Hezekiah Observes the Passover

30 Hezekiah sent messages throughout Israel and Judah; he even wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, summoning them to come to the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem and observe a Passover celebration for the Lord God of Israel. The king, his officials, and the entire assembly in Jerusalem decided to observe the Passover in the second month. They were unable to observe it at the regular[a] time because not enough priests had consecrated themselves and the people had not assembled in Jerusalem. The proposal seemed appropriate to[b] the king and the entire assembly. So they sent an edict[c] throughout Israel from Beer Sheba to Dan, summoning the people[d] to come and observe a Passover for the Lord God of Israel in Jerusalem, for they had not observed it on a nationwide scale as prescribed in the law.[e] Messengers[f] delivered the letters from the king and his officials throughout Israel and Judah.

This royal edict read:[g] “O Israelites, return to the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so he may return[h] to you who have been spared from the kings of Assyria.[i] Don’t be like your fathers and brothers who were unfaithful to the Lord God of their ancestors,[j] provoking him to destroy them,[k] as you can see. Now, don’t be stubborn[l] like your fathers. Submit[m] to the Lord and come to his sanctuary which he has permanently consecrated. Serve the Lord your God so that he might relent from his raging anger.[n] For if you return to the Lord, your brothers and sons will be shown mercy by their captors and return to this land. The Lord your God is merciful and compassionate; he will not reject you[o] if you return to him.”

10 The messengers journeyed from city to city through the land of Ephraim and Manasseh as far as Zebulun, but people mocked and ridiculed them.[p] 11 But some men from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem. 12 In Judah God moved the people to unite[q] and carry out the edict of the king and the officers in keeping with the Lord’s message. 13 A huge crowd assembled in Jerusalem to observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month.[r] 14 They removed the altars in Jerusalem; they also removed all the incense altars and threw them into the Kidron Valley.[s]

15 They slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priests and Levites were ashamed, so they consecrated themselves and brought burnt sacrifices to the Lord’s temple. 16 They stood at their posts according to the regulations outlined in the law of Moses, the man of God. The priests were splashing the blood as the Levites handed it to them.[t] 17 Because many in the assembly had not consecrated themselves, the Levites slaughtered[u] the Passover lambs of all who were ceremonially unclean and could not consecrate their sacrifice to the Lord.[v] 18 The majority of the many people from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun were ceremonially unclean, yet they ate the Passover in violation of what is prescribed in the law.[w] For Hezekiah prayed for them, saying: “May the Lord, who is good, forgive[x] 19 everyone who has determined to follow God,[y] the Lord God of his ancestors, even if he is not ceremonially clean according to the standards of the temple.”[z] 20 The Lord responded favorably[aa] to Hezekiah and forgave[ab] the people.

21 The Israelites who were in Jerusalem observed the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days with great joy. The Levites and priests were praising the Lord every day with all their might.[ac] 22 Hezekiah expressed his appreciation to all the Levites,[ad] who demonstrated great skill in serving the Lord.[ae] They feasted for the seven days of the festival,[af] and were making peace offerings and giving thanks to the Lord God of their ancestors.

23 The entire assembly then decided to celebrate for seven more days; so they joyfully celebrated for seven more days. 24 King Hezekiah of Judah supplied 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep[ag] for the assembly, while the officials supplied them[ah] with 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep. Many priests consecrated themselves. 25 The celebration included[ai] the entire assembly of Judah, the priests, the Levites, the entire assembly of those who came from Israel, the resident foreigners[aj] who came from the land of Israel, and those who were residents of Judah. 26 There was a great celebration in Jerusalem, unlike anything that had occurred in Jerusalem since the time of King Solomon son of David of Israel.[ak] 27 The priests and Levites got up and pronounced blessings on the people. The Lord responded favorably to them[al] as their prayers reached his holy dwelling place in heaven.

Revelation 16

The Bowls of God’s Wrath

16 Then[a] I heard a loud voice from the temple declaring to the seven angels: “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls containing God’s wrath.”[b] So[c] the first angel[d] went and poured out his bowl on the earth. Then[e] ugly and painful sores[f] appeared on the people[g] who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

Next,[h] the second angel[i] poured out his bowl on the sea and it turned into blood, like that of a corpse, and every living creature that was in the sea died.

Then[j] the third angel[k] poured out his bowl on the rivers and the springs of water, and they turned into blood. Now[l] I heard the angel of the waters saying:

“You are just[m]—the one who is and who was,
the Holy One—because you have passed these judgments,[n]
because they poured out the blood of your saints and prophets,
so[o] you have given them blood to drink. They got what they deserved!”[p]

Then[q] I heard the altar reply,[r] “Yes, Lord God, the All-Powerful,[s] your judgments are true and just!”

Then[t] the fourth angel[u] poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was permitted to scorch people[v] with fire. Thus[w] people[x] were scorched by the terrible heat,[y] yet[z] they blasphemed the name of God, who has ruling authority[aa] over these plagues, and they would not repent and give him glory.

10 Then[ab] the fifth angel[ac] poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast so that[ad] darkness covered his kingdom,[ae] and people[af] began to bite[ag] their tongues because[ah] of their pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their sufferings[ai] and because of their sores,[aj] but nevertheless[ak] they still refused to repent[al] of their deeds.

12 Then[am] the sixth angel[an] poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates and dried up its water[ao] to prepare the way[ap] for the kings from the east.[aq] 13 Then[ar] I saw three unclean spirits[as] that looked like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are the spirits of the demons performing signs who go out to the kings of the earth[at] to bring them together for the battle that will take place on the great day of God, the All-Powerful.[au]

15 (Look ! I will come like a thief!
Blessed is the one who stays alert and does not lose[av] his clothes so that he will not have to walk around naked and his shameful condition[aw] be seen.)[ax]

16 Now[ay] the spirits[az] gathered the kings and their armies[ba] to the place that is called Armageddon[bb] in Hebrew.

17 Finally[bc] the seventh angel[bd] poured out his bowl into the air and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying: “It is done!” 18 Then[be] there were flashes of lightning, roaring,[bf] and crashes of thunder, and there was a tremendous earthquake—an earthquake unequaled since humanity[bg] has been on the earth, so tremendous was that earthquake. 19 The[bh] great city was split into three parts and the cities of the nations[bi] collapsed.[bj] So[bk] Babylon the great was remembered before God, and was given the cup[bl] filled with the wine made of God’s furious wrath.[bm] 20 Every[bn] island fled away[bo] and no mountains could be found.[bp] 21 And gigantic hailstones, weighing about a 100 pounds[bq] each, fell from heaven[br] on people,[bs] but they[bt] blasphemed God because of the plague of hail, since it[bu] was so horrendous.[bv]

Zechariah 12:1-13

The Repentance of Judah

12 This is an oracle,[a] the Lord’s message concerning Israel: The Lord—he who stretches out the heavens and lays the foundations of the earth, who forms the human spirit within a person[b]—says, “I am about to make Jerusalem a cup that brings dizziness[c] to all the surrounding nations; indeed, Judah will also be included when Jerusalem is besieged. Moreover, on that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy burden[d] for all the nations, and all who try to carry it will be seriously injured;[e] yet all the peoples of the earth will be assembled against it. On that day,” says the Lord, “I will strike every horse with confusion and its rider with madness. I will pay close attention to the house of Judah, but will strike all the horses[f] of the nations[g] with blindness. Then the leaders of Judah will say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are a means of strength to us through their God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.’ On that day[h] I will make the leaders of Judah like an igniter[i] among sticks and a burning torch among sheaves, and they will burn up all the surrounding nations right and left. Then the people of Jerusalem will settle once more in their place, the city of Jerusalem. The Lord also will deliver the homes[j] of Judah first, so that the splendor of the kingship[k] of David and of the people of Jerusalem may not exceed that of Judah. On that day the Lord himself will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the weakest among them will be like mighty David, and the dynasty of David will be like God, like the angel of the Lord before them.[l] So on that day I will set out to destroy all the nations[m] that come against Jerusalem.

10 “I will pour out on the kingship[n] of David and the population of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication so that they will look to me,[o] the one they have pierced. They will lament for him as one laments for an only son, and there will be a bitter cry for him like the bitter cry for a firstborn.[p] 11 On that day the lamentation in Jerusalem will be as great as the lamentation at Hadad Rimmon[q] in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land will mourn, each clan by itself—the clan of the royal household of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the clan of the family of Nathan[r] by itself and their wives by themselves; 13 the clan of the descendants of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; and the clan of the Shimeites[s] by itself and their wives by themselves; 14 all the clans that remain, each separately with their wives.

The Refinement of Judah

13 “In that day there will be a fountain opened up for the dynasty[t] of David and the people of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and impurity.[u]

John 15

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am the true vine[a] and my Father is the gardener.[b] He takes away[c] every branch that does not bear[d] fruit in me. He[e] prunes[f] every branch that bears[g] fruit so that it will bear more fruit. You are clean already[h] because of the word that I have spoken to you. Remain[i] in me, and I will remain in you.[j] Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself,[k] unless it remains[l] in[m] the vine, so neither can you unless you remain[n] in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains[o] in me—and I in him—bears[p] much fruit,[q] because apart from me you can accomplish[r] nothing. If anyone does not remain[s] in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire,[t] and are burned up.[u] If you remain[v] in me and my words remain[w] in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.[x] My Father is honored[y] by this, that[z] you bear[aa] much fruit and show that you are[ab] my disciples.

“Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain[ac] in my love. 10 If you obey[ad] my commandments, you will remain[ae] in my love, just as I have obeyed[af] my Father’s commandments and remain[ag] in his love. 11 I have told you these things[ah] so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete. 12 My commandment is this—to love one another just as I have loved you.[ai] 13 No one has greater love than this—that one lays down his life[aj] for his friends. 14 You are my friends[ak] if you do what I command you. 15 I no longer call you slaves,[al] because the slave does not understand[am] what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have revealed to you everything[an] I heard[ao] from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you[ap] and appointed you to go and bear[aq] fruit, fruit that remains,[ar] so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 17 This[as] I command you—to love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, be aware[at] that it hated me first.[au] 19 If you belonged to the world,[av] the world would love you as its own.[aw] However, because you do not belong to the world,[ax] but I chose you out of the world, for this reason[ay] the world hates you.[az] 20 Remember what[ba] I told you, ‘A slave[bb] is not greater than his master.’[bc] If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed[bd] my word, they will obey[be] yours too. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of[bf] my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.[bg] 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin.[bh] But they no longer have any excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates me hates my Father too. 24 If I had not performed[bi] among them the miraculous deeds[bj] that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin.[bk] But now they have seen the deeds[bl] and have hated both me and my Father.[bm] 25 Now this happened[bn] to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without reason.’[bo] 26 When the Advocate[bp] comes, whom I will send you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he[bq] will testify about me, 27 and you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
