Psalm 5

Psalm 5[a]

For the music director, to be accompanied by wind instruments;[b] a psalm of David.

Listen to what I say,[c] Lord!
Carefully consider my complaint![d]
Pay attention to my cry for help,
my King and my God,
for I am praying to you!
Lord, in the morning[e] you will hear[f] me;[g]
in the morning I will present my case to you[h] and then wait expectantly for an answer.[i]
Certainly[j] you are not a God who approves of evil;[k]
evil people[l] cannot dwell with you.[m]
Arrogant people cannot stand in your presence;[n]
you hate[o] all who behave wickedly.[p]
You destroy[q] liars;[r]
the Lord despises[s] violent and deceitful people.[t]
But as for me,[u] because of your great faithfulness I will enter your house;[v]
I will bow down toward your holy temple as I worship you.[w]
Lord, lead me in your righteousness[x]
because of those who wait to ambush me,[y]
remove the obstacles in the way in which you are guiding me.[z]
For[aa] they do not speak the truth;[ab]
their stomachs are like the place of destruction,[ac]
their throats like an open grave,[ad]
their tongues like a steep slope leading into it.[ae]
10 Condemn them,[af] O God!
May their own schemes be their downfall.[ag]
Drive them away[ah] because of their many acts of insurrection,[ai]
for they have rebelled against you.
11 But may all who take shelter[aj] in you be happy.[ak]
May they continually[al] shout for joy.[am]
Shelter them[an] so that those who are loyal to you[ao] may rejoice.[ap]
12 Certainly[aq] you reward[ar] the godly,[as] Lord.
Like a shield you protect[at] them[au] in your good favor.[av]

Psalm 38

Psalm 38[a]

A psalm of David, written to get God’s attention.[b]

38 O Lord, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger.
Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury.[c]
For your arrows pierce[d] me,
and your hand presses me down.[e]
My whole body is sick because of your judgment;[f]
I am deprived of health because of my sin.[g]
For my sins overwhelm me;[h]
like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
My wounds[i] are infected and starting to smell,[j]
because of my foolish sins.[k]
I am dazed[l] and completely humiliated;[m]
all day long I walk around mourning.
For I am overcome with shame,[n]
and my whole body is sick.[o]
I am numb with pain and severely battered;[p]
I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.[q]
O Lord, you understand my heart’s desire;[r]
my groaning is not hidden from you.
10 My heart beats quickly;
my strength leaves me.
I can hardly see.[s]
11 Because of my condition,[t] even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance;[u]
my neighbors stand far away.[v]
12 Those who seek my life try to entrap me;[w]
those who want to harm me speak destructive words.
All day long they say deceitful things.
13 But I am like a deaf man—I hear nothing;
I am like a mute who cannot speak.[x]
14 I am like a man who cannot hear
and is incapable of arguing his defense.[y]
15 Yet[z] I wait for you, O Lord!
You will respond, O Lord, my God!
16 I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me;[aa]
when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me.[ab]
17 For I am about to stumble,
and I am in constant pain.[ac]
18 Yes,[ad] I confess my wrongdoing,
and I am concerned about my sins.
19 But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous;[ae]
those who hate me without cause outnumber me.[af]
20 They repay me evil for the good I have done;
though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me.[ag]
21 Do not abandon me, O Lord.
My God, do not remain far away from me.
22 Hurry and help me,[ah] O Lord, my deliverer.

Psalm 41-42

Psalm 41[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

41 How blessed[b] is the one who treats the poor properly.[c]
When trouble comes,[d] may[e] the Lord deliver him.[f]
May the Lord protect him and save his life.[g]
May he be blessed[h] in the land.
Do not turn him over[i] to his enemies.[j]
The Lord supports[k] him on his sickbed;
you have healed him from his illness.[l]
As for me, I said:[m]
“O Lord, have mercy on me!
Heal me, for I have sinned against you.
My enemies ask this cruel question about me,[n]
‘When will he finally die and be forgotten?’[o]
When someone comes to visit,[p] he pretends to be friendly;[q]
he thinks of ways to defame me,[r]
and when he leaves he slanders me.[s]
All who hate me whisper insults about me to one another;[t]
they plan ways to harm me.
They say,[u]
‘An awful disease[v] overwhelms him,[w]
and now that he is bedridden he will never recover.’[x]
Even my close friend[y] whom I trusted,
he who shared meals with me, has turned against me.[z]
10 As for you, O Lord, have mercy on me and raise me up,
so I can pay them back!”[aa]
11 By this[ab] I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does[ac] not triumph[ad] over me.
12 As for me, you uphold[ae] me because of my integrity;[af]
you allow[ag] me permanent access to your presence.[ah]
13 The Lord God of Israel deserves praise[ai]
in the future and forevermore.[aj]
We agree! We agree![ak]

Book 2 (Psalms 42-72)

Psalm 42[al]

For the music director, a well-written song[am] by the Korahites.

42 As a deer[an] longs[ao] for streams of water,
so I long[ap] for you, O God!
I thirst[aq] for God,
for the living God.
I say,[ar] “When will I be able to go and appear in God’s presence?”[as]
I cannot eat; I weep day and night.[at]
All day long they say to me,[au] “Where is your God?”
I will remember and weep.[av]
For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God,
shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival.[aw]
Why are you depressed,[ax] O my soul?[ay]
Why are you upset?[az]
Wait[ba] for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[bb]
I am depressed,[bc]
so I will pray to you while in the region of the upper Jordan,[bd]
from Hermon,[be] from Mount Mizar.[bf]
One deep stream calls out to another[bg] at the sound of your waterfalls;[bh]
all your billows and waves overwhelm me.[bi]
By day the Lord decrees his loyal love,[bj]
and by night he gives me a song,[bk]
a prayer[bl] to the God of my life.
I will pray[bm] to God, my high ridge:[bn]
“Why do you ignore[bo] me?
Why must I walk around mourning[bp]
because my enemies oppress me?”
10 My enemies’ taunts cut me to the bone,[bq]
as they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”[br]
11 Why are you depressed,[bs] O my soul?[bt]
Why are you upset?[bu]
Wait for God!
For I will again give thanks
to my God for his saving intervention.[bv]
