10 Moreover, that entire generation was gathered to their[a] ancestors,[b] and another generation grew up after them who did not know Yahweh or the work he had done for Israel.[c]
Israel Worships the Baals
11 The Israelites[d] did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and they served[e] the Baals. 12 They abandoned Yahweh the God of their ancestors,[f] who brought them out from the land of Egypt. They followed[g] other gods from the gods of the people who were around them; and they bowed down to them, and they provoked the anger of Yahweh. 13 They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 So the anger of Yahweh was kindled[h] against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of plunderers; and they plundered them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies from all sides. They were unable to withstand their enemies any longer. 15 Whenever[i] they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them to harm them, just as Yahweh warned, and just as Yahweh had sworn to them. And they were very distressed.[j]
16 Then Yahweh raised up leaders,[k] and they delivered them from the hand of their plunderers. 17 But they did not listen to their leaders,[l] but lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They turned away quickly from the way that their ancestors[m] went, who had obeyed the commandment of Yahweh; they did not do as their ancestors. 18 And when Yahweh raised leaders[n] for them, Yahweh was with the leader,[o] and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the leader,[p] for Yahweh was moved by their groaning because of their persecutors and oppressors. 19 But when the leader[q] died they relapsed and acted corruptly, more than their ancestors,[r] following other gods, serving them,[s] and bowing down to them. They would not give up their deeds or their stubborn ways. 20 So the anger of Yahweh burned[t] against Israel, and he said, “Because this people transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors,[u] and have not obeyed my voice, 21 I will not again drive out anyone from before them from the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to test Israel whether or not they would observe the way of Yahweh, to walk in it just as their ancestors[v] did.” 23 So Yahweh left those nations; he did not drive them out at once, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.
Some Nations Remain in the Land
3 These are the nations that Yahweh left, to test Israel by them (that is, to test all those who had not experienced[w] any of the wars of Canaan, 2 in order that the generations of Israel would know war, to teach those who had not experienced it[x] before): 3 the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites,[y] the Sidonians,[z] and the Hivites[aa] living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath. 4 They were left for testing Israel, to know whether they would keep the commands of Yahweh that he commanded their ancestors[ab] through the hand of Moses. 5 And the Israelites[ac] lived in the midst of the Canaanites,[ad] the Hittites,[ae] the Amorites,[af] the Perizzites,[ag] the Hivites,[ah] and the Jebusites.[ai] 6 And they took their daughters as wives for themselves, and they gave their daughters to their sons, and they served their gods.[aj]
Othniel
7 The Israelites[ak] did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. They forgot Yahweh their God, and they served the Baals and the Asheroth.[al] 8 And the anger of Yahweh was kindled[am] against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the Israelites[an] served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. 9 The Israelites[ao] cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a deliverer for the Israelites[ap] who delivered them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 And the spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and he prevailed over[aq] Cushan-Rishathaim. 11 So the land rested forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.
Ehud
12 And again the Israelites[ar] did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. So Yahweh strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. 13 He gathered to himself the Ammonites and Amalekites,[as] and he went and defeated Israel, and they took possession of the city of palms. 14 And the Israelites[at] served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.
15 And the Israelites[au] cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and a left-handed man.[av] And the Israelites[aw] sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab through him.[ax] 16 Ehud made for himself a short, two-edged[ay] sword (a cubit in length), and he fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17 Then he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 When Ehud[az] had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19 But he turned back from the sculptured stones[ba] that were near Gilgal, and he said, “I have a secret message[bb] for you, O king.” And he[bc] said, “Silence!” So all those standing in his presence went out, 20 and Ehud came to him while he was sitting alone in his cool upper room. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God[bd] for you.” So he got up from his seat. 21 Then Ehud reached with his left hand for the sword on his right thigh, and he thrust it into his[be] stomach. 22 And the handle also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade because he did not draw back the sword from his stomach; and it went protruding out the back.[bf] 23 And Ehud went out the vestibule, and he closed the doors of the upper room and locked them behind him.
24 After he left, his servants returned. When they saw that the doors of the upper room were locked, they thought,[bg] “Surely he is relieving himself[bh] in the cool inner room.” 25 And they waited so long they became embarrassed because he did not open the doors of the upper room. So they took the key and opened the doors, and there their lord was lying on the ground dead.
26 And Ehud escaped while they delayed. He passed by the sculptured stones[bi] and escaped to Seirah. 27 And when he arrived he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites[bj] went down from the hill country with him leading them. 28 And he said to them, “Follow after me! Yahweh has given Moab your enemies into your hand.” So they went down after him, and they captured the fords of the Jordan toward Moab; and they did not allow anyone to cross over. 29 And they struck Moab at that time, about ten thousand men, all strong and able men;[bk] no one escaped. 30 And Moab was subdued on that day under the hand of Israel. And the land rested eighty years.[bl]
Shamgar
31 And Shamgar son of Anath came after him, and he killed six hundred Philistines with the goad of an ox; he also delivered Israel.
The Lord’s Supper
14 And when the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired[a] to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you that I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took in hand a cup, and[b] after[c] giving thanks he said, “Take this and share it[d] among yourselves. 18 For I tell you,[e] from now on I will not drink of the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, and[f] after[g] giving thanks, he broke it[h] and gave it[i] to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And in the same way the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you.
21 “But behold, the hand of the one who is betraying me is with me on the table! 22 For the Son of Man is going according to what has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to debate with one another who then of them it could be who was going to do this.
A Dispute About Who Is Greatest
24 And a dispute also occurred among them as to which of them was recognized as being greatest. 25 So he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles[j] lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like this! But the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am in your midst as the one who serves.
28 “And you are the ones who have remained[k] with me in my trials, 29 and I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred on me, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, when[l] once you have turned back,[m] strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!” 34 And he said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me!”
Thanksgiving to Yahweh for Victory
A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day.[a]
92 It is good to give thanks to Yahweh,
and to sing praise concerning your name, O Most High;
2 to declare in the morning your loyal love
and your faithfulness in the night,
3 on the ten string, and on the harp,
with a melody on the lyre.
4 For you, O Yahweh, have made me glad by your work;
by the deeds of your hands I sing for joy.
5 How great are your deeds, O Yahweh;
how very deep are your thoughts.
6 The brutish man does not know,
and the fool cannot understand this.
7 When the wicked flourish like grass
and all the workers of evil blossom,
it is so they can be destroyed forever.
8 But you are on high forever, O Yahweh.
9 For behold, your enemies, O Yahweh,
for behold, your enemies will perish.
All the workers of evil will be scattered.
10 But you have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox;
you have anointed me[b] with fresh oil.
11 And so my eye looks on my enemies.[c]
My ears hear those evildoers who rise up against me.
12 The righteous[d] will flourish like the date palm.
They will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 Planted in the house[e] of Yahweh,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still prosper in old age.
They will be fat and luxuriant,[f]
15 to declare that Yahweh is upright.
He is my rock, and there is no injustice[g] in him.
Yahweh Is King Over All the Earth
93 Yahweh is king; he clothes himself with majesty.
Yahweh clothes himself; he girds himself with might.
Yes, the world is established so that it will not be moved.
2 Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
3 The rivers have lifted up, O Yahweh;
the rivers have lifted up their rumbling;[h]
the rivers have lifted up their pounding.
4 Mightier than the rumblings of many waters,
mightier than the mighty breakers of the sea,
Yahweh on high is mighty.
5 Your testimonies are fully reliable.
Holiness is fitting for your house,[i]
O Yahweh, forever.[j]
14 The wisest of women[a] builds her house,
but the foolish tears it down with her hands.
2 He who walks in uprightness fears Yahweh,
but he who is devious in his ways displeases him.
