Old/New Testament
39 Hezekiah is reproved because he showed his treasures unto the ambassadors of Babylon.
1 At (A)the same time, [a]Merodach Baladan, the son of Baladan, King of Babel, sent [b]letters, and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.
2 And Hezekiah was [c]glad of them, and showed them the house of the treasures, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures; there was nothing in his house, nor in all his kingdom that Hezekiah showed them not.
3 Then came Isaiah the Prophet unto King Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they to thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, from Babel.
4 Then said he, What have [d]they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen; there is nothing among my treasures, that I have not showed them.
5 And Isaiah said to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord of hosts,
6 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be [e]carried to Babel: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord.
7 And of thy sons, that shall proceed out of thee, and which thou shalt beget, shall they take away, and they shall be [f]eunuchs in the palace of the King of Babel.
8 [g]Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, The word of the Lord is good, which thou hast spoken: and he said, Yet let there be peace, and truth in my days.
40 2 Remission of sins by Christ. 3 The coming of John Baptist. 18 The Prophet reproveth the Idolaters, and them that trust not in the Lord.
1 Comfort [h]ye, comfort ye my people, will your God say.
2 Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her [i]warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she hath received of the Lord’s hand [j]double for all her sins.
3 A [k]voice crieth in the [l]wilderness, [m]Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make straight in the desert a path for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every [n]mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be straight, and the rough places plain.
5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all [o]flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
6 A [p]voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the [q]grace thereof is as the flowers of the field.
7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the [r]Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the [s]word of our God shall stand forever.
9 ¶ O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high [t]mountain: O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength: lift it up, be not afraid: say unto the cities of Judah, Behold [u]your God.
10 Behold, the Lord God will come with power, and [v]his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall guide them with [w]young.
12 Who hath measured the waters in his [x]fist? and counted heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure? and weighed the mountains in a weight, and the hills in a balance?
13 Who hath instructed the spirit of the Lord? or was [y]his counselor, or taught him?
14 Of whom took the counsel, and who instructed him and taught him in the way of judgment? or taught him knowledge, and showed unto him the way of understanding?
15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the dust of the balance: behold, he taketh away the isles as a little dust.
16 And Lebanon is not sufficient for fire, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.
17 All nations before him are as [z]nothing, and they are counted to him, less than nothing, and vanity.
18 To whom then [aa]will ye liken God? or what similitude will ye set up unto him?
19 The workman melteth an image, or the goldsmith beateth it out in gold, or the goldsmith maketh silver plates.
20 Doth not [ab]the poor choose out a tree that will not rot, for an oblation? he seeketh also unto him a cunning workman, to prepare an image that shall not be moved.
21 Know ye nothing? have ye not heard [ac]it? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood it by the [ad]foundation of the earth?
22 He sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers, he stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out, as a tent to dwell in.
23 He bringeth the princes to nothing, and maketh the judges of the earth, as vanity,
24 As though they were not planted, as though they were not sown, as though their stock took no root in the earth: for he did even [ae]blow upon them, and they withered, and the whirlwind will take them away as stubble.
25 To whom now will ye liken me, that I should be like him, saith the Holy one?
26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, and bringeth [af]out their armies by number, and calleth them all by names: by the greatness of his power and mighty strength nothing faileth.
27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest O Israel, [ag]My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over of my God?
28 Knowest thou not? or hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord hath created the [ah]ends of the earth? he neither fainteth, nor is weary: there is no searching of his [ai]understanding.
29 But he giveth strength unto him that fainteth, and unto him that hath no strength, he increaseth power.
30 [aj]Even the young men shall faint, and be weary, and the young men shall stumble and fall.
31 But they that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their strength: they shall lift up the wings, as the eagles: they shall run, and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.
4 2 He returneth to general exhortations, 3 touching prayer and gracious speech, 7and so endeth with greetings and commendations.
1 Ye masters, do unto your servants, that which is just and equal, knowing that ye also have a master in heaven.
2 (A)[a][b]Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving,
3 (B)[c]Praying also for us, that God may open unto us the [d]door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ: wherefore I am also in bonds,
4 That I may utter it, as it becometh me to speak.
5 ¶ (C)[e]Walk [f]wisely toward them that are without, and redeem the [g]season.
6 [h]Let your speech be [i]gracious always, and powdered with [j]salt, that ye may know how to answer every man.
7 ¶ Tychicus our beloved brother and faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, shall declare unto you my whole state:
8 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose that he might know your state, and might comfort your hearts,
9 With Onesimus a faithful and a beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall show you of all things here.
10 Aristarchus my prison fellow saluteth you, and Marcus, Barnabas’s cousin (touching whom ye received commandments: If he come unto you, receive him.)
11 And Jesus which is called Justus, which are of the circumcision. These [k]only are my work-fellows unto the [l]kingdom of God, which have been unto my consolation.
12 Epaphras the servant of Christ, which is one of you, saluteth you, and always striveth for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect, and full in all the will of God.
13 For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and for them of Laodicea, and them of Hierapolis,
14 (D)Luke the beloved physician greeteth you, and Demas.
15 Salute the brethren which are of Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the Church which is in his house.
16 And when this Epistle is read of you, cause that it be read in the Church of the Laodiceans also, and that ye likewise read the Epistle written from Laodicea,
17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry, that thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfill it.
18 The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bands. Grace be with you, Amen.
