Solomon Gathers Building Materials for the Temple

(1:18)[a] Solomon ordered a temple to be built to honor the Lord, as well as a royal palace for himself.[b] (2:1) Solomon had[c] 70,000 common laborers[d] and 80,000 stonecutters[e] in the hills, in addition to 3,600 supervisors.[f]

Solomon sent a message to King Huram[g] of Tyre: “Help me[h] as you did my father David, when you sent him cedar logs[i] for the construction of his palace.[j] Look, I am ready to build a temple to honor[k] the Lord my God and to dedicate it to him in order to burn fragrant incense before him, to set out the bread that is regularly displayed,[l] and to offer burnt sacrifices each morning and evening, and on Sabbaths, new moon festivals, and at other times appointed by the Lord our God. This is something Israel must do on a permanent basis.[m] I will build a great temple, for our God is greater than all gods. Of course, who can really build a temple for him, since the sky[n] and the highest heavens cannot contain him? Who am I that I should build him a temple! It will really be only a place to offer sacrifices before him.[o]

“Now send me a man who is skilled in working with gold, silver, bronze, and iron, as well as purple-, crimson-, and blue-colored fabrics, and who knows how to engrave. He will work with my skilled craftsmen here in Jerusalem and Judah, whom my father David provided. Send me cedars, evergreens, and algum[p] trees from Lebanon, for I know your servants are adept[q] at cutting down trees in Lebanon. My servants will work with your servants to supply me with large quantities of timber, for I am building a great, magnificent temple. 10 Look, I will pay your servants who cut the timber 20,000 cors[r] of ground wheat, 20,000 cors of barley, 120,000 gallons[s] of wine, and 120,000 gallons of olive oil.”

11 King Huram[t] of Tyre sent this letter to Solomon: “Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you their king.” 12 Huram also said, “Worthy of praise is the Lord God of Israel, who made the sky and the earth! He has given King David a wise son who has discernment and insight and will build a temple for the Lord, as well as a royal palace for himself.[u] 13 Now I am sending you Huram Abi,[v] a skilled and capable man, 14 whose mother is a Danite and whose father is a Tyrian.[w] He knows how to work with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stones, and wood, as well as purple, blue, white, and crimson fabrics. He knows how to do all kinds of engraving and understands any design given to him. He will work with your skilled craftsmen and the skilled craftsmen of my lord David your father. 15 Now let my lord send to his servants the wheat, barley, olive oil, and wine he has promised; 16 we will get all the timber you need from Lebanon[x] and bring it[y] in raft-like bundles[z] by sea to Joppa. You can then haul it on up to Jerusalem.”

17 Solomon took a census of[aa] all the male resident foreigners[ab] in the land of Israel, after the census his father David had taken. There were 153,600 in all. 18 He designated[ac] 70,000 as common laborers,[ad] 80,000 as stonecutters[ae] in the hills, and 3,600 as supervisors to make sure the people completed the work.[af]

1 John 2

(My little children,[a] I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.[b]) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate[c] with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One,[d] and he himself is the atoning sacrifice[e] for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world.[f]

Keeping God’s Commandments

Now[g] by this we know that we have come to know God:[h] if we keep his commandments. The one who says “I have come to know God”[i] and yet does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in such a person. But whoever obeys his[j] word, truly in this person[k] the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in him. The one who says he resides[l] in God[m] ought himself to walk[n] just as Jesus[o] walked.

Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning.[p] The old commandment is the word that you have already[q] heard. On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you which is true in him[r] and in you, because[s] the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.[t] The one who says he is in the light but still hates[u] his fellow Christian[v] is still in the darkness. 10 The one who loves his fellow Christian[w] resides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.[x] 11 But the one who hates his fellow Christian[y] is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.[z]

Words of Reassurance

12 I am writing to you,[aa] little children, that[ab] your sins have been forgiven because of his[ac] name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, that[ad] you have known him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young people, that[ae] you have conquered the evil one.[af] 14 I have written to you, children, that[ag] you have known the Father.[ah] I have written to you, fathers, that[ai] you have known him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young people, that[aj] you are strong, and the word of God resides in you, and you have conquered the evil one.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, 16 because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions)[ak] is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains[al] forever.

Warning About False Teachers

18 Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists[am] have appeared. We know from this that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us, because if they had belonged to us, they would have remained[an] with us. But[ao] they went out from us[ap] to demonstrate[aq] that all of them do not belong to us.[ar]

20 Nevertheless you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.[as] 21 I have not written to you that[at] you do not know the truth, but that[au] you do know it, and that[av] no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ[aw] ? This one is the antichrist: the person who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father either. The person who confesses the Son has the Father also.[ax]

24 As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain[ay] in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 Now this[az] is the promise that he[ba] himself made to[bb] us: eternal life.[bc] 26 These things I have written to you about those who are trying to deceive you.[bd]

27 Now as for you, the anointing[be] that you received from him[bf] resides[bg] in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as his[bh] anointing teaches you about all things, it is true and is not a lie. Just as[bi] it[bj] has taught you, you reside[bk] in him.

Children of God

28 And now, little children, remain[bl] in him,[bm] so that when[bn] he appears we may have confidence and not shrink away from him in shame when he comes back.[bo] 29 If you know that he is righteous, you also know[bp] that everyone who practices righteousness has been fathered[bq] by him.

Nahum 1

Introduction

This is an oracle[a] about Nineveh; the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:[b]

God Takes Vengeance against His Enemies

The Lord is a zealous[c] and avenging[d] God;
the Lord is avenging and very angry.[e]
The Lord takes vengeance[f] against his foes;
he sustains his rage[g] against his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger[h] but great in power;[i]
the Lord will certainly not[j] allow the wicked[k] to go unpunished.

The Divine Warrior Destroys His Enemies but Protects His People

He marches out[l] in the whirlwind and the raging storm;
dark storm clouds billow like dust under his feet.[m]
He shouts a battle cry[n] against the sea[o] and makes it dry up;[p]
he makes all the rivers[q] run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither;[r]
the blossom of Lebanon withers.
The mountains tremble before him,[s]
the hills convulse;[t]
the earth is laid waste[u] before him,
the world and all its inhabitants[v] are laid waste.[w]
No one can withstand[x] his indignation![y]
No one can resist[z] his fierce anger![aa]
His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire,
boulders are broken up[ab] as he approaches.[ac]
The Lord is good[ad]
indeed,[ae] he is a fortress[af] in time of distress,[ag]
and he protects[ah] those who seek refuge[ai] in him.
But with an overwhelming flood[aj]
he will make a complete end of Nineveh;[ak]
he will drive[al] his enemies into darkness.

Denunciation and Destruction of Nineveh

Whatever[am] you plot[an] against the Lord, he will completely destroy![ao]
Distress[ap] will not arise[aq] a second time.
10 Surely they will be totally consumed[ar]
like[as] entangled thorn bushes,[at]
like the drink of drunkards,[au]
like very[av] dry stubble.
11 From you, O Nineveh,[aw] one has marched forth who plots evil against the Lord,
a wicked military strategist.[ax]

Oracle of Deliverance to Judah

12 This is what the Lord says:[ay]

“Even though[az] they are powerful[ba]
and what is more,[bb] even though their army is numerous[bc]
nevertheless,[bd] they will be destroyed[be] and trickle away![bf]
Although I afflicted you,
I will afflict you no more.[bg]
13 And now,[bh] I will break Assyria’s[bi] yoke bar[bj] from your neck;[bk]
I will tear apart the shackles[bl] that are on you.”[bm]

Oracle of Judgment against the King of Nineveh

14 The Lord has issued a decree against you:[bn]
“Your dynasty will come to an end.[bo]
I will destroy the idols and images in the temples of your gods.
I will desecrate[bp] your grave, because you are accursed!”[bq]

Proclamation of the Deliverance of Judah

15 (2:1)[br] Look! A herald is running[bs] on the mountains!
A messenger is proclaiming deliverance:[bt]
“Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah!
Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God![bu]
For never again[bv] will the wicked[bw] Assyrians[bx] invade[by] you;
they[bz] have been completely destroyed.”[ca]

Luke 17

Sin, Forgiveness, Faith, and Service

17 Jesus[a] said to his disciples, “Stumbling blocks are sure to come, but woe[b] to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him to have a millstone[c] tied around his neck and be thrown into the sea[d] than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.[e] Watch[f] yourselves! If[g] your brother[h] sins, rebuke him. If[i] he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to you saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive[j] him.”

The[k] apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”[l] So[m] the Lord replied,[n] “If[o] you had faith the size of[p] a mustard seed, you could say to this black mulberry[q] tree, ‘Be pulled out by the roots and planted in the sea,’[r] and it would obey[s] you.

“Would any one of you say[t] to your slave[u] who comes in from the field after plowing or shepherding sheep, ‘Come at once and sit down for a meal’?[v] Won’t[w] the master[x] instead say to him, ‘Get my dinner ready, and make yourself ready[y] to serve me while[z] I eat and drink. Then[aa] you may eat and drink’? He won’t thank the slave because he did what he was told,[ab] will he?[ac] 10 So you too, when you have done everything you were commanded to do, should say, ‘We are slaves undeserving of special praise;[ad] we have only done what was our duty.’”[ae]

The Grateful Leper

11 Now on[af] the way to Jerusalem,[ag] Jesus[ah] was passing along[ai] between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As[aj] he was entering[ak] a village, ten men with leprosy[al] met him. They[am] stood at a distance, 13 raised their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy[an] on us.” 14 When[ao] he saw them he said, “Go[ap] and show yourselves to the priests.”[aq] And[ar] as they went along, they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw he was healed, turned back, praising[as] God with a loud voice. 16 He[at] fell with his face to the ground[au] at Jesus’ feet and thanked him.[av] (Now[aw] he was a Samaritan.)[ax] 17 Then[ay] Jesus said,[az] “Were[ba] not ten cleansed? Where are the other[bb] nine? 18 Was no one found to turn back and give praise to God except this foreigner?”[bc] 19 Then[bd] he said to the man,[be] “Get up and go your way. Your faith has made you well.”[bf]

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 Now at one point[bg] the Pharisees[bh] asked Jesus[bi] when the kingdom of God[bj] was coming, so he answered, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs[bk] to be observed, 21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is[bl] in your midst.”[bm]

The Coming of the Son of Man

22 Then[bn] he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days[bo] of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 Then people[bp] will say to you, ‘Look, there he is!’[bq] or ‘Look, here he is!’ Do not go out or chase after them.[br] 24 For just like the lightning flashes[bs] and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.[bt] 25 But first he must[bu] suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 Just[bv] as it was[bw] in the days of Noah,[bx] so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People[by] were eating,[bz] they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage—right up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then[ca] the flood came and destroyed them all.[cb] 28 Likewise, just as it was[cc] in the days of Lot, people[cd] were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; 29 but on the day Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.[ce] 30 It will be the same on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, anyone who is on the roof,[cf] with his goods in the house, must not come down[cg] to take them away, and likewise the person in the field must not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife![ch] 33 Whoever tries to keep[ci] his life[cj] will lose it,[ck] but whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.[cl] 35 There will be two women grinding grain together;[cm] one will be taken and the other left.”[cn]

37 Then[co] the disciples[cp] said[cq] to him, “Where,[cr] Lord?” He replied to them, “Where the dead body[cs] is, there the vultures[ct] will gather.”[cu]
