³⁹ And the spirit of the king^[a] longed to go out^[b] to Absalom, because ^(A)he was comforted about Amnon, since he was dead.

⁶⁷ Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was ^(A)comforted after his mother's ^(B)death.

¹² In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua's daughter, died. When Judah ^(A)was comforted, he went up to ^(B)Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

³⁵ All his sons and all his daughters ^(A)rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “No, ^(B)I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” ²² He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ^(C)‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ ²³ But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, ^(D)but he will not return to me.”

^32 (A)Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and fail with longing for them all day long, ^(B)but you shall be helpless.
