Trespass by Deception and False Oath

(5:20)[a] Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[b] “When a person sins and commits a trespass[c] against the Lord by deceiving his fellow citizen[d] in regard to something held in trust, or a pledge, or something stolen, or by extorting something from his fellow citizen,[e] or has found something lost and denies it and swears falsely[f] concerning any one of the things that someone might do to sin[g] when it happens that he sins and he is found guilty[h] then he must return whatever he had stolen, or whatever he had extorted, or the thing that he had held in trust,[i] or the lost thing that he had found, or anything about which he swears falsely.[j] He must restore it in full[k] and add one-fifth to it; he must give it to its owner when he is found guilty.[l] Then he must bring his guilt offering to the Lord, a flawless ram from the flock, convertible into silver shekels,[m] for a guilt offering to the priest. So the priest will make atonement[n] on his behalf before the Lord and he will be forgiven[o] for whatever he has done to become guilty.”[p]

Sacrificial Instructions for the Priests: The Burnt Offering

(6:1)[q] Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[r] “Command Aaron and his sons, ‘This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering is to remain on the hearth[s] on the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar must be kept burning on it.[t] 10 Then the priest must put on his linen robe and must put linen leggings[u] over his bare flesh, and he must take up the fatty ashes of the burnt offering that the fire consumed on the altar,[v] and he must place them[w] beside the altar. 11 Then he must take off his clothes and put on other clothes, and he must bring the fatty ashes outside the camp to a ceremonially clean[x] place, 12 but the fire which is on the altar must be kept burning on it.[y] It must not be extinguished. So the priest must kindle wood on it morning by morning, and he must arrange the burnt offering on it and offer the fat of the peace offering up in smoke on it. 13 A continual fire must be kept burning on the altar. It must not be extinguished.

The Grain Offering of the Common Person

14 “‘This is the law of the grain offering. The sons of Aaron are to present it[z] before the Lord in front of the altar, 15 and the priest[aa] must take up with his hand some of the choice wheat flour of the grain offering[ab] and some of its olive oil, and all of the frankincense that is on the grain offering, and he must offer its memorial portion[ac] up in smoke on the altar[ad] as a soothing aroma to the Lord.[ae] 16 Aaron and his sons are to eat what is left over from it. It must be eaten unleavened in a holy place; they are to eat it in the courtyard of the Meeting Tent. 17 It must not be baked with yeast.[af] I have given it as their portion from my gifts. It is most holy,[ag] like the sin offering and the guilt offering. 18 Every male among the sons of Aaron may eat it. It is a perpetual allotted portion[ah] throughout your generations[ai] from the gifts of the Lord. Anyone who touches these gifts[aj] must be holy.’”[ak]

The Grain Offering of the Priests

19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[al] 20 “This is the offering of Aaron and his sons which they must present to the Lord on the day when he is anointed: a tenth of an ephah[am] of choice wheat flour[an] as a continual grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening. 21 It must be made with olive oil on a griddle and you must bring it well soaked,[ao] so you must present a grain offering of broken pieces[ap] as a soothing aroma to the Lord. 22 The high priest who succeeds him[aq] from among his sons must do it. It is a perpetual statute; it must be offered up in smoke as a whole offering to the Lord. 23 Every grain offering of a priest must be a whole offering; it must not be eaten.”

The Sin Offering

24 Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[ar] 25 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is the law of the sin offering. In the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered the sin offering must be slaughtered before the Lord. It is most holy.[as] 26 The priest who offers it for sin is to eat it. It must be eaten in a holy place, in the courtyard of the Meeting Tent. 27 Anyone who touches its meat must be holy, and whoever spatters some of its blood on a garment[at] must wash[au] whatever he spatters it on in a holy place. 28 Any clay vessel it is boiled in must be broken, and if it was boiled in a bronze vessel, then that vessel[av] must be rubbed out and rinsed in water. 29 Any male among the priests may eat it. It is most holy.[aw] 30 But any sin offering from which some of its blood is brought into the Meeting Tent to make atonement in the sanctuary must not be eaten. It must be burned up in the fire.[ax]

The Guilt Offering

“‘This is the law of the guilt offering. It is most holy. In the place where they slaughter the burnt offering they must slaughter the guilt offering, and the officiating priest[ay] must splash[az] the blood against the altar’s sides. Then the one making the offering[ba] must present all its fat: the fatty tail, the fat covering the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat on their sinews, and the protruding lobe on the liver (which he must remove along with the kidneys).[bb] Then the priest must offer them up in smoke on the altar[bc] as a gift to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. Any male among the priests may eat it. It must be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy.[bd] The law is the same for the sin offering and the guilt offering;[be] it belongs to the priest who makes atonement with it.

Priestly Portions of Burnt and Grain Offerings

“‘As for the priest who presents someone’s burnt offering, the hide of that burnt offering which he presented belongs to him. Every grain offering which is baked in the oven or[bf] made in the pan[bg] or on the griddle belongs to the priest who presented it. 10 Every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs to all the sons of Aaron, each one alike.[bh]

The Peace Offering

11 “‘This is the law of the peace-offering sacrifice which he[bi] is to present to the Lord. 12 If he presents it on account of thanksgiving,[bj] along with the thank-offering sacrifice he must present unleavened loaves mixed with olive oil, unleavened wafers smeared with olive oil,[bk] and well-soaked,[bl] ring-shaped loaves made of choice wheat flour[bm] mixed with olive oil. 13 He must present this grain offering[bn] in addition to ring-shaped loaves of leavened bread which regularly accompany[bo] the sacrifice of his thanksgiving peace offering. 14 He must present one of each kind of grain offering[bp] as a contribution offering[bq] to the Lord; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the peace offering. 15 The meat of his[br] thanksgiving peace offering must be eaten on the day of his offering; he must not set any of it aside until morning.

16 “‘If his offering is a votive or freewill sacrifice,[bs] it may be eaten on the day he presents his sacrifice, and also the leftovers from it may be eaten on the next day,[bt] 17 but the leftovers from the meat of the sacrifice must be burned up in the fire[bu] on the third day. 18 If some of the meat of his peace-offering sacrifice is ever eaten on the third day it will not be accepted; it will not be accounted to the one who presented it since it is spoiled,[bv] and the person who eats from it will bear his punishment for iniquity.[bw] 19 The meat which touches anything ceremonially unclean[bx] must not be eaten; it must be burned up in the fire. As for ceremonially clean meat,[by] everyone who is ceremonially clean may eat the meat. 20 The person who eats meat from the peace-offering sacrifice which belongs to the Lord while that person’s uncleanness persists[bz] will be cut off from his people.[ca] 21 When a person touches anything unclean (whether human uncleanness, or an unclean animal, or an unclean detestable creature)[cb] and eats some of the meat of the peace-offering sacrifice which belongs to the Lord, that person will be cut off from his people.’”[cc]

Sacrificial Instructions for the Common People: Fat and Blood

22 Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[cd] 23 “Tell the Israelites, ‘You must not eat any fat of an ox, sheep, or goat. 24 Moreover, the fat of an animal that has died of natural causes[ce] and the fat of an animal torn by beasts may be used for any other purpose,[cf] but you must certainly never eat it. 25 If anyone eats fat from the animal from which he presents a gift to the Lord, that person will be cut off from his people.[cg] 26 And you must not eat any blood of the birds or of the domesticated land animals in any of the places where you live.[ch] 27 Any person who eats any blood—that person will be cut off from his people.’”[ci]

Priestly Portions of Peace Offerings

28 Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[cj] 29 “Tell the Israelites, ‘The one who presents his peace-offering sacrifice to the Lord must bring part of his offering to the Lord as his sacrifice. 30 With his own hands he must bring the Lord’s gifts. He must bring the fat with the breast[ck] to wave the breast as a wave offering before the Lord,[cl] 31 and the priest must offer the fat up in smoke on the altar, but the breast will belong to Aaron and his sons. 32 The right thigh you must give as a contribution offering[cm] to the priest from your peace-offering sacrifice. 33 The one from Aaron’s sons who presents the blood of the peace offering and fat will have the right thigh as his share, 34 for the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution offering I have taken from the Israelites out of their peace-offering sacrifices and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the people of Israel as a perpetual allotted portion.’”[cn]

35 This is the allotment of Aaron and the allotment of his sons from the Lord’s gifts on the day Moses[co] presented them to serve as priests[cp] to the Lord. 36 This is what the Lord commanded to give to them from the Israelites on the day Moses[cq] anointed them[cr]—a perpetual allotted portion throughout their generations.[cs]

Summary of Sacrificial Regulations in Leviticus 6:8-7:36

37 This is the law[ct] for the burnt offering, the grain offering,[cu] the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering,[cv] and the peace-offering sacrifice, 38 which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to present their offerings to the Lord in the desert of Sinai.

Matthew 25:1-30

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five[a] of the virgins[b] were foolish, and five were wise. When[c] the foolish ones took their lamps, they did not take extra[d] olive oil[e] with them. But the wise ones took flasks of olive oil with their lamps. When[f] the bridegroom was delayed a long time, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is here! Come out to meet him.’ Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The[g] foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ ‘No,’ they replied.[h] ‘There won’t be enough for you and for us. Go instead to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 But while they had gone to buy it, the bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready went inside with him to the wedding banquet. Then[i] the door was shut. 11 Later,[j] the other virgins came too, saying, ‘Lord, lord! Let us in!’[k] 12 But he replied,[l] ‘I tell you the truth,[m] I do not know you!’ 13 Therefore stay alert, because you do not know the day or the hour.[n]

The Parable of the Talents

14 “For it is like a man going on a journey, who summoned his slaves[o] and entrusted his property to them. 15 To[p] one he gave five talents,[q] to another two, and to another one, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The one who had received five talents went off right away and put his money to work[r] and gained five more. 17 In the same way, the one who had two gained two more. 18 But the one who had received one talent went out and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money in it. 19 After[s] a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled his accounts with them. 20 The[t] one who had received the five talents came and brought five more, saying, ‘Sir,[u] you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 His master answered,[v] ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 The[w] one with the two talents also came and said, ‘Sir, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more.’ 23 His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 Then the one who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Sir, I knew that you were a hard man, harvesting where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed, 25 so[x] I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered,[y] ‘Evil and lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter? 27 Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers,[z] and on my return I would have received my money back with interest![aa] 28 Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten.[ab] 29 For the one who has will be given more,[ac] and he will have more than enough. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.[ad] 30 And throw that worthless slave into the outer darkness,[ae] where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
