Exodus 22

Chapter 22

[If a thief is caught[a] in the act of housebreaking and beaten to death, there is no bloodguilt involved. But if after sunrise he is thus beaten, there is bloodguilt.] He must make full restitution. If he has nothing, he shall be sold to pay for his theft. If what he stole is found alive in his possession, be it an ox, a donkey or a sheep, he shall make twofold restitution.

When someone causes a field or a vineyard to be grazed over, by sending his cattle to graze in another’s field, he must make restitution with the best produce of his own field or vineyard. If a fire breaks out, catches on to thorn bushes, and consumes shocked grain, standing grain, or the field itself, the one who started the fire must make full restitution.

Trusts and Loans. When someone gives money or articles to another for safekeeping and they are stolen from the latter’s house, the thief, if caught, must make twofold restitution. If the thief is not caught, the owner of the house shall be brought to God,[b] to swear that he himself did not lay hands on his neighbor’s property. In every case of dishonest appropriation, whether it be about an ox, or a donkey, or a sheep, or a garment, or anything else that has disappeared, where another claims that the thing is his, the claim of both parties shall be brought before God; the one whom God convicts must make twofold restitution to the other.

When someone gives an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any other animal to another for safekeeping, if it dies, or is maimed or snatched away, without anyone witnessing the fact, 10 there shall be an oath before the Lord between the two of them that the guardian did not lay hands on his neighbor’s property; the owner must accept the oath, and no restitution is to be made. 11 But if the guardian has actually stolen from it, then he must make restitution to the owner. 12 If it has been killed by a wild beast, let him bring it as evidence; he need not make restitution for the mangled animal.(A)

13 When someone borrows an animal from a neighbor, if it is maimed or dies while the owner is not present, that one must make restitution. 14 But if the owner is present, that one need not make restitution. If it was hired, this was covered by the price of its hire.

Social Laws. 15 (B)When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall make her his wife by paying the bride price. 16 If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still pay him the bride price for virgins.[c]

17 You shall not let a woman who practices sorcery live.(C)

18 Anyone who lies with an animal shall be put to death.(D)

19 Whoever sacrifices to any god, except to the Lord alone, shall be put under the ban.(E)

20 You shall not oppress or afflict a resident alien, for you were once aliens residing in the land of Egypt.(F) 21 You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. 22 If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely listen to their cry. 23 My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.

24 (G)If you lend money to my people, the poor among you, you must not be like a money lender; you must not demand interest from them. 25 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset; 26 for this is his only covering; it is the cloak for his body. What will he sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will listen; for I am compassionate.(H)

27 You shall not despise God,[d] nor curse a leader of your people.(I)

28 You shall not delay the offering of your harvest and your press. You shall give me the firstborn of your sons. 29 You must do the same with your oxen and your sheep; for seven days the firstling may stay with its mother, but on the eighth day you must give it to me.(J)

30 You shall be a people sacred to me. Flesh torn to pieces in the field you shall not eat; you must throw it to the dogs.(K)

John 1

I. Prologue[a]

Chapter 1

In the beginning[b] was the Word,
    and the Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.(A)
He was in the beginning with God.
[c]All things came to be through him,
    and without him nothing came to be.(B)
What came to be through him was life,
    and this life was the light of the human race;(C)
[d]the light shines in the darkness,(D)
    and the darkness has not overcome it.

[e]A man named John was sent from God.(E) He came for testimony,[f] to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.(F) He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.(G) The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.(H)

10 He was in the world,
    and the world came to be through him,
    but the world did not know him.
11 He came to what was his own,
    but his own people[g] did not accept him.

12 (I)But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 [h](J)who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh[i]
    and made his dwelling among us,
    and we saw his glory,
    the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
    full of grace and truth.(K)

15 [j]John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said,(L) ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’” 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,[k] 17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(M) 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God,[l] who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.(N)

II. The Book of Signs

John the Baptist’s Testimony to Himself. 19 [m]And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews[n] from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites [to him] to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 [o]he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted,(O) “I am not the Messiah.” 21 So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?”[p] And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”(P) 22 So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?” 23 He said:

“I am ‘the voice of one crying out in the desert,(Q)
“Make straight the way of the Lord,”’[q]

as Isaiah the prophet said.” 24 Some Pharisees[r] were also sent. 25 They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?”(R) 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water;[s] but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,(S) 27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” 28 This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,[t] where John was baptizing.

John the Baptist’s Testimony to Jesus. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God,[u] who takes away the sin of the world.(T) 30 [v]He is the one of whom I said,(U) ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ 31 I did not know him,[w] but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” 32 John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove[x] from the sky and remain upon him. 33 I did not know him,(V) but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.’(W) 34 [y](X)Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

The First Disciples.(Y) 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”[z] 37 The two disciples[aa] heard what he said and followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.[ab] 40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”[ac] (which is translated Anointed).(Z) 42 Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John;[ad] you will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).(AA)

43 The next day he[ae] decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”(AB) 46 But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite.[af] There is no duplicity in him.” 48 [ag](AC)Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God;[ah] you are the King of Israel.”(AD) 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?[ai] You will see greater things than this.” 51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen,[aj] I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”(AE)

Job 40

Chapter 40

The Lord then answered Job and said:

Will one who argues with the Almighty be corrected?
    Let him who would instruct God give answer!(A)

Then Job answered the Lord and said:

[a]Look, I am of little account; what can I answer you?
    I put my hand over my mouth.
I have spoken once, I will not reply;
    twice, but I will do so no more.

Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm and said:

Gird up your loins now, like a man.
    I will question you, and you tell me the answers!
[b]Would you refuse to acknowledge my right?
    Would you condemn me that you may be justified?
Have you an arm like that of God,
    or can you thunder with a voice like his?
10 Adorn yourself with grandeur and majesty,
    and clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
11 Let loose the fury of your wrath;
    look at everyone who is proud and bring them down.
12 Look at everyone who is proud, and humble them.
    Tear down the wicked in their place,
13     bury them in the dust together;
    in the hidden world imprison them.
14 Then will I too praise you,
    for your own right hand can save you.
15 Look at Behemoth,[c] whom I made along with you,
    who feeds on grass like an ox.
16 See the strength in his loins,
    the power in the sinews of his belly.
17 He carries his tail like a cedar;
    the sinews of his thighs are like cables.
18 His bones are like tubes of bronze;
    his limbs are like iron rods.
19 He is the first of God’s ways,
    only his maker can approach him with a sword.
20 For the mountains bring him produce,
    and all wild animals make sport there.
21 Under lotus trees he lies,
    in coverts of the reedy swamp.
22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
    all about him are the poplars in the wadi.
23 If the river grows violent, he is not disturbed;
    he is tranquil though the Jordan surges about his mouth.
24 Who can capture him by his eyes,
    or pierce his nose[d] with a trap?
25 Can you lead Leviathan[e] about with a hook,
    or tie down his tongue with a rope?
26 Can you put a ring into his nose,
    or pierce through his cheek with a gaff?
27 Will he then plead with you, time after time,
    or address you with tender words?
28 Will he make a covenant with you
    that you may have him as a slave forever?
29 Can you play with him, as with a bird?
    Can you tie him up for your little girls?
30 Will the traders bargain for him?
    Will the merchants[f] divide him up?
31 Can you fill his hide with barbs,
    or his head with fish spears?
32 Once you but lay a hand upon him,
    no need to recall any other conflict!

2 Corinthians 10

IV. Paul’s Defense of His Ministry[a]

Chapter 10

Accusation of Weakness.[b] Now I myself, Paul, urge you through the gentleness and clemency of Christ,[c] I who am humble when face to face with you, but brave toward you when absent, [d](A)I beg you that, when present, I may not have to be brave with that confidence with which I intend to act boldly against some who consider us as acting according to the flesh. For, although we are in the flesh, we do not battle according to the flesh,[e] for the weapons of our battle are not of flesh but are enormously powerful, capable of destroying fortresses. We destroy arguments(B) and every pretension raising itself against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive in obedience to Christ, and we are ready to punish every disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(C)

(D)Look at what confronts you. Whoever is confident of belonging to Christ should consider that as he belongs to Christ, so do we.[f] (E)And even if I should boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for tearing you down, I shall not be put to shame. [g]May I not seem as one frightening you through letters. 10 For someone will say, “His letters are severe and forceful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.”(F) 11 Such a person must understand that what we are in word through letters when absent, that we also are in action when present.(G)

12 [h]Not that we dare to class or compare ourselves with some of those who recommend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.(H) 13 But we will not boast beyond measure but will keep to the limits[i] God has apportioned us, namely, to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overreaching ourselves, as though we did not reach you; we indeed first came to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We are not boasting beyond measure, in other people’s labors; yet our hope is that, as your faith increases, our influence among you may be greatly enlarged, within our proper limits, 16 so that we may preach the gospel even beyond you, not boasting of work already done in another’s sphere.(I) 17 (J)“Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.”[j] 18 For it is not the one who recommends himself who is approved,[k] but the one whom the Lord recommends.(K)
