Lexham English Bible (LEB)
Version
Deuteronomy 9-10

“Hear, Israel, you are about to cross the Jordan today to go to dispossess nations larger and more numerous than you, great cities fortified with high walls,[a] a great and tall people, the sons of the Anakites, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who could stand before the sons of Anak?’ You should know today[b] that Yahweh your God is the one crossing ahead of you[c] as a devouring fire; he will destroy them, and he will subdue them before you; so you will dispossess them, and you will destroy them quickly, just as[d] Yahweh promised[e] you.

“You shall not say to yourself[f] when Yahweh your God is driving them out[g] before you,[h] saying,[i] ‘Because of my righteousness Yahweh brought me to take possession of this land’; but because of the wickedness of these nations Yahweh is driving them out before you.[j] It is not because of your righteousness and because of the uprightness of your heart that you are coming to take possession of their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God is driving them before you,[k] and in order to confirm the promise[l] that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,[m] to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

“So you should understand that it is not because of your righteousness that Yahweh your God is giving you this good land to take possession of it, because you are a stubborn people. [n] Remember, do not forget,[o] that you provoked Yahweh your God in the desert, and from the day that you went out from the land of Egypt until you came to this place[p] you were rebelling against Yahweh.

“And remember at Horeb you provoked Yahweh, and Yahweh became angry enough to destroy you. When I went up the mountain[q] to receive the stone tablets,[r] the tablets of the covenant that Yahweh made[s] with you, and remained on the mountain forty days[t] and forty nights,[u] I did not eat food and I did not drink water. 10 And Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them was writing according to all the words that Yahweh spoke with you at the mountain, from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 And then[v] at the end of forty days[w] and forty nights,[x] Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 And Yahweh said to me, ‘Come now, go down quickly from this mountain because your people behave corruptly whom you brought out from Egypt, for they turned quickly from the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made for themselves a cast image.’ 13 And Yahweh spoke to me, saying,[y] ‘I have seen this people, and look! They are a stubborn people.[z] 14 Leave me alone, and let me destroy them, and let me blot out their name from under heaven, and let me make you into a nation mightier and more numerous than they!’

15 “And I turned, and I went down the mountain, as the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I looked,[aa] and indeed you had sinned against Yahweh your God; you had made for yourselves an image of a calf of cast metal; [ab] you had turned quickly from the way that Yahweh had commanded for you. 17 And I took hold of the two tablets, and I threw them out of[ac] my two hands and smashed them before your eyes. 18 And then I lay prostrate before[ad] Yahweh, as earlier, forty days[ae] and forty nights;[af] I did not eat food and I did not drink water because of all your sins that you committed, by doing evil in the eyes of Yahweh and so provoking him. 19 For I was in dread[ag] from being in the presence of the anger and the wrath with which Yahweh was angry with you so as to destroy you, but Yahweh listened to me also at that time.[ah] 20 And with Aaron Yahweh was angry enough[ai] to destroy him, and I prayed also for Aaron at that time. 21 And your sinful thing that you had made, the molten calf, I took and I burned it with fire, and I crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was crushed to dust, and I threw its dust into the stream that flowed down the mountain.[aj]

22 “And also at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked Yahweh to anger. 23 And when Yahweh sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, saying,[ak] ‘Go up and take possession of the land that I have given you,’ you rebelled against the command of Yahweh your God, and you did not believe him, and you did not listen to his voice. 24 You have been rebellious toward Yahweh from the day I have known you.[al]

25 “And I lay prostrate before Yahweh through forty days,[am] and through forty nights[an] I prostrated myself, because Yahweh intended to kill you. 26 And I prayed to Yahweh, and I said, ‘Lord Yahweh, you must not destroy your people and your inheritance whom you redeemed in your greatness,[ao] whom you brought out from Egypt with a strong hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; you must not pay attention to[ap] the stubbornness of this people, to their wickedness and to their sin, 28 lest the people of the land from which you brought us out from there say, “Because Yahweh was not able to bring them to the land that he promised[aq] to them and because of his hatred toward them, he has brought them out to kill them in the desert.” 29 For they are your people and your inheritance whom you brought with your great power and with your outstretched arm.’

10 “At that time Yahweh said to me, ‘Carve for yourself two tablets of stone just as the former ones, and come up the mountain to me, and you shall make for yourself an ark of wood. And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets, which you smashed, and you must put them in the ark.’ And so I made an ark of acacia wood,[ar] and I carved two tablets of stone like the former ones, and I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. And he wrote upon the tablets according to the first writing,[as] the ten words that Yahweh spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly, and Yahweh gave them to me. And I turned, and I came down from the mountain, and I put the tablets in the ark that I had made, and they are there, just as Yahweh commanded me.

“And the Israelites[at] journeyed from the wells of Bene-Yaqan to Moserah; there Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar, his son, served as a priest in place of him. From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land flowing with streams of water. At that time Yahweh set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to stand before[au] Yahweh, to serve him and to bless the people in his name until this day. Therefore there was not[av] for Levi an allotment or an inheritance along with his brothers; rather Yahweh is his inheritance just as Yahweh your God promised[aw] to him.

10 And I stayed on the mountain just as during the former forty days[ax] and forty nights,[ay] and Yahweh listened to me also on that occasion;[az] Yahweh was not willing to destroy you. 11 And Yahweh said to me, ‘Come, continue[ba] your journey before the people, [bb] so that you may go and take possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors[bc] to give to them.’

12 And now, Israel, what is Yahweh your God asking[bd] from you, except[be] to revere Yahweh your God, to go[bf] in all his ways and to love him and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul,[bg] 13 to keep the commandments of Yahweh and his statutes that I am commanding you today for your own good.[bh] 14 Look! For to Yahweh your God belong[bi] heaven and the highest heavens,[bj] the earth and all that is in it. 15 Yet[bk] to your ancestors[bl] Yahweh was very attached, so as to love them, and so he chose their offspring after them, namely you, from all the peoples, as it is today.[bm] 16 So you shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and do not be stubborn.[bn] 17 For Yahweh your God, he is God of the gods and Lord of the lords, the great and mighty God, the awesome one who is not partial,[bo] and he does not take bribes. 18 And he executes justice for the orphan and widow, and he is one who loves the alien, to give to them food and clothing. 19 And you shall love the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 20 Yahweh your God, you shall revere him, you shall serve him, and to him you shall cling, and by his name you shall swear. 21 He is your praise, and he is your God, who has done with you these great and awesome things that your eyes have seen. 22 With only seventy persons your ancestors[bp] went down to Egypt, but now Yahweh your God has made you as the stars of the heaven with respect to multitude.[bq]

Luke 8:4-21

The Parable of the Sower

And while[a] a large crowd was gathering and they were going to him from town after town, he spoke by means of a parable: “The sower went out to sow his seed, and while he was sowing, some seed[b] fell on the side of the path and was trampled under foot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. And other seed fell on the rock, and when it[c] came up, it withered, because it did not have moisture. And other seed fell in the midst of the thorn plants, and the thorn plants grew up with it[d] and[e] choked it. And other seed fell on the good soil, and when it[f] came up, it produced a hundred times as much grain.” As he[g] said these things, he called out, “The one who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Reason for the Parables

And his disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 And he said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are in parables, so that

‘Seeing they may not see,
and hearing they may not understand.’[h]

The Parable of the Sower Interpreted

11 Now the parable means this: the seed is the word of God, 12 and those beside the path are the ones who have heard. Then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and[i] be saved. 13 And those on the rock are those who receive the word with joy when they hear it,[j] and these do not have enough root, who believe for a time and in a time of testing fall away. 14 And the seed that fell into the thorn plants—these are the ones who hear and as they[k] go along are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not bear fruit to maturity. 15 But the seed on the good soil—these are the ones who, after[l] hearing the word, hold fast to it[m] with a noble and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.

The Parable of the Lamp

16 “And no one, after[n] lighting a lamp, covers it with a jar or puts it[o] under a bed, but puts it[p] on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For nothing is secret that will not become evident, and nothing hidden that will never be known and come to light. 18 Therefore consider how you listen, for whoever has, to him more will be given, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away from him.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

19 Now his mother and brothers came to him, and they were not able to meet with him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside wanting to see you.” 21 But he answered and[q] said to them, “These are my mother and my brothers—the ones who hear the word of God and do it.[r]

Psalm 69:19-36

19 You know my reproach, my shame and my disgrace.
Fully known[a] to you are all my adversaries.
20 Reproach has broken my heart and I am sick.
And I hoped for sympathy, but there was none,
and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They also gave me gall for food,[b]
and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
22 Let their table before them be a trap,
and their times of peace a snare.
23 Let their eyes be dark so they cannot see,
and make their loins continually tremble.
24 Pour out your indignation on them,
and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 Let their camp be desolate.
Let none dwell in their tents,
26 because they persecute those whom you, yourself, have struck,
and they tell of the pain of those you have wounded.
27 Add guilt on top of their guilt,[c]
and do not let them be acquitted.[d]
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living,
and let them not be recorded with the righteous.
29 But as for me, though I am afflicted and pained,
your salvation will protect[e] me, O God.
30 I will praise the name of God in song,
and magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 For Yahweh it will be better than an ox or bull,
horned and hoofed.[f]
32 The afflicted will see and rejoice.
O God seekers, let your heart revive,[g]
33 because Yahweh hears the needy
and does not despise his own who are prisoners.
34 Let heavens and earth praise him,
the seas and all that moves in them,
35 because God will save Zion
and build the cities of Judah,
that they may dwell there and possess it.
36 And the offspring of his servants will inherit it,
and those who love his name will abide in it.

Proverbs 12:2-3

The good obtains favor from Yahweh,
but anyone who schemes, he condemns.
A person will not be established by wickedness,
but the root of the righteous will not be moved.
