Deuteronomy 34 - Joshua 2

The Death of Moses and the Commissioning of Joshua

34 Then Moses went up from the desert plateau[a] of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite[b] Jericho, and Yahweh showed him all of the land, Gilead all the way up to Dan, and all of Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and all of the land of Judah, up to the western sea,[c] and the Negev and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palms, on up to Zoar. And Yahweh said to him, “This is the land that I swore to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob, saying,[d] ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross into it.”[e] Then Moses, the servant of Yahweh, died there in the land of Moab according to the command of Yahweh.[f] And he[g] buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor. But until this day no one knows his burial site. Now Moses was a hundred and twenty years old[h] when he died;[i] his sight was not impaired and his vigor had not abated.[j] And the Israelites[k] wept concerning Moses thirty days; finally the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were completed.

Now[l] Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom because Moses had placed his hands on him, and the Israelites[m] listened to him, and they did as Yahweh had commanded Moses. 10 And not again[n] has a prophet arisen in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew[o] face to face, 11 as far as all the signs and the wonders Yahweh sent him to do in the land of Egypt, against[p] Pharaoh and all of his servants and against[q] all of his land, 12 and as far as all of the mighty deeds[r] and as far as the great awesome wonders[s] Moses did before the eyes of all Israel.

Joshua Addresses the Israelites

After the death of Moses the servant of Yahweh, Yahweh said to Joshua son of Nun, the assistant[t] of Moses, saying, “My servant Moses is dead. Get up and cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites.[u] Every place that the soles of your feet will tread, I have given it to you, as I promised[v] to Moses. From the wilderness and the Lebanon,[w] up to the great river, the river Euphrates, all of the land of the Hittites, and up to the great sea in the west,[x] will be your territory. No one will stand before you[y] all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will not fail you, and I will not forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors[z] to give them. Only be strong and very courageous to observe diligently the whole law[aa] that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn aside from it, to the right or left, so that you may succeed wherever you go.[ab] The scroll of this law will not depart from your mouth; you will meditate on it day and night so that you may observe diligently all that is written[ac] in it. For then you will succeed in your ways and prosper. Did I not command you? Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”[ad] 10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people: ‘Prepare your provisions;[ae] in[af] three days you are to cross the Jordan to go possess the land that Yahweh your God is giving you to possess.’”

12 To the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, 13 “Remember the word that Moses Yahweh’s servant commanded you, saying, ‘Yahweh your God is giving rest to you, and he is giving[ag] you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little children, and your livestock, they will remain in the land that Moses gave to you beyond the Jordan. All of the best fighting men[ah] will cross armed in front of your families; they will help you 15 until Yahweh gives rest to your families as well as to you. They will take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them. Then you will return to your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan to the east.”[ai] 16 And they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you will send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses, so will we obey you. Only may Yahweh your God be with you, as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your orders[aj] and does not obey your words according to what you commanded us will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

Spies View the Land

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove[ak] as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night[al] there. The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some men from the Israelites[am] have come here tonight to search out the land.” And the king of Jericho sent for Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who came to you, the ones who have entered your house, for they have come to search out the whole land.” But the woman took the two men and hid them. And she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And when it was time to shut the gate for the night,[an] the men left, and I do not know where they went. Chase after them quickly, for you may catch up to them.” (But she had taken them to the roof and had hidden them in the stalks of flax[ao] that she had spread out[ap] on the roof.) So the men chased after them on the way to the Jordan[aq] at the fords; and they shut the gate behind the pursuers that had gone out after them.

Before they went to sleep,[ar] she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence. 10 For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the waters of the Red Sea[as] before you when you went out from Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. 11 We heard this, and our hearts[at] melted, and no courage was left in anyone[au] because of your presence. For Yahweh your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below. 12 So then please swear to me by Yahweh, because I have shown loyalty to you,[av] and you will also show loyalty[aw] to my family.[ax] You must give me a sign of good faith,[ay] 13 and you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all that belongs to them; you will deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our lives for yours.[az] If you do not report this business of ours, we will show you loyalty and faithfulness[ba] when Yahweh gives us the land.”

15 Then she lowered them with a rope through the window, as her house was on the outer side of the wall, and she was residing in the wall. 16 And she said to them, “Go to the mountain, so that the pursuers will not find you, and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers return, and afterward you may go on your way.”[bb] 17 The men said to her, “We will be released from this oath of yours that you made us swear. 18 When we come to the land, you must tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you must gather your father and mother, and your brothers, and your whole family to your house. 19 If anyone goes outside the doors of your house, they will be responsible for their own death,[bc] and we will be innocent. Anyone who will be with you in the house, we will be responsible for their death[bd] if a hand is laid on them.[be] 20 But if you report this business of ours, we will be released from your oath that you made us swear.” 21 And she said, “According to your word it will be.” Then she sent them away, and they went, and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

22 They departed and came to the mountain, and they stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers searched all along the way[bf] but did not find them. 23 The two men returned and went down from the mountain, and they crossed over and came to Joshua son of Nun, and they told him everything that happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “Surely Yahweh has given all the land into our hand; also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of our presence.”

Luke 13:22-14:6

The Narrow Door

22 And he was going throughout towns and villages, teaching and making his journey toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, are there only[a] a few who are saved?” And he said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able to, 25 when once the master of the house has gotten up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open the door[b] for us!’ And he will answer and[c] say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from!’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets!’ 27 And he will reply, saying to you, ‘I do not know where you are from! Go away from me, all you evildoers!’[d] 28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown outside! 29 And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

The Lament over Jerusalem

31 At that same hour some Pharisees came up and[e] said to him, “Go out and depart from here, because Herod wants to kill you!” 32 And he said to them, “Go and[f] tell that fox, ‘Behold, I am expelling demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.’[g] 33 Nevertheless, it is necessary for me to be on the way today and tomorrow and on the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem.

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together the way[h] a hen gathers[i] her own brood under her[j] wings, and you were not willing! 35 Behold, your house has been left to you! And I tell you, you will never see me until the time[k] will come when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”[l]

A Man Suffering from Edema Healed

14 And it happened that when he came to the house of a certain one of the leaders of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat a meal,[m] they were watching him closely. And behold, a certain man was in front of him, suffering from edema. And Jesus answered and[n] said to the legal experts and Pharisees, saying, “Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. And he took hold of him[o] and[p] healed him, and sent him[q] away. And he said to them, “Who among you, if your[r] son or your ox falls into a well[s] on the day of the Sabbath, will not immediately pull him out?” And they were not able to make a reply to these things.

Psalm 79

A Lament for Jerusalem after Its Destruction

A psalm of Asaph.[a]

79 O God, the nations have entered your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple;
they have reduced Jerusalem to ruins.
They have given the bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the heavens,
the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was none to bury them.
We have become a taunt to our neighbors,
a derision and a scorn to those around us.
How long, O Yahweh? Will you be angry forever?
Will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out your anger on the nations
that do not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name,
because they[b] have devoured Jacob
and have laid waste his habitation.
Do not remember against us former iniquities;
let your mercies meet us quickly
because we are brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
and deliver us and forgive[c] our sins
for the sake of your name.
10 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let it[d] be known among the nations before our eyes,
by the avenging of the blood of your servants
that was poured out.
11 Let the groaning of the prisoner come before you.
According to the greatness of your power,[e]
spare[f] the children appointed to death.
12 And return to our neighbors sevenfold upon them[g]
their taunts with which they taunted you, O Lord.
13 Then we, your people and the flock of your pasture,
we will give thanks to you forever.
Generation after generation[h]
we will tell of your praise.

Proverbs 12:26

26 A righteous person will seek out his neighbor,
    but the way of the wicked will lead them astray.
