Isaiah 47-49

47 The destruction of Babylon, and the causes wherefore.

Come down and sit in the dust: O [a]virgin, daughter Babel, sit on the ground: there is no [b]throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called, Tender and delicate.

Take the millstones, and [c]grind meal; loose thy locks: [d]make bare the feet: uncover the leg, and pass through the floods.

Thy filthiness shall be discovered, and thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a [e]man.

[f]Our redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his Name, the holy One of Israel.

[g]Sit still, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

I was wroth with my people: I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand, thou didst show them no [h]mercy, but thou didst lay thy very heavy yoke upon the ancient.

And thou saidest, I shall be a lady forever, so that thou didst not set thy mind to these things, neither didst thou remember the latter end thereof.

Therefore now hear, thou that art given to pleasures, and dwellest careless, She saith in her heart, I am and none else: I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall know the loss of children.

But these two things shall come to thee suddenly on one day, the loss of children and widowhood; they shall come upon thee in their [i]perfection, for the multitude of thy divinations, and for the great abundance of thine enchanters.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness; thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy [j]wisdom and thy knowledge, they have caused thee to rebel, and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else.

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee, and thou shalt not know the morning thereof; destruction shall fall upon thee, which thou shalt not be able to put away: destruction shall come upon thee suddenly, or thou beware.

12 Stand now among thine enchanters, and in the multitude of thy soothsayers (with whom thou hast [k]wearied thyself from thy youth) if so be thou mayest have profit, or if so be thou mayest have strength.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels: let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and prognosticators stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble: the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver their own lives from the power of the flame: there shall be no coals [l]to warm at, nor light to sit by.

15 Thus shall they serve thee, with whom thou hast wearied thee, even thy merchants from thy youth; every one shall wander to his own [m]quarters: none shall save thee.

48 1 The hypocrisy of the Jews is reproved. 12 The Lord alone will be worshipped. 20 Of their deliverance out of Babylon.

Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are [n]called by the name of Israel, and are come out of [o]the waters of Judah: which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth nor in righteousness.

For they are called of the holy city, and stay themselves [p]upon the God of Israel, whose Name is the Lord of hosts.

I have declared the former things of old, and they went out of my mouth, and I showed [q]them: I did them suddenly and they came to pass.

Because I knew that [r]thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass,

Therefore I have declared it to thee of old: before it came to pass, I showed [s]it thee, lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my carved image, and my molten image hath commanded them.

Thou hast heard, behold all this, and will not ye [t]declare it? I have showed thee new things, even now, and hid things, which thou knewest not.

They are created now, and not of old, and even before this thou heardest them not, lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I [u]knew them.

Yet thou heardest them not, neither didst know them, neither yet was thine ear opened of old; for I knew that thou wouldest grievously transgress: therefore have I called thee a transgressor from the [v]womb.

For my Name’s sake will I defer my wrath, and for my praise, will I refrain it from thee, [w]that I cut thee not off.

10 Behold, I have fined thee, but [x]not as silver: I have [y]chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

11 For mine own sake, for mine own sake will I do it; for how should my Name [z]be polluted? [aa]surely I will not give my glory unto another.

12 Hear me, O Jacob and Israel, my called, [ab]I am, I am the first, and I am the last.

13 Surely mine hand hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call them, [ac]they stand up together.

14 All you, assemble yourselves, and hear: which among them hath declared these things? The Lord hath loved [ad]him, he will do his will in Babel, and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans.

15 I, even I have spoken it, and I have called him, I have brought him, and his way shall prosper.

16 Come near unto me: hear ye this: I have not spoken it in secret from the [ae]beginning: from the time that the thing was, I was there, and now the Lord God and his Spirit hath [af]sent me.

17 Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, the Holy one of Israel, I am the Lord thy God, which teach thee [ag]to profit, and lead thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

18 Oh, that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy prosperity been as the flood, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea.

19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the fruit of thy body like the gravel thereof: his [ah]name should not have been cut off nor destroyed before me.

20 [ai]Go ye out of Babel: flee ye from the Chaldeans with a voice of joy: tell and declare this: show it forth to the end of the earth: say ye, The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

21 And they [aj]were not thirsty: he led them through the wilderness: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: for he clave the rock and the water gushed out.

22 There is no [ak]peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.

49 1 The Lord God exhorteth all nations to believe his promises. 6 Christ is the salvation of all that believe, and will deliver them from the tyranny of their enemies.

Hear ye me, O isles, and hearken, ye people from far. The Lord hath called [al]me from [am]the womb, and made mention of my name from my mother’s belly.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharp [an]sword: under the shadow of his hand hath he [ao]hid me, and made me a chosen shaft, and hid me in his quiver,

And said unto me, Thou art my servant [ap]Israel, for I will be glorious in thee.

And I said, I have [aq]labored in vain: I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing; but my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

And now saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, that I may bring Jacob again to him (though Israel be not gathered, [ar]yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord; and my God shall be my strength.)

And he said, It is a small thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the desolations of Israel: I will also give [as]thee for a light of the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the world.

Thus saith the Lord the redeemer of Israel, and his holy One, to him that is despised in soul, to a nation that is abhorred, to a [at]servant of rulers, Kings shall see, and [au]arise, and princes shall worship, because of the Lord, that is faithful: and the holy One of Israel, which hath chosen thee.

Thus saith the Lord, [av]In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and will give [aw]thee for a covenant of the people, that thou mayest raise up the [ax]earth, and obtain the inheritance of the desolate heritages:

That thou mayest say to the [ay]prisoners, Go forth; and to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves; they shall feed in the ways, and their [az]pastures shall be in all the tops of the hills.

10 They shall not be hungry, neither shall they be thirsty, neither shall the heat smite them, nor the sun, for he that hath compassion [ba]on them, shall lead them; even to the springs of water shall he drive them.

11 And I will make all my mountains, as a way, and my paths shall be exalted.

12 Behold, these shall come from far: and lo, these from the North and from the West, and these from the land of [bb]Sinim.

13 Rejoice, O [bc]heavens; and be joyful, O earth; burst forth into praise, O mountains; for God hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

14 But Zion said, The Lord hath [bd]forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? though they should forget, yet will I not forget thee.

16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palm of mine [be]hands: thy [bf]walls are ever in my sight.

17 Thy builders make [bg]haste: thy destroyers and they that made thee waste, are departed from thee.

18 Lift up thine eyes round about and behold: all these gather themselves together and come to thee: as I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely [bh]put them all upon thee as a garment, and gird thyself with them like a bride.

19 For thy desolations, and thy waste places, and thy land destroyed, shall surely be now narrow for them that shall dwell in it, and they that dwell devour thee, shall be far away.

20 The children of thy barrenness shall say again in thine ears, The place is strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.

21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I am barren and desolate, a captive and a wanderer to and fro? and who hath nourished them? behold, I was left alone: whence are these?

22 Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the [bi]Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people, and they shall bring thy sons in their arms: and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 And Kings [bj]shall be thy nursing fathers, and Queens shall be thy nurses: they shall worship thee with their faces toward the earth, and lick up the [bk]dust of thy feet: and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

24 Shall the prey be [bl]taken from the mighty? or the just captivity delivered?

25 But thus saith the Lord, [bm]Even the captivity of the mighty shall be taken away: and the prey of the tyrant shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children,

26 And will feed them that spoil thee, with [bn]their own flesh, and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob.

1 Thessalonians 4

1 He exhorteth them 3 to holiness, 9 and brotherly love. 13 He forbiddeth them to sorrow after to manner of infidels. 15 He setteth out the history of our resurrection.

And [a]furthermore we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that ye [b]increase more and more, as ye have received of us, how ye ought to walk, and to please God.

For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

(A)[c]For this is the will of God even your [d]sanctification, and that ye should abstain from fornication,

[e]That everyone of you should know, how to possess his vessel in holiness and honor,

[f]And not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

(B)[g]That no man oppress or defraud his brother in any matter: for the Lord is avenger of all such things, as we also have told you beforetime, and testified.

(C)For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

He therefore that [h]despiseth these things, despiseth not man, but God who hath even given you his holy Spirit.

[i]But as touching brotherly love, ye need not that I write unto you: (D)for ye are taught of God to love one another.

10 Yea, and that thing verily ye do unto all the brethren, which are throughout all Macedonia: but we beseech you brethren, that ye increase more and more,

11 [j]And that ye study to be quiet, and to meddle with your own business, [k]and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.

12 That ye may behave yourselves honestly toward them that are without, and that nothing be lacking unto you.

13 [l]I would not brethren, have you ignorant [m]concerning them [n]which are asleep, that ye sorrow not even as others which have no hope.

14 [o]For if we believe that Jesus is dead, and is risen, even so them which sleep in [p]Jesus, will God [q]bring with him.

15 [r]For this say we unto you by the [s]word of the Lord, that [t]we which live, and are remaining in the coming of the Lord, shall not prevent them which sleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a [u]shout, and with the voice of the Archangel, and (E)with the trumpet of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then shall we which live and remain, be [v]caught up with them also in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore, comfort yourselves one another with these words.
