Psalm 81:1-10

Psalm 81[a]

For the music director, according to the gittith style;[b] by Asaph.

81 Shout for joy to God, our source of strength!
Shout out to the God of Jacob!
Sing[c] a song and play the tambourine,
the pleasant-sounding harp, and the ten-stringed instrument.
Sound the ram’s horn on the day of the new moon,[d]
and on the day of the full moon when our festival begins.[e]
For observing the festival is a requirement for Israel;[f]
it is an ordinance given by the God of Jacob.
He decreed it as a regulation in Joseph,
when he attacked the land of Egypt.[g]
I heard a voice I did not recognize.[h]
It said:[i] “I removed the burden from his shoulder;
his hands were released from holding the basket.[j]
In your distress you called out and I rescued you.
I answered you from a dark thundercloud.[k]
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.[l] (Selah)
I said,[m] ‘Listen, my people!
I will warn[n] you.
O Israel, if only you would obey me![o]
There must be[p] no other[q] god among you.
You must not worship a foreign god.
10 I am the Lord, your God,
the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.’

Leviticus 24:5-9

“You must take choice wheat flour[a] and bake twelve loaves;[b] there must be two-tenths of an ephah of flour in[c] each loaf, and you must set them in two rows, six in a row,[d] on the ceremonially pure table before the Lord. You must put pure frankincense[e] on each row,[f] and it will become a memorial portion[g] for the bread, a gift[h] to the Lord. Each Sabbath day[i] Aaron[j] must arrange it before the Lord continually; this portion[k] is from the Israelites as a perpetual covenant. It will belong to Aaron and his sons, and they must eat it in a holy place because it is most holy to him, a perpetually-allotted portion[l] from the gifts of the Lord.”

John 7:19-24

19 Hasn’t Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps[a] the law! Why do you want[b] to kill me?”

20 The crowd[c] answered, “You’re possessed by a demon![d] Who is trying to kill you?”[e] 21 Jesus replied,[f] “I performed one miracle[g] and you are all amazed.[h] 22 However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcision[i] (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male child[j] on the Sabbath. 23 But if a male child[k] is circumcised[l] on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken,[m] why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well[n] on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judge according to external appearance,[o] but judge with proper[p] judgment.”
