Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
55 But Stephen,[a] full[b] of the Holy Spirit, looked intently[c] toward heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing[d] at the right hand of God. 56 “Look!” he said.[e] “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they covered their ears,[f] shouting out with a loud voice, and rushed at him with one intent. 58 When[g] they had driven him out of the city, they began to stone him,[h] and the witnesses laid their cloaks[i] at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 They[j] continued to stone Stephen while he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 Then he fell[k] to his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!”[l] When[m] he had said this, he died.[n]
Psalm 31[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
31 In you, O Lord, I have taken shelter.
Never let me be humiliated.
Vindicate me by rescuing me.[b]
2 Listen to me.[c]
Quickly deliver me.
Be my protector and refuge,[d]
a stronghold where I can be safe.[e]
3 For you are my high ridge[f] and my stronghold;
for the sake of your own reputation[g] you lead me and guide me.[h]
4 You will free me[i] from the net they hid for me,
for you are my place of refuge.
5 Into your hand I entrust my life;[j]
you will rescue[k] me, O Lord, the faithful God.
2 And[a] yearn[b] like newborn infants for pure, spiritual milk,[c] so that by it you may grow up to[d] salvation,[e] 3 if you have experienced[f] the Lord’s kindness.[g]
A Living Stone, a Chosen People
4 So as you come to him,[h] a living stone rejected by men but[i] chosen and precious[j] in God’s sight, 5 you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer[k] spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it says[l] in scripture, “Look, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone,[m] and whoever believes[n] in him[o] will never[p] be put to shame.”[q] 7 So you who believe see[r] his value,[s] but for those who do not believe, the stone that the builders rejected has become the[t] cornerstone,[u] 8 and a stumbling-stone[v] and a rock to trip over.[w] They stumble[x] because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.[y] 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues[z] of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 You[aa] once were not a people, but now you are God’s people. You were shown no mercy,[ab] but now you have received mercy.
Jesus’ Parting Words to His Disciples
14 “Do not let your hearts be distressed.[a] You believe in God;[b] believe also in me. 2 There are many dwelling places[c] in my Father’s house.[d] Otherwise, I would have told you, because[e] I am going away to make ready[f] a place for you.[g] 3 And if I go and make ready[h] a place for you, I will come again and take you[i] to be with me,[j] so that where I am you may be too. 4 And you know the way where I am going.”[k]
5 Thomas said,[l] “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus replied,[m] “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.[n] No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you have known me, you will know my Father too.[o] And from now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said,[p] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content.”[q] 9 Jesus replied,[r] “Have I been with you for so long, and you have not known[s] me, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father! How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?[t] The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative,[u] but the Father residing in me performs[v] his miraculous deeds.[w] 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, but if you do not believe me,[x] believe because of the miraculous deeds[y] themselves. 12 I tell you the solemn truth,[z] the person who believes in me will perform[aa] the miraculous deeds[ab] that I am doing,[ac] and will perform[ad] greater deeds[ae] than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name,[af] so that the Father may be glorified[ag] in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
