M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
47 7 Jacob cometh before Pharaoh, and telleth him his age. 11 The land of Goshen is given him. 22 The idolatrous priests have living of the King. 28 Jacob’s age when he dieth.
1 Then came Joseph and told Pharaoh, and said, My father, and my brethren, and their sheep, and their cattle, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan, and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.
2 And Joseph took part of his brethren, even [a]five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.
3 When Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your trade? And they answered Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers.
4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come: for thy servants have no pasture for their sheep, so sore is the famine in the land of Canaan, Now therefore, we pray thee: let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.
5 Then spake Pharaoh to Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee.
6 The [b]land of Egypt is before thee: in the best place of the land make thy father and thy brethren to dwell: let them dwell in the land of Goshen: and if thou knowest that there be men of activity among them, make them rulers over my cattle.
7 Joseph also brought Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh. And Jacob [c]saluted Pharaoh.
8 Then Pharaoh said unto Jacob, [d]How old art thou?
9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The whole time of my (A)pilgrimage is an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of my life been, and I have not attained unto the years of the life of my fathers, in the days of their pilgrimages.
10 And Jacob [e]took leave of Pharaoh, and departed from the presence of Pharaoh.
11 ¶ And Joseph placed his father, and his brethren, and gave them possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, even in the land of [f]Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12 ¶ And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father’s household with bread [g]even to the young children.
13 ¶ Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was exceeding sore: so that the land of Egypt, and the land of Canaan were [h]famished by reason of the famine.
14 And Joseph gathered all the money, that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought, and [i]Joseph laid up the money in Pharaoh’s house.
15 So when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, then all the Egyptians came unto Joseph and said, Give us bread: for why should we die before thee? for our money is spent.
16 Then said Joseph, Bring your cattle, and I will give you for your cattle, if your money be spent.
17 So they brought their cattle unto Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses, and for the flocks of sheep, and for the herds of cattle, and for the asses: so he fed them with bread for all their cattle that year.
18 But when the year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide from my lord, that since our money is spent, and my lord hath the herds of the cattle, there is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies and our ground.
19 Why shall we perish in thy sight, both we and our [j]land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be bound to Pharaoh: therefore give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land go not to waste.
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh: for the Egyptians sold every man his ground, because the famine was sore upon them: so the land became Pharaoh’s.
21 And he [k]removed the people unto the cities, [l]from one side of Egypt even to the other.
22 Only the land of the Priests bought he not: for the Priests had an ordinary of Pharaoh, and they did eat their ordinary, which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their ground.
23 Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day, and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you: sow therefore the ground.
24 And of the increase ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be yours for seed of the field, and for your meat, and for them of your households, and for your children to eat.
25 Then they answered, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.
26 Then Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, [m]except the land of the Priests only, which was not Pharaoh’s.
27 ¶ And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen: and they had their possessions therein, and grew and multiplied exceedingly.
28 Moreover, Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.
29 Now when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If I have now found grace in thy sight, (B)put thine hand now under my thigh, and deal mercifully and truly with me: bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt.
30 But when I shall [n]sleep with my fathers, thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burial. And he answered, I will do as thou hast said.
31 Then he said, swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel [o]worshipped towards the bed’s head.
The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ, According to Luke
1 Luke: Preface 5 Zacharias and Elizabeth. 15 What an one John should be. 20 Zacharias stricken dumb, for his incredulity. 26 The Angel saluteth Mary, and foretelleth Christ’s nativity. 39 Mary visited Elizabeth. 46 Mary’s song. 68 The song of Zacharias, showing that the promised Christ is come. 76 The office of John.
1 Forasmuch as [a]many have [b]taken in hand to set forth the story of those things, whereof we are fully persuaded,
2 [c]As they have delivered them unto us, which from the beginning saw them themselves, and were ministers of the word,
3 It seemed good also to me ([d]most noble Theophilus) as soon as I had searched out perfectly all things [e]from the beginning, to write unto thee thereof from point to point,
4 That thou mightest [f]acknowledge the certainty of those things whereof thou hast been instructed.
5 In [g]the [h]time of [i]Herod King of Judea, there was a certain Priest named Zacharias, of the (A)[j]course of Abijah: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6 Both were [k]just before God, and [l]walked in all the [m]commandments and ordinances of the Lord, [n]without reproof.
7 And they had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren: and both were well stricken in age.
8 And it came to pass, as he executed the Priest’s office before God, as his course came in order,
9 (B)According to the custom of the Priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense, when he went into the [o]Temple of the Lord.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were without in prayer, (C)while the incense was burning.
11 Then appeared unto him an Angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the Altar of incense.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the Angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the [p]sight of the Lord, and shall neither drink wine, nor [q]strong drink: and he shall be filled with the holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
16 (D)And many of the children of Israel shall he [r]turn to their Lord God.
17 (E)For he shall go [s]before him [t]in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the [u]hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the [v]wisdom of the just men, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 Then Zacharias said unto the Angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is of a great age.
19 And the Angel answered, and said unto him, I am Gabriel [w]that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these good tidings.
20 And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not be able to speak, until the day that these things be done, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 Now the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he tarried so long in the Temple.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: then they perceived that he had seen a vision in the Temple: for he made signs unto them, and remained dumb.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his office were fulfilled, that he departed to his own house.
24 And after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me, in the days wherein he looked on me, to take from me my rebuke among men.
26 ¶ [x]And in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 (F)To a virgin affianced to a man whose name was Joseph, of the [y]house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the Angel went in unto her, and said, Hail thou that art [z]freely beloved: the Lord is with thee: [aa]blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was [ab]troubled at his saying, and thought what manner of salutation that should be.
30 Then the Angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast [ac]found favor with God.
31 (G)For lo thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bear a son, (H)and shalt call his Name Jesus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be [ad]called the Son of the most High, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.
33 (I)And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom shall be none end.
34 Then said Mary unto the Angel, [ae]How shall this be, seeing [af]I know not man?
35 And the Angel answered, and said unto her, The holy Ghost [ag]shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee: therefore also that [ah]Holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be [ai]called the Son of God.
36 And behold, thy [aj]cousin, Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is her [ak]sixth month, which was called barren.
37 For with God shall nothing be impossible.
38 Then Mary said, Behold the servant of the Lord: be it unto me according to thy word. So the Angel departed from her.
13 3 Job compareth his knowledge with the experience of his friends. 16 The penitent shall be saved, and the hypocrite condemned, 20 He prayeth unto God, that he would not handle him rigorously.
1 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this: mine ear hath heard, and understood it.
2 I know also as much as you know: I am not inferior unto you.
3 But I will speak to the Almighty, and I desire [a]to dispute with God.
4 For indeed ye forge lies, and all you are [b]physicians of no value.
5 Oh, that you would hold your tongue, that it might be imputed to you for wisdom!
6 Now hear my disputation, and give ear to the arguments of my lips.
7 Will ye speak [c]wickedly for God’s defense, and talk deceitfully for his cause?
8 Will ye accept his person? or will ye contend for God?
9 Is it well that he should seek of you? will you make a lie for him, as one lieth for a man?
10 He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept any person.
11 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his fear fall upon you?
12 Your [d]memories may be compared unto ashes, and your bodies unto bodies of clay.
13 Hold your tongues in my presence, that I may speak, and let come upon what will.
14 Wherefore do I [e]take my flesh in my teeth, and put my soul in my hand?
15 Lo, though he slay me, yet will I trust in him, and I will reprove my ways in his sight.
16 He shall be my salvation also: for the [f]hypocrite shall not come before him.
17 Hear diligently my words, and mark my talk.
18 Behold now: if I prepare me to judgment, I know that I shall be [g]justified.
19 Who is he that will plead [h]with me? for if I now hold my tongue, I [i]die.
20 But do not these two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.
21 [j]Withdraw thine hand from me, and let not thy fear make me afraid.
22 Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.
23 How many are [k]mine iniquities and sins, show me my rebellion and my sin.
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and takest me for thine enemy?
25 Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?
26 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the [l]iniquities of my youth.
27 Thou puttest my feet also in the [m]stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths, and makest the print thereof in the [n]heels of my feet.
28 Such a one consumeth like a rotten thing, and as a garment that is moth-eaten.
The First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians
1 After the salutation, 10 which in effect is an exhortation. 12 He reprehendeth the Corinthians’ sects and divisions, 17 and calleth them from pride to humility: 20 For overthrowing all worldly wisdom. 23, 25 he advanceth only the preaching of the cross.
1 Paul [a]called to be an [b]Apostle of Jesus Christ, through the will of God, and our brother [c]Sosthenes,
2 [d]Unto the Church of God, which is at Corinth, to them that are (A)[e]sanctified in [f]Christ Jesus, (B)Saints by [g]calling, (C)with all that [h]call on the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both their Lord, and ours:
3 [i]Grace be with you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 [j]I thank my God always on your behalf for the grace of God, which is given you in Jesus Christ.
5 That in all things ye are made rich in him [k]in [l]all kind of speech, and in all knowledge:
6 [m]As the testimony of Jesus Christ hath been [n]confirmed in you:
7 So that ye are not destitute of any gift: (D)[o]waiting for the [p]appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
8 (E)[q]Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be [r]blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 (F)God is [s]faithful, by whom ye are called unto the fellowship of his son Jesus Christ our Lord.
10 [t]Now I beseech you, brethren, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that [u]ye all speak one thing, and that there be no dissensions among you: but be ye [v]knit together in one mind, and in one judgment.
11 [w]For it hath been declared unto me, my brethren, of you by them that are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
12 Now [x]this I say, that every one of you saith, I am Paul’s, and I am (G)Apollos’s, and I am Cephas’s and I am Christ’s.
13 [y]Is Christ divided? was [z]Paul crucified for you? either were ye [aa]baptized into the name of Paul?
14 [ab]I thank God, that I baptized none of you, but (H)Crispus, and Gaius,
15 Lest any should say, that I had baptized into mine own name.
16 I baptized also the household of Stephanas: furthermore know I not, whether I baptized any other.
17 [ac]For CHRIST sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel, [ad]not with (I)[ae]wisdom of words, lest the [af]cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
18 For that [ag]preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness: but unto us, which are saved, it is the (J)[ah]power of God.
19 [ai]For it is written, (K)I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will cast away the understanding of the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the [aj]Scribe? where is the [ak]disputer of this world? hath not God made the wisdom of this world foolishness?
21 [al]For seeing the [am]world by wisdom knew not God in the [an]wisdom of GOD, [ao]it pleased God by the [ap]foolishness of preaching to save them that believe:
22 (L)[aq]Seeing also that the Jews require a sign, and the Grecians seek after wisdom.
23 But we preach Christ crucified: unto the Jews, even a stumbling block, and unto the Grecians, foolishness:
24 But unto them which are called, both of the Jews and Grecians, we preach Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 [ar]For brethren, you see your [as]calling, how that not many wise men [at]after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called.
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world, to confound the mighty things,
28 And vile things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, and things which [au]are not, to bring to [av]nought things that are.
29 That no [aw]flesh should rejoice in his presence.
30 But ye are [ax]of him in Christ Jesus, [ay]who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.
31 That, according as it is written, (M)[az]He that rejoiceth, let him rejoice in the Lord.
