M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
39 1 Joseph sold to Potiphar. 2 God prospereth him. 7 Potiphar’s wife tempteth him. 13, 20 He is accused and cast in prison. 23 God showeth him favor.
1 Now Joseph was brought down into Egypt: and Potiphar [a]an Eunuch of Pharaoh’s (and his chief steward an Egyptian) bought him at the hand of the Ishmaelites, which had brought him thither.
2 And the [b]Lord was with Joseph, and he was a man that prospered and was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him: and made him [c]ruler of his house, and put all that he had in his hand.
5 And from that time that he had made him ruler over his house and over all that he had, the Lord [d]blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake: and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 Therefore he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, [e]and took account of nothing, that was with him, save only of the bread, which he did eat. And Joseph was a fair person, and well favored.
7 Now therefore after these things, his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, [f]Lie with me.
8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what he hath in the house with me, but hath committed all that he had to mine hand.
9 There is no man greater in this house than I: neither hath he kept anything from me, but only thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness and so sin against [g]God?
10 And albeit she spake to Joseph day by day, yet he hearkened not unto her, to lie with her, or to be in her company.
11 Then on a certain day Joseph entered into the house to do his business: and there was no man of the household in the house.
12 Therefore she caught him by his garment, saying, Sleep with me: but he left his garment in her hand and fled, and got him out.
13 Now when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled out,
14 She called unto the men of her house, and told them, saying, Behold, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us [h]to mock us: who came in to me for to have slept with me: but I [i]cried with a loud voice.
15 And when he heard that I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garments with me, and fled away, and got him out.
16 So she laid up his garment by her, until her lord came home.
17 Then she told him [j]according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came into me, to mock me.
18 But as soon as I lift up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19 Then when his master heard the words of his wife, which she told him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me, his anger was kindled.
20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him in [k][l]prison, in the place, where the king’s prisoners lay bound: and there he was in prison.
21 ¶ But the Lord was with Joseph, and [m]showed him mercy, and got him favor in the sight of the [n]master of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison, and [o]whatsoever they did there, that did he.
23 And the keeper of the prison looked unto nothing that was under his hand, seeing that the Lord was with him: for whatsoever he did, the Lord made it to prosper.
9 2 Christ’s transfiguration. 7 Christ must be heard. 11 Of Elias and John Baptist. 14 The possessed healed. 23 Faith can do all things. 31 Christ foretelleth his death. 33 Who is greatest among the Apostles. 36 Christ taketh a child in his arms. 42 To offend. 50 Salt. Peace.
1 And (A)he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death till they have seen the [a]kingdom of God come with power.
2 (B)[b]And six days after, Jesus taketh unto him Peter, and James, and John, and carrieth them up into an high mountain out of the way alone, and his shape was changed before them.
3 And his raiment did [c]shine, and was very white as snow, so white as no fuller can make upon the earth.
4 And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
5 Then Peter answered, and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: let us make also three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
6 Yet he knew not what he said: for they were [d]afraid.
7 And there was a cloud that shadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, (C)This is my beloved Son: hear him.
8 And suddenly they looked round about, and saw no more any man save Jesus only with them.
9 (D)[e]And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them, that they should tell no man what they had seen, save when the Son of man were risen from the dead again.
10 So they [f]kept that matter to themselves, and [g]demanded one of another, what the rising from the dead again should mean.
11 [h]Also they asked him, saying, Why say the Scribes, that (E)Elijah must first come?
12 And he answered, and said unto them, Elijah verily shall first come, and restore all things: and (F)as it is written of the Son of man, he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.
13 But I say unto you, that Elijah is come, (and they have done unto him whatsoever they would) as it is written of him.
14 ¶ (G)[i]And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the Scribes disputing with them.
15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were amazed, and ran to him, and saluted him.
16 Then he asked the Scribes, What dispute you among yourselves?
17 And one of the company answered, and said, Master, I have brought my son unto thee, which hath a dumb spirit:
18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he [j]teareth him, and he foameth, and gnasheth his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples, that they should cast him out, and they could not.
19 Then he answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long now shall I be with you! how long now shall I suffer you! Bring him unto me.
20 So they brought him unto him: and as soon as the spirit [k]saw him, he tare him, and he fell down on the ground wallowing and foaming.
21 Then he asked his father, How long time is it since he hath been thus? And he said, Of a child.
22 And oft times he casteth him into the fire, and into the water to destroy him: but if thou canst do anything, help us, and have compassion upon us.
23 And Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe it, [l]all things are possible to him that believeth.
24 And straightway the father of the child crying with tears, said, Lord, I believe: help my unbelief.
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26 [m]Then the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out, and he was as one dead, insomuch that many said, He is dead.
27 But Jesus took his hand, and lifted him up, and he arose.
28 [n]And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him secretly, Why could not we cast him out?
29 And he said unto them, This kind can by no other means come forth, but by prayer and fasting.
30 ¶ (H)And they departed thence, and [o]went together through Galilee, and he would not that any should have known it.
31 [p]For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him, but after that he is killed, he shall rise again the third day.
32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
33 (I)[q]After, he came to Capernaum: and when he was in the [r]house, he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among you by the way?
34 And they held their peace: for by the way they reasoned among themselves, who should be the chiefest.
35 And he sat down and called the twelve, and said to them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant unto all.
36 And he took a little child, and set him in the midst of them, and took him in his arms, and said unto them,
37 Whosoever shall receive one of such little children in my Name, receiveth me: and whosoever receiveth me, receiveth not [s]me, but him that sent me.
38 ¶ (J)[t]Then John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils by thy Name, which followeth not us, and we forbade him, because he followeth us not.
39 ¶ (K)But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man that can do a miracle by my Name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For whosoever is not against us, is on our part.
41 (L)And whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink for my Name’s sake, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
42 (M)[u]And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones, that believe in me, it were better for him rather, that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were cast into the sea.
43 (N)Wherefore if thine hand cause thee to offend, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life, maimed, than having two hands, to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched,
44 (O)Where their [v]worm dieth not, and the fire never goeth out.
45 Likewise, if thy foot cause thee to offend, cut it off: it is better for thee to go halt into life, than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched,
46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire never goeth out.
47 And if thine eye cause thee to offend, pluck it out: it is better for thee to go into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire,
48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire never goeth out.
49 [w]For every man shall be [x]salted with fire: and (P)every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
50 (Q)Salt is good: but if the salt be unsavory, wherewith shall it be seasoned? have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
5 1, 2 Eliphaz showeth the difference between the children of God and the wicked. 3 The fall of the wicked. 9 God’s power who destroyeth the wicked, and delivereth his.
1 Call now, if any will [a]answer thee, and to which of the Saints wilt thou turn?
2 Doubtless [b]anger killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the idiot.
3 I have seen the [c]foolish well rooted, and suddenly I [d]cursed his habitation, saying,
4 His [e]children shall be far from salvation, and they shall be destroyed in the [f]gate, and none shall deliver them.
5 The hungry shall eat up his harvest: yea, they shall take it from among the [g]thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.
6 For misery cometh not forth of the dust, [h]neither doeth affliction spring out of the earth.
7 But man is born unto [i]travail, as the sparks fly upward.
8 But I would inquire at [j]God, and turn my talk unto God:
9 Which [k]doeth great things, and unsearchable, and marvelous things without number.
10 He [l]giveth rain upon the earth, and poureth water upon the streets,
11 And setteth up on high them that be low, that the sorrowful may be exalted to salvation.
12 He scattereth the devices of the crafty: so that their hands cannot accomplish that which they do enterprise.
13 (A)He taketh the wise in their craftiness, and the counsel of the wicked is made foolish.
14 They meet with [m]darkness in the daytime, and [n]grope at noonday, as in the night.
15 But he saveth the [o]poor from the sword, from their [p]mouth, and from the hand of the violent man,
16 So that the poor hath his hope, but iniquity shall [q]stop her mouth.
17 Behold, blessed is the man whom God correcteth: therefore refuse not thou the chastising of the Almighty.
18 For he maketh the wound, and bindeth it up: he smiteth, and his hands make whole.
19 He shall deliver thee in [r]six troubles, and in the seventh the evil shall not touch thee.
20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in battle from the power of the sword.
21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue, and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 But thou shalt [s]laugh at destruction and dearth, and shalt not be afraid of the beast of the earth.
23 For the stones of the field [t]shall be in league with thee, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 And thou shalt know, that peace shall be in thy tabernacle, and thou shalt visit thine habitation, and shalt not [u]sin.
25 Thou shalt perceive also that thy seed shall be great, and thy posterity as the grass of the earth.
26 Thou shalt go to thy grave in [v]a full age, as a rick of corn cometh in due season into the barn.
27 Lo, [w]thus have we inquired of it, and so it is: hear this and know it for thyself.
9 1 He answereth an objection, that might be brought on the Jews’ behalf, 7 and telleth of two sorts of Abraham’s children, 15 and that God worketh all things in this matter according to his will, 20 even as the potter doth. 24, 30 He proveth as well the calling of the Gentiles, 31 as also the rejecting of the Jews, 25, 27 by the testimony of the Prophets.
1 I say [a]the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing me witness in the holy Ghost,
2 That I have great heaviness, and continual sorrow in mine heart.
3 For I would wish myself to be [b]separate from Christ, for my brethren that are my kinsmen according to the [c]flesh,
4 Which are the Israelites, to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the [d]glory, and the (A)[e]Covenants, and the giving of the [f]Law, and the [g]service of God, and the [h]promises.
5 Of whom are the fathers, and of whom concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is [i]God over all, blessed forever, Amen.
6 (B)[j]Notwithstanding it cannot be that the word of God should take none effect: for all they are not [k]Israel, which are of Israel:
7 Neither are they all children, because they are the seed of Abraham: (C)[l]but, In [m]Isaac shall thy seed be called:
8 [n]That is, they which are the children of the [o]flesh, are not the children of God: but the (D)children of the [p]promise, are counted for the seed.
9 [q]For this is a word of promise, (E)In this same time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.
10 [r]Neither he only felt this, but also (F)Rebecca, when she had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac.
11 For ere the children were born, and when they had neither done good nor evil (that the [s]purpose of God might [t]remain according to election, not by works, but by him that calleth.)
12 [u]It was said unto her, (G)The Elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, (H)I have loved Jacob, and have hated Esau.
14 [v]What shall we say then? Is there [w]unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 [x]For he saith to Moses, (I)I will [y]have mercy on him, to whom I will show mercy: and will have [z]compassion on him, on who I will have compassion.
16 [aa]So then it is not in him that [ab]willeth, nor in him that runneth, but in God that showeth mercy.
17 [ac]For the [ad]Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, (J)For this same purpose have [ae]I stirred thee up, that I might [af]show my power in thee, and that my Name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 [ag]Therefore he hath mercy on whom he [ah]will, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 [ai]Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet complain? for who hath resisted his will?
20 [aj]But, O man, who art thou which pleadest against God? [ak]shall the (K)thing [al]formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 (L)[am]Hath not the potter power of the clay to make of the same lump one [an]vessel to [ao]honor, and another unto [ap]dishonor?
22 [aq]What and if God would, to show his wrath, and to make his power known, suffer with long patience the [ar]vessels of wrath, prepared to [as]destruction?
23 And that he might declare the [at]riches of his glory upon the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory?
24 [au]Even us whom he hath called, not of the [av]Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.
25 [aw]As he saith also in Hosea, (M)I will call them, My people, which were not my people: and her, Beloved, which was not beloved.
26 And it shall be in the place where it was said unto them, (N)Ye are not my people, that there they shall be called, The children of the living God.
27 [ax]Also Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, (O)Though the number of the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saved.
28 For he will make his account, and gather it into a [ay]short sum with righteousness: for the Lord will make a short count in the earth.
29 (P)And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of [az]hosts had left us a [ba]seed, we had been made as Sodom, and had been like to Gomorrah.
30 [bb]What shall we say then? That the Gentiles which followed [bc]not righteousness, have attained unto righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31 [bd]But Israel which followed the Law of righteousness, could not attain unto the Law of righteousness.
32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the [be]works of the Law: for they have stumbled at the stumbling stone,
33 As it is written, (Q)Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone, and a rock to make men fall: and everyone that believeth in him, shall not be ashamed.
