Ezekiel 29-30

Judgment of Egypt

29 In the (A)tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Son of man, set your face against (B)Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all (C)Egypt. Speak and say, ‘Thus says the Lord [a]God,

“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
The great [b](D)monster that lies in the midst of his [c]rivers,
That (E)has said, ‘My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’
“I will put (F)hooks in your jaws
And make the fish of your [d]rivers cling to your scales.
And I will bring you up out of the midst of your [e]rivers,
And all the fish of your [f]rivers will cling to your scales.
“I will (G)abandon you to the wilderness, you and all the fish of your [g]rivers;
You will fall on the [h]open field; you will not be brought together or [i](H)gathered.
I have given you for (I)food to the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the sky.
“Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord,
Because they have been only a (J)staff made of reed to the house of Israel.
“When they took hold of you with the hand,
You (K)broke and tore all their [j]hands;
And when they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their loins [k]quake.”

‘Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I will (L)bring upon you a sword and I will cut off from you man and beast. The (M)land of Egypt will become a desolation and waste. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

Because [l]you (N)said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am (O)against you and against your [m]rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and even to the border of [n]Ethiopia. 11 A man’s foot will (P)not pass through it, and the foot of a beast will not pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. 12 So I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the (Q)midst of desolated lands. And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate forty years; and I will (R)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands.”

13 ‘For thus says the Lord God, “At the end of forty years I will (S)gather the Egyptians from the peoples [o]among whom they were scattered. 14 I will turn the fortunes of Egypt and make them return to the land of (T)Pathros, to the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the (U)lowest of the kingdoms, and it will never again lift itself up above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will not (V)rule over the nations. 16 And it will never again be the (W)confidence of the house of Israel, [p](X)bringing to mind the iniquity of their having turned [q]to Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”’”

17 Now in the (Y)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me saying, 18 “Son of man, (Z)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor [r]hard against Tyre; every head was made (AA)bald and every shoulder was rubbed bare. But he and his army had no wages from Tyre for the labor that he had [s]performed against it.” 19 Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I (AB)will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her [t](AC)wealth and capture her spoil and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his labor which he [u](AD)performed, because they acted for Me,” declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day I will make a (AE)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [v](AF)open your mouth in their midst. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Lament over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came again to me saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord [w]God,

(AG)Wail, ‘Alas for the day!’
“For the day is near,
Even (AH)the day of the Lord is near;
It will be a day of (AI)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
“A sword will come upon Egypt,
And anguish will be in [x]Ethiopia;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They (AJ)take away her [y]wealth,
And her foundations are torn down.

[z]Ethiopia, Put, Lud, all [aa](AK)Arabia, [ab]Libya and the [ac]people of the land [ad]that is in league will fall with them by the sword.”

‘Thus says the Lord,
“Indeed, those who support (AL)Egypt will fall
And the pride of her power will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares the Lord God.
“They will be desolate
In the (AM)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the devastated cities.
“And they will (AN)know that I am the Lord,
When I set a (AO)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

On that day (AP)messengers will go forth from Me in ships to frighten (AQ)secure [ae]Ethiopia; and (AR)anguish will be on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it comes!”

10 ‘Thus says the Lord God,

(AS)I will also make the [af]hordes of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 “He and his people with him,
(AT)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to destroy the land;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
12 “Moreover, I will make the (AU)Nile canals dry
And (AV)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate
And [ag]all that is in it,
By the hand of strangers; I the Lord have spoken.”

13 ‘Thus says the Lord God,

“I will also (AW)destroy the idols
And make the [ah]images cease from [ai](AX)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 “I will make (AY)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in (AZ)Zoan
And execute judgments on [aj](BA)Thebes.
15 “I will pour out My wrath on [ak]Sin,
The stronghold of Egypt;
I will also cut off the hordes of [al]Thebes.
16 “I will set a fire in Egypt;
[am]Sin will writhe in anguish,
[an]Thebes will be breached
And [ao]Memphis will have [ap]distresses daily.
17 “The young men of [aq](BB)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And [ar]the women will go into captivity.
18 “In (BC)Tehaphnehes the day will [as]be (BD)dark
When I (BE)break there the yoke bars of Egypt.
Then the pride of her power will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
19 “Thus I will (BF)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

Victory for Babylon

20 In the (BG)eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh of the month, the word of the Lord came to me saying, 21 “Son of man, I have (BH)broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, behold, it has not been (BI)bound up [at]for healing [au]or wrapped with a bandage, that it may be strong to hold the sword. 22 Therefore thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am (BJ)against Pharaoh king of Egypt and will break his arms, both the strong and the (BK)broken; and I will make the sword (BL)fall from his hand. 23 I will (BM)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands. 24 For I will (BN)strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (BO)My sword in his hand; and I will break the arms of Pharaoh, so that he will groan before him with the groanings of a wounded man. 25 Thus I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he (BP)stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26 When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands, then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Hebrews 11:32-12:13

32 And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of (A)Gideon, (B)Barak, (C)Samson, (D)Jephthah, of (E)David and (F)Samuel and the prophets, 33 who by faith (G)conquered kingdoms, (H)performed acts of righteousness, (I)obtained promises, (J)shut the mouths of lions, 34 (K)quenched the power of fire, (L)escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, (M)became mighty in war, (N)put foreign armies to flight. 35 (O)Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their [a]release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection; 36 and others [b]experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also (P)chains and imprisonment. 37 They were (Q)stoned, they were (R)sawn in two, [c]they were tempted, they were (S)put to death with the sword; they went about (T)in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, (U)ill-treated 38 (men of whom the world was not worthy), (V)wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes [d]in the ground.

39 And all these, having [e](W)gained approval through their faith, (X)did not receive [f]what was promised, 40 because God had [g]provided (Y)something better for us, so that (Z)apart from us they would not be made perfect.

Jesus, the Example

12 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also (AA)lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us (AB)run with (AC)endurance the race that is set before us, [h]fixing our eyes on Jesus, the [i](AD)author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him (AE)endured the cross, (AF)despising the shame, and has (AG)sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For (AH)consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [j](AI)and lose heart.

A Father’s Discipline

(AJ)You have not yet resisted [k](AK)to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

(AL)My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
Nor (AM)faint when you are reproved by Him;
(AN)For those (AO)whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.”

It is for discipline that you endure; (AP)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, (AQ)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had [l]earthly fathers to discipline us, and we (AR)respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to (AS)the Father of [m]spirits, and (AT)live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, (AU)so that we may share His holiness. 11 All discipline (AV)for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the (AW)peaceful fruit of righteousness.

12 Therefore, [n](AX)strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and (AY)make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather (AZ)be healed.

Psalm 112

Prosperity of the One Who Fears the Lord.

112 [a]Praise [b]the Lord!
How (A)blessed is the man who [c]fears the Lord,
Who greatly (B)delights in His commandments.
His [d](C)descendants will be mighty [e]on earth;
The generation of the (D)upright will be blessed.
(E)Wealth and riches are in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
Light arises in the darkness (F)for the upright;
He is (G)gracious and compassionate and righteous.
It is well with the man who (H)is gracious and lends;
He will [f]maintain his cause in judgment.
For he will (I)never be shaken;
The (J)righteous will be [g]remembered forever.

He will not fear (K)evil tidings;
His (L)heart is steadfast, (M)trusting in the Lord.
His (N)heart is upheld, he (O)will not fear,
Until he (P)looks with satisfaction on his adversaries.
[h]He (Q)has given freely to the poor,
His righteousness endures forever;
His (R)horn will be exalted in honor.

10 The (S)wicked will see it and be [i]vexed,
He will (T)gnash his teeth and (U)melt away;
The (V)desire of the wicked will perish.

Proverbs 27:17

17 Iron sharpens iron,
So one man sharpens another.
