M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
The Slaughter of Animals
17 The Lord spoke to Moses, 2 “Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites, and tell them, ‘This is the word that the Lord has commanded, 3 “Blood guilt[a] will be accounted to any man[b] from the house of Israel[c] who slaughters an ox or a lamb or a goat inside the camp or outside the camp,[d] 4 but has not brought it to the entrance of the Meeting Tent[e] to present it as[f] an offering to the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord. He has shed blood, so that man will be cut off from the midst of his people.[g] 5 This is so that[h] the Israelites will bring their sacrifices that they are sacrificing in the open field[i] to the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent—to the priest—and sacrifice them there as peace-offering sacrifices to the Lord. 6 The priest is to splash[j] the blood on the altar[k] of the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, and offer the fat up in smoke for a soothing aroma to the Lord. 7 So the people[l] must no longer offer[m] their sacrifices to the goat demons,[n] acting like prostitutes by going after them.[o] This is to be a perpetual statute for them throughout their generations.”’[p]
8 “You are to say to them: ‘Any man[q] from the house of Israel or[r] from the resident foreigners who live[s] in their[t] midst, who offers[u] a burnt offering or a sacrifice 9 but does not bring it to the entrance of the Meeting Tent to offer it[v] to the Lord—that person will be cut off from his people.[w]
Prohibition against Eating Blood
10 “‘Any man[x] from the house of Israel or from the resident foreigners who live[y] in their[z] midst who eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people,[aa] 11 for the life of every living thing[ab] is in the blood.[ac] So I myself have assigned it to you[ad] on the altar to make atonement for your lives, for the blood makes atonement by means of the life.[ae] 12 Therefore, I have said to the Israelites: No person among you is to eat blood,[af] and no resident foreigner[ag] who lives among you is to eat blood.
13 “‘Any man from the Israelites[ah] or from the resident foreigners[ai] who live in their[aj] midst who hunts a wild animal[ak] or a bird that may be eaten[al] must pour out its blood and cover it with soil, 14 for the life of all flesh is its blood.[am] So I have said to the Israelites: You must not eat the blood of any living thing[an] because the life of every living thing is its blood—all who eat it will be cut off.[ao]
Regulations for Eating Carcasses
15 “‘Any person[ap] who eats an animal that has died of natural causes[aq] or an animal torn by beasts, whether a native citizen or a resident foreigner,[ar] must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening; then he will be clean. 16 But if he does not wash his clothes[as] and does not bathe his body, he will bear his punishment for his iniquity.’”[at]
Psalm 20[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
20 May the Lord answer[b] you[c] when you are in trouble;[d]
may the God of Jacob[e] make you secure.
2 May he send you help from his temple;[f]
from Zion may he give you support.
3 May he take notice of[g] all your offerings;
may he accept[h] your burnt sacrifice. (Selah)
4 May he grant your heart’s desire;[i]
may he bring all your plans to pass.[j]
5 Then we will shout for joy over your[k] victory;
we will rejoice[l] in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your requests.
6 Now I am sure[m] that the Lord will deliver[n] his chosen king;[o]
he will intervene for him[p] from his holy, heavenly temple,[q]
and display his mighty ability to deliver.[r]
7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses,[s]
but we[t] depend on[u] the Lord our God.
8 They will fall down,[v]
but we[w] will stand firm.[x]
9 The Lord will deliver the king;[y]
he will answer us[z] when we call to him for help![aa]
Psalm 21[ab]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
21 O Lord, the king rejoices in the strength you give;[ac]
he takes great delight in the deliverance you provide.[ad]
2 You grant[ae] him his heart’s desire;
you do not refuse his request.[af] (Selah)
3 For you bring him[ag] rich[ah] blessings;[ai]
you place a golden crown on his head.
4 He asked you to sustain his life,[aj]
and you have granted him long life and an enduring dynasty.[ak]
5 Your deliverance brings him great honor;[al]
you give him majestic splendor.[am]
6 For you grant him lasting blessings;
you give him great joy by allowing him into your presence.[an]
7 For the king trusts[ao] in the Lord,
and because of the Most High’s[ap] faithfulness he is not shaken.[aq]
8 You[ar] prevail over[as] all your enemies;
your power is too great for those who hate you.[at]
9 You burn them up like a fiery furnace[au] when you appear.[av]
The Lord angrily devours them;[aw]
the fire consumes them.
10 You destroy their offspring[ax] from the earth,
their descendants[ay] from among the human race.[az]
11 Yes,[ba] they intend to do you harm;[bb]
they dream up a scheme,[bc] but they do not succeed.[bd]
12 For you make them retreat[be]
when you aim your arrows at them.[bf]
13 Rise up, O Lord, in strength![bg]
We will sing and praise[bh] your power.
The Words of Lemuel
31 The words of King Lemuel,[a] an oracle[b] that his mother taught him:
2 O[c] my son, O son of my womb,
O son[d] of my vows,
3 do not give your strength[e] to women,
nor your ways[f] to that which ruins[g] kings.
4 It is not for kings,[h] O Lemuel,
it is not for kings to drink wine,[i]
or for rulers to crave strong drink,[j]
5 lest they drink and forget what is decreed,
and remove[k] from all the poor[l] their legal rights.[m]
6 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing,[n]
and wine to those who are bitterly distressed;[o]
7 let them[p] drink and forget[q] their poverty,
and remember their misery no more.
8 Open your mouth[r] on behalf of those unable to speak,[s]
for the legal rights of all the dying.[t]
9 Open your mouth, judge in righteousness,[u]
and plead the cause[v] of the poor and needy.
The Wife of Noble Character[w]
10 Who can find[x] a wife[y] of noble character?[z]
For her value[aa] is far more than rubies.[ab]
11 Her husband’s heart has trusted[ac] her,
and he does not lack the dividends.[ad]
12 She has rewarded him[ae] with good and not harm[af]
all the days of her life.
13 She sought out[ag] wool and flax,
then worked[ah] happily with her hands.[ai]
14 She was[aj] like the merchant ships;[ak]
she would bring in[al] her food from afar.
15 Then she rose[am] while it was still night,
and provided[an] food[ao] for her household and a portion[ap] to her female servants.
16 She considered[aq] a field and bought[ar] it;
from her own income[as] she planted[at] a vineyard.
17 She clothed[au] herself in might,
and she strengthened[av] her arms.
18 She perceived[aw] that her merchandise was good.
Her lamp[ax] would[ay] not go out in the night.
19 She extended[az] her hands[ba] to the spool,
and her hands grasped[bb] the spindle.
20 She opened[bc] her hand[bd] to the poor,
and extended[be] her hands to the needy.
21 She would not[bf] fear[bg] for her household in winter,[bh]
because all her household were clothed with scarlet,[bi]
22 because[bj] she had made[bk] coverings for herself;[bl]
and because her clothing was fine linen and purple.[bm]
23 Her husband is well-known[bn] in the city gate[bo]
when he sits with the elders[bp] of the land.
24 She made[bq] linen garments[br] then sold[bs] them,
and traded[bt] belts to the merchants;[bu]
25 her clothing[bv] was[bw] strong[bx] and splendid;
and she laughed[by] at the time[bz] to come.
26 She has opened[ca] her mouth[cb] with wisdom,
with loving instruction[cc] on her tongue.
27 Watching over[cd] the ways of her household,
she would not eat[ce] the bread of idleness.[cf]
28 Her children[cg] have risen[ch] and called[ci] her blessed;
her husband[cj] also has praised[ck] her:
29 “Many[cl] daughters[cm] have done valiantly,[cn]
but you have surpassed them all!”
30 Charm[co] is deceitful[cp] and beauty is fleeting.[cq]
A woman who fears the Lord[cr]—she makes herself praiseworthy.[cs]
31 Give[ct] her credit for what she has accomplished,[cu]
and let her works praise her[cv] in the city gates.[cw]
Prayer for All People
2 First of all, then, I urge that requests,[a] prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people,[b] 2 even for kings[c] and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 Such prayer for all[d] is good and welcomed before God our Savior, 4 since he wants[e] all people[f] to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one intermediary[g] between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human,[h] 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God’s purpose at his appointed time.[i] 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle—I am telling the truth;[j] I am not lying—and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8 So I want the men[k] in every place to pray,[l] lifting up holy hands[m] without anger or dispute.
Conduct of Women
9 Likewise[n] the women are to dress[o] in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control.[p] Their adornment must not be[q] with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing, 10 but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. 11 A woman must learn[r] quietly with all submissiveness. 12 But I do not allow[s] a woman to teach or exercise authority[t] over a man. She must remain quiet.[u] 13 For Adam was formed first and then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived,[v] fell into transgression.[w] 15 But she will be delivered through childbearing,[x] if she[y] continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control.
