Version
Deuteronomy 32:28-52

28 For they are a nation void of sense,[a]
    and there is not any understanding in them.
29 If only they were wise, they would understand this;
    they would discern for themselves their end.[b]
30 How could one chase a thousand
    and two could cause a myriad to flee,
if their Rock had not sold them,
    and Yahweh had not given them up?
31 For the fact of the matter is,
    their rock is not like our Rock,
    and our enemies recognize[c] this.
32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
    and from the terraces of Gomorrah;
their grapes are grapes of poison;
    their clusters are bitter.[d]
33 Their wine is the poison of snakes,
    and the deadly poison of horned vipers.
34 Is not this stored up with me,
    sealed in my treasuries?’[e]
35 Vengeance belongs to me[f] and also recompense,
    for at the time their foot slips,[g]
because the day of their disaster is near,
    and fate comes quickly for them.’[h]
36 For Yahweh will judge on behalf of his people,
    and concerning his servants;
he will change his mind when he sees that their power has disappeared,
    and there is no one left, confined[i] or free.[j]
37 And he will say, ‘Where are their gods,
    their rock in whom[k] they took refuge?
38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices
    and drank the wine of their libations?
Let them rise up, and let them help you;
    Let them be to you a refuge.[l]
39 See, now, that I, even I am he,
    and there is not a god besides me;
I put to death and I give life;
    I wound and I heal;
    there is not one who delivers from my hand!
40 For indeed I lift up my hand to heaven,
    And I promise as I live forever,[m]
41 When I sharpen[n] my flashing sword,[o]
    and my hand takes hold[p] of it in judgment,
I will take reprisals against my foes,[q]
    and my haters I will repay.
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,
    and my sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain,
    and captives[r] from the heads[s] of the leaders of the enemy.’
43 Call for songs of joy, O nations, concerning his people,[t]
    for the blood of his servants he will avenge,
and he will take reprisals against his foes,[u]
    and he will make atonement for his land, his people.”

44 And Moses came, and he spoke[v] all the words of this song in the ears of the people; that is, he and Joshua the son of Nun. 45 And when Moses finished speaking[w] all these words to all Israel, 46 then he said to them, “Take to heart all the words[x] that I am admonishing against you today[y] concerning which you should instruct them with respect to your children[z] so that they will observe diligently[aa] all the words of this law, 47 for it is not a trifling matter among you, but it is your life, and through this word you will live long in the land[ab] that you are about to cross the Jordan to get there to take possession of it.”

Instructions Concerning Moses’ Death

48 And Yahweh said to Moses on exactly this day, saying,[ac] 49 “Go up to this mountain of the Abarim range, Mount Nebo, which is opposite Jericho,[ad] and see the land of Canaan that I am giving to the Israelites[ae] as a possession. 50 You shall die on that mountain that you are about to go up there, and you will be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor[af] and he was gathered to his people, 51 because of the fact that you broke faith with me in the midst of Israel at the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the desert of Zin, because you did not treat me as holy[ag] in the midst of the Israelites.[ah] 52 Yes, from afar you may view the land, but there you shall not enter there, that is, into the land that I am giving to the Israelites.”[ai]

Luke 12:35-59

On the Alert for the Master’s Return

35 You must be prepared for action[a] and your[b] lamps burning. 36 And you, be like people who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast,[c] so that when he[d] comes back and knocks, they can open the door[e] for him immediately. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he returns! Truly I say to you that he will dress himself for service and have them recline at the table and will come by and[f] serve them. 38 Even if he should come back in the second or in the third watch of the night and find them[g] like this, blessed are they! 39 But understand this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not think he will come.”[h]

A Faithful Slave and an Unfaithful Slave

41 And Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us, or also for everyone?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful wise manager whom the master will put in charge over his servants to give them[i] their[j] food allowance at the right time? 43 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find so doing when he[k] comes back. 44 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But if that slave should say to himself,[l] ‘My master is taking a long time to return,’ and he begins to beat the male slaves and the female slaves and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in two and assign his place with the unbelievers. 47 And that slave who knew the will of his master and did not prepare or do according to his will will be given a severe beating.[m] 48 But the one who did not know and did things deserving blows will be given a light beating.[n] And from everyone to whom much has been given, much will be demanded, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will ask him for even more.

Not Peace, But a Sword of Divisiveness

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish that it had been kindled already! 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how I am distressed until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to grant peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 52 For from now on there will be five in one household, divided three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

The Signs of the Times

54 And he also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud coming up in the west, you say at once, ‘A rainstorm is coming,’ and so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be burning heat,’ and it happens. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to evaluate the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it you do not know how to evaluate this present time?

Settle Accounts Quickly

57 And why do you not also judge for yourselves what is right? 58 For as you are going with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to come to a settlement with him on the way, so that he will not drag you to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff will throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid back even the last cent!”[o]

Psalm 78:56-64

56 But they tested and rebelled against God Most High
and did not keep his statutes.
57 And they turned and were treacherous like their ancestors.[a]
They twisted like a crooked[b] bow.
58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places,
and made him jealous with their images.
59 God heard and he was very angry
and rejected Israel utterly.
60 So he abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh,
the tent he had placed among humankind.
61 And he gave his strength into captivity
and his splendor into the hand of the enemy.
62 He also handed his people over to the sword,
and he was very angry with his inheritance.
63 Fire devoured his young men,
and his young women[c] were not praised.
64 His priests fell by the sword,
and his widows did not weep.

Proverbs 12:24

24 The hand of the diligent ones will rule,
    but the lazy will belong to forced labor.
