Version
Leviticus 25:47-27:13

47 “‘And if the alien or[a] the temporary resident who are with you[b] prosper,[c] but[d] your countryman[e] who is with him becomes poor and he is sold to an alien, a temporary resident who is with you, or to a descendant of an alien’s clan, 48 after he is sold redemption shall be for him; one of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his uncle’s son may redeem him, or one of[f] his close relatives[g] from his clan may redeem him; or if he prospers,[h] he may redeem himself. 50 And he shall calculate with his buyer from the year of his selling himself[i] until the Jubilee; and the value of his selling shall be according to the number of years—it shall be with him like[j] a hired worker’s days. 51 If there are still many years, in keeping with them[k] he shall restore his redemption in proportion to his purchase price.[l] 52 And if there are a few years left until the Year of Jubilee, then[m] he shall calculate for himself; he shall restore his redemption according to the number of his years.[n] 53 He shall be with him as a yearly hired worker;[o] he shall not rule over him with ruthlessness in your[p] sight.[q] 54 And if he is not redeemed by[r] any of these ways,[s] then[t] he and his sons with him shall go out in the Year of Jubilee. 55 Indeed,[u] the Israelites[v] are servants for me; they are my servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your[w] God.’”

Blessings for Obedience

26 “‘You[x] shall not make for yourselves idols and divine images, and you shall not raise up stone pillars for yourselves, and you shall not put a sculptured stone in your land in order to[y] worship before it, because I am Yahweh your God.

“‘You shall keep my Sabbaths, and you shall revere my sanctuary; I am Yahweh.

“‘If you walk in my statutes and you keep my commands and you do them, then[z] I will give you rains in their time, and the land shall give its produce, and the trees of the field shall give their fruit. And for you the threshing season shall overtake the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall overtake the sowing, and you shall eat your food to your fill[aa] and you shall live securely[ab] in your land. And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and there shall not be anybody who makes you afraid,[ac] and I will remove harmful animals from the land, and no sword shall pass through your land.[ad] And you shall pursue your enemies, and they shall fall by the sword before you.[ae] And five of[af] you shall pursue a hundred, and a hundred of[ag] you shall pursue a myriad;[ah] and your enemies shall fall by the sword before you.[ai] And I will turn to you, and I will make you fruitful, and I will make you numerous; and I will keep my covenant with you. 10 And you shall eat old grain,[aj] and you shall clear away the old before the new.[ak] 11 And I will put my dwelling place in your midst, and my inner self[al] shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk about in your midst, and I shall be your God,[am] and you shall be my people.[an] 13 I am Yahweh, your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from being their slaves; and I broke the bars of your yoke, and I caused you to walk erectly.

Punishment for Disobedience

14 “‘But[ao] if you do not listen to me and you do not carry out[ap] all these commands, 15 and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self[aq] abhors my regulations, to not carry out[ar] all my commands by your breaking my covenant, 16 I in turn[as] will do this to you: then[at] I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed in vain,[au] and your enemies shall eat it. 17 And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated before[av] your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but[aw] there shall not be anybody who is pursuing[ax] you.

18 “‘And if in spite of these things you do not listen to me, then[ay] I will continue to discipline you seven times for your sins. 19 And I will break the pride of your strength; and I will make your heaven like iron[az] and your land like copper. 20 And your strength shall be consumed in vain;[ba] and your land shall not give its produce, and the land’s trees shall not give their fruit.

21 “‘And if you go against me in hostility and you are not willing to listen to me, then[bb] I will add a plague onto you seven times according to your sins. 22 And I will send wild animals[bc] out among you, and they shall make you childless, and they shall cut down your domestic animals, and they shall make you fewer; and your roads shall be desolate.

23 “‘And if you do not accept correction from[bd] me through these things, but[be] you go against me in hostility, 24 then[bf] I myself[bg] will also go against you in hostility, and I myself[bh] also will strike you seven times for your sins. 25 And I will bring upon you a sword that seeks vengeance for the covenant, and you shall be gathered to your cities; and I will send a plague in your midst, and you shall be given into the hand of an enemy. 26 At my breaking the supply[bi] of bread[bj] for you, then[bk] ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied.

27 “‘And if through this you do not listen to me and you go against me in hostility, 28 then[bl] I will go against you in hostile anger, and also[bm] I myself[bn] will discipline you seven times for your sins. 29 And you shall eat the flesh of your sons; and the flesh of your daughters you shall eat. 30 And I will destroy your high places, and I will cut down your incense altars, and I will place your corpses on your idols’ corpses; and my inner self[bo] shall abhor you. 31 And I will lay your cities in ruins, and I will lay waste your sanctuaries; and I shall not smell your sacrifices’[bp] appeasing fragrance. 32 And I myself[bq] will lay waste the land, and your enemies who are living in it shall be appalled over it. 33 And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw a sword behind you; and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a ruin. 34 Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths all the days of its lying desolate, and you shall be in the land of your enemies; then the land shall rest, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths. 35 All the days of its lying desolate it shall rest for the time[br] that it had not rested during your Sabbaths while you were living on it. 36 As for[bs] the ones who remain among you, I will bring[bt] fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight before[bu] a sword, and they shall fall, but[bv] there shall not be a pursuer. 37 And they shall stumble over one another[bw] as from before[bx] a sword, but[by] there shall not be a pursuer; and you shall have no resistance[bz] before[ca] your enemies. 38 And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you. 39 And because of their guilt, the ones among you who remain shall decay in the land of their enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their ancestors,[cb] they shall decay with them.

40 “‘But[cc] when they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors[cd] in their infidelity that they displayed against me, and moreover that they went against me in hostility— 41 I myself[ce] also[cf] went against them in hostility, and I brought them into the land of their enemies—or if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and then they pay for their guilt, 42 I will remember[cg] my covenant with Jacob; and I will remember also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 43 And the land shall be deserted by them, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths in its being desolate from them, and they themselves[ch] must pay for their guilt, simply because[ci] they rejected my regulations, and their inner self[cj] abhorred my statutes. 44 And in spite of[ck] this, when they are[cl] in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am Yahweh their God. 45 And I will remember the first covenant for them[cm]—whom I brought out from the land of Egypt in the sight of[cn] the nations to be their God.[co] I am Yahweh.’”

46 These are the rules and the regulations and the laws that Yahweh gave between himself and the Israelites[cp] on Mount Sinai[cq] through[cr] Moses.

Instructions About Vows

27 Then[cs] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the Israelites,[ct] and say[cu] to them, ‘When a man makes a vow according to your[cv] proper value of persons to Yahweh, if[cw] your proper value is for a male[cx] from twenty years of age[cy] up to[cz] sixty years of age,[da] then[db] your proper value shall be fifty shekels of money according to the sanctuary’s shekel. But[dc] if it is for a female, then[dd] your proper value shall be thirty shekels. And if from five years of age[de] up to[df] twenty years of age,[dg] then[dh] your proper value shall be twenty shekels for the male and ten shekels for the female. And if from a month of age[di] up to[dj] five years of age,[dk] then[dl] your proper value shall be five shekels of money for the male, and your proper value for the female shall be three shekels of money. And if from sixty years of age[dm] and above: if a male, then[dn] your proper value shall be fifteen shekels; and for the female, ten shekels. But[do] if he is poorer than your proper value, then[dp] he shall present himself before[dq] the priest, and the priest shall set a value on him; the priest shall value him according to[dr] what the person who made a vow can afford.[ds]

“‘And if it is a domestic animal from which they present an offering for Yahweh, all that he gives from it for Yahweh shall be a holy object. 10 He shall not replace it, nor shall he exchange it, either good with bad or bad with good; and if he indeed exchanges a domestic animal with a domestic animal, then[dt] it and its substitution shall be a holy object.[du] 11 But[dv] if it is any unclean animal from which they may not present an offering for Yahweh, then[dw] he shall present the animal before[dx] the priest. 12 And the priest shall set a value on it, either good or bad;[dy] as the priest sets your proper value, so it shall be. 13 And if he indeed wants to redeem it, then[dz] he shall add a fifth of it onto your proper value.

Mark 10:32-52

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection a Third Time

32 Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on ahead of them. And they were astounded, but those who were following him[a] were afraid. And taking aside the twelve again, he began to tell them the things that were about to happen to him: 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him and flog him and kill him,[b] and after three days he will rise.”

A Request by James and John

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and[c] said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want that I do[d] for you?” 37 So they said to him, “Grant to us that we may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when they[e] heard this,[f] the ten began to be indignant about James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to himself and[g] said to them, “You know that those who are considered to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their people in high positions exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be the slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

A Blind Man Healed at Jericho

46 And they came to Jericho. And as[h] he was setting out from Jericho along with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road. 47 And when he[i] heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many people warned him that he should be quiet. But he was crying out even more loudly,[j] “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and[k] said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man and[l] said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 And he threw off his cloak, jumped up, and[m] came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered him and[n] said, “What do you want me to do[o] for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabboni,[p] that I may regain my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” And immediately he regained his sight and began to follow[q] him on the road.

Psalm 45

Celebration of a Royal Wedding

For the music director; according to The Lilies. Of the sons of Korah.

A maskil. A song of love.[a]

45 My heart is moved with a good word;
I recite my compositions[b] to the king.
My tongue is the pen of a skilled scribe.
You are the most handsome of the sons of humankind;
grace is poured out on your lips;
therefore God has blessed you forever.
Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one,
in your splendor and your majesty.
And in your majesty ride victoriously,[c]
because of truth and humility and righteousness.
And let your right hand teach you awesome deeds.
Your arrows are sharp;
peoples fall under you
in the midst of the king’s enemies.
Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
A scepter of uprightness is
the scepter of your kingdom.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness.
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you
from among your companions with festive oil.
All your robes are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia.
From palaces of ivory stringed instruments gladden you.
Kings’ daughters are among your noble ladies.
The queen stands at your right hand in gold of Ophir.
10 Hear, O daughter, and discern[d] and incline your ear,
and forget your people and your father’s house.
11 Let the king desire your beauty.[e]
Because he is your lord, therefore[f] bow down to him.
12 Even the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift.
The rich from among people will seek your favor.[g]
13 The king’s daughter is all glorious within;[h]
her garment is of gold embroidered cloth.
14 She is brought to the king in colorful garments.
The young women behind her, her attendants,
are being brought to you.
15 They are led with joy and gladness.
They enter the palace of the king.
16 In place of your[i] fathers will be your sons.
You will make them princes in all the land.[j]
17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore peoples will praise you forever and ever.

Proverbs 10:22

22 The blessing of Yahweh makes one rich,
    and he does not increase sorrow with it.
