M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
The Provision of Manna
16 [a] When[b] they journeyed from Elim, the entire company[c] of Israelites came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their exodus[d] from the land of Egypt. 2 The entire company[e] of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died[f] by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by[g] the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full,[h] for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill[i] this whole assembly with hunger!”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain[j] bread from heaven for you, and the people will go out[k] and gather the amount for each day, so that I may test them.[l] Will they walk in my law[m] or not? 5 On the sixth day[n] they will prepare what they bring in, and it will be twice as much as they gather every other day.”[o]
6 Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening[p] you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you will see[q] the glory of the Lord, because he has heard[r] your murmurings against the Lord. As for us, what are we,[s] that you should murmur against us?”
8 Moses said, “You will know this[t] when the Lord gives you[u] meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to satisfy you, because the Lord has heard your murmurings that you are murmuring against him. As for us, what are we?[v] Your murmurings are not against us,[w] but against the Lord.”
9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Tell the whole community[x] of the Israelites, ‘Come[y] before the Lord, because he has heard your murmurings.’”
10 As Aaron spoke[z] to the whole community of the Israelites and they looked toward the wilderness, there the glory of the Lord[aa] appeared[ab] in the cloud, 11 and the Lord spoke to Moses, 12 “I have heard the murmurings of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘During the evening[ac] you will eat meat,[ad] and in the morning you will be satisfied[ae] with bread, so that you may know[af] that I am the Lord your God.’”[ag]
13 In the evening the quail[ah] came up and covered the camp, and in the morning a layer of dew was all around the camp. 14 When[ai] the layer of dew had evaporated,[aj] there on the surface of the wilderness was a thin flaky substance,[ak] thin like frost on the earth. 15 When[al] the Israelites saw it, they said to one another,[am] “What is it?” because they did not know what it was.[an] Moses said to them, “It is the bread[ao] that the Lord has given you for food.[ap]
16 “This is what[aq] the Lord has commanded:[ar] ‘Each person is to gather[as] from it what he can eat, an omer[at] per person[au] according to the number[av] of your people;[aw] each one will pick it up[ax] for whoever lives[ay] in his tent.’” 17 The Israelites did so, and they gathered—some more, some less. 18 When[az] they measured with an omer, the one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little lacked nothing; each one had gathered what he could eat.
19 Moses said to them, “No one[ba] is to keep any of it[bb] until morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses; some[bc] kept part of it until morning, and it was full[bd] of worms and began to stink, and Moses was angry with them. 21 So they gathered it each morning,[be] each person according to what he could eat, and when the sun got hot, it would melt.[bf] 22 And[bg] on the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, two omers[bh] per person;[bi] and all the leaders[bj] of the community[bk] came and told[bl] Moses. 23 He said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a time of cessation from work,[bm] a holy Sabbath[bn] to the Lord. Whatever you want to[bo] bake, bake today;[bp] whatever you want to boil, boil today; whatever is left put aside for yourselves to be kept until morning.’”
24 So they put it aside until the morning, just as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the area.[bq] 26 Six days you will gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.”
27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather it, but they found nothing. 28 So the Lord said to Moses, “How long do you refuse[br] to obey my commandments and my instructions? 29 See, because the Lord has given you the Sabbath, that is why[bs] he is giving you food for two days on the sixth day. Each of you stay where you are;[bt] let no one[bu] go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 The house of Israel[bv] called its name “manna.”[bw] It was like coriander seed and was white, and it tasted[bx] like wafers with honey.
32 Moses said, “This is what[by] the Lord has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it to be kept[bz] for generations to come,[ca] so that they may see[cb] the food I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.’” 33 Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put in it an omer full of manna, and place it before the Lord to be kept for generations to come.” 34 Just as the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the ark of the testimony[cc] for safekeeping.[cd]
35 Now the Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was inhabited; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 (Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah.)[ce]
Jesus and Zacchaeus
19 Jesus[a] entered Jericho and was passing through it. 2 Now[b] a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector[c] and was rich. 3 He[d] was trying to get a look at Jesus,[e] but being a short man he could not see over the crowd.[f] 4 So[g] he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree[h] to see him, because Jesus[i] was going to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up[j] and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly,[k] because I must[l] stay at your house today.”[m] 6 So he came down quickly[n] and welcomed Jesus[o] joyfully.[p] 7 And when the people[q] saw it, they all complained,[r] “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”[s] 8 But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give[t] to the poor, and if[u] I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!” 9 Then[v] Jesus said to him, “Today salvation[w] has come to this household,[x] because he too is a son of Abraham![y] 10 For the Son of Man came[z] to seek and to save the lost.”
The Parable of the Ten Minas
11 While the people were listening to these things, Jesus[aa] proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought[ab] that the kingdom of God[ac] was going to[ad] appear immediately. 12 Therefore he said, “A nobleman[ae] went to a distant country to receive[af] for himself a kingdom and then return.[ag] 13 And he summoned ten of his slaves,[ah] gave them ten minas,[ai] and said to them, ‘Do business with these until I come back.’ 14 But his citizens[aj] hated[ak] him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man[al] to be king[am] over us!’ 15 When[an] he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned[ao] these slaves to whom he had given the money. He wanted[ap] to know how much they had earned[aq] by trading. 16 So[ar] the first one came before him and said, ‘Sir,[as] your mina[at] has made ten minas more.’ 17 And the king[au] said to him, ‘Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful[av] in a very small matter, you will have authority[aw] over ten cities.’ 18 Then[ax] the second one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 So[ay] the king[az] said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another[ba] slave[bb] came and said, ‘Sir, here is[bc] your mina that I put away for safekeeping[bd] in a piece of cloth.[be] 21 For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe[bf] man. You withdraw[bg] what you did not deposit[bh] and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 The king[bi] said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words,[bj] you wicked slave![bk] So you knew, did you, that I was a severe[bl] man, withdrawing what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put[bm] my money in the bank,[bn] so that when I returned I could have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to his attendants,[bo] ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.’[bp] 25 But[bq] they said to him, ‘Sir, he has ten minas already!’[br] 26 ‘I tell you that everyone who has will be given more,[bs] but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.[bt] 27 But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king,[bu] bring them here and slaughter[bv] them[bw] in front of me!’”
The Triumphal Entry
28 After Jesus[bx] had said this, he continued on ahead,[by] going up to Jerusalem.[bz] 29 Now[ca] when he approached Bethphage[cb] and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives,[cc] he sent two of the disciples, 30 telling them,[cd] “Go to the village ahead of you.[ce] When[cf] you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden.[cg] Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs[ch] it.’” 32 So those who were sent ahead found[ci] it exactly[cj] as he had told them. 33 As[ck] they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,[cl] “Why are you untying that colt?” 34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then[cm] they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks[cn] on the colt,[co] and had Jesus get on[cp] it. 36 As[cq] he rode along, they[cr] spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he approached the road leading down from[cs] the Mount of Olives,[ct] the whole crowd of his[cu] disciples began to rejoice[cv] and praise[cw] God with a loud voice for all the mighty works[cx] they had seen:[cy] 38 “Blessed is the king[cz] who comes in the name of the Lord![da] Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 But[db] some of the Pharisees[dc] in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”[dd] 40 He answered,[de] “I tell you, if they[df] keep silent, the very stones[dg] will cry out!”
Jesus Weeps for Jerusalem under Judgment
41 Now[dh] when Jesus[di] approached[dj] and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had only known on this day,[dk] even you, the things that make for peace![dl] But now they are hidden[dm] from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build[dn] an embankment[do] against you and surround you and close in on you from every side. 44 They will demolish you[dp]—you and your children within your walls[dq]—and they will not leave within you one stone[dr] on top of another,[ds] because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”[dt]
Cleansing the Temple
45 Then[du] Jesus[dv] entered the temple courts[dw] and began to drive out those who were selling things there,[dx] 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’[dy] but you have turned it into a den[dz] of robbers!”[ea]
47 Jesus[eb] was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law[ec] and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate[ed] him, 48 but[ee] they could not find a way to do it,[ef] for all the people hung on his words.[eg]
Elihu’s Second Speech[a]
34 Elihu answered:
2 “Listen to my words, you wise men;
hear[b] me, you learned men.[c]
3 For the ear assesses[d] words
as the mouth[e] tastes food.
4 Let us evaluate[f] for ourselves what is right;[g]
let us come to know among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job says, ‘I am innocent,[h]
but God turns away my right.
6 Concerning my right, should I lie?[i]
My wound[j] is incurable,
although I am without transgression.’[k]
7 Who is there like Job,
who[l] drinks derision[m] like water?
8 He goes about[n] in company[o] with evildoers,
he goes along[p] with wicked men.[q]
9 For he says, ‘It does not profit a man
when he makes his delight with God.’[r]
God is Not Unjust
10 “Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding.[s]
Far be it from[t] God to do wickedness,
from the Almighty to do evil.
11 For he repays a person for his work,[u]
and according to the conduct of a person,
he causes the consequences to find him.[v]
12 Indeed, in truth, God does not act wickedly,
and the Almighty does not pervert justice.
13 Who entrusted[w] to him the earth?
And who put him over[x] the whole world?
14 If God[y] were to set his heart on it,[z]
and gather in his spirit[aa] and his breath,
15 all flesh would perish together
and human beings would return to dust.
God Is Impartial and Omniscient
16 “If you have[ab] understanding, listen to this,
hear what I have to say.[ac]
17 Do you really think[ad]
that one who hates justice can govern?[ae]
And will you declare guilty
the supremely Righteous One,[af]
18 who says to a king,[ag] ‘Worthless man,’[ah]
and to nobles, ‘Wicked men,’
19 who shows no partiality to princes,
and does not take note of[ai] the rich more than the poor,
because all of them are the work of his hands?
20 In a moment they die, in the middle of the night,[aj]
people[ak] are shaken[al] and they pass away.
The mighty are removed effortlessly.[am]
21 For his eyes are on the ways of an individual,
he observes all a person’s[an] steps.
22 There is no darkness, and no deep darkness,
where evildoers can hide themselves.[ao]
23 For he does not still consider a person,[ap]
that he should come before God in judgment.
24 He shatters the great without inquiry,[aq]
and sets up others in their place.
25 Therefore, he knows their deeds,
he overthrows them[ar] in the night[as]
and they are crushed.
26 He strikes them for their wickedness,[at]
in a place where people can see,[au]
27 because they have turned away from following him,
and have not understood[av] any of his ways,
28 so that they caused[aw] the cry of the poor
to come before him,
so that he hears[ax] the cry of the needy.
29 But if God[ay] is quiet, who can condemn[az] him?
If he hides his face, then who can see him?
Yet[ba] he is over the individual and the nation alike,[bb]
30 so that the godless man should not rule,
and not lay snares for the people.[bc]
Job Is Foolish to Rebel
31 “Has anyone said to God,
‘I have endured chastisement,[bd]
but I will not act wrongly any more;
32 teach me what I cannot see;[be]
if I have done evil, I will do so no more’?
33 Is it your opinion[bf] that God[bg] should recompense it,
because you reject this?[bh]
But you must choose, and not I,
so tell us what you know.
34 Men of understanding say to me—
any wise man listening to me says—
35 that[bi] Job speaks without knowledge
and his words are without understanding.[bj]
36 But[bk] Job will be tested to the end,
because his answers are like those of wicked men.
37 For he adds transgression[bl] to his sin;
in our midst he claps his hands,[bm]
and multiplies his words against God.”
Paul’s Perseverance in Ministry
4 Therefore, since we have this ministry, just as God has shown us mercy,[a] we do not become discouraged.[b] 2 But we have rejected[c] shameful hidden deeds,[d] not behaving[e] with deceptiveness[f] or distorting the word of God, but by open proclamation of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience before God. 3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing, 4 among whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of those who do not believe[g] so they would not see the light of the glorious gospel[h] of Christ,[i] who is the image of God. 5 For we do not proclaim[j] ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves[k] for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said “Let light shine out of darkness,”[l] is the one who shined in our hearts to give us the light of the glorious knowledge[m] of God in the face of Christ.[n]
An Eternal Weight of Glory
7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that the extraordinary power[o] belongs to God and does not come from us. 8 We are experiencing trouble on every side,[p] but are not crushed; we are perplexed,[q] but not driven to despair; 9 we are persecuted, but not abandoned;[r] we are knocked down,[s] but not destroyed, 10 always carrying around in our body the death of Jesus,[t] so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible[u] in our body. 11 For we who are alive are constantly being handed over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible[v] in our mortal body.[w] 12 As a result,[x] death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.[y] 13 But since we have the same spirit of faith as that shown in[z] what has been written, “I believed; therefore I spoke,”[aa] we also believe, therefore we also speak. 14 We do so[ab] because we know that the one who raised up Jesus[ac] will also raise us up with Jesus and will bring us with you into his presence. 15 For all these things are for your sake, so that the grace that is including[ad] more and more people may cause thanksgiving to increase[ae] to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not despair,[af] but even if our physical body[ag] is wearing away, our inner person[ah] is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary, light suffering[ai] is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison 18 because we are not looking at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen. For what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
