Stone Tablets like the Former Ones

34 Now Yahweh said to Moses, “Carve out for yourself (A)two stone tablets like the former ones, and (B)I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered. So be prepared by morning, and come up in the morning to (C)Mount Sinai, and [a]present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain. (D)And no man is to come up with you, nor let any man be seen [b]anywhere on the mountain; even the flocks and the herds may not graze in front of that mountain.” So he carved out (E)two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as Yahweh had commanded him, and he took two stone tablets in his hand. (F)Then Yahweh descended in the cloud and stood there with him, and [c]He called upon the name of Yahweh. Then Yahweh passed by in front of him and called out, “Yahweh, Yahweh God, (G)compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and [d]truth; who (H)keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin; yet He (I)will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, (J)visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” And Moses made haste [e](K)to bow low toward the earth and worship. And he said, “(L)If now I have found favor in Your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go along in our midst, even though [f](M)they are a stiff-necked people, and (N)pardon our iniquity and our sin, and (O)take us as Your own inheritance.”

Yahweh Cuts a Covenant with Israel

10 Then [g]God said, “Behold, (P)I am going to cut a covenant. Before all your people (Q)I will do wondrous deeds which have not been created in all the earth nor among any of the nations; and all the people [h]among whom you live will see the working of Yahweh, for it is a fearful thing that I am going to do with you.

11 [i]Be sure to keep what I am commanding you this day: behold, (R)I am going to drive out the Amorite before you, and the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 (S)Beware lest you cut a covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13 (T)But rather, you are to tear down their altars and shatter their sacred pillars and cut down their [j](U)Asherim 14 —for (V)you shall not worship any other god, for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God— 15 lest you cut a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and (W)sacrifice to their gods, and one of them (X)invite you [k]to eat of his sacrifice, 16 and (Y)you take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods. 17 (Z)You shall make for yourself no molten gods.

18 “You shall keep (AA)the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For (AB)seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, which I commanded you, at the appointed time in the (AC)month of Abib, for in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt.

19 (AD)The first offspring from every womb belongs to Me, even of all your male livestock, the first offspring from [l]cattle and sheep. 20 (AE)And you shall redeem with a lamb the [m]first offspring from a donkey; and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. You shall redeem (AF)all the firstborn of your sons. [n](AG)None shall appear before Me empty-handed.

21 “You shall work (AH)six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest. 22 And you shall celebrate (AI)the Feast of Weeks, that is, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. 23 (AJ)Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel. 24 For I will (AK)dispossess nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no man shall covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before Yahweh your God.

25 (AL)You shall not [o]offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread, (AM)and the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover shall not [p]be left over until morning.

26 “You shall bring (AN)the very first of the first fruits of your ground into the house of Yahweh your God.

“You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

27 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “(AO)Write [q]down these words, for in accordance with these words I have cut (AP)a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with Yahweh (AQ)forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And [r](AR)he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, (AS)the Ten [s]Commandments.

The Shining Face of Moses

29 Now it happened when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the (AT)two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that (AU)the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him. 30 Then Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and (AV)they were afraid to come near him. 31 Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers in the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them. 32 And afterward all the sons of Israel came near, and he commanded them everything that Yahweh had spoken [t]to him on Mount Sinai. 33 Then Moses finished speaking with them and (AW)put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever Moses went in before Yahweh to speak with Him, (AX)he would take off the veil until he came out; and then he would come out and speak to the sons of Israel what he had been commanded, 35 (AY)and the sons of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone. So Moses would return the veil over his face until he went in to speak with Him.

The Sabbath Command

35 Then Moses assembled all the congregation of the sons of Israel and said to them, “(AZ)These are the things that Yahweh has commanded you to [u]do:

(BA)Six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy day, (BB)a sabbath of complete rest to Yahweh; (BC)whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. (BD)You shall not kindle a fire in any of your places of habitation on the sabbath day.”

Willing Hearts Contribute to Yahweh

And Moses spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded, saying, (BE)Take from among you a [v]contribution to Yahweh; whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it as a [w]contribution to Yahweh: gold, silver, and [x]bronze, and [y]blue, purple, and scarlet material, fine linen, goats’ hair, and rams’ skins [z]dyed red, and porpoise skins, and acacia wood, and oil for lighting, and spices for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense, and onyx stones and setting stones for the ephod and for the [aa]breastpiece.

10 (BF)And let everyone [ab]wise at heart among you come and make all that Yahweh has commanded: 11 the [ac](BG)tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its clasps and its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its bases; 12 the (BH)ark and its poles, the [ad]mercy seat, and the curtain of the screen; 13 the (BI)table and its poles, and all its [ae]utensils, and the bread of the [af]Presence; 14 the (BJ)lampstand also for the light and its utensils and its lamps and the oil for the light; 15 and the (BK)altar of incense and its poles, and the (BL)anointing oil and the (BM)fragrant incense, and the screen for the doorway at the [ag]entrance of the tabernacle; 16 (BN)the altar of burnt offering with its [ah]bronze grating, its poles, and all its [ai]utensils, the laver and its stand; 17 (BO)the hangings of the court, its pillars and its bases, and the screen for the gate of the court; 18 the pegs of the tabernacle and the pegs of the court and their cords; 19 the [aj](BP)woven garments for ministering in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to minister as priests.’”

Contributions Brought by the People

20 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel went out from Moses’ presence. 21 (BQ)And everyone whose heart [ak]stirred him and everyone whose spirit was willing came and brought the [al]contribution to Yahweh for the work of the tent of meeting and for all its service and for the holy garments. 22 Then all whose hearts were willing, both men and women, came and brought brooches and [am]earrings and signet rings and bracelets, all articles of gold; so did every man who waved it as a wave offering of gold to Yahweh. 23 And every man, [an]who had in his possession [ao]blue and purple and scarlet material and fine linen and goats’ hair and rams’ skins [ap]dyed red and porpoise skins, brought them. 24 Everyone who could raise up a [aq]contribution of silver and [ar]bronze brought the [as]contribution to Yahweh; and every man [at]who had in his possession acacia wood for any work of the service brought it. 25 All the women [au]wise at heart spun with their hands and brought what they had spun, in [av]blue and purple and scarlet material and in fine linen. 26 And all the women whose heart [aw]stirred with wisdom spun the goats’ hair. 27 And the rulers brought the onyx stones and the stones for setting for the ephod and for the [ax]breastpiece; 28 and (BR)the spice and the oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense. 29 The sons of Israel—all the men and women whose heart was willing to bring material for all the work, which Yahweh had commanded through the hand of Moses to do—brought a (BS)freewill offering to Yahweh.

30 (BT)Then Moses said to the sons of Israel, “See, Yahweh has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 31 And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in discernment, and in knowledge, and in all [ay]craftsmanship; 32 to devise [az]designs for working in gold and in silver and in [ba]bronze, 33 and in the cutting of stones for settings and in the carving of wood, so as to do well in every work of thoughtful design. 34 He also has put in his heart to teach, both he and (BU)Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35 (BV)He has filled them with [bb]wisdom in their heart to do every work of an engraver and of a designer and of an embroiderer, in [bc]blue and in purple and in scarlet material and in fine linen, and of a weaver, as those who do every work and make designs.

Matthew 22:23-46

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

23 (A)On that day some (B)Sadducees (who say (C)there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and asked Him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘(D)If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife and raise up a seed for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers with us; and the first married and died, and having no [a]seed, he left his wife to his brother; 26 so also the second, and the third, down to the seventh. 27 And last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her.”

29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, (E)not [b]understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither (F)marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 (G)I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” 33 And when the crowds heard this, (H)they were astonished at His teaching.

The Foremost Commandment

34 (I)But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced (J)the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35 And one of them, (K)a scholar of the Law, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘(L)You shall love the [c]Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and [d]foremost commandment. 39 And the second is like it, ‘(M)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 (N)On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”

41 (O)Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about [e]the Christ, whose son is He?” They *said to Him, “(P)The son of David.” 43 He *said to them, “Then how does David [f](Q)in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,

44 (R)The [g]Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”’?

45 Therefore, if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” 46 (S)And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him [h]another question.
