Galatians 3:26 - Colossians 4:18

26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.[a] 27 For all of you who[b] were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave[c] nor free, there is neither male nor female[d]—for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants,[e] heirs according to the promise.

Now I mean that the heir, as long as he is a minor,[f] is no different from a slave, though he is the owner[g] of everything. But he is under guardians[h] and managers until the date set by his[i] father. So also we, when we were minors,[j] were enslaved under the basic forces[k] of the world. But when the appropriate time[l] had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we may be adopted as sons with full rights.[m] And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who calls[n]Abba![o] Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if you are[p] a son, then you are also an heir through God.[q]

Heirs of Promise Are Not to Return to Law

Formerly when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods at all.[r] But now that you have come to know God (or rather to be known by God), how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless[s] basic forces?[t] Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again?[u] 10 You are observing religious[v] days and months and seasons and years. 11 I fear for you that my work for you may have been in vain. 12 I beg you, brothers and sisters,[w] become like me, because I have become like you. You have done me no wrong!

Personal Appeal of Paul

13 But you know it was because of a physical illness that I first proclaimed the gospel to you, 14 and though my physical condition put you to the test, you did not despise or reject me.[x] Instead, you welcomed me as though I were an angel of God,[y] as though I were Christ Jesus himself![z] 15 Where then is your sense of happiness[aa] now? For I testify about you that if it were possible, you would have pulled out your eyes and given them to me! 16 So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?[ab]

17 They court you eagerly,[ac] but for no good purpose;[ad] they want to exclude you, so that you would seek them eagerly.[ae] 18 However, it is good[af] to be sought eagerly[ag] for a good purpose[ah] at all times, and not only when I am present with you. 19 My children—I am again undergoing birth pains until Christ is formed in you![ai] 20 I wish I could be with you now and change my tone of voice,[aj] because I am perplexed about you.

An Appeal from Allegory

21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not understand the law?[ak] 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the[al] slave woman and the other by the free woman. 23 But one, the son by the slave woman, was born by natural descent,[am] while the other, the son by the free woman, was born through the promise. 24 These things may be treated as an allegory,[an] for these women represent two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar represents Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free,[ao] and she is our mother. 27 For it is written:

Rejoice, O barren woman who does not bear children;[ap]
break forth and shout, you who have no birth pains,
because the children of the desolate woman are more numerous
than those of the woman who has a husband.”[aq]

28 But you,[ar] brothers and sisters,[as] are children of the promise like Isaac. 29 But just as at that time the one born by natural descent[at] persecuted the one born according to the Spirit,[au] so it is now. 30 But what does the scripture say? “Throw out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman will not share the inheritance with the son[av] of the free woman. 31 Therefore, brothers and sisters,[aw] we are not children of the slave woman but of the free woman.

Freedom of the Believer

For freedom[ax] Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be subject again to the yoke[ay] of slavery. Listen! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you at all! And I testify again to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey[az] the whole law. You who are trying to be declared righteous[ba] by the law have been alienated[bb] from Christ; you have fallen away from grace! For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait expectantly for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision carries any weight—the only thing that matters is faith working through love.[bc]

You were running well; who prevented you from obeying[bd] the truth? This persuasion[be] does not come from the one who calls you! A little yeast makes the whole batch of dough rise![bf] 10 I am confident[bg] in the Lord that you will accept no other view.[bh] But the one who is confusing[bi] you will pay the penalty,[bj] whoever he may be. 11 Now, brothers and sisters,[bk] if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted?[bl] In that case the offense of the cross[bm] has been removed.[bn] 12 I wish those agitators[bo] would go so far as to[bp] castrate themselves![bq]

Practice Love

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters;[br] only do not use your freedom as an opportunity to indulge your flesh,[bs] but through love serve one another.[bt] 14 For the whole law can be summed up in a single commandment,[bu] namely, “You must love your neighbor as yourself.”[bv] 15 However, if you continually bite and devour one another,[bw] beware that you are not consumed[bx] by one another. 16 But I say, live[by] by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.[bz] 17 For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires[ca] that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to[cb] each other, so that you cannot do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh[cc] are obvious:[cd] sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, 20 idolatry, sorcery,[ce] hostilities,[cf] strife,[cg] jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions,[ch] factions, 21 envying,[ci] murder,[cj] drunkenness, carousing,[ck] and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!

22 But the fruit of the Spirit[cl] is love,[cm] joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,[cn] 23 gentleness, and[co] self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ[cp] have crucified the flesh[cq] with its passions[cr] and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with[cs] the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited,[ct] provoking[cu] one another, being jealous[cv] of one another.

Support One Another

Brothers and sisters,[cw] if a person[cx] is discovered in some sin,[cy] you who are spiritual[cz] restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness.[da] Pay close attention[db] to yourselves, so that you are not tempted too. Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Let each one examine[dc] his own work. Then he can take pride[dd] in himself and not compare himself with[de] someone else. For each one will carry[df] his own load.

Now the one who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with the one who teaches[dg] it. Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool.[dh] For a person[di] will reap what he sows, because the person who sows to his own flesh[dj] will reap corruption[dk] from the flesh,[dl] but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So we must not grow weary[dm] in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up.[dn] 10 So then,[do] whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.[dp]

Final Instructions and Benediction

11 See what big letters I make as I write to you with my own hand!

12 Those who want to make a good showing in external matters[dq] are trying to force you to be circumcised. They do so[dr] only to avoid being persecuted[ds] for the cross of Christ. 13 For those who are circumcised do not obey the law themselves, but they want you to be circumcised so that they can boast about your flesh.[dt] 14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which[du] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For[dv] neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for[dw] anything; the only thing that matters is a new creation![dx] 16 And all who will behave[dy] in accordance with this rule, peace and mercy be on them, and on the Israel of God.[dz]

17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.[ea]

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be[eb] with your spirit, brothers and sisters.[ec] Amen.

Salutation

From Paul,[ed] an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints [in Ephesus],[ee] the faithful[ef] in Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you[eg] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Blessed[eh] is[ei] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed[ej] us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ. For[ek] he chose us in Christ[el] before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless[em] before him[en] in love.[eo] He did this by predestining[ep] us to adoption as his[eq] legal heirs[er] through Jesus Christ, according to the pleasure[es] of his will— to the praise of the glory of his grace[et] that he has freely bestowed on us in his dearly loved Son.[eu] In him[ev] we have redemption through his blood,[ew] the forgiveness of our offenses,[ex] according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us in all wisdom and insight. He did this when he revealed[ey] to us the mystery[ez] of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth[fa] in Christ,[fb] 10 toward the administration of the fullness of the times, to head up[fc] all things in Christ—the things in heaven[fd] and the things on earth.[fe] 11 In Christ[ff] we too have been claimed as God’s own possession,[fg] since we were predestined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope[fh] on Christ,[fi] would be to the praise of his glory. 13 And when[fj] you heard the word of truth (the gospel of your salvation)—when you believed in Christ[fk]—you were marked with the seal[fl] of the promised Holy Spirit,[fm] 14 who is the down payment[fn] of our inheritance, until the redemption of God’s own possession,[fo] to the praise of his glory.

Prayer for Wisdom and Revelation

15 For this reason,[fp] because I[fq] have heard[fr] of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love[fs] for all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you when I remember you[ft] in my prayers. 17 I pray that[fu] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,[fv] will give you spiritual wisdom and revelation[fw] in your growing knowledge of him,[fx] 18 —since the eyes of your[fy] heart have been enlightened[fz]—so that you can know what is the hope of his calling,[ga] what is the wealth of his glorious[gb] inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the incomparable[gc] greatness of his power toward[gd] us who believe, as displayed in[ge] the exercise of his immense strength.[gf] 20 This power[gg] he exercised[gh] in Christ when he raised him[gi] from the dead and seated him[gj] at his right hand in the heavenly realms[gk] 21 far above every rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And God[gl] put[gm] all things under Christ’s[gn] feet,[go] and gave him to the church as head over all things.[gp] 23 Now the church is[gq] his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.[gr]

New Life Individually

And although you were[gs] dead[gt] in your offenses and sins, in which[gu] you formerly lived[gv] according to this world’s present path,[gw] according to the ruler of the domain[gx] of the air, the ruler of[gy] the spirit[gz] that is now energizing[ha] the sons of disobedience,[hb] among whom[hc] all of us[hd] also[he] formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath[hf] even as the rest…[hg]

But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in offenses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved![hh] and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages[hi] the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward[hj] us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved[hk] through faith,[hl] and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from[hm] works, so that no one can boast.[hn] 10 For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.[ho]

New Life Corporately

11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh—who are called “uncircumcision” by the so-called “circumcision” that is performed on the body[hp] by human hands— 12 that you were at that time without the Messiah,[hq] alienated from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise,[hr] having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who used to be far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.[hs] 14 For he is our peace, the one who made both groups into one[ht] and who destroyed the middle wall of partition, the hostility, 15 when he nullified[hu] in his flesh the law of commandments in decrees. He did this to create in himself one new man[hv] out of two,[hw] thus making peace, 16 and to reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by which the hostility has been killed.[hx] 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, 18 so that[hy] through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer foreigners and noncitizens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household, 20 because you have been built[hz] on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,[ia] with Christ Jesus himself as[ib] the cornerstone.[ic] 21 In him[id] the whole building,[ie] being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Paul’s Relationship to the Divine Mystery

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus[if] for the sake of you Gentiles if indeed[ig] you have heard of the stewardship[ih] of God’s grace that was given to me for you, that[ii] by revelation the mystery[ij] was made known to me, as I wrote before briefly.[ik] When reading this,[il] you will be able to[im] understand my insight into the mystery[in] of Christ (which[io] was not disclosed to people[ip] in former[iq] generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by[ir] the Spirit), namely, that through the gospel[is] the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members[it] of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus. I became a servant of this gospel[iu] according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by[iv] the exercise of his power.[iw] To me—less than the least of all the saints[ix]—this grace was given,[iy] to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ and to enlighten[iz] everyone about God’s secret plan[ja]—the mystery that has been hidden for ages[jb] in God[jc] who has created all things. 10 The purpose of this enlightenment is that[jd] through the church the multifaceted wisdom[je] of God should now be disclosed to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly realms. 11 This was according to[jf] the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and confident access[jg] to God[jh] by way of Christ’s[ji] faithfulness.[jj] 13 For this reason I ask you[jk] not to lose heart because of what I am suffering for you,[jl] which[jm] is your glory.[jn]

Prayer for Strengthened Love

14 For this reason[jo] I kneel[jp] before the Father,[jq] 15 from[jr] whom every family[js] in heaven and on earth is named. 16 I pray that[jt] according to the wealth of his glory he will grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, 17 that Christ will dwell in your hearts through faith, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love, 18 you will be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,[ju] 19 and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you will be filled up to[jv] all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who by the power that is working within us[jw] is able to do far beyond[jx] all that we ask or think, 21 to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Live in Unity

I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord,[jy] urge you to live[jz] worthily of the calling with which you have been called,[ka] with all humility and gentleness,[kb] with patience, putting up with[kc] one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he captured[kd] captives; he gave gifts to men.”[ke] Now what is the meaning of “he ascended,” except that he also descended[kf] to the lower regions,[kg] namely, the earth?[kh] 10 He, the very one[ki] who descended, is also the one who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things. 11 And he himself[kj] gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,[kk] 12 to equip[kl] the saints for the work of ministry, that is,[km] to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God—a mature person, attaining to[kn] the measure of Christ’s full stature.[ko] 14 So[kp] we are no longer to be children, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching by the trickery of people who craftily carry out their deceitful schemes.[kq] 15 But practicing the truth in love,[kr] we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. 16 From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together[ks] through every supporting ligament.[kt] As each one does its part, the body builds itself up in love.

Live in Holiness

17 So I say this, and insist[ku] in the Lord, that you no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility[kv] of their thinking.[kw] 18 They are darkened in their understanding,[kx] being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts. 19 Because they are callous, they have given themselves over to indecency for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.[ky] 20 But you did not learn about Christ like this, 21 if indeed you heard about him and were taught in him, just as the truth is in Jesus. 22 You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside[kz] the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires, 23 to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and to put on the new man who has been created in God’s image[la]—in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.[lb]

25 Therefore, having laid aside falsehood, each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor,[lc] because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin;[ld] do not let the sun go down on the cause of your anger.[le] 27 Do not give the devil an opportunity. 28 The one who steals must steal no longer; instead he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he will have something to share with the one who has need. 29 You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need,[lf] that it would give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 You must put away all bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and slanderous talk—indeed all malice.[lg] 32 Instead,[lh] be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.

Live in Love

Therefore, be[li] imitators of God as dearly loved children and live[lj] in love, just as Christ also loved us[lk] and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering[ll] to God. But[lm] among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind,[ln] or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints.[lo] Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting—all of which are out of character—but rather thanksgiving. For you can be confident of this one thing:[lp] that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

Live in the Light

Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.[lq] Therefore do not be sharers with them,[lr] for you were at one time darkness, but now you are[ls] light in the Lord. Live[lt] like children of light— for the fruit of the light[lu] consists in[lv] all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 trying to learn[lw] what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather[lx] expose them.[ly] 12 For the things they do[lz] in secret are shameful even to mention. 13 But all things being exposed by the light are made visible. 14 For everything made visible is light, and for this reason it says:[ma]

“Awake,[mb] O sleeper![mc]
Rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you!”[md]

Live Wisely

15 Therefore consider carefully how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise[me] by understanding[mf] what the Lord’s will is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, which[mg] is debauchery,[mh] but be filled by the Spirit,[mi] 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music[mj] in[mk] your hearts to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for all things[ml] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 and submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.[mm]

Exhortations to Households

22 [mn] Wives, submit[mo] to your husbands as to the Lord, 23 because the husband is the head of the wife as also Christ is the head of the church (he himself being the savior of the body). 24 But as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your[mp] wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her 26 to sanctify her by cleansing her[mq] with the washing of the water by the word, 27 so that he[mr] may present the church to himself as glorious—not having a stain or wrinkle, or any such blemish, but holy and blameless.[ms] 28 In the same way[mt] husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one has ever hated his own body,[mu] but he feeds it and takes care of it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.[mv] 31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become[mw] one flesh.[mx] 32 This mystery is great—but I am actually[my] speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless,[mz] each one of you must also love his own wife as he loves himself,[na] and the wife must[nb] respect[nc] her husband.

Children,[nd] obey your parents in the Lord,[ne] for this is right. Honor your father and mother,[nf] which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely, that it will go[ng] well with you and that you will live[nh] a long time on the earth.”[ni]

Fathers,[nj] do not provoke your children to anger,[nk] but raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Slaves,[nl] obey your human masters[nm] with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ, not like those who do their work only when someone is watching[nn]—as people-pleasers—but as slaves of Christ doing the will of God from the heart.[no] Obey[np] with enthusiasm, as though serving the Lord[nq] and not people, because you know that each person, whether slave or free, if he does something good, this[nr] will be rewarded by the Lord.

Masters,[ns] treat your slaves[nt] the same way,[nu] giving up the use of threats,[nv] because you know that both you and they have the same master in heaven,[nw] and there is no favoritism with him.

Exhortations for Spiritual Warfare

10 Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11 Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand against the schemes[nx] of the devil. 12 For our struggle[ny] is not against flesh and blood,[nz] but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness,[oa] against the spiritual forces[ob] of evil in the heavens.[oc] 13 For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground[od] on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm therefore, by fastening[oe] the belt of truth around your waist,[of] by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 by fitting your[og] feet with the preparation that comes from the good news[oh] of peace,[oi] 16 and in all of this,[oj] by taking up the shield[ok] of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation[ol] and the sword[om] of the Spirit (which is the word of God). 18 With every prayer and petition, pray[on] at all times in the Spirit, and to this end[oo] be alert, with all perseverance and petitions for all the saints. 19 Pray[op] for me also, that I may be given the right words when I begin to speak[oq]—that I may confidently make known[or] the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may be able to speak boldly as I ought to speak.

Farewell Comments

21 Tychicus, my[os] dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make everything known to you, so that you too may know about my circumstances,[ot] how I am doing. 22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our circumstances[ou] and that he may encourage your hearts.

23 Peace to the brothers and sisters,[ov] and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be[ow] with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.[ox]

Salutation

From Paul[oy] and Timothy, slaves[oz] of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers[pa] and deacons. Grace and peace to you[pb] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Prayer for the Church

I thank my God every time I remember you.[pc] I always pray with joy in my every prayer for all of you because of your participation[pd] in the gospel from the first day until now.[pe] For I am sure of this very thing,[pf] that the one[pg] who began a good work in[ph] you will perfect it[pi] until the day of Christ Jesus. For[pj] it is right for me to think this about all of you, because I have you in my heart,[pk] since both in my imprisonment[pl] and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel all of you became partners in God’s grace[pm] together with me. For God is my witness that I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight 10 so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.

Ministry as a Prisoner

12 I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[pn] that my situation has actually turned out to advance the gospel:[po] 13 The[pp] whole imperial guard[pq] and everyone else knows[pr] that I am in prison[ps] for the sake of Christ, 14 and most of the brothers and sisters,[pt] having confidence in the Lord[pu] because of my imprisonment, now more than ever[pv] dare to speak the word[pw] fearlessly.

15 Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. 16 The latter do so from love because they know that I am placed here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, because they think they can cause trouble for me in my imprisonment.[px] 18 What is the result? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed, and in this I rejoice.

Yes,[py] and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance[pz] through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. 20 My confident hope[qa] is that I will in no way be ashamed[qb] but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die.[qc] 21 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. 22 Now if I am to go on living in the body,[qd] this will mean productive work[qe] for me, yet I don’t know which I prefer:[qf] 23 I feel torn between the two,[qg] because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far, 24 but it is more vital for your sake that I remain[qh] in the body.[qi] 25 And since I am sure of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for the sake of your progress[qj] and joy in the faith,[qk] 26 so that what you can be proud of may increase[ql] because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you.[qm]

27 Only conduct yourselves[qn] in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ so that—whether I come and see you or whether I remain absent—I should hear that[qo] you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, by contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,[qp] 28 and by not being intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is[qq] a sign of their[qr] destruction, but of your salvation—a sign which[qs] is from God. 29 For it has been granted to you[qt] not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are encountering[qu] the same conflict that you saw me face and now hear that I am facing.[qv]

Christian Unity and Christ’s Humility

Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort provided by love, any fellowship in the Spirit,[qw] any affection or mercy,[qx] complete my joy and be of the same mind,[qy] by having the same love, being united in spirit,[qz] and having one purpose. Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition[ra] or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself. Each of you should be concerned[rb] not only[rc] about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well.[rd] You should have the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had,[re]

[rf] who though he existed in the form of God[rg]
did not regard equality with God
as something to be grasped,
but emptied himself
by taking on the form of a slave,[rh]
by looking like other men,[ri]
and by sharing in human nature.[rj]
He humbled himself,
by becoming obedient to the point of death
—even death on a cross!
As a result God highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow
—in heaven and on earth and under the earth—
11 and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord
to the glory of God the Father.

Lights in the World

12 So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence,[rk] 13 for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort—for the sake of his good pleasure—is God. 14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without blemish though you live in a crooked and perverse society, in which you shine as lights in the world[rl] 16 by holding on to[rm] the word of life so that on the day of Christ I will have a reason to boast that I did not run in vain nor labor in vain. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice together with all of you. 18 And in the same way you also should be glad and rejoice together with me.

Models for Ministry

19 Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be encouraged by hearing news about you. 20 For there is no one here like him who will readily demonstrate his deep concern for you.[rn] 21 Others are busy with their own concerns, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know his qualifications, that like a son working with his father, he served with me in advancing the gospel. 23 So I hope to send him as soon as I know more about my situation, 24 though I am confident in the Lord that I too will be coming to see you[ro] soon.

25 But for now[rp] I have considered it necessary to send Epaphroditus to you. For he is my brother,[rq] coworker and fellow soldier, and your messenger[rr] and minister[rs] to me in my need.[rt] 26 Indeed, he greatly missed all of you and was distressed because you heard that he had been ill. 27 In fact he became so ill that he nearly died.[ru] But God showed mercy to him—and not to him only, but also to me—so that I would not have grief on top of grief. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him,[rv] so that when you see him again you can rejoice[rw] and I can be free from anxiety. 29 So welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, 30 since it was because of the work of Christ that he almost died. He risked his life so that he could make up for your inability to serve me.[rx]

True and False Righteousness

Finally, my brothers and sisters,[ry] rejoice in the Lord! To write this again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.

Beware of the dogs,[rz] beware of the evil workers, beware of those who mutilate the flesh![sa] For we are the circumcision,[sb] the ones who worship by the Spirit of God,[sc] exult in Christ Jesus, and do not rely on human credentials[sd] —though mine too are significant.[se] If someone thinks he has good reasons to put confidence in human credentials,[sf] I have more: I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. I lived according to the law as a Pharisee.[sg] In my zeal for God I persecuted the church. According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless. But these assets I have come to regard as liabilities because of Christ. More than that, I now regard all things as liabilities compared to the far greater value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things—indeed, I regard them as dung![sh]—that I may gain Christ, and be found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ’s faithfulness[si]—a righteousness from God that is in fact[sj] based on Christ’s[sk] faithfulness.[sl] 10 My aim is to know him,[sm] to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings,[sn] and to be like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow,[so] to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Keep Going Forward

12 Not that I have already attained this—that is, I have not already been perfected—but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me.[sp] 13 Brothers and sisters,[sq] I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded:[sr] Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, 14 with this goal in mind,[ss] I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God[st] in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let those of us who are “perfect” embrace this point of view.[su] If you think otherwise, God will reveal to you the error of your ways.[sv] 16 Nevertheless, let us live up to the standard[sw] that we have already attained.[sx]

17 Be imitators of me,[sy] brothers and sisters,[sz] and watch carefully those who are living this way, just as you have us as an example. 18 For many live, about whom I have often told you, and now, with tears, I tell you that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, they exult in their shame, and they think about earthly things.[ta] 20 But our citizenship is in heaven—and we also eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform these humble bodies of ours[tb] into the likeness of his glorious body by means of that power by which he is able to subject all things to himself.

Christian Practices

So then, my brothers and sisters,[tc] dear friends whom I long to see, my joy and crown, stand in the Lord in this way, my dear friends!

I appeal to Euodia and to Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I say also to you, true companion,[td] help them. They have struggled together in the gospel ministry[te] along with me and Clement and my other coworkers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice! Let everyone see your gentleness.[tf] The Lord is near! Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds[tg] in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters,[th] whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things. And what you learned and received and heard and saw in me, do these things. And the God of peace will be with you.

Appreciation for Support

10 I have great joy in the Lord because now at last you have again expressed your concern for me. (Now I know you were concerned before but had no opportunity to do anything.)[ti] 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in any circumstance. 12 I have experienced times of need and times of abundance. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment,[tj] whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing. 13 I am able to do all things[tk] through the one[tl] who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless, you did well to share with me in my trouble.

15 And as you Philippians know, at the beginning of my gospel ministry, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in this matter of giving and receiving except you alone. 16 For even in Thessalonica on more than one occasion[tm] you sent something for my need. 17 I do not say this because I am seeking a gift.[tn] Rather, I seek the credit that abounds to your account. 18 For I have received everything, and I have plenty. I have all I need because I received from Epaphroditus what you sent—a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, very pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply your every need according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 20 May glory be given to God our Father forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

21 Give greetings to all the saints in Christ Jesus. The brothers[to] with me here send greetings. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.[tp]

Salutation

From Paul,[tq] an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the saints, the faithful[tr] brothers and sisters[ts] in Christ, at Colossae. Grace and peace to you[tt] from God our Father![tu]

Paul’s Thanksgiving and Prayer for the Church

We always[tv] give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since[tw] we heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the saints. Your faith and love have arisen[tx] from the hope laid up[ty] for you in heaven, which you have heard about in the message of truth, the gospel[tz] that has come to you. Just as in the entire world this gospel[ua] is bearing fruit and growing, so it has also been bearing fruit and growing[ub] among you from the first day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth. You learned the gospel[uc] from Epaphras, our dear fellow slave[ud]—a[ue] faithful minister of Christ on our[uf] behalf— who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

Paul’s Prayer for the Growth of the Church

For this reason we also, from the day we heard about you,[ug] have not ceased praying for you and asking God[uh] to fill[ui] you with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you may live[uj] worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects[uk]—bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of[ul] all patience and steadfastness, joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share[um] in the saints’[un] inheritance in the light. 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves,[uo] 14 in whom we have redemption,[up] the forgiveness of sins.

The Supremacy of Christ

15 [uq] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn[ur] over all creation,[us]
16 for all things in heaven and on earth were created in him—all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions,[ut] whether principalities or powers—all things were created through him and for him.
17 He himself is before all things and all things are held together[uu] in him.
18 He is the head of the body, the church, as well as the beginning, the firstborn[uv] from the dead, so that he himself may become first in all things.[uw]
19 For God[ux] was pleased to have all his[uy] fullness dwell[uz] in the Son[va]
20 and through him to reconcile all things to himself by making peace through the blood of his cross—through him,[vb] whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Paul’s Goal in Ministry

21 And you were at one time strangers and enemies in your[vc] minds[vd] as expressed through[ve] your evil deeds, 22 but now he has reconciled you[vf] by his physical body through death to present you holy, without blemish, and blameless before him— 23 if indeed you remain in the faith, established and firm,[vg] without shifting[vh] from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has also been preached in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become its servant.

24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my physical body—for the sake of his body, the church—what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ. 25 I became a servant of the church according to the stewardship[vi] from God—given to me for you—in order to complete[vj] the word of God, 26 that is, the mystery that has been kept hidden from ages and generations, but has now been revealed to his saints. 27 God wanted to make known to them the glorious[vk] riches of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 We proclaim him by instructing[vl] and teaching[vm] all people[vn] with all wisdom so that we may present every person mature[vo] in Christ. 29 Toward this goal[vp] I also labor, struggling according to his power that powerfully[vq] works in me.

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you,[vr] and for those in Laodicea, and for those who have not met me face to face.[vs] My goal is that[vt] their hearts, having been knit together[vu] in love, may be encouraged, and that[vv] they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ,[vw] in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this so that no one will deceive you through arguments[vx] that sound reasonable.[vy] For though[vz] I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, rejoicing to see[wa] your morale[wb] and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

Warnings Against the Adoption of False Philosophies

Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,[wc] continue to live your lives[wd] in him, rooted[we] and built up in him and firm[wf] in your[wg] faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you[wh] through an empty, deceitful philosophy[wi] that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits[wj] of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him all the fullness of deity lives[wk] in bodily form, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. 11 In him you also were circumcised—not, however,[wl] with a circumcision performed by human hands, but by the removal[wm] of the fleshly body,[wn] that is,[wo] through the circumcision done by Christ. 12 Having been buried with him in baptism, you also have been raised with him through your[wp] faith in the power[wq] of God who raised him from the dead. 13 And even though you were dead in your[wr] transgressions and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he nevertheless[ws] made you alive with him, having forgiven all your transgressions. 14 He has destroyed[wt] what was against us, a certificate of indebtedness[wu] expressed in decrees opposed to us. He has taken it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 Disarming[wv] the rulers and authorities, he has made a public disgrace of them, triumphing over them by the cross.[ww]

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you with respect to food or drink, or in the matter of a feast, new moon, or Sabbath days— 17 these are only[wx] the shadow of the things to come, but the reality[wy] is Christ![wz] 18 Let no one who delights in false humility[xa] and the worship of angels pass judgment on you. That person goes on at great lengths[xb] about what he has supposedly seen, but he is puffed up with empty notions by his fleshly mind.[xc] 19 He has not held fast[xd] to the head from whom the whole body, supported[xe] and knit together through its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God.[xf]

20 If you have died with Christ to the elemental spirits[xg] of the world, why do you submit to them as though you lived in the world? 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!” 22 These are all destined to perish with use, founded as they are[xh] on human commands and teachings.[xi] 23 Even though they have the appearance of wisdom[xj] with their self-imposed worship and humility achieved by an[xk] unsparing treatment of the body—a wisdom with no true value—they in reality result in fleshly indulgence.[xl]

Exhortations to Seek the Things Above

Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ (who is your[xm] life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him. So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth:[xn] sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion,[xo] evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.[xp] You also lived your lives[xq] in this way at one time, when you used to live among them. But now, put off all such things[xr] as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practices 10 and have been clothed with the new man[xs] that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it. 11 Here there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave[xt] or free, but Christ is all and in all.

Exhortation to Unity and Love

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy,[xu] kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving[xv] one another, if someone happens to have[xw] a complaint against anyone else. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also forgive others.[xx] 14 And to all these[xy] virtues[xz] add[ya] love, which is the perfect bond.[yb] 15 Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body[yc] to this peace), and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ[yd] dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace[ye] in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Exhortation to Households

18 Wives, submit to your[yf] husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the Lord. 21 Fathers,[yg] do not provoke[yh] your children, so they will not become disheartened. 22 Slaves,[yi] obey your earthly[yj] masters in every respect, not only when they are watching—like those who are strictly people-pleasers—but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you are doing,[yk] work at it with enthusiasm,[yl] as to the Lord and not for people,[ym] 24 because you know that you will receive your[yn] inheritance[yo] from the Lord as the reward. Serve[yp] the Lord Christ. 25 For the one who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong,[yq] and there are no exceptions.[yr] Masters, treat your slaves with justice and fairness, because you know that you also have a master in heaven.

Exhortation to Pray for the Success of Paul’s Mission

Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time pray[ys] for us too, that[yt] God may open a door for the message[yu] so that we may proclaim[yv] the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.[yw] Pray that I may make it known as I should.[yx] Conduct yourselves[yy] with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunities. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer everyone.

Personal Greetings and Instructions

Tychicus, a dear brother, faithful minister, and fellow slave[yz] in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me.[za] I sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are doing[zb] and that he may encourage your hearts. I sent him[zc] with Onesimus, the faithful and dear brother, who is one of you.[zd] They will tell[ze] you about everything here.

10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, sends you greetings, as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions; if he comes to you, welcome him). 11 And Jesus who is called Justus also sends greetings. In terms of Jewish converts,[zf] these are the only fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a slave[zg] of Christ,[zh] greets you. He is always struggling in prayer on your behalf, so that you may stand mature and fully assured[zi] in all the will of God. 13 For I can testify that he has worked hard[zj] for you and for those in Laodicea and Hierapolis. 14 Our dear friend Luke the physician and Demas[zk] greet you. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers and sisters[zl] who are in Laodicea and to Nympha and the church that meets in her[zm] house.[zn] 16 And after[zo] you have read this letter, have it read[zp] to the church of Laodicea. In turn, read the letter from Laodicea[zq] as well. 17 And tell Archippus, “See to it that you complete the ministry you received in the Lord.”

18 I, Paul, write this greeting by my own hand.[zr] Remember my chains.[zs] Grace be with you.[zt]
