4 2 The princes and rulers under Solomon. 22 The purveyance for his victuals. 26 The number of his horses. 32 His books and writings.
1 And king Solomon was king over all Israel.
2 And these were [a]his princes, [b]Azariah the son of Zadok the Priest,
3 Elihoreph and Ahijah the sons of Shisha, Scribes, Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the Recorder,
4 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host, and Zadok and [c]Abiathar, Priests,
5 And Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers, and Zabud the son of Nathan, Priest, was the king’s friend,
6 And Ahishar was over the household, and (A)Adoniram the son of Abda was over the tribute.
7 ¶ And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided victuals for the king and his household: each man had a month in the year to provide victuals.
8 And these are their names: the son of Hur in mount Ephraim:
9 The son of Deker in Makaz, and in Shaalbim and Beth Shemesh, and [d]Elon and Beth Hanan:
10 The son of Hesed in Arubboth, to whom pertained Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher:
11 The son of Abinadab in all the region of Dor, which had Taphath the daughter of Solomon to wife.
12 Baana the son of Ahilud in Taanach, and Megiddo, and in all Beth Shean, which is by Zaretan beneath Jezreel, from Beth Shean [e]to Abel Meholah, even till beyond over against Jokneam:
13 The son of Geber in Ramoth Gilead, and his were the towns of [f]Jair, the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead, and under him was the region of Argob, which is in Bashan: threescore great cities with walls and bars of brass.
14 ¶ Ahinadab the son of Iddo had to Mahanaim:
15 Ahimaaz in Naphtali, and he took Basemath the daughter of Solomon to wife:
16 Baanah the son of Hushai in Asher and in Aloth:
17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah in [g]Issachar:
18 Shimei the son of Elah in Benjamin:
19 Geber the son of Uri in the country of Gilead, the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan, and was officer alone in the land.
20 Judah and Israel were many, as the sand of the sea in number, [h]eating, drinking, and making merry.
21 And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms, from the [i]River unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt, and they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
22 And Solomon’s victuals for one day were thirty [j]measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal:
23 Ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, besides harts, and bucks, and bugles, and fat fowl.
24 For he ruled in all the region on the other side of the River, from Tiphsah even unto [k]Gaza, over all the [l]kings on the other side the River: and he had peace round about him on every side.
25 And Judah and Israel dwelt without fear every man under his vine, and under his fig tree, from [m]Dan, even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
26 ¶ And Solomon had (B)forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.
27 And these officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came to king Solomon’s table, every man his month, and they suffered to lack nothing.
28 Barley also and straw for the horses and mules, brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.
29 ¶ And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and [n]a large heart, even as the sand that is on the seashore,
30 And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the [o]East, and all the wisdom of Egypt.
31 For he was wiser than any man: yea, than were Ethan the Ezrahite, than Heman, than Chalcol, than Darda the sons of Mahol: and he was famous throughout all nations round about.
32 And Solomon spake three thousand [p]proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
33 And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon, even unto the [q]hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowls, and of creeping things, and of fishes.
34 And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
5 1 Hiram sendeth to Solomon, and Solomon to him, purposing to build the house of God. 6 He prepareth the stuff for the building. 13 The number of the workmen.
1 And Hiram king of [r]Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon, (for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father) because Hiram had ever loved David.
2 (C)And Solomon sent him to Hiram, saying,
3 Thou knowest that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the Lord his God, for the wars which were about him on every side, until the Lord had put [s]them under the soles of his feet.
4 But now the Lord my God hath given me [t]rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary, nor evil to resist.
5 And behold, I purpose to build an house unto the Name of the Lord my God, (D)as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne for thee, he shall build an house unto my Name.
6 Now therefore command, that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon, and my servants shall be with thy servants, and unto thee will I give the [u]hire for thy servants, according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there are none among us, that can hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
7 ¶ And when [v]Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the Lord this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this mighty people.
8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things, for the which thou sentest unto me, and will accomplish all thy desire, concerning the cedar trees and fir trees.
9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea: and I will convey them by sea [w]in rafts unto the place that thou shalt show me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: now thou shalt do me a pleasure to minister food for [x]my family.
10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees, even his full desire.
11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand [y]measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of [z]beaten oil. Thus much gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.
12 ¶ And the Lord gave Solomon wisdom as he (E)promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and they [aa]two made a covenant.
13 ¶ And King Solomon raised a sum out of all Israel, and the sum was thirty thousand men:
14 Whom he sent to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by course: they were a month in Lebanon, and two months at home. And (F)Adoniram was over the sum.
15 And Solomon had seventy thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand masons in the mountain,
16 Besides the [ab]princes, whom Solomon appointed over the work, even three thousand and three hundred, which ruled the people that wrought in the work.
17 And the King commanded them, and they brought great stones and costly stones to make the foundations of the house, even hewed stones.
18 And Solomon’s workmen, and the workmen of Hiram, and the [ac]masons hewed and prepared timber and stones for the building of the house.
2 1 The better to set out the grace of Christ, he useth a comparison, calling them to mind, 5 that they were altogether castaways and aliants, 8 that they are saved by grace, 13 and brought near, 16 by reconciliation through Christ, 17 published by the Gospel.
1 And (A)[a]you hath he quickened, that were [b]dead in [c]trespasses and sins,
2 [d]Wherein, in times past ye walked, [e]according to the course of this world, and [f]after the prince that ruleth in the air, even the spirit, that now [g]worketh in the [h]children of disobedience,
3 [i]Among whom we also had our conversation in time past in the lusts of our [j]flesh, in fulfilling the will of the flesh, and of the mind, and [k]were by nature the [l]children of wrath, as well as [m]others.
4 [n]But God which is rich in mercy, through his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead by sins, hath quickened us together in Christ, by whose grace ye are saved,
6 And hath raised us up [o]together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7 That he might show in the ages to come the exceeding riches of his grace through his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8 For by [p]grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God,
9 [q]Not of works, lest any man should boast himself.
10 For we are [r]his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath ordained, that we should walk in them.
11 [s]Wherefore remember that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, and [t]called uncircumcision of them, which are [u]called circumcision in the flesh, made with hands,
12 That ye were, I say, at that time [v]without Christ, and were [w]aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and were (B)strangers from the covenants of promise, and had no hope, and were without God in the world.
13 [x]But now in Christ Jesus, ye which once were far off, are made near by the blood of Christ.
14 [y]For he is our peace, which hath made of both one, and hath broken the stop of the partition wall,
15 (C)In abrogating through his flesh the hatred, that is, the Law of commandments which standeth in ordinances, for to make of twain one new man in himself, so making peace,
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in [z]one body by his cross, and [aa]slay hatred thereby,
17 [ab]And came, and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were near.
18 For [ac]through him we both have an entrance unto the Father by one Spirit.
19 [ad]Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners: but citizens with the Saints, and of the household of God.
20 [ae]And are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the [af]chief cornerstone,
21 In whom all the building [ag]coupled together, groweth unto an holy Temple in the Lord.
22 In whom ye also are built together to be the habitation of God by the Spirit.
35 2 The destruction that shall come on mount Seir, because they troubled the people of Israel.
1 Moreover, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, Set thy face against mount [a]Seir, and prophesy against it,
3 And say unto it, Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, O mount Seir, I come against thee, and I will stretch out mine hand against thee, and I will make thee desolate and waste.
4 I will lay thy cities waste, and thou shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
5 Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast put the children of Israel to flight by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, when their [b]iniquity had an end,
6 Therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: except thou [c]hate blood, even blood shall pursue thee.
7 Thus will I make mount Seir desolate and waste, and cut off from it him that passeth out and him that returneth.
8 And I will fill his mountains with his slain men: in thine hills, and in thy valleys, and in all thy rivers shall they fall, that are slain with the sword.
9 I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not [d]return, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
10 Because thou hast said, [e]These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess them (seeing the Lord was [f]there)
11 Therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, I will even do according to thy [g]wrath, and according to thine indignation, which thou hast used in thine hatred against them: and I will make myself known among [h]them, when I have judged thee.
12 And thou shalt know, that I the Lord have heard all the blasphemies which thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They lie waste, they are given us to be devoured.
13 Thus with your mouths ye have boasted against me, and I have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them.
14 Thus saith the Lord God, So shall all the world rejoice, when I shall make thee desolate.
15 As thou didst rejoice at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt be desolate, O mount Seir, and all Idumea wholly, and they shall know that I am the Lord.
85 1 Because God withdrew not his rods from his Church after their return from Babylon, first they put him in mind of their deliverance, to the intent that he should not leave the work of his grace imperfect. 5 Next they complain of their long affliction. 8 And thirdly, they rejoice in hope of felicity promised. 9 For their deliverance was a figure of Christ’s kingdom, under the which should be perfect felicity.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm committed to the sons of Korah.
1 Lord, thou hast been [a]favorable unto thy land: thou hast brought again the captivity of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, and [b]covered all their sins. Selah.
3 Thou hast withdrawn all thine anger, and hast turned back from the [c]fierceness of thy wrath.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and release thine anger toward us.
5 Wilt thou be angry with us [d]forever? and wilt thou prolong thy wrath from one generation to another?
6 Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7 Show us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy [e]salvation.
8 I will hearken what the Lord God will say: for he will speak [f]peace unto his people, and to his Saints, that they turn not again to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is near to them that fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth shall meet, righteousness and peace shall kiss one another.
11 [g]Truth shall bud out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the Lord shall give good things, and our land shall give her increase.
13 [h]Righteousness shall go before him, and shall set her steps in the way.
