Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
נ (Nun)
105 Your word[a] is a lamp to walk by,
and a light to illumine my path.[b]
106 I have vowed and solemnly sworn
to keep your just regulations.
107 I am suffering terribly.
O Lord, revive me with your word.[c]
108 O Lord, please accept the freewill offerings of my praise.[d]
Teach me your regulations.
109 My life is in continual danger,[e]
but I do not forget your law.
110 The wicked lay a trap for me,
but I do not wander from your precepts.
111 I claim your rules as my permanent possession,
for they give me joy.[f]
112 I am determined to obey[g] your statutes
at all times, to the very end.
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;[a]
observe her[b] ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
overseer, or[c] ruler,
8 yet it would prepare[d] its food in the summer;
it gathered at the harvest what it will eat.[e]
9 How long, you sluggard, will you lie there?
When will you rise from your sleep?[f]
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to relax,[g]
11 and your poverty will come like a robber,[h]
and your need like an armed man.[i]
12 A worthless and wicked person[j]
walks around saying perverse things;[k] [l]
13 he winks with his eyes,
signals with his feet,
and points with his fingers;[m]
14 he plots evil with perverse thoughts[n] in his heart,
he spreads contention[o] at all times.
15 Therefore, his disaster will come suddenly;
in an instant[p] he will be broken, and there will be no remedy.
16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
even[q] seven[r] things that are an abomination to him:[s]
17 haughty eyes,[t] a lying tongue,[u]
and hands that shed innocent blood,[v]
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,[w]
feet that are swift to run[x] to evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies,[y]
and a person who spreads discord[z] among family members.[aa]
20 My child,[ab] guard the commands of your father
and do not forsake the instruction of your mother.
21 Bind them[ac] on your heart[ad] continually;
fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk about,[ae] they[af] will guide you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
when you wake up,[ag] they will talk[ah] to you.
23 For the commandments[ai] are like[aj] a lamp,[ak]
instruction is like a light,
and rebukes of discipline are like[al] the road leading to life,[am]
Jesus as the Light of the World
12 Then Jesus spoke out again,[a] “I am the light of the world![b] The one who follows me will never[c] walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees[d] objected,[e] “You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!”[f] 14 Jesus answered,[g] “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people[h] do not know where I came from or where I am going.[i] 15 You people[j] judge by outward appearances;[k] I do not judge anyone.[l] 16 But if I judge, my evaluation is accurate,[m] because I am not alone when I judge,[n] but I and the Father who sent me do so together.[o] 17 It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.[p] 18 I testify about myself[q] and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 Then they began asking[r] him, “Who is your father?” Jesus answered, “You do not know either me or my Father. If you knew me you would know my Father too.”[s] 20 (Jesus[t] spoke these words near the offering box[u] while he was teaching in the temple courts.[v] No one seized him because his time[w] had not yet come.)[x]
Where Jesus Came From and Where He is Going
21 Then Jesus[y] said to them again,[z] “I am going away, and you will look for me[aa] but will die in your sin.[ab] Where I am going you cannot come.” 22 So the Jewish leaders[ac] began to say,[ad] “Perhaps he is going to kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’” 23 Jesus replied,[ae] “You people[af] are from below; I am from above. You people are from this world; I am not from this world. 24 Thus I told you[ag] that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he,[ah] you will die in your sins.”
25 So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus replied,[ai] “What I have told you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge[aj] about you, but the Father[ak] who sent me is truthful,[al] and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world.”[am] 27 (They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.)[an]
28 Then Jesus said,[ao] “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he,[ap] and I do nothing on my own initiative,[aq] but I speak just what the Father taught me.[ar] 29 And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone,[as] because I always do those things that please him.” 30 While he was saying these things, many people[at] believed in him.
