Psalm 120-127

Psalm 120[a]

A song of ascents.[b]

120 In my distress I cried out
to the Lord and he answered me.
I said,[c] “O Lord, rescue me[d]
from those who lie with their lips[e]
and those who deceive with their tongues.[f]
How will he severely punish you,
you deceptive talker?[g]
Here’s how![h] With the sharp arrows of warriors,
with arrowheads forged over the hot coals.[i]
How miserable I am.[j]
For I have lived temporarily[k] in Meshech;
I have resided among the tents of Kedar.[l]
For too long I have had to reside
with those who hate[m] peace.
I am committed to peace,[n]
but when I speak, they want to make war.[o]

Psalm 121[p]

A song of ascents.[q]

121 I look up[r] toward the hills.
From where[s] does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,[t]
the Creator[u] of heaven and earth.
May he not allow your foot to slip.
May your Protector[v] not sleep.[w]
Look! Israel’s Protector[x]
does not sleep or slumber.
The Lord is your protector;
the Lord is the shade at your right hand.
The sun will not harm you by day,
or the moon by night.[y]
The Lord will protect you from all harm;
he will protect your life.
The Lord will protect you in all you do,[z]
now and forevermore.

Psalm 122[aa]

A song of ascents;[ab] by David.

122 I was glad because[ac] they said to me,
“We will go to the Lord’s temple.”
Our feet are[ad] standing
inside your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is a city designed
to accommodate an assembly.[ae]
The tribes go up[af] there,[ag]
the tribes of the Lord,
where it is required that Israel
give thanks to the name of the Lord.[ah]
Indeed,[ai] the leaders sit[aj] there on thrones and make legal decisions,
on the thrones of the house of David.[ak]
Pray[al] for the peace of Jerusalem.
May those who love her prosper.[am]
May there be peace inside your defenses,
and prosperity[an] inside your fortresses.[ao]
For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors
I will say, “May there be peace in you.”
For the sake of the temple of the Lord our God
I will pray for you to prosper.[ap]

Psalm 123[aq]

A song of ascents.[ar]

123 I look up[as] toward you,
the one enthroned[at] in heaven.
Look, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female servant look to the hand of her mistress,[au]
so our eyes will look to the Lord, our God, until he shows us favor.
Show us favor, O Lord, show us favor!
For we have had our fill of humiliation, and then some.[av]
We have had our fill[aw]
of the taunts of the self-assured,
of the contempt of the proud.

Psalm 124[ax]

A song of ascents;[ay] by David.

124 “If the Lord had not been on our side”—
let Israel say this.—
if the Lord had not been on our side,
when men attacked us,[az]
they would have swallowed us alive,
when their anger raged against us.
The water would have overpowered us;
the current[ba] would have overwhelmed[bb] us.[bc]
The raging water
would have overwhelmed us.[bd]
The Lord deserves praise,[be]
for[bf] he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth.
We escaped with our lives,[bg] like a bird from a hunter’s snare.
The snare broke, and we escaped.
Our deliverer is the Lord,[bh]
the Creator[bi] of heaven and earth.

Psalm 125[bj]

A song of ascents.[bk]

125 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved and will endure forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
now and forevermore.
Indeed,[bl] the scepter of a wicked king[bm] will not settle[bn]
upon the allotted land of the godly.
Otherwise the godly
might do what is wrong.[bo]
Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
to the morally upright.[bp]
As for those who are bent on traveling a sinful path,[bq]
may the Lord remove them,[br] along with those who behave wickedly.[bs]
May Israel experience peace.[bt]

Psalm 126[bu]

A song of ascents.[bv]

126 When the Lord restored the well-being of Zion,[bw]
we thought we were dreaming.[bx]
At that time we laughed loudly
and shouted for joy.[by]
At that time the nations said,[bz]
“The Lord has accomplished great things for these people.”
The Lord did indeed accomplish great things for us.
We were happy.
O Lord, restore our well-being,
just as the streams in the arid south are replenished.[ca]
Those who shed tears as they plant
will shout for joy when they reap the harvest.[cb]
The one who weeps as he walks along, carrying his bag[cc] of seed,
will certainly come in with a shout of joy, carrying his sheaves of grain.[cd]

Psalm 127[ce]

A song of ascents;[cf] by Solomon.

127 If the Lord does not build a house,[cg]
then those who build it work in vain.
If the Lord does not guard a city,[ch]
then the watchman stands guard in vain.
It is vain for you to rise early, come home late,
and work so hard for your food.[ci]
Yes,[cj] he provides for those whom he loves even when they sleep.[ck]
Yes,[cl] sons[cm] are a gift from the Lord;
the fruit of the womb is a reward.
Sons born during one’s youth
are like arrows in a warrior’s hand.[cn]
How blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.
They will not be put to shame[co] when they confront[cp] enemies at the city gate.

Nahum 1:1-13

Introduction

This is an oracle[a] about Nineveh; the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:[b]

God Takes Vengeance against His Enemies

The Lord is a zealous[c] and avenging[d] God;
the Lord is avenging and very angry.[e]
The Lord takes vengeance[f] against his foes;
he sustains his rage[g] against his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger[h] but great in power;[i]
the Lord will certainly not[j] allow the wicked[k] to go unpunished.

The Divine Warrior Destroys His Enemies but Protects His People

He marches out[l] in the whirlwind and the raging storm;
dark storm clouds billow like dust under his feet.[m]
He shouts a battle cry[n] against the sea[o] and makes it dry up;[p]
he makes all the rivers[q] run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither;[r]
the blossom of Lebanon withers.
The mountains tremble before him,[s]
the hills convulse;[t]
the earth is laid waste[u] before him,
the world and all its inhabitants[v] are laid waste.[w]
No one can withstand[x] his indignation![y]
No one can resist[z] his fierce anger![aa]
His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire,
boulders are broken up[ab] as he approaches.[ac]
The Lord is good[ad]
indeed,[ae] he is a fortress[af] in time of distress,[ag]
and he protects[ah] those who seek refuge[ai] in him.
But with an overwhelming flood[aj]
he will make a complete end of Nineveh;[ak]
he will drive[al] his enemies into darkness.

Denunciation and Destruction of Nineveh

Whatever[am] you plot[an] against the Lord, he will completely destroy![ao]
Distress[ap] will not arise[aq] a second time.
10 Surely they will be totally consumed[ar]
like[as] entangled thorn bushes,[at]
like the drink of drunkards,[au]
like very[av] dry stubble.
11 From you, O Nineveh,[aw] one has marched forth who plots evil against the Lord,
a wicked military strategist.[ax]

Oracle of Deliverance to Judah

12 This is what the Lord says:[ay]

“Even though[az] they are powerful[ba]
and what is more,[bb] even though their army is numerous[bc]
nevertheless,[bd] they will be destroyed[be] and trickle away![bf]
Although I afflicted you,
I will afflict you no more.[bg]
13 And now,[bh] I will break Assyria’s[bi] yoke bar[bj] from your neck;[bk]
I will tear apart the shackles[bl] that are on you.”[bm]

1 Peter 1:13-25

13 Therefore, get your minds ready for action[a] by being fully sober, and set your hope[b] completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.[c] 14 Like obedient children, do not comply with[d] the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance,[e] 15 but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct, 16 for it is written, “You shall be holy, because I am holy.”[f] 17 And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one’s work, live out the time of your temporary residence here[g] in reverence. 18 You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed—not by perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ. 20 He was foreknown[h] before the foundation of the world but[i] was manifested in these last times[j] for your sake. 21 Through him you now trust[k] in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 You have purified[l] your souls by obeying the truth[m] in order to show sincere mutual love.[n] So[o] love one another earnestly from a pure heart.[p] 23 You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For

all flesh[q] is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of the grass;[r]
the grass withers and the flower falls off,
25 but the word of the Lord[s] endures forever.[t]

And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.

Matthew 19:13-22

Jesus and Little Children

13 Then little children were brought to him for him to lay his hands on them and pray.[a] But the disciples scolded those who brought them.[b] 14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”[c] 15 And he placed his hands on them and went on his way.[d]

The Rich Young Man

16 Now[e] someone came up to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?”[f] 17 He said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he asked. Jesus replied, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,[g] and love your neighbor as yourself.”[h] 20 The young man said to him, “I have wholeheartedly obeyed[i] all these laws.[j] What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money[k] to the poor, and you will have treasure[l] in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich.[m]
