Job 5-7

1, 2 Eliphaz showeth the difference between the children of God and the wicked. 3 The fall of the wicked. 9 God’s power who destroyeth the wicked, and delivereth his.

Call now, if any will [a]answer thee, and to which of the Saints wilt thou turn?

Doubtless [b]anger killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the idiot.

I have seen the [c]foolish well rooted, and suddenly I [d]cursed his habitation, saying,

His [e]children shall be far from salvation, and they shall be destroyed in the [f]gate, and none shall deliver them.

The hungry shall eat up his harvest: yea, they shall take it from among the [g]thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.

For misery cometh not forth of the dust, [h]neither doeth affliction spring out of the earth.

But man is born unto [i]travail, as the sparks fly upward.

But I would inquire at [j]God, and turn my talk unto God:

Which [k]doeth great things, and unsearchable, and marvelous things without number.

10 He [l]giveth rain upon the earth, and poureth water upon the streets,

11 And setteth up on high them that be low, that the sorrowful may be exalted to salvation.

12 He scattereth the devices of the crafty: so that their hands cannot accomplish that which they do enterprise.

13 (A)He taketh the wise in their craftiness, and the counsel of the wicked is made foolish.

14 They meet with [m]darkness in the daytime, and [n]grope at noonday, as in the night.

15 But he saveth the [o]poor from the sword, from their [p]mouth, and from the hand of the violent man,

16 So that the poor hath his hope, but iniquity shall [q]stop her mouth.

17 Behold, blessed is the man whom God correcteth: therefore refuse not thou the chastising of the Almighty.

18 For he maketh the wound, and bindeth it up: he smiteth, and his hands make whole.

19 He shall deliver thee in [r]six troubles, and in the seventh the evil shall not touch thee.

20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in battle from the power of the sword.

21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue, and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

22 But thou shalt [s]laugh at destruction and dearth, and shalt not be afraid of the beast of the earth.

23 For the stones of the field [t]shall be in league with thee, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

24 And thou shalt know, that peace shall be in thy tabernacle, and thou shalt visit thine habitation, and shalt not [u]sin.

25 Thou shalt perceive also that thy seed shall be great, and thy posterity as the grass of the earth.

26 Thou shalt go to thy grave in [v]a full age, as a rick of corn cometh in due season into the barn.

27 Lo, [w]thus have we inquired of it, and so it is: hear this and know it for thyself.

1 Job answereth, that his pain is more grievous than his fault. 8 He wisheth death. 14 He complaineth of his friends.

But Job answered and said,

Oh that my grief were well weighed, and my miseries were laid together in the [x]balance!

For it would be now heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are [y]swallowed up.

For the arrows of the Almighty are in me, the venom whereof doth drink up my spirit, and the terrors of God [z]fight against me.

Doth the [aa]wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox when he hath fodder?

That which is [ab]unsavory, shall it be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

Such things as my soul refused to touch, as were sorrows, are my meat.

Oh that I might have my [ac]desire, and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

That is, that God would destroy me: that he would let his hand go, and cut me off.

10 Then should I yet have comfort, (though I burn with sorrow, let him not spare) [ad]because I have not denied the words of the Holy one.

11 What power have I that I should endure? or what is mine [ae]end, if I should prolong my life?

12 Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?

13 Is it not so, that there is in me no [af]help? and that [ag]strength is taken from me?

14 He that is in misery, ought to be comforted of his neighbor: but men have forsaken the fear of the Almighty.

15 My brethren have deceived me as a [ah]brook, and as the rising of the rivers they pass away.

16 Which are blackish with ice, and wherein the snow is hid.

17 But in time they are dried up with heat and are consumed: and when it is hot they fail out of their places,

18 Or they depart from their way and course, yea, they vanish and perish.

19 They that go to Tema, [ai]considered them, and they that go to Sheba, waited for them.

20 But they were confounded: when they hoped, they came thither, and were ashamed.

21 Surely now are ye like [aj]unto it: ye have seen my fearful plague, and are afraid.

22 Was it because I said, Bring unto me? or give a reward to me of your [ak]substance?

23 And deliver me from the enemy’s hand, or ransom me out of the hand of tyrants?

24 Teach me, and I will [al]hold my tongue: and cause me to understand, wherein I have erred.

25 How [am]steadfast are the words of righteousness? and what can any of you justly reprove?

26 Do ye imagine to reprove [an]words, that the talk of the afflicted should be as the wind?

27 Ye make your wrath to fall upon the fatherless, and dig a pit for your friend.

28 Now therefore be content to [ao]look upon me: for I will not lie before your face.

29 Turn, I pray you, let there be none iniquity: return, I say, and ye shall see yet my righteousness in that behalf. Is there iniquity in my tongue? doth not my mouth feel sorrows?

1 Job showeth the shortness and misery of man’s life.

Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? and are not his days as the days of an [ap]hireling?

As a servant longeth for the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the end of his work,

So have I had as an inheritance the [aq]months of vanity, and painful nights have been appointed unto me.

If I laid me down, I said, When shall I arise? and measuring the evening, I am even full with tossing to and fro unto the dawning of the day.

My flesh is [ar]clothed with worms and filthiness of the dust: my skin is rent, and become horrible.

My days are swifter than [as]a weaver’s shuttle, and they are spent without hope.

Remember that my life is but a wind, and that mine eye shall not return to see pleasure.

The eye that hath seen me, shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I shall be no longer.

[at]As the cloud vanisheth and goeth away, so he that goeth down to the grave, shall [au]come up no more.

10 He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him anymore.

11 Therefore I will not [av]spare my mouth, but will speak in the trouble of my spirit, and muse in the bitterness of my mind.

12 Am I a sea [aw]or a whalefish, that thou keepest me in ward?

13 When I say, My couch shall relieve me, and my bed shall bring comfort in my meditation,

14 Then fearest thou me [ax]with dreams, and astonishest me with visions.

15 Therefore my soul [ay]chooseth rather to be strangled and to die, than to be in my bones.

16 I abhor it: I shall not live always: [az]spare me then, for my days are but vanity.

17 What is man, that thou [ba]dost magnify him, and that thou settest thine heart upon him?

18 And dost visit him every morning, and triest him every moment?

19 How long will it be ere thou depart from me? thou wilt not let me alone while I may swallow my spittle.

20 I have [bb]sinned, what shall I do unto thee? O thou preserver of men, why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden unto myself?

21 And why dost thou not pardon my trespass? and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust, and if thou seek me in the morning, I shall [bc]not be found.

Acts 8:1-25

2 The godly make lamentation for Stephen. 3 Saul maketh havoc of the Church.  5 Philip preacheth Christ at Samaria. 9 Simon Magus,  13 his covetousness reproved. 26 Philip 27 cometh to the Ethiopian Eunuch, 38 and baptizeth him.

And [a]Saul consented to his death. And at that time, there was a great persecution against the Church which was at Jerusalem, and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and of Samaria, except the Apostles.

[b]Then certain men fearing God, [c]carried Stephen among them, to be buried, and made great lamentation for him.

[d]But Saul made havoc of the Church, and entered into every house, and drew out both men and women, and put them into prison.

Therefore they that were scattered abroad, went to and fro preaching the word.

[e]Then came Philip into the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

And the people gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, with one accord, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

For unclean spirits crying with a loud voice, came out of many that were possessed of them: and many taken with palsies, and that halted, were healed.

And there was great joy in that city.

[f]And there was before in the city, a certain man called Simon, which used [g]witchcraft, and [h]bewitched the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was some great man,

10 To whom they gave heed from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that great power of God.

11 And they gave heed unto him, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

12 But as soon as they believed Philip, which preached the things that concerned the kingdom of God, and the Name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized both men and women.

13 [i]Then Simon himself believed also, and was baptized, and continued with Philip, and wondered, when he saw the signs and great miracles which were done.

14 [j]Now when the Apostles, which were at Jerusalem, heard say, that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John.

15 Which when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the [k]holy Ghost.

16 (For as yet he was fallen down on none of them, but they were baptized only in the Name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the holy Ghost.

18 [l]And when Simon saw that through laying on of the Apostles’ hands the holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay the hands, he may receive the holy Ghost.

20 [m]Then said Peter unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou thinkest that the gift of God may be obtained with money.

21 Thou hast neither part nor fellowship in this [n]business: for thine heart is not [o]right in the sight of God.

22 [p]Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, that if it be possible, the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

23 For I see that thou art in the [q]gall of bitterness, and in the [r]bond of iniquity.

24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken, come upon me.

25 ¶ So they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the Gospel in many towns of the Samaritans.
