Isaiah 28:14-30:11

A Cornerstone in Zion

14 Therefore, (A)hear the word of Yahweh, O (B)scoffers,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
15 Because you have said, “We have cut a (C)covenant with death,
And with Sheol we have made a [a]pact.
(D)The overflowing [b]scourge will not reach us when it passes by,
For we have made (E)falsehood our refuge and we have (F)hidden ourselves with lying.”

16 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh,

(G)Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested (H)stone,
A costly cornerstone for the foundation, [c]firmly placed.
He who believes in it will not be [d]disturbed.
17 I will make (I)justice the measuring line
And righteousness the level;
Then (J)hail will sweep away the refuge of falsehood,
And the waters will overflow the secret place.
18 Your (K)covenant with death will be [e](L)canceled,
And your pact with Sheol will not stand;
When the (M)overflowing scourge passes through,
Then you will become its (N)trampling place.
19 As (O)often as it passes through, it will take you;
For (P)morning after morning it will pass through, anytime during the day or night,
And it will be [f]sheer (Q)terror to understand the report.”
20 The bed is too short on which to stretch out,
And the (R)blanket is too narrow to wrap oneself in.
21 For Yahweh will rise up as at Mount (S)Perazim;
He will be stirred up as in the valley of (T)Gibeon,
To work His (U)work, His [g](V)unusual work,
And to labor in His labor, His [h]exceptional labor.
22 So now do not carry on as (W)scoffers,
Lest your fetters be made stronger;
For I have heard from Lord Yahweh of hosts
Of complete (X)destruction, one that is decreed, on all the earth.

23 Give ear and hear my voice,
Pay attention and hear my words.
24 Does the [i]farmer plow [j]continually to plant seed?
Does he continually [k]turn and harrow his ground?
25 Does he not level its surface
And sow dill and scatter (Y)cumin
And [l]plant (Z)wheat in rows,
Barley in its place and rye within its [m]area?
26 For his God disciplines and teaches him proper judgment.
27 For dill is not threshed with a (AA)threshing sledge,
Nor is the wheel of a cart [n]driven over cumin;
But dill is beaten out with a staff, and cumin with a rod.
28 Grain for bread is crushed,
But he does not continue to thresh it forever.
Because the wheel of his cart and his horses eventually [o]disturb it,
He does not crush it longer.
29 This also comes from Yahweh of hosts,
Who has made His counsel (AB)wonderful and His wisdom (AC)great.

Woe to Ariel

29 Woe, O [p]Ariel, [q]Ariel the city where David once (AD)camped!
Add year to year, [r](AE)observe your feasts on schedule.
I will bring distress to [s]Ariel,
And she will be a city of mourning and (AF)moaning;
And she will be like an Ariel to me.
And I will (AG)camp against you [t]encircling you,
And I will fortify siegeworks against you,
And I will raise up fortifications against you.
Then you will (AH)be brought low;
From the earth you will speak,
And from the dust where you are prostrate
Your words will come.
Your voice will also be like that of a [u]spirit from the ground,
And your speech will whisper from the dust.

But it will be that the multitude of your [v]enemies will become like fine (AI)dust,
And the multitude of the (AJ)ruthless ones like the chaff which [w]blows away;
And it will happen (AK)instantly, suddenly.
From Yahweh of hosts you will be (AL)punished with (AM)thunder and earthquake and loud noise,
With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.
And it will be that the (AN)multitude of all the nations who wage war against [x]Ariel,
Even all who wage war against her and her stronghold, and who distress her,
Will be like a dream, a (AO)vision of the night.
And it will be as when a hungry man dreams—
And behold, he is eating;
But he awakens, and his soul is empty,
Or as when a thirsty man dreams—
And behold, he is drinking,
But he awakens, and behold, he is faint,
And his soul is not quenched.
(AP)Thus the multitude of all the nations will be
Who wage war against Mount Zion.

(AQ)Astonish yourselves and be astonished,
Blind yourselves and be blind;
They (AR)become drunk, but not with wine;
They stagger, but not with strong drink.
10 For Yahweh has poured over you a spirit of deep (AS)sleep;
He has (AT)shut your eyes, the prophets;
And He has covered your heads, the seers.

11 The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed [y](AU)book, which when they give it to the one who [z]is literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” 12 Then the [aa]book will be given to the one who [ab]does not know how to read a book, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I [ac]do not know how to read a book.”

13 Then the Lord said,

“Because (AV)this people draw near with their mouth
And honor Me with their lips,
But they remove their hearts far from Me,
And their fear of Me is in the command of men learned by rote,
14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal (AW)marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And (AX)the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the discernment of their discerning men will be hidden.”

15 Woe to those who deeply (AY)hide their counsel from Yahweh,
And whose (AZ)deeds are done in a dark place,
And they say, “(BA)Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
16 You turn things around!
Shall the potter be considered [ad]as equal with the clay,
That (BB)what is made would say to its maker, “He did not make me”;
Or what is formed say to him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?

The Afflicted Will Rejoice

17 Is it not yet just a little while
[ae]Before Lebanon will be turned into a (BC)fruitful orchard,
And the fruitful orchard will be counted as a forest?
18 On that day the (BD)deaf will hear (BE)words of a book,
And out of [af]darkness and thick darkness the (BF)eyes of the blind will see.
19 The (BG)afflicted also will increase their gladness in Yahweh,
And the (BH)needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the (BI)ruthless will come to an end and the (BJ)scoffer will be finished,
Indeed (BK)all who are watching out to do evil will be cut off;
21 Who [ag]cause a person to sin by a word,
And (BL)ensnare him who reproves at the gate,
And [ah](BM)defraud the one in the right with [ai]meaningless arguments.

22 Therefore thus says Yahweh, who redeemed (BN)Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:

“Jacob (BO)shall not now be ashamed, and now his face shall not turn pale;
23 But when [aj]he sees his (BP)children, the (BQ)work of My hands, in his midst,
They will sanctify My name;
Indeed, they will (BR)sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
And will stand trembling before the God of Israel.
24 Those who (BS)err in spirit will (BT)know discernment,
And those who [ak]criticize will [al](BU)gain learning.

Alliance with Egypt Condemned

30 “Woe to the (BV)rebellious children,” declares Yahweh,
“Who (BW)execute counsel, but not Mine,
And [am](BX)make an alliance, but not of My Spirit,
In order to add sin to sin,
Who (BY)go down to Egypt—
But did not (BZ)ask [an]Me—
(CA)To find strength in the strong defense of Pharaoh
And to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!
Therefore the strong defense of Pharaoh will be (CB)your shame
And the refuge in the shadow of Egypt, your dishonor.
For (CC)their princes are at Zoan
And their messengers reach Hanes.
Everyone will be (CD)ashamed because of a people who cannot profit them,
Who are (CE)not for help or profit, but for shame and also for reproach.”

The [ao]oracle concerning the (CF)beasts of the (CG)Negev.

Through a land of (CH)distress and anguish,
From [ap]where come lioness and lion, viper and (CI)flying fiery serpent,
They (CJ)carry their wealth on the [aq]backs of young donkeys
And their treasures on (CK)camels’ humps,
To a people who cannot profit them;
Even Egypt, whose (CL)help is vain and empty.
Therefore, I have called [ar]her
[as](CM)Rahab who has ceased.”
Now go, (CN)write it on a tablet before them
And inscribe it on a scroll,
That it may be in the time to come
[at]As a witness forever.
For this is a (CO)rebellious people, (CP)false sons,
Sons who are not willing to (CQ)listen
To the law of Yahweh,
10 Who say to the (CR)seers, “You must not see,”
And to those who have visions, “You must not (CS)behold visions for us of what is right,
(CT)Speak to us [au]pleasant words,
Behold visions of illusions.
11 Get out of the way, (CU)turn aside from the path,
[av](CV)Cease speaking before us about the Holy One of Israel.”

Galatians 3:23-4:31

23 But before faith came, we were held in custody under the Law, (A)being shut up for the coming faith to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our (B)tutor unto Christ, so that (C)we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a [a](D)tutor. 26 For you are all (E)sons of God through faith in (F)Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were (G)baptized into Christ have (H)clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 (I)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is no (J)male and female, for (K)you are all one in (L)Christ Jesus. 29 And if (M)you [b]belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s [c]seed, heirs according to (N)promise.

Sonship in Christ

Now I say, as long as the heir is a [d]child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is [e]owner of everything, but he is under guardians and stewards until the date set by the father. So also we, while we were children, were (O)enslaved under the [f](P)elemental things of the world. But when (Q)the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, (R)born of a woman, born (S)under [g]the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under [h]the Law, that we might receive the adoption as (T)sons. And because you are sons, (U)God sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “(V)Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and (W)if a son, then an heir [i]through God.

However at that time, (X)when you did not know God, you were (Y)slaves to (Z)those which by nature are no gods. But now, having known God, or rather having been (AA)known by God, (AB)how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless [j](AC)elemental things, to which you want to be enslaved all over again? 10 You (AD)observe days and months and seasons and years. 11 I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored [k]over you for nothing.

12 I beg of you, (AE)brothers, (AF)become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong. 13 But you know that it was because of a [l]bodily illness that I proclaimed the gospel to you the [m]first time; 14 and that which was a [n]trial to you in my [o]bodily condition you did not despise or [p]loathe, but (AG)you received me as an angel of God, as (AH)Christ Jesus Himself. 15 Where then is [q]that sense of blessing you had? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. 16 So have I become your enemy (AI)by [r]telling you the truth? 17 They zealously seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will zealously seek them. 18 But it is good always to be zealously sought in a commendable [s]manner, and (AJ)not only when I am present with you. 19 (AK)My children, with whom (AL)I am again in labor until (AM)Christ is formed in you— 20 but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, because (AN)I am perplexed about you.

An Allegory of Two Covenants

21 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not (AO)listen to the Law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, (AP)one by the servant-woman and (AQ)one by the free woman. 23 But (AR)the son by the servant-woman had been born according to the flesh, while (AS)the son by the free woman through the promise. 24 [t](AT)This is [u]spoken with allegory, for these women are two covenants: one from (AU)Mount Sinai bearing children into (AV)slavery; [v]she is Hagar. 25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But (AW)the Jerusalem above is free; [w]she is our mother. 27 For it is written,

(AX)Rejoice, barren woman who does not give birth;
Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor;
For more numerous are the children of the desolate one
Than of the one who has a husband.”

28 And you brothers, (AY)in accordance with Isaac, are (AZ)children of promise. 29 But as at that time (BA)he who was born according to the flesh (BB)was persecuting him who was born according to the Spirit, (BC)so it is now also. 30 But what does the Scripture say?

(BD)Cast out the servant-woman and her son,
For (BE)the son of the servant-woman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.”

31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant-woman, [x]but of the free woman.

Psalm 62

God Is a Refuge for Us

For the choir director. According to [a]Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

62 (A)Surely my soul waits in silence for God;
From Him (B)is my salvation.
Surely He is my (C)rock and my salvation,
My (D)stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

How long will you assail a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a (E)leaning wall, like a fence thrust down?
Surely they have counseled to thrust him down from his high position;
They (F)find pleasure in falsehood;
They (G)bless with [b]their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. [c]Selah.

Surely (H)wait in silence for God, O my soul,
For my hope is from Him.
Surely He is (I)my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
On God my (J)salvation and my glory rest;
The rock of my strength, my (K)refuge is in God.
(L)Trust in Him at all times, O people;
(M)Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Surely [d]men of (N)low degree are merely (O)vanity and [e]men of rank are a (P)lie;
In the (Q)balances they go up;
They are together lighter than a breath of vanity.
10 (R)Do not trust in oppression
And do not put vain hope in (S)robbery;
If riches increase, (T)do not set your heart upon them.

11 [f]Once God has (U)spoken;
[g]Twice I have heard this:
That (V)strength belongs to God;
12 And that (W)to You, O Lord, belongs lovingkindness,
For You (X)repay a man according to his work.

Proverbs 23:19-21

19 You, my son, listen and (A)be wise,
And (B)direct your heart in the way.
20 Do not be with (C)heavy drinkers of wine,
Or with (D)gluttonous eaters of meat;
21 For the (E)heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,
And (F)drowsiness will clothe them with rags.
