The Prologue to the Letter

This is what we proclaim to you:[a] what was from the beginning,[b] what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and our hands have touched (concerning the word of life— and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce[c] to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us).[d] What we have seen and heard we announce[e] to you too, so that[f] you may have fellowship[g] with us (and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ). Thus[h] we are writing these things so that[i] our[j] joy may be complete.[k]

God Is Light, So We Must Walk in the Light

Now[l] this is the gospel[m] message[n] we have heard from him[o] and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.[p] If we say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking[q] in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing[r] the truth. But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses[s] us from all sin.[t] If we say we do not bear the guilt of sin,[u] we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous,[v] forgiving[w] us our sins and cleansing[x] us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us. (My little children,[y] I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.[z]) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate[aa] with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One,[ab] and he himself is the atoning sacrifice[ac] for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world.[ad]

Keeping God’s Commandments

Now[ae] by this we know that we have come to know God:[af] if we keep his commandments. The one who says “I have come to know God”[ag] and yet does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in such a person. But whoever obeys his[ah] word, truly in this person[ai] the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in him. The one who says he resides[aj] in God[ak] ought himself to walk[al] just as Jesus[am] walked.

Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning.[an] The old commandment is the word that you have already[ao] heard. On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you which is true in him[ap] and in you, because[aq] the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.[ar] The one who says he is in the light but still hates[as] his fellow Christian[at] is still in the darkness. 10 The one who loves his fellow Christian[au] resides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.[av] 11 But the one who hates his fellow Christian[aw] is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.[ax]

Words of Reassurance

12 I am writing to you,[ay] little children, that[az] your sins have been forgiven because of his[ba] name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, that[bb] you have known him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young people, that[bc] you have conquered the evil one.[bd] 14 I have written to you, children, that[be] you have known the Father.[bf] I have written to you, fathers, that[bg] you have known him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young people, that[bh] you are strong, and the word of God resides in you, and you have conquered the evil one.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, 16 because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions)[bi] is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains[bj] forever.

Warning About False Teachers

18 Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists[bk] have appeared. We know from this that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us, because if they had belonged to us, they would have remained[bl] with us. But[bm] they went out from us[bn] to demonstrate[bo] that all of them do not belong to us.[bp]

20 Nevertheless you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.[bq] 21 I have not written to you that[br] you do not know the truth, but that[bs] you do know it, and that[bt] no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ[bu] ? This one is the antichrist: the person who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father either. The person who confesses the Son has the Father also.[bv]

24 As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain[bw] in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 Now this[bx] is the promise that he[by] himself made to[bz] us: eternal life.[ca] 26 These things I have written to you about those who are trying to deceive you.[cb]

27 Now as for you, the anointing[cc] that you received from him[cd] resides[ce] in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as his[cf] anointing teaches you about all things, it is true and is not a lie. Just as[cg] it[ch] has taught you, you reside[ci] in him.

Children of God

28 And now, little children, remain[cj] in him,[ck] so that when[cl] he appears we may have confidence and not shrink away from him in shame when he comes back.[cm] 29 If you know that he is righteous, you also know[cn] that everyone who practices righteousness has been fathered[co] by him.

(See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that[cp] we should be called God’s children—and indeed[cq] we are![cr] For this reason[cs] the world does not know us: because it did not know him.[ct] Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be[cu] has not yet been revealed. We[cv] know that[cw] whenever[cx] it[cy] is revealed[cz] we will be like him, because[da] we will see him just as he is.[db] And everyone who has this hope focused[dc] on him purifies[dd] himself, just as Jesus[de] is pure).[df]

Everyone who practices sin[dg] also practices lawlessness;[dh] indeed,[di] sin is lawlessness. And you know that Jesus[dj] was revealed to take away[dk] sins, and in him there is no sin. Everyone who resides[dl] in him does not sin;[dm] everyone who sins has neither seen him nor known him. Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness[dn] is righteous, just as Jesus[do] is righteous. The one who practices sin is of the devil,[dp] because the devil has been sinning[dq] from the beginning. For this purpose[dr] the Son of God was revealed: to destroy[ds] the works of the devil. Everyone who has been fathered[dt] by God does not practice sin,[du] because[dv] God’s[dw] seed[dx] resides in him, and thus[dy] he is not able to sin, because he has been fathered by God. 10 By this[dz] the children of God and the children of the devil are revealed: Everyone who does not practice righteousness—the one who does not love his fellow Christian[ea]—is not of God.

God Is Love, So We Must Love One Another

11 For[eb] this is the gospel[ec] message[ed] that you have heard from the beginning: that we should love one another,[ee] 12 not like Cain[ef] who was of the evil one and brutally[eg] murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.

13 Therefore do not be surprised, brothers and sisters,[eh] if the world hates you.[ei] 14 We know that[ej] we have crossed over[ek] from death to life[el] because[em] we love our fellow Christians.[en] The one who does not love remains in death.[eo] 15 Everyone who hates his fellow Christian[ep] is a murderer,[eq] and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing[er] in him. 16 We have come to know love by this:[es] that Jesus[et] laid down[eu] his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians. 17 But whoever has the world’s possessions[ev] and sees his fellow Christian[ew] in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God[ex] reside[ey] in such a person?[ez]

18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.[fa] 19 And by this[fb] we will know that we are of the truth and will convince[fc] our conscience[fd] in his presence,[fe] 20 that[ff] if our conscience condemns[fg] us, that[fh] God is greater than our conscience and knows all things. 21 Dear friends, if our conscience does not condemn us, we have confidence in the presence of God, 22 and[fi] whatever we ask we receive from him, because[fj] we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing to him. 23 Now[fk] this is his commandment:[fl] that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he gave[fm] us the commandment. 24 And the person who keeps his commandments resides[fn] in God,[fo] and God[fp] in him. Now by this[fq] we know that God[fr] resides in us: by the Spirit he has given us.

Testing the Spirits

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit,[fs] but test[ft] the spirits[fu] to determine[fv] if they are from God, because many false prophets[fw] have gone out into the world. By this[fx] you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses[fy] Jesus as the Christ[fz] who has come in the flesh is from God, but[ga] every spirit that refuses to confess[gb] Jesus,[gc] that spirit[gd] is not from God, and this is the spirit[ge] of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now is already in the world.

You are from God, little children, and have conquered them,[gf] because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world’s perspective and the world listens to them. We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but[gg] whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this[gh] we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.[gi]

God is Love

Dear friends, let us love one another, because[gj] love is from God, and everyone who loves[gk] has been fathered[gl] by God and knows God. The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love.[gm] By this[gn] the love of God[go] is revealed in us:[gp] that God has sent his one and only[gq] Son into the world so that we may live through him. 10 In this[gr] is love: not that[gs] we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice[gt] for our sins.

11 Dear friends, if God so loved us, then[gu] we also ought to love one another.[gv] 12 No one has seen God at any time.[gw] If we love one another, God resides[gx] in us, and his love is perfected in us.[gy] 13 By this[gz] we know that we reside in God[ha] and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit.[hb] 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior[hc] of the world.

15 If anyone[hd] confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides[he] in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe[hf] the love that God has in us.[hg] God is love, and the one who resides[hh] in love resides in God, and God resides in him. 17 By this[hi] love is perfected with[hj] us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus[hk] is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.[hl] The[hm] one who fears punishment[hn] has not been perfected in love. 19 We love[ho] because he loved us first.

20 If anyone says[hp] “I love God” and yet[hq] hates his fellow Christian,[hr] he is a liar, because the one who does not love his fellow Christian[hs] whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.[ht] 21 And the commandment we have from him is this: that[hu] the one who loves God should love his fellow Christian[hv] too. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ[hw] has been fathered[hx] by God, and everyone who loves the father[hy] loves the child fathered by him.[hz] By this[ia] we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and obey his commandments. For[ib] this is the love of God:[ic] that we keep his commandments.[id] And his commandments do not weigh us down, because[ie] everyone[if] who has been fathered by God[ig] conquers[ih] the world.[ii]

Testimony About the Son

This[ij] is the conquering power[ik] that has conquered[il] the world: our faith. Now who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that[im] Jesus is the Son of God? Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood—not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because[in] the Spirit is the truth. For[io] there are three that testify,[ip] the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement.

If we accept the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, because[iq] this[ir] is the testimony of God that[is] he has testified concerning his Son. 10 (The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning his Son.)[it] 11 And this is the testimony: God[iu] has given us eternal life,[iv] and this life is in his Son. 12 The one who has the Son[iw] has this[ix] eternal[iy] life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this[iz] eternal[ja] life.

Assurance of Eternal Life

13 I have written these things[jb] to you who believe[jc] in the name of the Son of God so that[jd] you may know that you have eternal life.

14 And this is the confidence that we have before him: that[je] whenever[jf] we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know[jg] that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from him. 16 If[jh] anyone sees his fellow Christian[ji] committing a sin not resulting in death,[jj] he should ask, and God[jk] will grant[jl] life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death.[jm] There is a sin[jn] resulting in death.[jo] I do not say that he should ask about that. 17 All unrighteousness[jp] is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.[jq]

18 We know that everyone fathered[jr] by God does not sin, but God[js] protects[jt] the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we are from God,[ju] and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know[jv] him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This one[jw] is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.[jx]
