The Construction and Furnishing of the Sanctuary[a]

Chapter 35

Sabbath Regulations. Moses assembled the whole community of the children of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do: For six days you shall work, but the seventh shall be a holy day for you, a day of absolute rest, sacred to the Lord. Whoever works on that day shall be put to death. You shall light no fires on the Sabbath in all of your dwellings.”

Materials for the Tabernacle. Moses told the whole community of the children of Israel, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do: Take up an offering from among yourselves for the Lord. Whoever is generous, let him bring the offering to the Lord: gold, silver, and bronze, blue, purple, and scarlet material, fine twisted linen, goat hair, rams’ skins dyed red, sheep skins, acacia wood, oil for lamps, balsam for anointing, and oil for fragrant incense, onyx stones and stones for setting in the ephod and the breastplate.

10 “All the artisans among you shall come and make what the Lord has commanded: 11 the tabernacle, its tent, its covering, its hooks, its boards, its bars, its pillars, its bases; 12 the Ark and its poles, the seat of atonement, and the veil of the screen; 13 the table with its poles and all its accessories, the bread of the Presence; 14 the lampstand that provides light and its accessories, the lamps, and the oil for light; 15 the altar of incense with its poles, the anointing oil, and the fragrant incense; the screen for the door at the entrance to the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burnt offerings with its bronze grate, its poles, and all its accessories; the basin and its base; 17 the drapes for the courtyard, their columns, and their bases, and the screen for the gate of the courtyard; 18 the pegs for the tabernacle and the pegs for the courtyard and their cords; 19 the carefully prepared cloths for ministering in the sanctuary, the sacred vestments for Aaron the priest and the vestments for his sons to exercise their priesthood.”

20 All the community of the children of Israel left the presence of Moses. 21 Then those whose hearts were stirred and whose spirits moved them came and brought the Lord’s offerings to be used for the construction of the meeting tent and for all its service and for the sacred vestments. 22 Men and women came forward, those whose hearts were willing, and they brought brooches and earrings and rings and armlets, all kinds of golden objects, and each man dedicated his gold unto the Lord.

23 All those who had blue or purple or scarlet cloth, or fine linen, or goat hair, or rams’ skins dyed red, or sheep skins brought them. 24 Those who could make an offering of silver or bronze offered it to the Lord. Likewise, those who had acacia wood for some purpose brought it.

25 Furthermore, all the skilled women spun with their hands and brought the blue, purple, and scarlet cloth and the fine linen they had spun. 26 All the women whose hearts were moved by wisdom spun goat hair. 27 The leaders brought onyx stones and stones for setting in the ephod and the breastplate, 28 balsam and oil for light, oil of anointing, and fragrant incense. 29 Thus, all the men and women whose hearts moved them to bring something for the construction that the Lord had commanded them to build through Moses brought it. The children of Israel brought their freewill offerings to the Lord.

30 The Artisans. Moses said to the children of Israel, “Behold, the Lord has summoned Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, by name. 31 He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with ability in every type of craft, 32 to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze, 33 to know how to cut stones for settings and how to carve wood. He is expert in every craft. 34 He has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with the skill needed to do the work of the engraver, the designer, and the embroiderer, to work with blue and purple and scarlet cloth and fine linen, and to weave. They can do the work of any craftsman or designer.

John 14

The Way, the Truth, and the Life[a]

Chapter 14

Jesus, the Way, Leads to the Father[b]

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You place your trust in God.[c]
Trust also in me.
In my Father’s house
there are many dwelling places.
If there were not,
would I have told you
that I am going to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again
and will take you to myself,
so that where I am,
you may also be.
You know the way
to the place I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

Jesus, the Truth, Reveals the Father[d]

Jesus replied,

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father
except through me.
If you know me,
then you will know my Father also.
From now on you do know him.
You have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, it will be enough for us.” Jesus answered,

“Have I been with you all this time, Philip,
and you still do not know me?
Whoever has seen me
has seen the Father.
How can you say,
‘Show us the Father’?
10 Do you not believe
that I am in the Father
and the Father is in me?
“The words that I speak to you
I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me
is doing his works.
11 Believe me when I say
that I am in the Father
and the Father is in me.
But if you do not,
then believe
because of the works themselves.

Jesus, the Life, Communicates the Spirit[e]

12 “Amen, amen, I say to you,
the one who believes in me
will also do the works that I do,
and indeed will do even greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.
13 Whatever you ask in my name I will do,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If you ask me for anything in my name,
I will do it.
15 “If you love me,
you will keep my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you another Advocate
to be with you forever,
17 the Spirit of Truth
whom the world cannot accept
because it neither sees him nor knows him.
But you know him,
because he dwells with you
and will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you orphans;
I will come to you.
19 In a little while,
the world will no longer see me,
but you will see me.
Because I live,
you also will live.
20 On that day, you will know
that I am in my Father,
and you in me, and I in you.
21 “Anyone who has received my commandments
and observes them
is the one who loves me.
And whoever loves me
will be loved by my Father,
and I will love him
and reveal myself to him.”

22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot)[f] asked him, “Lord, why is it that you are revealing yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him,

“Whoever loves me will keep my word,
and my Father will love him,
and we will come to him
and make our abode with him.
24 Whoever does not love me
does not keep my words.
And the word that you hear
is not my own,
but that of the Father who sent me.
25 “I have told you these things
while I am still with you.
26 However, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name,
will teach you everything
and remind you of all
that I have said to you.

The Peace of Jesus[g]

27 “Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives
do I give it to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled;
be not afraid.
28 “You have heard me say to you,
‘I am going away,
and I will come back to you.’
If you loved me,
you would rejoice
that I am going to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I.[h]
29 And now I have told you this
before it happens,
so that when it does happen
you may believe.
30 “I will no longer talk at length with you
because the prince of the world is coming.
He has no power over me,
31 but the world must come to understand
that I love the Father
and that I do
just as the Father has commanded me.
Get up! Let us be on our way.

Proverbs 11

Chapter 11

The Fruit of the Righteous . . .[a]

False scales are an abomination to the Lord,
but a true weight is pleasing to him.
When pride is nurtured, disgrace soon follows,
but wisdom is the hallmark of the humble.
The upright are guarded by their integrity;
the treacherous are destroyed by their own duplicity.
Riches will be of no avail on the day of wrath,[b]
    but righteousness delivers from death.
The virtue of the honest man keeps his way straight,
whereas the evil man falls as a result of his wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright saves them,
but the treacherous are trapped by their own schemes.
When a wicked man dies, all his expectations die with him,
and the hope he placed in his riches comes to nought.
The righteous man escapes affliction,
and the wicked man incurs it instead.
With his mouth the godless man seeks to ruin his neighbor,
but knowledge enables the righteous to be delivered.
10 The city rejoices when the upright prosper,
and when the wicked are ruined, there is exultation.
11 Through the blessing of the righteous a city is raised,
but it is destroyed by the mouth of the wicked.
12 A man who lacks sense belittles a neighbor,
but an intelligent man remains silent.
13 One who gossips reveals secrets,
but a trustworthy man keeps things hidden.
14 For lack of leadership a nation collapses;
safety is assured with a multitude of advisers.
15 Whoever puts up bail for a stranger will suffer loss,
but the one who refuses to do so will be safe.
16 A gracious woman acquires honor,
while the woman who hates virtue is covered with shame.
Those who are lazy become destitute,
but those who are diligent gain wealth.[c]
17 A kind man benefits himself,
whereas a cruel man hurts himself.
18 The labors of the wicked man produce little profit,
but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
19 Whoever is steadfast in righteousness finds life,
but the one who pursues evil is on the road to death.
20 Those with perverse hearts are abhorrent to the Lord,
but those whose ways are blameless are dear to him.
21 You need have no fear that the wicked will not be punished,
but those who are righteous will escape harm.
22 Like a ring of gold[d] in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman without good sense.
23 The righteous desire only what is good;
the expectation of the wicked ends in wrath.
24 One man gives lavishly and increases his wealth,
while another is tight-fisted and ends up impoverished.[e]
25 A generous person will be enriched;
he who refreshes others will also be refreshed.
26 The people curse those who hoard grain,
but the one who sells it earns their blessing.
27 Whoever strives for good earns great acclaim,
but the one who pursues evil will be afflicted by it.
28 Whoever places his trust in riches will fall,
but the righteous will flourish like sprouting leaves.
29 Whoever causes trouble for his family inherits the wind,
and a fool will become a servant to the wise man.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and the wise man wins souls.[f]
31 If the just man receives his deserts on earth,
how much more will the wicked and the sinner!

Ephesians 4

New Life in the Church

For Christians in General[a]

Chapter 4

Christian Unity and Maturity.[b] Therefore, as a prisoner for the Lord, I implore you to behave in a manner worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another in a spirit of love. Make every possible effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

There is one body and one Spirit, as well as one hope to which you have been called by your vocation, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

But each of us was given grace according to the measure in which Christ allotted it. Therefore, it is written,

“When he ascended to the heights,
    he took prisoners into captivity
    and gave gifts to men.”

Now the word “ascended” implies that he also descended into the lower regions of the earth. 10 The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.

11 It was he who established some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,[c] 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry in building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us attain to the unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to full maturity, as measured by the full stature of Christ.

14 In this way, we will no longer be like children, tossed back and forth by the waves and swept along by every new wind of teaching, emanating from human cunning and craftiness and leading people into error. 15 Rather, professing truth and love, we will in all things grow into him who is the head, Christ. 16 From him, the entire body, joined and held together by every ligament, continues to grow and to build itself up in love, as each part performs its particular function.

17 The Newness of the Christian Life. Therefore, I declare and attest in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and their hardness of heart. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have abandoned themselves to vice, committing every kind of impurity in growing excess.

20 That is not how you learned Christ. 21 Clearly, you were told about him and were taught what the truth is in Jesus. 22 You were taught to cast aside the old self of your former way of life that had been corrupted by its captivating desires. 23 You are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to clothe yourselves with the new self created in God’s image, in the way of uprightness and holiness that belong to the truth.

25 A Life Based on Love. Therefore, cease your lying and speak the truth to each other, for we are all members of one another. 26 If you are angry, do not sin. Do not let the sun set on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opening. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must no longer do so; rather, let him labor, performing some honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with those in need.

29 Let no foul word ever pass your lips. Say only what is useful for edification, so that your words may benefit your listeners. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal for the day of redemption. 31 Remove all forms of bitterness and wrath and anger and shouting and slander, as well as all malice from your lives. 32 Rather, be kind to one another and compassionate, and forgive one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.
