Psalm 51-53

Psalm 51[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba.[b]

51 Have mercy on me, O God, because of[c] your loyal love.
Because of[d] your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts.[e]
Wash away my wrongdoing.[f]
Cleanse me of my sin.[g]
For I am aware of[h] my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.[i]
Against you—you above all[j]—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So[k] you are just when you confront me;[l]
you are right when you condemn me.[m]
Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.[n]
Look,[o] you desire[p] integrity in the inner man;[q]
you want me to possess wisdom.[r]
Cleanse me[s] with hyssop[t] and I will be pure;[u]
wash me[v] and I will be whiter than snow.[w]
Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven.[x]
May the bones[y] you crushed rejoice.[z]
Hide your face[aa] from my sins.
Wipe away[ab] all my guilt.
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God.[ac]
Renew a resolute spirit within me.[ad]
11 Do not reject me.[ae]
Do not take your holy Spirit[af] away from me.[ag]
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance.
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey.[ah]
13 Then I will teach[ai] rebels your merciful ways,[aj]
and sinners will turn[ak] to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder,[al] O God, the God who delivers me.
Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your righteousness.[am]
15 O Lord, give me the words.[an]
Then my mouth will praise you.[ao]
16 Certainly[ap] you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it;[aq]
you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.[ar]
17 The sacrifice God desires is a humble spirit[as]
O God, a humble and repentant heart[at] you will not reject.[au]
18 Because you favor Zion, do what is good for her.[av]
Fortify[aw] the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will accept[ax] the proper sacrifices, burnt sacrifices and whole offerings;
then bulls will be sacrificed[ay] on your altar.[az]

Psalm 52[ba]

For the music director, a well-written song[bb] by David. It was written when Doeg the Edomite went and informed Saul: “David has arrived at the home of Ahimelech.”[bc]

52 Why do you boast about your evil plans,[bd] O powerful man?
God’s loyal love protects me all day long.[be]
Your tongue carries out your destructive plans;[bf]
it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver.[bg]
You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth.[bh] (Selah)
You love to use all the words that destroy,[bi]
and the tongue that deceives.
Yet[bj] God will make you a permanent heap of ruins.[bk]
He will scoop you up[bl] and remove you from your home;[bm]
he will uproot you from the land of the living. (Selah)
When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe,
and will mock the evildoer, saying:[bn]
“Look, here is the man who would not make[bo] God his protector.
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confident about his plans to destroy others.”[bp]
But I[bq] am like a flourishing[br] olive tree in the house of God;
I continually[bs] trust in God’s loyal love.
I will continually[bt] thank you when[bu] you execute judgment;[bv]
I will rely on[bw] you,[bx] for your loyal followers know you are good.[by]

Psalm 53[bz]

For the music director, according to the machalath style;[ca] a well-written song[cb] by David.

53 Fools say to themselves,[cc] “There is no God.”[cd]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[ce]
none of them does what is right.[cf]
God looks down from heaven[cg] at the human race,[ch]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[ci] and seeks God.[cj]
Everyone rejects God;[ck]
they are all morally corrupt.[cl]
None of them does what is right,[cm]
not even one!
All those who behave wickedly[cn] do not understand[co]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to God.
They are absolutely terrified,[cp]
even by things that do not normally cause fear.[cq]
For God annihilates[cr] those who attack you.[cs]
You are able to humiliate them because God has rejected them.[ct]
I wish the deliverance[cu] of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the well-being of his people,[cv]
may Jacob rejoice,[cw]
may Israel be happy![cx]

Romans 2

The Condemnation of the Moralist

[a] Therefore[b] you are without excuse,[c] whoever you are,[d] when you judge someone else.[e] For on whatever grounds[f] you judge another, you condemn yourself, because you who judge practice the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment is in accordance with truth[g] against those who practice such things. And do you think,[h] whoever you are, when you judge[i] those who practice such things and yet do them yourself,[j] that you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you have contempt for the wealth of his kindness, forbearance, and patience, and yet do not know[k] that God’s kindness leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness[l] and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourselves in the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment is revealed![m] He[n] will reward[o] each one according to his works:[p] eternal life to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honor and immortality, but[q] wrath and anger to those who live in selfish ambition[r] and do not obey the truth but follow[s] unrighteousness. There will be[t] affliction and distress on everyone[u] who does evil, on the Jew first and also the Greek,[v] 10 but[w] glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, for the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God. 12 For all who have sinned apart from the law[x] will also perish apart from the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous before God, but those who do the law will be declared righteous.[y] 14 For whenever the Gentiles,[z] who do not have the law, do by nature[aa] the things required by the law,[ab] these who do not have the law are a law to themselves. 15 They[ac] show that the work of the law is written[ad] in their hearts, as their conscience bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or else defend[ae] them,[af] 16 on the day when God will judge[ag] the secrets of human hearts,[ah] according to my gospel[ai] through Christ Jesus.

The Condemnation of the Jew

17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law[aj] and boast of your relationship to God[ak] 18 and know his will[al] and approve the superior things because you receive instruction from the law,[am] 19 and if you are convinced[an] that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an educator of the senseless, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the essential features of knowledge and of the truth— 21 therefore[ao] you who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who tell others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor[ap] idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by transgressing the law! 24 For just as it is written, “the name of God is being blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”[aq]

25 For circumcision[ar] has its value if you practice the law, but[as] if you break the law,[at] your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 Therefore if the uncircumcised man obeys[au] the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 And the physically uncircumcised man,[av] by keeping the law, will judge you to be the transgressor of the law, even though[aw] you have the letter[ax] and circumcision! 28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision something that is outward in the flesh, 29 but someone is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart[ay] by the Spirit[az] and not by the letter.[ba] This person’s[bb] praise is not from people but from God.
