Exodus 29

Chapter 29

Consecration of the Priests. “You shall observe this rite to consecrate them as my priests: Take a bull and two rams without defect, and unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers with oil spread on them. You shall make them of fine wheat flour. Put them in one basket and bring them and offer them together with the young bull and the two rams.

“Then have Aaron and his sons approach the entrance to the meeting tent and wash them with water. Take the garments and clothe Aaron in the tunic, the robe of the ephod, the ephod, and the breastplate. Wrap the skillfully woven band of the ephod around him. Place the turban on his head and put the holy crown over the turban. Then pour the anointing oil on his head and anoint him.

“As for his sons, make them draw near and clothe them in their tunics, wrap their sashes around them, and tie their caps on them. They will participate in the priesthood by an eternal statute. This is how you shall consecrate Aaron and his sons.

10 The Offering of the Sacrifices.“Then have the young bull brought in front of the meeting tent. Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on its head. 11 Kill the bull before the Lord, at the entrance to the meeting tent. 12 Take part of its blood and with a finger put it on the horns of the altar. The rest of the blood shall be poured out at the base of the altar.

13 “Take the fat that surrounds its entrails, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys and the fat that surrounds them, and burn them as a sacrifice on the altar. 14 But the meat of the bull, its skin and its dung, you must burn outside the camp. It is a sin offering.

15 “Then take one of the rams. Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on its head. 16 Kill the ram and gather its blood and pour it around the altar. 17 Cut the ram into pieces. Wash the entrails and the legs and put them with the pieces and the head. 18 Then burn the entire ram on the altar. It is a pleasing fragrance[a] to the Lord, a burnt offering to the Lord.

19 “Take the second ram. Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on its head, 20 and you shall kill it. Take part of its blood and place it on the right ear lobe of Aaron and the right ear lobes of his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then pour out the blood around the altar. 21 Take some of the blood on the altar and some anointing oil and sprinkle Aaron and his vestments, the sons of Aaron and their vestments. Thus, he shall be consecrated with his vestments together with his sons and their vestments.

22 “Take the fat of the ram: the tail, the fat that covers the entrails, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh, for it is a ram of consecration. 23 Also take a round loaf of bread, a cake of bread mixed with oil, and an unleavened wafer from the basket of unleavened breads placed before the altar. 24 Put all of it into the hands of Aaron and the hands of his sons. They shall wave it as an offering before the Lord.[b] 25 Take everything from their hands and burn it on the altar. It shall be a pleasant fragrance to the Lord, a burnt offering to the Lord.

26 “Take the breast of the ram of Aaron’s consecration and wave it as an offering before the Lord. It shall be your portion. 27 Consecrate the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the offering and wave it. It is offered from the ram of the consecration, and it is for Aaron and his sons. 28 It is to belong to Aaron and his sons as the portion reserved to them. This shall be an eternal statute for the children of Israel. It will be the priests’ portion to be offered by the children of Israel from their peace offerings, an offering unto the Lord.

29 The Transmission of the Sacred Vestments.“The sacred vestments of Aaron shall belong to his sons after him. They shall be anointed and consecrated in them. 30 Those descendants of Aaron who succeed him in the priesthood and who enter into the meeting tent to minister in the sanctuary shall wear these vestments for seven days.

31 The Sacred Food of the Priests.“Take the ram of consecration and cook its meat in a holy place. 32 At the entrance to the meeting tent, Aaron and his sons shall eat the meat of the ram and the bread of the basket. 33 They shall eat those things with which atonement was obtained. No outsider can eat them, for they are holy things. 34 If any of the meat of consecration or the bread is left over in the morning, you shall burn whatever is left over with fire; it shall not be eaten, for it is holy. 35 Do to Aaron and to his sons what I have commanded you to do. For seven days you shall consecrate them.

36 The Consecrated Altar and the Daily Sacrifice.“For each of seven days you shall offer a young bull as a sin offering for atonement. You shall also make a sin offering for the atonement for the altar, and shall anoint it to consecrate it. 37 For seven days you shall make atonement for the altar and consecrate it. It shall thus become a most holy thing, and whatever touches the altar will become holy.[c]

38 “Now this is what you shall offer up on the altar every day and forever: two lambs, a year old. 39 You shall offer one of these lambs in the morning and the second lamb in the evening. 40 With the first lamb you shall offer a tenth of a measure of fine flour mixed with a fourth of a hin of olive oil and a fourth of a hin of wine as a libation. 41 Offer the second lamb in the evening with the same offering and libation as in the morning. It will be a pleasant fragrance to the Lord, a burnt offering to the Lord.

42 “It shall be a perpetual burnt offering throughout all your generations at the entrance to the meeting tent, in the presence of the Lord, where I will meet you to speak with you.

43 “I will meet with the children of Israel in this place that will be consecrated to my glory. 44 I will consecrate the meeting tent and the altar. I will also consecrate Aaron and his sons to be my priests. 45 I will live in the midst of the children of Israel and I will be their God. 46 They shall know that I am the Lord, their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I, the Lord, their God, might live in their midst.

John 8

Chapter 8

Jesus, Savior of Sinners

A Woman Caught in Adultery.[a] [7:53Then each of them returned home. But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he entered the temple courts, and all the people gathered around him. He sat down and began to teach them.

The scribes and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught in adultery. Forcing her to stand in their midst, they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery.[b] Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.[c] What do you have to say?”

They asked him this question as a test so that they could bring a charge against him. Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they continued to persist in their question, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”[d] Then he again bent down and wrote on the ground.

When they heard his response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She replied, “No one, sir.” “Neither do I condemn you,” Jesus said. “Go on your way, and sin no more.”]

The Light Triumphs over Darkness

12 The Light of the World.[e] Jesus addressed them once again, saying,

“I am[f] the light of the world.
The one who follows me
will never walk in darkness.
Rather, he will have the light of life.”

13 On hearing this, the Pharisees said to him, “You are testifying on your own behalf. Your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus replied,

“Even though I testify on my own behalf,
my testimony is true,
because I know where I have come from
and where I am going,
whereas you do not know
where I have come from
or where I am going.
15 You judge by the flesh,
whereas I do not judge anyone.
16 Yet even if I do judge,
my judgment is true
because it is not I alone who judge,
but it is I and the Father who sent me.
17 “In your Law it is written
that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18 I testify on my own behalf,
and the Father who sent me
also testifies on my behalf.”

19 They continued to question him, saying, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered,

“You know neither me nor my Father.
If you knew me,
you would know my Father also.”

20 He spoke these words while he was teaching at the treasury of the temple.[g] However, no one arrested him because his hour had not yet come.

21 I AM![h] Again he said to them,

“I am going away,
and you will search for me
but you will die in your sin.
Where I am going, you cannot come.”

22 Then the Jews wondered, “Is he planning to kill himself—because he was saying, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He continued,

“You belong to what is below,
whereas I belong to what is above.
You belong to this world,
but I am not of this world.
24 That is why I told you
that you would die in your sins.
For if you do not believe
that I AM,
you will die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you then?” they asked him. Jesus answered,

“Just what I have been telling you
from the beginning.
26 I have much to say about you,
and much to condemn.
But the one who sent me is true,
and what I have heard from him
I declare to the world.”

27 They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father. 28 Therefore, Jesus said,

“When you have lifted up the Son of Man,
then you will know
that I AM,
that I do nothing on my own authority
and I say nothing except what
the Father has taught me.
29 He who sent me is with me.
He has not left me alone,
for I always do what pleases him.”

30 On hearing these words, many came to believe in him.

31 Jesus and Abraham.[i] Then Jesus said to those Jews who did believe in him,

“If you remain faithful to my word,
you will truly be my disciples.
32 You will know the truth,
and the truth will set you free.”

33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be set free’?” 34 Jesus replied,

“Amen, amen, I say to you,
everyone who sins
is a slave of sin.
35 A slave does not remain in a household forever,
but a son remains in it forever.
36 Therefore, if the Son sets you free,
you then will truly be free.
37 “I know that you are descendants of Abraham,
but you seek to kill me
because my word has no place in your heart.
38 I speak of what I have seen
in my Father’s presence,
whereas you do what you have heard
from your father.”

39 The Jews said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them,

“If you were Abraham’s children,
you would be doing the works that Abraham did.
40 But now you seek to kill me,
a man who has told you the truth
that I heard from God.
This is not what Abraham did.
41 You are doing the works of your father!”

They retorted, “We are not illegitimate children. We have one father—God.” 42 Jesus said to them,

“If God were your father,
you would love me,
for I came from God;
neither did I come of my own will,
but he was the one who sent me.
43 Why do you not understand
what I am saying?
It is because you cannot bear
to hear my words.
44 “You are from your father, the devil,
and you choose to carry out your father’s desires.
He was a murderer from the beginning,
and he does not abide by the truth,
for there is no truth in him.
When he lies,
he speaks in accord with his own nature,
for he is a liar
and the father of lies.
45 But because I speak the truth
you refuse to believe me.
46 “Which of you can convict me of sin?
If I say what is true,
why do you not believe me?
47 Whoever comes from God
listens to the words of God.
The reason why you refuse to listen
is that you do not belong to God.”

48 The Jews answered, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed?” 49 Jesus said,

“I am not possessed.
I honor my Father,
but you dishonor me.
50 I do not seek my own glory.
There is one who seeks it,
and he is the judge.
51 Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever keeps my word
will never see death.”

52 The Jews retorted, “Now we are positive that you are possessed. Abraham died, and the Prophets are dead. Yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He is dead, and the Prophets are also dead. Who do you claim to be?” 54 Jesus answered,

“If I glorify myself,
that glory is of no value.
It is my Father who glorifies me,
the one about whom you say,
‘He is our God,’
55 even though you do not know him.
However, I do know him.
If I would say
that I do not know him,
I would be a liar like you.
But I do know him,
and I keep his word.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced
that he would see my day.
He saw it and was glad.”[j]

57 The Jews then said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old. How can you have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus responded,

“Amen, amen, I say to you,
before Abraham was,
I AM.”[k]

59 Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but he hid himself and left the temple.

Proverbs 5

Chapter 5

Keep Far Away from an Adulteress[a]

My son, pay close attention to my wisdom,
and listen carefully to my discernment,
so that you may always act prudently
and your lips may safeguard knowledge.
The lips of an adulteress[b] drip with honey
and her mouth is smoother than oil,
but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood[c]
and as sharp as a two-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death;[d]
her steps lead directly to the netherworld.
Far from following the path of life,
she unknowingly wanders off in different directions.
So now, my son, listen to me,
and do not stray from the advice that I offer.
Keep far away from her
and do not go anywhere near the door of her house,
lest you turn over your life to others
and your years to one without mercy,
10 lest strangers grow prosperous on your wealth[e]
and your arduous toil enrich another man’s house.
11 Then, at the end of your life, you will groan
when your flesh and your body are consumed.
12 You will say, “Why did I despise discipline
and allow my heart to spurn correction?
13 Why did I fail to heed the voice of my teachers
and refuse to listen to my instructors?
14 Now I am at the brink of utter ruin
in the midst of the public assembly.”[f]

Rejoice in the Wife of Your Youth[g]

15 Drink the water from your own cistern,
fresh water from your own well.[h]
16 Do not allow your springs[i] to overflow,
gushing forth water into the streets.
17 Let them be for you alone
and not be shared by strangers.
18 May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth:
19 a lovely deer, a graceful fawn—
let her affection fill you with delight
    and ever hold you captive.[j]
20 Why then be seduced by another man’s wife, my son,
and succumb to the embraces of an adulteress?
21 For each man’s ways are observed by the Lord,
and he examines each man’s paths.
22 The wicked man will be ensnared by his own iniquities
and held fast in the bonds of his sins.
23 He will perish for lack of discipline,
condemned by his own excessive folly.

Galatians 4

Chapter 4

Set Free by Christ. What I am saying is that as long as an heir is a minor, he is no different from a slave, even though he is the owner of it all. He remains under the supervision of guardians and trustees until the date designated by the father. This is also true of us. As long as we were children, we were enslaved to the forces of this world.

However, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order to redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

And because you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son, crying out “Abba! Father!” Therefore, you are no longer a slave but a son; and if you are a son, then through God you are also an heir.

No Return to Slavery.[a] Previously, when you did not know God, you were slaves to forces who were not really gods at all. But now that you have come to know God—or rather to be known by God—how can you turn back once again to those powerless and destitute forces? How can you consider becoming enslaved once again? 10 You even observe special days and months and seasons and years. 11 Now I am afraid for you, that I have labored among you in vain.

12 Appeal To Enter into Freedom from the Law. I beg you, brethren, to be like me, just as I have become like you. You never did me any wrong. 13 As you remember, it was because of illness[b] that I originally preached the gospel to you. 14 And though my illness was a trial to you, it did not lead to any scorn or revulsion; rather, you welcomed me as an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself.

15 What has become of your blessedness? For I can testify that, if it had been possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I now become your enemy because I have told you the truth?

17 Others are seeking to curry your favor, but they are not sincere. They are attempting to alienate you from us so that you may make them the sole object of your attention. 18 It is good to be made much of for a good purpose at all times, and not just when I am in your presence. 19 You are my children, and I am experiencing the pain of giving birth to you all over again, until Christ is formed in you. 20 I truly wish that I could be with you now and be able to alter my approach to you, because I do not know what to think about you.

21 Sarah and Hagar Foreshadow the Two Covenants.[c] And so tell me, you who are so eager to be subject to the Law: why do you not listen to the Law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 The son by the slave woman was born through the flesh. The son by the free woman was born through a promise.

24 Now this is an allegory. These women represent two covenants. One covenant is given on Mount Sinai and bears children who are born into slavery; this is Hagar. 25 Hagar stands for Sinai, a mountain in Arabia, and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, for she is in slavery together with her children. 26 However, the Jerusalem that is above is the free woman, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,

“Rejoice, you barren woman
    who never bore a child;
break forth in song and shout with joy,
you who never were in labor.
For more numerous are the children of the deserted wife
than the children of the one who has a husband.”

28 Now you, brethren, are, like Isaac, the children of the promise. 29 But just as in those days the child who was born through the flesh persecuted the child who was born through the Spirit, so is it now also. 30 However, what does Scripture say?

“Drive out the slave woman and her son!
For the son of the slave woman shall not share the inheritance
with the son of the free woman.”

31 Therefore, brethren, we are the children not of the slave woman but of the free woman.
