Chapter 2
The Wedding at Cana. 1 [a]On the third day there was a wedding[b] in Cana[c] in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.(A) 2 Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 [d][And] Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.”(B) 5 His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”(C) 6 [e]Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,(D) each holding twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”[f] So they took it. 9 And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs[g] in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.(E)
12 [h]After this, he and his mother, [his] brothers, and his disciples went down to Capernaum and stayed there only a few days.[i]
Cleansing of the Temple. 13 [j]Since the Passover[k] of the Jews was near,(F) Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 [l]He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,[m] as well as the money-changers seated there.(G) 15 He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, 16 and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”(H) 17 [n]His disciples recalled the words of scripture,(I) “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?”(J) 19 Jesus answered and said to them,[o](K) “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,[p] and you will raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.(L)
23 While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing.(M) 24 But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, 25 and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.(N)
Chapter 3
Nicodemus.[q] 1 (O)Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.[r] 2 He came to Jesus at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him.”(P) 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born[s] from above.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he?”(Q) 5 Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.(R) 6 What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit.(S) 7 Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’ 8 The wind[t] blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”(T) 9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can this happen?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? 11 Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony.(U) 12 If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?(V) 13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.(W) 14 And just as Moses lifted up[u] the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,(X) 15 [v]so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”
16 For God so loved the world that he gave[w] his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.(Y) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn[x] the world, but that the world might be saved through him.(Z) 18 Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.(AA) 19 [y]And this is the verdict,(AB) that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed.(AC) 21 But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.(AD)
Final Witness of the Baptist. 22 [z]After this, Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing.(AE) 23 John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim,[aa] because there was an abundance of water there, and people came to be baptized, 24 [ab](AF)for John had not yet been imprisoned. 25 Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew[ac] about ceremonial washings. 26 So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.”(AG) 27 John answered and said, “No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven.(AH) 28 You yourselves can testify that I said [that] I am not the Messiah, but that I was sent before him.(AI) 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man,[ad] who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete.(AJ) 30 He must increase; I must decrease.”(AK)
The One from Heaven.[ae] 31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven [is above all].(AL) 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.(AM) 33 Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy.(AN) 34 For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift[af] of the Spirit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him.(AO) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.(AP)
