Old/New Testament
Psalm 100[a]
A thanksgiving psalm.
100 Shout out praises to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Worship[b] the Lord with joy.
Enter his presence with joyful singing.
3 Acknowledge that the Lord is God.
He made us and we belong to him,[c]
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give him thanks.
Praise his name.
5 For the Lord is good.
His loyal love endures,[d]
and he is faithful through all generations.[e]
Psalm 101[f]
A psalm of David.
101 I will sing about loyalty and justice.
To you, O Lord, I will sing praises.
2 I will walk[g] in the way of integrity.
When will you come to me?
I will conduct my business with integrity in the midst of my palace.[h]
3 I will not even consider doing what is dishonest.[i]
I hate doing evil;[j]
I will have no part of it.[k]
4 I will have nothing to do with a perverse person;[l]
I will not permit[m] evil.
5 I will destroy anyone who slanders his neighbor in secret.
I will not tolerate anyone who has a haughty demeanor and an arrogant attitude.[n]
6 I will favor the honest people of the land,[o]
and allow them to live with me.[p]
Those who walk in the way of integrity will attend me.[q]
7 Deceitful people will not live in my palace.[r]
Liars will not be welcome in my presence.[s]
8 Each morning I will destroy all the wicked people in the land,
and remove all evildoers from the city of the Lord.
Psalm 102[t]
The prayer of an oppressed man, as he grows faint and pours out his lament before the Lord.
102 O Lord, hear my prayer.
Pay attention to my cry for help.[u]
2 Do not ignore me in my time of trouble.[v]
Listen to me.[w]
When I call out to you, quickly answer me.
3 For my days go up in smoke,[x]
and my bones are charred as in a fireplace.[y]
4 My heart is parched[z] and withered like grass,
for I am unable[aa] to eat food.[ab]
5 Because of the anxiety that makes me groan,
my bones protrude from my skin.[ac]
6 I am like an owl[ad] in the wilderness;
I am like a screech owl[ae] among the ruins.[af]
7 I stay awake;[ag]
I am like a solitary bird on a roof.
8 All day long my enemies taunt me;
those who mock me use my name in their curses.[ah]
9 For I eat ashes as if they were bread,[ai]
and mix my drink with my tears,[aj]
10 because of your anger and raging fury.
Indeed,[ak] you pick me up and throw me away.
11 My days are coming to an end,[al]
and I am withered like grass.
12 But you, O Lord, rule forever,[am]
and your reputation endures.[an]
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion.[ao]
For it is time to have mercy on her,
for the appointed time has come.
14 Indeed,[ap] your servants take delight in her stones,
and feel compassion for[aq] the dust of her ruins.[ar]
15 The nations will respect the reputation of the Lord,[as]
and all the kings of the earth will respect[at] his splendor,
16 when the Lord rebuilds Zion,
and reveals his splendor,
17 when he responds to the prayer of the destitute,[au]
and does not reject[av] their request.[aw]
18 The account of his intervention[ax] will be recorded for future generations;
people yet to be born[ay] will praise the Lord.
19 For he will look down from his sanctuary above;[az]
from heaven the Lord will look toward earth,[ba]
20 in order to hear the painful cries of the prisoners,
and to set free those condemned to die,[bb]
21 so they may proclaim the name of the Lord in Zion,
and praise him[bc] in Jerusalem,
22 when the nations gather together,
and the kingdoms pay tribute to the Lord.[bd]
23 He has taken away my strength in the middle of life;[be]
he has cut short my days.
24 I say, “O my God, please do not take me away in the middle of my life.[bf]
You endure through all generations.[bg]
25 In earlier times you established the earth;
the skies are your handiwork.
26 They will perish,
but you will endure.[bh]
They will wear out like a garment;
like clothes you will remove them and they will disappear.[bi]
27 But you remain;[bj]
your years do not come to an end.
28 The children of your servants will settle down here,
and their descendants[bk] will live securely in your presence.”[bl]
Salutation
1 From Paul,[a] called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus[b] by the will of God, and Sosthenes, our brother, 2 to the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.[c] 3 Grace and peace to you[d] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Thanksgiving
4 I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus. 5 For you were made rich[e] in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge[f]— 6 just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you— 7 so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation[g] of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He[h] will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Divisions in the Church
10 I urge you, brothers and sisters,[i] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together,[j] to end your divisions,[k] and to be united by the same mind and purpose.[l] 11 For members of Chloe’s household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters,[m] that there are quarrels[n] among you. 12 Now I mean this, that[o] each of you is saying, “I am with Paul,” or “I am with Apollos,” or “I am with Cephas,”[p] or “I am with Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Paul wasn’t crucified for you, was he?[q] Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul?[r] 14 I thank God[s] that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name! 16 (I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Otherwise, I do not remember whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—and not with clever speech, so that the cross of Christ would not become useless.[t]
The Message of the Cross
18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.”[u] 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law?[v] Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. 22 For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, 23 but we preach about a crucified Christ,[w] a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,[x] and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.[y]
26 Think about the circumstances of your call,[z] brothers and sisters.[aa] Not many were wise by human standards,[ab] not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position.[ac] 27 But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. 28 God chose[ad] what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, 29 so that no one can boast in his presence. 30 He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus,[ae] who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”[af]
