Job 1-5

I. The Prologue (1:1-2:13)

Job’s Good Life[a]

[b] There was a man[c] in the land of Uz[d] whose[e] name was Job.[f] And that man was blameless[g] and upright,[h] one who feared God and turned away from evil.[i] Seven[j] sons and three daughters were born to him.[k] His possessions[l] included[m] 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys; in addition he had a very great household.[n] Thus he[o] was the greatest of all the people in the east.[p]

Now his sons used to go[q] and hold[r] a feast in the house of each one in turn,[s] and they would send and invite[t] their three[u] sisters to eat and to drink with them. When[v] the days of their feasting were finished,[w] Job would send[x] for them and sanctify[y] them; he would get up early[z] in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to[aa] the number of them all. For Job thought, “Perhaps[ab] my children[ac] have sinned and cursed[ad] God in their hearts.” This was Job’s customary practice.[ae]

Satan’s Accusation of Job[af]

Now the day came when[ag] the sons of God[ah] came to present themselves before[ai] the Lord—and Satan[aj] also arrived among them. The Lord said[ak] to Satan, “Where have you come from?”[al] And Satan answered the Lord,[am] “From roving about[an] on the earth, and from walking back and forth across it.”[ao] So the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered[ap] my servant Job? There is no[aq] one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and turns away[ar] from evil.”

Then Satan answered the Lord, “Is it for nothing that Job fears God?[as] 10 Have you[at] not made a hedge[au] around him and his household and all that he has on every side? You have blessed[av] the work of his hands, and his livestock[aw] have increased[ax] in the land. 11 But[ay] extend your hand and strike[az] everything he has, and he will no doubt[ba] curse you[bb] to your face!”

12 So the Lord said to Satan, “All right then,[bc] everything he has is[bd] in your power.[be] Only do not extend your hand against the man himself!”[bf] So Satan went out[bg] from the presence of the Lord.[bh]

Job’s Integrity in Adversity[bi]

13 Now the day[bj] came when Job’s[bk] sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 and a messenger came to Job, saying, “The oxen were plowing[bl] and the donkeys were grazing beside them, 15 and the Sabeans[bm] swooped down[bn] and carried them all away, and they killed[bo] the servants with the sword![bp] And I—only I alone[bq]—escaped to tell you!”

16 While this one was still speaking,[br] another messenger arrived[bs] and said, “The fire of God[bt] has fallen from heaven[bu] and has burned up the sheep and the servants—it has consumed them! And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”

17 While this one was still speaking another messenger arrived and said, “The Chaldeans[bv] formed three bands and made a raid[bw] on the camels and carried them all away, and they killed the servants with the sword![bx] And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”

18 While this one was still speaking another messenger arrived and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and suddenly[by] a great wind[bz] swept across[ca] the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died! And I—only I alone—escaped to tell you!”

20 Then Job got up[cb] and tore his robe.[cc] He shaved his head,[cd] and then he threw himself down with his face to the ground.[ce] 21 He said, “Naked[cf] I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return there.[cg] The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.[ch] May the name of the Lord[ci] be blessed!” 22 In all this Job did not sin, nor did he charge God with moral impropriety.[cj]

Satan’s Additional Charge

Again the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also arrived among them to present himself before the Lord.[ck] And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord,[cl] “From roving about on the earth, and from walking back and forth across it.”[cm] Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a pure and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil. And he still holds firmly[cn] to his integrity,[co] so that[cp] you stirred me up to destroy him[cq] without reason.”[cr]

But[cs] Satan answered the Lord, “Skin for[ct] skin![cu] Indeed, a man will give up[cv] all that he has to save his life.[cw] But extend your hand and strike his bone and his flesh,[cx] and he will no doubt[cy] curse you to your face!”

So the Lord said to Satan, “All right,[cz] he is[da] in your power;[db] only preserve[dc] his life.”

Job’s Integrity in Suffering

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and he afflicted[dd] Job with a malignant ulcer[de] from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.[df] Job took a shard of broken pottery to scrape[dg] himself[dh] with while he was sitting[di] among the ashes.[dj]

Then[dk] his wife said to him, “Are you still holding firmly to your integrity?[dl] Curse[dm] God, and die!”[dn] 10 But he replied,[do] “You’re talking like one of the godless women[dp] would do! Should we receive[dq] what is good from God, and not also[dr] receive[ds] what is evil?”[dt] In all this Job did not sin by what he said.[du]

The Visit of Job’s Friends[dv]

11 When Job’s three friends heard about all this calamity that had happened to him, each of them came from his own country[dw]—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.[dx] They met together[dy] to come to show sympathy[dz] for him and to console[ea] him. 12 But when they gazed intently[eb] from a distance but did not recognize[ec] him, they began to weep loudly. Each of them tore his robes, and they threw dust into the air over their heads.[ed] 13 Then they sat down with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, yet no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his pain[ee] was very great.[ef]

II. Job’s Dialogue With His Friends (3:1-27:23)[eg]

Job Regrets His Birth

After this Job opened his mouth[eh] and cursed[ei] the day he was born.[ej] Job spoke up[ek] and said:

“Let the day on which[el] I was born[em] perish,
and the night that said,[en]
‘A man[eo] has been conceived!’[ep]
That day[eq]—let it be darkness;[er]
let not God on high regard[es] it,
nor let light shine[et] on it!
Let darkness and the deepest shadow[eu] claim it;[ev]
let a cloud settle on it;
let whatever blackens the day[ew] terrify it.
That night—let darkness seize[ex] it;
let it not be included[ey] among the days of the year;
let it not enter among the number of the months![ez]
Indeed,[fa] let that night be barren;[fb]
let no shout of joy[fc] penetrate[fd] it!
Let those who curse the day[fe] curse it[ff]
those who are prepared to rouse[fg] Leviathan.[fh]
Let its morning stars[fi] be darkened;
let it wait[fj] for daylight but find none,[fk]
nor let it see the first rays[fl] of dawn,
10 because it[fm] did not shut the doors[fn] of my mother’s womb on me,[fo]
nor did it hide trouble[fp] from my eyes.

Job Wishes He Had Died at Birth[fq]

11 “Why did I not[fr] die[fs] at birth,[ft]
and why did I not expire
as[fu] I came out of the womb?
12 Why did the knees welcome me,[fv]
and why were there[fw] two breasts[fx]
that I might nurse at them?[fy]
13 For now[fz] I would be lying down
and[ga] would be quiet,[gb]
I would be asleep and then at peace[gc]
14 with kings and counselors of the earth
who built for themselves places now desolate,[gd]
15 or with princes who possessed gold,[ge]
who filled their palaces[gf] with silver.
16 Or why[gg] was[gh] I not buried[gi]
like a stillborn infant,[gj]
like infants[gk] who have never seen the light?[gl]
17 There[gm] the wicked[gn] cease[go] from turmoil,[gp]
and there the weary[gq] are at rest.
18 There[gr] the prisoners[gs] relax[gt] together;[gu]
they do not hear the voice of the oppressor.[gv]
19 Small and great are[gw] there,
and the slave is free[gx] from his master.[gy]

Longing for Death[gz]

20 “Why does God[ha] give[hb] light to one who is in misery,[hc]
and life to those[hd] whose soul is bitter,
21 to[he] those who wait[hf] for death that[hg] does not come,
and search for it[hh]
more than for hidden treasures,
22 who rejoice[hi] even to jubilation,[hj]
and are exultant[hk] when[hl] they find the grave?[hm]
23 Why is light given[hn] to a man[ho]
whose way is hidden,[hp]
and whom God has hedged in?[hq]
24 For my sighing comes in place of[hr] my food,[hs]
and my groanings[ht] flow forth like water.[hu]
25 For the very thing I dreaded[hv] has happened[hw] to me,
and what I feared has come upon me.[hx]
26 I have no ease,[hy] I have no quietness;
I cannot rest;[hz] turmoil has come upon me.”[ia]

Eliphaz Begins to Speak[ib]

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:[ic]

“If someone[id] should attempt[ie] a word with you,
will you be impatient?[if]
But who can refrain from speaking?[ig]
Look,[ih] you have instructed[ii] many;
you have strengthened[ij] feeble hands.[ik]
Your words have supported[il] those
who stumbled,[im]
and you have strengthened the knees
that gave way.[in]
But now the same thing[io] comes to you,
and you are discouraged;[ip]
it strikes you,
and you are terrified.[iq]
Is not your piety[ir] your confidence,[is]
and your blameless ways your hope?[it]
Call to mind now:[iu]
Who,[iv] being innocent, ever perished?[iw]
And where were upright people[ix] ever destroyed?[iy]
Even as I have seen,[iz] those who plow[ja] iniquity[jb]
and those who sow trouble reap the same.[jc]
By the breath[jd] of God they perish,[je]
and by the blast[jf] of his anger they are consumed.
10 There is[jg] the roaring of the lion[jh]
and the growling[ji] of the young lion,
but the teeth of the young lions are broken.[jj]
11 The mighty lion[jk] perishes[jl] for lack of prey,
and the cubs of the lioness[jm] are scattered.

Ungodly Complainers Provoke God’s Wrath

12 “Now a word[jn] was stealthily brought[jo] to me,
and my ear caught[jp] a whisper[jq] of it.
13 In the troubling thoughts[jr] of the dreams[js] in the night
when a deep sleep[jt] falls on men,
14 dread[ju] gripped me and trembling,
which made all my bones shake.[jv]
15 Then a breath of air[jw] passes[jx] by my face;
it makes[jy] the hair of my flesh stand up.
16 It stands still,[jz]
but I cannot recognize[ka] its appearance;
an image is before my eyes,
and I hear a murmuring voice:[kb]
17 ‘Is[kc] a mortal man[kd] righteous[ke] before[kf] God?
Or a man pure[kg] before his Creator?[kh]
18 If[ki] God[kj] puts no trust in[kk] his servants[kl]
and attributes[km] folly[kn] to his angels,
19 how much more to those who live in houses of clay,[ko]
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed[kp] like[kq] a moth?
20 They are destroyed[kr] between morning and evening;[ks]
they perish forever[kt] without anyone regarding it.[ku]
21 Is not their excess wealth[kv] taken away from them?[kw]
They die,[kx] yet without attaining wisdom.’[ky]
“Call now![kz] Is there anyone who will answer you?[la]

To which of the holy ones[lb] will you turn?[lc]
For[ld] wrath kills the foolish person,[le]
and anger[lf] slays the silly one.
I myself[lg] have seen the fool[lh] taking root,
but suddenly I cursed his place of residence.[li]
His children are far[lj] from safety,
and they are crushed[lk] at the place where judgment is rendered,[ll]
nor is there anyone to deliver them.[lm]
The hungry[ln] eat up his harvest,[lo]
and take it even from behind the thorns,[lp]
and the thirsty[lq] pant for[lr] their wealth.[ls]
For evil does not come up from the dust,[lt]
nor does trouble spring up from the ground,
but people[lu] are born[lv] to trouble,
as surely as the sparks[lw] fly[lx] upward.[ly]

Blessings for the One Who Seeks God[lz]

“But[ma] as for me,[mb] I would seek[mc] God,[md]
and to God[me] I would set forth my case.[mf]
He does[mg] great and unsearchable[mh] things,
marvelous things without[mi] number;[mj]
10 he gives[mk] rain on the earth,[ml]
and sends[mm] water on the fields;[mn]
11 he sets[mo] the lowly[mp] on high,
that those who mourn[mq] are raised[mr] to safety.
12 He frustrates[ms] the plans[mt] of the crafty[mu]
so that[mv] their hands cannot accomplish
what they had planned.[mw]
13 He catches[mx] the wise in their own craftiness,[my]
and the counsel of the cunning[mz] is brought to a quick end.[na]
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime,[nb]
and grope about[nc] in the noontime as if it were night.[nd]
15 So he saves[ne] from the sword that comes from their mouth,[nf]
even[ng] the poor from the hand of the powerful.
16 Thus the poor have hope,
and iniquity[nh] shuts its mouth.[ni]
17 “Therefore,[nj] blessed[nk] is the man whom God corrects,[nl]

so do not despise the discipline[nm] of the Almighty.[nn]
18 For[no] he[np] wounds,[nq] but he also bandages;
he strikes, but his hands also heal.
19 He will deliver you[nr] from six calamities;
yes, in seven[ns] no evil will touch you.
20 In time of famine[nt] he will redeem you from death,
and in time of war from the power of the sword.[nu]
21 You will be protected[nv] from malicious gossip,[nw]
and will not be afraid of the destruction[nx] when it comes.
22 You will laugh at destruction and famine[ny]
and need not[nz] be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
23 For you will have a pact with the stones[oa] of the field,
and the wild animals[ob] will be at peace[oc] with you.
24 And[od] you will know[oe] that your home[of] will be secure,[og]
and when you inspect[oh] your domains,
you will not be missing[oi] anything.
25 You will also know that your children[oj] will be numerous,
and your descendants[ok] like the grass of the earth.
26 You will come to your grave in a full age,[ol]
As stacks of grain are harvested in their season.
27 Look, we have investigated this, so it is true.
Hear it,[om] and apply it for your own[on] good.”[oo]
