] and the lower leg bones, then[o] he turned them into smoke upon the burnt offering on the altar.

15 Then[p] he presented the people’s offering, and he took the goat of the sin offering, which was for the people, and he slaughtered it and offered[q] it as a sin offering like the first one. 16 Then[r] he presented the burnt offering, and he sacrificed[s] it according to the regulation. 17 Then[t] he presented the grain offering, and he filled his palm with some of[u] it, and he turned it into smoke on the altar besides the morning’s burnt offering. 18 Then[v] he slaughtered the ox and the ram, the fellowship offerings that are for the people, and Aaron’s sons brought the blood to him, and he sprinkled it on the altar all around. 19 And as for the fat portions from the ox and from the ram (the fat tail and the layer of fat and the kidneys and the lobe of the liver), 20 they placed the fat portions on the breast sections, and he turned the fat portions into smoke on the altar. 21 Then[w] Aaron waved the breast sections and the right upper thigh as a wave offering before[x] Yahweh, just as Moses had commanded.

22 Then[y] Aaron lifted his hand toward[z] the people, and he blessed them, and he came down after[aa] sacrificing[ab] the sin offering and the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings. 23 Then[ac] Moses and Aaron entered the tent of assembly. When[ad] they came out, they blessed[ae] the people, and Yahweh’s glory appeared to all the people. 24 Then[af] a fire went out from before[ag] Yahweh, and it consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And all the people saw it, so[ah] they shouted for joy, and they fell on their faces.

The Deaths of Nadab and Abihu

10 And Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, and they put fire in them and placed incense on it;[ai] then[aj] they presented before[ak] Yahweh illegitimate fire, which he had not commanded them. So[al] fire went out from before[am] Yahweh, and it consumed them so that[an] they died before[ao] Yahweh. Therefore[ap] Moses said to Aaron, “This is what Yahweh spoke, saying, ‘Among those who are close to me I will show myself holy, and in the presence of[aq] all the people I will display my glory.’”[ar] So[as] Aaron was silent.

Then[at] Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan the sons of Uzziel, Aaron’s uncle, and he said to them, “Come forward.[au] Carry your brothers from the front of[av] the sanctuary to outside the camp.”[aw] So[ax] they came forward,[ay] and they carried them outside the camp[az] in their tunics, just as Moses had ordered.

Then[ba] Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “You must not let your hair hang loosely, and you must not tear your garments, so that[bb] you will not die and he[bc] will be angry with all the community. But[bd] your brothers, all the house of Israel, may weep because of the burning that Yahweh caused,[be] but[bf] you must not go out from the entrance to[bg] the tent of assembly lest you die, because Yahweh’s anointing oil is on you.” So[bh] they did according to Moses’ word.

Lasting Statutes

Then[bi] Yahweh spoke to Aaron, saying, “You and your sons with you may not drink wine or[bj] strong drink when you come to the tent of assembly, so that[bk] you will not die—it is a lasting statute for your[bl] generations— 10 and to distinguish between the holy and the unholy,[bm] as well as[bn] between the unclean and the clean, 11 and to teach the Israelites[bo] all the rules that Yahweh has spoken to them through[bp] Moses.”

12 Then[bq] Moses spoke to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “As for the remaining parts,[br] take the remainder of the grain offering from Yahweh’s offerings made by fire and eat it, the unleavened bread, beside the altar, because it is a most holy thing.[bs] 13 And you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your allotted portion and the allotted portion of your sons from Yahweh’s offerings made by fire, for so I have been commanded. 14 And the wave offering’s breast section and the upper thigh of the contribution offering you[bt] must eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you, because they are given as your allotted portion and your sons’ allotted portion from the sacrifices of the Israelites[bu] fellowship offerings. 15 They must bring the thigh of the contribution offering and the breast section of the wave offering in addition to the offerings made by fire, consisting of the fat portions, to wave as a wave offering before[bv] Yahweh; and it will be for you and for your sons with you as a lasting rule, just as Yahweh had commanded.”

The Problem of the Uneaten Sin Offering

16 Then[bw] Moses sought all over for the goat of the sin offering and behold, it was burned up. So[bx] he was angry with Aaron’s remaining sons Eleazar and Ithamar, saying, 17 “Why did you not eat the sin offering on the sanctuary’s site, because it is a most holy thing?[by] And he gave it to you to remove the community’s guilt, to make atonement for them before[bz] Yahweh. 18 Look, its blood was not brought inside the sanctuary.[ca] Certainly you should have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.”

19 So[cb] Aaron said to Moses, “Look, today they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before[cc] Yahweh, and things such as these have happened to me, and if I were to eat a sin offering today, would it have been good in Yahweh’s eyes?” 20 When[cd] Moses heard, it[ce] was good in his eyes.

Mark 4:26-5:20

The Parable of the Seed that Grows by Itself

26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is like this: like a man scatters seed on the ground. 27 And he sleeps and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—he does not know how.[a] 28 By itself the soil produces a crop: first the grass, then the head of grain, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the crop permits, he sends in the sickle right away, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or by what parable can we present it? 31 It is like a mustard seed that when sown on the ground, although it[b] is the smallest of all the seeds that are on the ground, 32 but when it is sown it grows up and becomes the largest of all the garden herbs, and sends out large branches so that the birds of the sky are able to nest in its shade.” 33 And with many parables such as these he was speaking the word to them, as they were able to hear it.[c] 34 And he did not speak to them without a parable, but in private he explained everything to his own disciples.

Calming of a Storm

35 And on that day, when it[d] was evening, he said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him along, as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great storm of wind developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already being filled with water.[e] 38 And he was in the stern sleeping on the cushion, and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, is it not a concern to you that we are perishing?” 39 And he woke up and[f] rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Be quiet! Be silent!” And the wind abated and there was a great calm. 40 And he said to them, “Why are you fearful? Do you not yet have faith?” 41 And they were terribly frightened[g] and began to say[h] to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

A Demon-possessed Gerasene Healed

And they came to the other side of the sea,[i] to the region of the Gerasenes.[j] And as[k] he was getting out of the boat, immediately from the tombs a man with an unclean spirit went to meet him, who lived[l] among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him any longer, not even with a chain, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles had been shattered. And no one was strong enough to subdue him. And during every night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. And when he[m] saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him. And crying out with a loud voice he said, “What have I to do with you[n], Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you by God, do not torment me!” (For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”) And he was asking him “What is your name?”[o] And he said to him, “My name is Legion, because we are many.” 10 And he was imploring him many times that he would not send them out of the region. 11 Now a large herd of pigs was there at the hill feeding, 12 and they implored him, saying, “Send us to the pigs so that we may enter into them.” 13 And he permitted them. And the unclean spirits came out and[p] entered into the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand—rushed headlong down the steep slope into the sea and were drowned in the sea. 14 And their herdsmen fled and reported it[q] in the town and in the countryside, and they came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there clothed and in his right mind—the one who had had the legion—and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it[r] described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs. 17 And they began to urge him to depart from their region. 18 And as[s] he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed began to implore[t] him that he could go with him. 19 And he did not permit him, but said to him, “Go to your home to your people and tell them all that the Lord has done for you, and that he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him, and they were all astonished.

Psalm 37:30-40

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart.
His steps will not slip.
32 The wicked watches for the righteous
and seeks to kill him.
33 Yahweh will not abandon him into his hand,
and he will not let him be condemned when he is judged.
34 Wait for Yahweh and keep his way,
and he will exalt you to possess the land.
When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
35 I have seen the wicked acting violently
and spreading himself out
like a luxuriant native tree.
36 Then he passed on[a] and behold, he was not.
And I sought him, but he could not be found.
37 Observe the blameless and look at the upright,
for there is a future for a man of peace.
38 But transgressors shall be destroyed altogether.
The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
39 And[b] the salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh,
their refuge in the time of trouble.
40 And Yahweh helps them and he rescues them.
He rescues them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

Proverbs 10:6-7

Blessings belong to the head of the righteous,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
The memory of righteousness is like a blessing,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
