The Cupbearer and the Baker

40 After these things happened, the cupbearer[a] to the king of Egypt and the royal baker[b] offended[c] their master, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh was enraged with his two officials,[d] the cupbearer and the baker, so he imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard in the same facility where Joseph was confined. The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be their attendant, and he served them.[e]

They spent some time in custody.[f] Both of them, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream[g] the same night.[h] Each man’s dream had its own meaning.[i] When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were looking depressed.[j] So he asked Pharaoh’s officials, who were with him in custody in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”[k] They told him, “We both had dreams,[l] but there is no one to interpret them.” Joseph responded, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Tell them[m] to me.”

So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph:[n] “In my dream, there was a vine in front of me. 10 On the vine there were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Now Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, so I took the grapes, squeezed them into his[o] cup, and put the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”[p]

12 “This is its meaning,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches represent[q] three days. 13 In three more days Pharaoh will reinstate you[r] and restore you to your office. You will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you did before[s] when you were cupbearer. 14 But remember me[t] when it goes well for you, and show[u] me kindness.[v] Make mention[w] of me to Pharaoh and bring me out of this prison,[x] 15 for I really was kidnapped[y] from the land of the Hebrews and I have done nothing wrong here for which they should put me in a dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation of the first dream was favorable,[z] he said to Joseph, “I also appeared in my dream and there were three baskets of white bread[aa] on my head. 17 In the top basket there were baked goods of every kind for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them from the basket that was on my head.”

18 Joseph replied, “This is its meaning: The three baskets represent[ab] three days. 19 In three more days Pharaoh will decapitate you[ac] and impale you on a pole. Then the birds will eat your flesh from you.”

20 On the third day it was Pharaoh’s birthday, so he gave a feast for all his servants. He “lifted up”[ad] the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker in the midst of his servants. 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his former position[ae] so that he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand, 22 but the chief baker he impaled, just as Joseph had predicted.[af] 23 But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph—he forgot him.[ag]

Mark 10

Divorce

10 Then[a] Jesus[b] left that place and went to the region of Judea and[c] beyond the Jordan River.[d] Again crowds gathered to him, and again, as was his custom, he taught them. Then some Pharisees[e] came, and to test him[f] they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his[g] wife?”[h] He answered them,[i] “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.”[j] But Jesus said to them, “He wrote this commandment for you because of your hard hearts.[k] But from the beginning of creation he[l] made them male and female.[m] For this reason a man will leave his father and mother,[n] and the two will become one flesh.[o] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 In the house once again, the disciples asked him about this. 11 So[p] he told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”[q]

Jesus and Little Children

13 Now[r] people were bringing little children to him for him to touch,[s] but the disciples scolded those who brought them.[t] 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of God[u] belongs to such as these.[v] 15 I tell you the truth,[w] whoever does not receive[x] the kingdom of God like a child[y] will never[z] enter it.” 16 After he took the children in his arms, he placed his hands on them and blessed them.

The Rich Man

17 Now[aa] as Jesus[ab] was starting out on his way, someone ran up to him, fell on his knees, and said, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”[ac] 18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good?[ad] No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”[ae] 20 The man[af] said to him, “Teacher, I have wholeheartedly obeyed[ag] all these laws[ah] since my youth.”[ai] 21 As Jesus looked at him, he felt love for him and said, “You lack one thing. Go, sell whatever you have and give the money[aj] to the poor, and you will have treasure[ak] in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But at this statement, the man[al] looked sad and went away sorrowful, for he was very rich.[am]

23 Then[an] Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”[ao] 24 The disciples were astonished at these words. But again Jesus said to them,[ap] “Children, how hard it is[aq] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel[ar] to go through the eye of a needle[as] than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were even more astonished and said[at] to one another, “Then[au] who can be saved?”[av] 27 Jesus looked at them and replied, “This is impossible for mere humans,[aw] but not for God; all things are possible for God.”

28 Peter began to speak to him, “Look,[ax] we have left everything to follow you!”[ay] 29 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth,[az] there is no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the gospel 30 who will not receive in this age[ba] a hundred times as much—homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, fields, all with persecutions[bb]—and in the age to come, eternal life.[bc] 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Third Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection

32 They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem. Jesus was going ahead of them, and they were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and experts in the law.[bd] They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles. 34 They will mock him, spit on him, flog[be] him severely, and kill him. Yet[bf] after three days,[bg] he will rise again.”

The Request of James and John

35 Then[bh] James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 They said to him, “Permit one of us to sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I experience?”[bi] 39 They said to him, “We are able.”[bj] Then Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I experience, 40 but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give. It is for those for whom it has been prepared.”[bk]

41 Now[bl] when the other ten[bm] heard this,[bn] they became angry with James and John. 42 Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions use their authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you. Instead whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave[bo] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom[bp] for many.”

Healing Blind Bartimaeus

46 They came to Jericho. As Jesus[bq] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout,[br] “Jesus, Son of David,[bs] have mercy[bt] on me!” 48 Many scolded[bu] him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So[bv] they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 Then[bw] Jesus said to him,[bx] “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi,[by] let me see again.”[bz] 52 Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained[ca] his sight and followed him on the road.

Job 6

Job Replies to Eliphaz

Then Job responded:[a]

“Oh, if only[b] my grief[c] could be weighed,[d]
and my misfortune laid[e] on the scales too![f]
But because it is heavier[g] than the sand[h] of the sea,
that is why my words have been wild.[i]
For the arrows[j] of the Almighty[k] are within me;
my spirit[l] drinks their poison;[m]
God’s sudden terrors[n] are arrayed against[o] me.

Complaints Reflect Suffering

“Does the wild donkey[p] bray[q] when it is near grass?[r]
Or[s] does the ox bellow[t] over its fodder?[u]
Can food that is tasteless[v] be eaten without salt?
Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?[w]
I[x] have refused[y] to touch such things;[z]
they are like loathsome food to me.[aa]

A Cry for Death

“Oh that[ab] my request would be realized,[ac]
and that God would grant me what I long for![ad]
And that God would be willing[ae] to crush me,
that he would let loose[af] his hand
and[ag] kill me.[ah]
10 Then I would yet have my comfort,[ai]
then[aj] I would rejoice,[ak]
in spite of pitiless pain,[al]
for[am] I have not concealed the words[an] of the Holy One.[ao]
11 What is my strength, that I should wait?[ap]
And what is my end,[aq]
that I should prolong my life?
12 Is my strength like that of stones?[ar]
Or is my flesh made of bronze?
13 Is not[as] my power to help myself nothing,
and has not every resource[at] been driven from me?

Disappointing Friends

14 “To the one in despair, kindness[au] should come from his friend[av]
even if[aw] he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
15 My brothers[ax] have been as treacherous[ay] as a seasonal stream,[az]
and as the riverbeds of the intermittent streams[ba]
that flow away.[bb]
16 They[bc] are dark[bd] because of ice;
snow is piled up[be] over them.[bf]
17 When they are scorched,[bg] they dry up,
when it is hot, they vanish[bh] from their place.
18 Caravans[bi] turn aside from their routes;
they go[bj] into the wasteland[bk] and perish.[bl]
19 The caravans of Tema[bm] looked intently[bn] for these streams;[bo]
the traveling merchants[bp] of Sheba hoped for them.
20 They were distressed,[bq]
because each one had been[br] so confident;
they arrived there,[bs] but were disappointed.
21 For now[bt] you have become like these streams that are no help;[bu]
you see a terror,[bv] and are afraid.

Friends’ Fears

22 “Have I[bw] ever said,[bx] ‘Give me something,
and from your fortune[by] make gifts[bz] in my favor’?
23 Or, ‘Deliver me[ca] from the enemy’s power,[cb]
and from the hand of tyrants[cc] ransom[cd] me’?

No Sin Discovered

24 “Teach[ce] me and I, for my part,[cf] will be silent;
explain to me[cg] how I have been mistaken.[ch]
25 How painful are[ci] honest words!
But[cj] what does your reproof[ck] prove?[cl]
26 Do you intend to criticize mere words,
and treat[cm] the words of a despairing man as wind?
27 Yes, you would gamble[cn] for the fatherless,
and auction off[co] your friend.

Other Explanation

28 “Now then, be good enough to look[cp] at me;[cq]
and I will not[cr] lie to your face!
29 Relent,[cs] let there be no falsehood;[ct]
reconsider,[cu] for my righteousness is intact![cv]
30 Is there any falsehood[cw] on my lips?
Can my mouth[cx] not discern evil things?[cy]

Romans 10

10 Brothers and sisters,[a] my heart’s desire and prayer to God on behalf of my fellow Israelites[b] is for their salvation. For I can testify that they are zealous for God,[c] but their zeal is not in line with the truth.[d] For ignoring the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, with the result that there is righteousness for everyone who believes.

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is by the law: “The one who does these things will live by them.”[e] But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart,[f]Who will ascend into heaven?’”[g] (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will descend into the abyss?[h] (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart[i] (that is, the word of faith that we preach), because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord[j] and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness[k] and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation.[l] 11 For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”[m] 12 For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.[n]

14 How are they to call on one they have not believed in? And how are they to believe in one they have not heard of? And how are they to hear without someone preaching to them?[o] 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How timely[p] is the arrival[q] of those who proclaim the good news.”[r] 16 But not all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”[s] 17 Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word[t] of Christ.[u]

18 But I ask, have they[v] not heard?[w] Yes, they have:[x] Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.[y] 19 But again I ask, didn’t Israel understand?[z] First Moses says, “I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger.”[aa] 20 And Isaiah is even bold enough to say, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I became well known to those who did not ask for me.”[ab] 21 But about Israel he says, “All day long I held out my hands to this disobedient and stubborn people![ac]
