Numbers 2

Chapter 2[a]

Placement of the Tribal Camps. The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “Every Israelite will camp by their own standard, alongside the emblems of their father’s household. They will camp some distance from the tent of meeting.

“On the east side, toward the rising of the sun, will be the standard of the camp of Judah arranged by their companies. The leader of the tribe of Judah is Nahshon, the son of Amminadab. His forces numbered seventy-four thousand, six hundred. The tribe of Issachar will camp next to him. The leader of the tribe of Issachar is Nethanel, the son of Zuar. His forces numbered fifty-four thousand, four hundred. Then there is the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the tribe of Zebulun is Eliab, the son of Helon. His forces numbered fifty-seven thousand, four hundred. The whole camp of Judah, by their companies, numbered one hundred eighty-six thousand, four hundred. They are to set out first on the march.

10 “On the south side of the camp is the standard of the camp of Reuben, arranged by their companies. The leader of the tribe of Reuben is Elizur, the son of Shedeur. 11 His forces numbered forty-six thousand, five hundred. 12 The tribe of Simeon will camp next to him. The leader of the tribe of Simeon is Shelumiel, the son of Zurushaddai. 13 His forces numbered fifty-nine thousand, three hundred. 14 Then there is the tribe of Gad. The leader of the tribe of Gad is Eliasaph, the son of Reuel. 15 His forces numbered forty-five thousand, six hundred fifty. 16 The whole camp of Reuben, by their companies, numbered one hundred fifty-one thousand, four hundred fifty. They are to be the second to set out on the march.

17 “Then the tent of meeting will set out, with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the other camps whenever they set up camp. This is how they are to set out, each man located under his own standards.

18 “On the west side of the camp is the standard of the camp of Ephraim, arranged by their companies. The leader of the tribe of Ephraim is Elishama, the son of Ammihud. 19 His forces numbered forty thousand, five hundred. 20 The tribe of Manasseh will camp next to him. The leader of the tribe of Manasseh is Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur. 21 His forces numbered thirty-two thousand, two hundred. 22 Then comes the tribe of Benjamin. The leader of the tribe of Benjamin is Abidan, the son of Gideoni. 23 His forces numbered thirty-five thousand, five hundred. 24 The whole camp of Ephraim, by their companies, numbered one hundred eight thousand, one hundred. They are to be the third to set out on the march.

25 “On the north side of the camp is the standard of the camp of Dan, arranged by their companies. The leader of the tribe of Dan is Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai. 26 His forces numbered sixty-two thousand, seven hundred. 27 The tribe of Asher will camp next to him. The leader of the tribe of Asher is Pagiel, the son of Ochran. 28 His forces numbered forty-one thousand, five hundred. 29 Then comes the tribe of Naphtali. The leader of the tribe of Naphtali is Ahira, the son of Enan. 30 His forces numbered fifty-three thousand, four hundred. 31 The whole camp of Dan, by their companies, numbered one hundred fifty-seven thousand, six hundred. They are to march last with their standards.”

32 These were the people of Israel who were counted. There were six hundred three thousand, five hundred and fifty counted in their camps, in their companies, 33 but the Levites were not counted along with the people of Israel, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 34 The people of Israel did everything as the Lord had commanded Moses[b] by encamping under their standards and by the way they set out, each going with his clan and his family.

Psalm 36

Psalm 36[a]

Human Weakness and Divine Goodness

For the director.[b] Of David the servant of the Lord.

Sin speaks to the wicked man in his heart;[c]
    in his eyes there is no fear of God.
He deludes himself with the idea
    that his guilt will not be discovered and hated.[d]
The words his mouth utters are malicious and deceitful;
    he has ceased to be wise and act uprightly.
Even when he lies on his bed,[e]
    he is hatching evil plots.
He commits himself to a wicked course
    and refuses to reject evil.
[f]Lord, your kindness extends to the heavens;
    your faithfulness, to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    your judgments, like the mighty deep;
    you sustain both humans and beasts, O Lord.
How precious, O God, is your kindness![g]
    People seek refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,[h]
    and you give them to drink from your delightful streams.
10 For with you is the fountain of life,[i]
    and by your light we see light.
11 Continue to bestow your kindness[j] on those who know you,
    and your saving justice on the upright of heart.
12 Let not the foot of the arrogant tread upon me,
    nor the hand of the wicked drive me out.
13 Behold, the evildoers have fallen;
    they are overthrown and unable to rise.

Ecclesiastes 12

Chapter 12

Remember Your Creator . . .

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth
    before the bad times come
and the years draw near when you will say,
    “I take no pleasure in them”;
before the sun and the light of day
    give way to darkness,
before the moon and the stars grow dim
    and the clouds return after the rain;
[a]when the guardians of the house tremble
    and the strong men are bent over,
and the women who grind the meal
    cease working because they are few in number,
and those who look through the windows
    realize that their eyesight is failing;
when the doors to the street are shut
    and the sound of grinding begins to fade,
when one waits to hear the chirping of a bird,
    but all the songbirds are silent;
when one is afraid of heights
    and is concerned about dangers on the streets.

And You Return to Your Eternal Home

Remember him—when the almond tree blossoms
    and the grasshopper is sluggish
    and desire is no longer stirred,
and you return to your eternal home
    while the mourners assemble in the streets.
Remember him—before the silver cord is snapped
    or the golden bowl is broken
or the pitcher is shattered at the spring
    or the wheel is broken at the well
and the dust returns to the earth from which it came
    and the spirit returns to God[b] who gave it.

Final Editor’s Note

Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth;
    all things are vanity.

In addition to his wisdom, Qoheleth taught the people knowledge, having weighed, studied, and arranged many proverbs. 10 Qoheleth sought to express his thoughts in a pleasing way and to convey truths with precision.

11 The sayings of the wise are as sharp as goads; like spikes firmly positioned are the lessons offered by a single shepherd. 12 In regard to anything beyond these, my child, beware. There is no end to the writing of many books, and extensive study results in a weariness of the flesh.

13 This is the end of my teaching.
    All has been heard.
Fear God[c] and keep his commandments,
    for that is the responsibility of everyone.
14 For God will bring to judgment all of our deeds[d]
    and reveal all of our secrets,
    whether good or bad.

Philemon

Salutation.[a] Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy[b] our brother, to Philemon, our beloved friend and fellow worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus[c] our fellow soldier, and to the Church that meets in your house: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving and Prayer.[d] I always give thanks to my God when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of the love and faith that you have for the Lord Jesus and for all the saints.[e] I pray that the sharing of your faith may become even more effective so that you may come to perceive all the blessings we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and encouragement because the hearts[f] of the saints have been refreshed by you, my brother.

Plea for Onesimus.[g] Therefore, although I am confident that in Christ I have the right to command you to do your duty, I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love. I, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus, 10 am appealing to you on behalf of my child,[h] Onesimus, whom I have fathered during my imprisonment.

11 He was formerly useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. 12 Therefore, I am sending him back to you, that is, I am sending my very own heart.[i] 13 I wanted to keep him with me so that he might be of service to me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel, 14 but I did not want to do anything without your knowledge, so that your good deed might be voluntary and not compelled.

15 Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever,[j] 16 no longer as a slave, but as more than a slave: as a brother. He is beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, both as a man[k] and in the Lord.

17 [l]Therefore, if you consider me to be a friend, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18 If he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about the fact that you owe me your very self. 20 Yes, my brother, grant me some benefit[m] in the Lord. Set my heart at rest in Christ.

21 Conclusion.[n] I have written to you confident of your acceptance, and in fact I am certain that you will do even more than I ask. 22 At the same time, please prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping through your prayers to be restored to you.

23 Epaphras,[o] my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings, 24 and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke,[p] my fellow workers.

25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.[q]
