Joshua 5:1-6:5

1 The Canaanites are afraid of the Israelites. 2 Circumcision is commanded the second time. 10 The passover is kept. 12 Manna ceaseth. 13 The Angel appeareth unto Joshua.

Now when all the Kings of the [a]Amorites, which were beyond Jordan Westward, and all the Kings of the Canaanites which were by the Sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan before the children of Israel until they were gone over, their hearts fainted: and there was no courage in them anymore because of the children of Israel.

¶ That same time the Lord said unto Joshua, (A)Make thee sharp knives, [b]and return, and circumcise the sons of Israel the second time.

Then Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the sons of Israel in [c]the hill of the foreskins.

And this is the cause why Joshua circumcised all the people, even the males that came out of Egypt, because all the men of war were dead in the wilderness by the way after they came out of Egypt.

For all the people that came out, were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way after they came out of Egypt, were [d]not circumcised.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people of the men of war that came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not show them the land, (B)which the Lord had sworn unto their fathers, that he would give us, even a land that floweth with milk and honey.

So their sons whom he raised up in their stead, Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they circumcised them not by the way.

And when they had made an end of circumcising all the people, they abode in the places in the camp till they [e]were whole.

After, the Lord said unto Joshua, This day I have taken away the [f]shame of Egypt from you: wherefore he called the name of that place, Gilgal, unto this day.

10 ¶ So the children of Israel abode in Gilgal, and kept the feast of the Passover the fourteenth day of the month at even, in the plain of Jericho.

11 And they did eat of the corn of the land, on the morrow after the Passover, unleavened bread, and parched corn in the same day.

12 And the Manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the corn of the land, neither had the children of Israel Manna anymore, but did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13 ¶ And when Joshua was by Jericho, he lift up his eyes and looked: and behold, there stood a (C)man against him, having a sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou on our side, or on our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay, but as a captain of the host of the Lord am I now come: then Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and [g]did worship, and said unto him, What saith the Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, (D)Loose thy shoe of thy foot: for the place whereon thou standest, is holy: and Joshua did so.

2 The Lord instructeth Joshua what he should do as touching Jericho. 6 Joshua commandeth the Priests and warriors what to do. 20 The walls fall. 22 Rahab is saved. 24 All is burnt save gold and metal. 26 The curse of him that buildeth the city.

Now Jericho was [h]shut up, and [i]closed, [j]because of the children of Israel, none might go out nor enter in.

And the Lord said unto Joshua, Behold, I have given into thine hand Jericho and the king thereof, and the strong men of war.

All ye therefore that be men of war, shall compass the city, in going round about the city [k]once: thus shall you do six days:

And seven Priests shall bear seven trumpets of [l]rams’ horns before the Ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the Priests shall blow with the trumpets,

And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout: then shall the wall of the city fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up, every man straight before him.

Psalm 132-134

132 1 The faithful grounding on God’s promise made unto David, desire that he would establish the same, both as touching his posterity, and the building of the Temple, to pray there as was forspoken, Deut. 12:5.

A song of degrees.

Lord, remember David with all his [a]affliction,

Who sware unto the Lord, and vowed unto the mighty God, of Jacob, saying,

I [b]will not enter into the Tabernacle of mine house, nor come upon my pallet or bed,

Nor suffer mine eyes to sleep, nor mine eyelids to slumber,

Until I find out a place for the [c]Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

Lo, we heard of it in [d]Ephrathah, and found it in the fields of the forest.

We will enter into his Tabernacles, and worship before his footstool.

Arise, O Lord, to come into thy [e]rest, thou, and the Ark of thy strength.

Let thy Priests be clothed with [f]righteousness, and let thy Saints rejoice.

10 For thy [g]servant David’s sake refuse not the face of thine Anointed.

11 The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David, and he will not shrink from it, saying, Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

12 If thy sons keep my Covenant, and my testimonies, that I shall teach them, their sons also shall sit upon thy throne [h]forever.

13 For the Lord hath chosen Zion, and loved to dwell in it, saying,

14 This is my rest forever: here will I dwell, for I have a [i]delight therein.

15 I will surely bless her vittles, and will satisfy her poor with bread,

16 And will clothe her Priests with [j]salvation, and her Saints shall shout for joy.

17 There will I make the [k]horn of David to bud: for I have ordained a light for mine Anointed.

18 His enemies will I clothe with shame, but on him his crown shall flourish.

133 1 This Psalm containeth the commendation of brotherly amity among the servants of God.

A song of degrees, or Psalm of David.

Behold, how good and how comely a thing it is, brethren to dwell even [l]together.

It is like to the precious [m]ointment upon the head, that runneth down upon the beard, even unto Aaron’s beard, which went down on the border of his garments,

And as the dew of [n]Hermon which falleth upon the mountains of Zion: for [o]there the Lord appointed the blessing and life forever.

134 1 He exhorteth the Levites watching in the Temple, to praise the Lord.

A song of degrees.

Behold, praise ye the Lord, all ye [p]servants of the Lord, ye that by night stand in the house of the Lord.

Lift up your [q]hands to the Sanctuary, and praise the Lord.

The Lord that [r]hath made heaven and earth, bless thee out of Zion.

Isaiah 65

65 1 The vocation of the Gentiles, and the rejection of the Jews. 13 The joy of the elect, and the punishment of the wicked.

I have been sought of them that [a]asked not: I was found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that called not upon my Name.

I have [b]spread out mine hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walked in a way that was not good, even after their own [c]imaginations.

A people that provoked me ever unto my face: that sacrificeth in [d]gardens, and burneth incense upon [e]bricks.

Which remain among the [f]graves, and lodge in the deserts, which eat [g]swine’s flesh, and the broth of things polluted are in their vessels.

Which say, [h]Stand apart, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou; these are a smoke in my wrath, and a fire that [i]burneth all the day.

Behold, it is [j]written before me; I will not keep silence, but will render it and recompense it into their bosom.

Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers, shall be [k]together (saith the Lord) which have burnt incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills; therefore will I measure their old work into their bosom.

Thus saith the Lord, As the wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not, for a [l]blessing is in it, so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them whole.

But I will bring a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah that shall inherit my mountain; and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.

10 And [m]Sharon shall be a sheepfold, and the valley of Achor shall be a resting place for the cattle of my people, that have sought me.

11 But ye are they that have forsaken the Lord, and forgotten mine holy Mountain, and have prepared a table for the [n]multitude, and furnish the drink offerings unto the number.

12 Therefore will I [o]number you to the sword, and all you shall bow down to the slaughter, because I called, and ye did not answer; I [p]spake, and ye heard not, but did evil in my sight, and did choose that thing which I would not.

13 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall [q]eat, and ye shall be hungry; behold, my servants shall drink, and ye shall be thirsty; behold, my servants shall rejoice, and ye shall be ashamed.

14 Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, and ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of mind.

15 And ye shall leave your name as a curse unto my [r]chosen; for the Lord God shall slay you, and call his servants by [s]another name.

16 He that shall bless in the [t]earth, shall bless himself in the true God; and he that sweareth in the earth, shall swear by the true God; for the former [u]troubles are forgotten, and shall surely hide themselves from mine eyes.

17 For lo, I will create [v]new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind.

18 But be you glad and rejoice forever in the things that I shall create; for behold, I will create Jerusalem, as a rejoicing, and her people as a joy.

19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people, and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.

20 There shall be no more there a child of years, nor an old man that hath [w]not filled his days: for he that shall be an hundred years old, shall die as a young man: but the sinner being [x]an hundred years old shall be accursed.

21 And they shall [y]build houses, and inhabit them, and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

22 They shall not build, and another inhabit: they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of the tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall enjoy in old age the work of their hands.

23 They shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth in fear: for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their buds with them.

24 Yea, before they call, I will answer, and whiles they speak, I will hear.

25 The [z]wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and to the serpent dust shall be his meat. They shall no more hurt nor destroy in all mine holy Mountain, saith the Lord.

Matthew 13

13 1 The parable of the Sower. 11 and 34 Why Jesus spake in parables. 18 The exposition of the parable. 24 The parable of the tares. 31 Of the mustard seed. 33 Of the leaven. 44 Of the hidden treasure. 45 Of the pearl. 47 Of the draw net cast into the sea. 53 Christ is not received of his countrymen the Nazarites.

The (A)same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

[a]And great multitudes resorted unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat down: and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

Then he spake many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow.

And as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up.

And some fell upon stony ground, where they had not much earth, and anon they sprung up, because they had no depth of earth.

And when the sun was up, they were parched, and for lack of rooting withered away.

And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprung up, and choked them.

And some again fell in good ground, and brought forth fruit, one corn an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and another thirtyfold.

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

10 ¶ Then the disciples came, and said to him, Why speakest thou to them in parables?

11 [b]And he answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

12 (B)For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

13 Therefore speak I to them in parables, because they seeing, do not see: and hearing, they hear not, neither understand.

14 So in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which prophecy saith, (C)By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive.

15 For this people’s heart is waxed fat, and their ears are dull of hearing, and with their eyes they have winked, lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their hearts, and should return, that I might heal them.

16 [c]But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

17 (D)For verily I say unto you, that many Prophets, and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them, and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

18 (E)Hear ye therefore the parable of the Sower.

19 Whensoever any man heareth the word of that kingdom, and understandeth it not, that evil one cometh, and catcheth away that which was sown in his [d]heart: and this is he which hath received the seed by the way side.

20 And he that received seed in the stony ground, is he which heareth the word, and incontinently with joy receiveth it,

21 Yet hath he no root in himself, and endureth but a season: for as soon as tribulation or persecution cometh because of the word, by and by he is offended.

22 And he that received the seed among thorns, is he that heareth the word: but the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he is made unfruitful.

23 But he that received the seed in the good ground, is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it, which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold.

24 [e]Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man which sowed good seed in his field.

25 But while men slept, there came his enemy and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

26 And when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

27 Then came the servants of the householder, and said unto him, Master, sowest thou not good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28 And he said unto them, Some envious man hath done this. Then the servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29 But he said, Nay, lest while ye go about to gather the tares, ye pluck up also with them the wheat.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and in time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye first the tares, and bind them in sheaves to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

31 (F)[f]Another parable he put forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man taketh and soweth in his field:

32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and it is a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and build in the branches thereof.

33 (G)Another parable spake he to them, The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman taketh and hideth in three pecks of meal, till all be leavened.

34 (H)All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables, and without parables spake he not unto them,

35 That it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the Prophet, saying, (I)I will open my mouth in parables, and will utter the things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

36 Then sent Jesus the multitude away, and went into the house. And his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of that field.

37 [g]Then answered he, and said to them, He that soweth the good seed, is the son of man,

38 And the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom, and the tares are the children of that wicked one.

39 And the enemy that soweth them, is the devil, (J)and the harvest is the end of the world, and the reapers be the Angels.

40 As then the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the end of this world.

41 The Son of man shall send forth his Angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity,

42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire. There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 (K)Then shall the just men shine as the sun in the kingdom of their father. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

44 [h]Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hid in the field, which when a man hath found, he hideth it, and for joy thereof departeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant man that seeketh good pearls,

46 Who having found a pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

47 [i]Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a draw net cast into the sea, that gathereth of all kinds of things.

48 Which, when it is full, men draw to land, and sit and gather the good into vessels, and cast the bad away.

49 So shall it be at the end of the world. The Angels shall go forth, and sever the bad from among the just,

50 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

51 [j]Jesus said unto them, Understand ye all these things? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every Scribe which is taught unto the kingdom of heaven, is like unto an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things both new and old.

53 ¶ And it came to pass, that when Jesus had ended these parables, he departed thence,

54 (L)[k]And came into his own country, and taught them in their Synagogue, so that they were astonied, and said, Whence cometh this wisdom and great works unto this man?

55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, (M)and his brethren James and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

56 And are not his sisters all with us? Whence then hath he all these things?

57 And they were offended with him. Then Jesus said to them, (N)A Prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house.

58 And he did not many great works there, for their unbelief’s sake.
