Chapter 21

Regulations for Priests. The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: ‘No one shall become unclean by touching a dead person[a] except for a close relative, his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother, or his unmarried sister, who is near to him, for she has no husband. For these he can become unclean. But he is not to become unclean for people related by marriage, becoming unclean for them.

“ ‘Priests must not shave their heads bald nor trim their beards nor shall they cut their flesh.[b] They shall be holy to their God, and they are not to profane the name of their God, for they present offerings made by fire to the Lord, the food of their God. Therefore, they will be holy. They are not to marry a prostitute or a woman who has been defiled, nor are they to marry a woman who has been divorced by her husband, for he is holy to his God.[c] You shall therefore consecrate him, for he offers the bread of your God. He will be holy to you, for I, the Lord, who sanctify you, am holy.

“ ‘If the daughter of any priest defiles herself by playing the whore, thus defiling her father, then she is to be burned with fire.

10 “ ‘The priest who is the most important from among his brothers, upon whose head was poured the oil of anointing, and who was consecrated to wear the garments, he is not to uncover his head or rend his garments 11 nor shall he make himself unclean by touching any dead body, even that of his own father or mother. 12 He shall not leave the sanctuary nor desecrate the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the oil of anointing of his God is on him. I am the Lord. 13 He shall marry a woman who is a virgin. 14 He shall not marry a widow or a divorced woman or a woman who has defiled herself by fornication. Rather, he is to marry a virgin from his own people 15 so that he not profane his posterity among his people. I am the Lord, who sanctifies him.’ ”

16 Priestly Defects. The Lord spoke to Moses saying, 17 “Speak to Aaron saying: ‘Any of your descendants who has a defect is not to draw near to offer the bread of his God. 18 No one who has a defect shall approach, whether he be blind or lame, disfigured or deformed, 19 or if he has a crippled foot or hand, 20 or if he be hunchbacked or dwarfed, or if he has an eye defect, or a scab or sore or damaged testicles. 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect shall draw near to present offerings made by fire to the Lord. He who has a blemish shall not come to offer the bread of his God 22 for the bread of his God is most holy. He can eat what is holy, 23 but he shall not enter inside the veil[d] or approach the altar because of his defect, lest he defile the sanctuary. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.’ ”

24 Moses said this to Aaron and to his sons and to all of the children of Israel.

Psalm 26-27

Psalm 26[a]

Prayer for the Righteous

Of David.

Lord, come to my defense,
    for I have lived a blameless life.
I have placed my trust in the Lord,
    and never have I wavered in that regard.
Test me, O Lord, and try me;
    probe my heart and my mind.
For your kindness[b] is before my eyes,
    and I am constantly guided by your truth.
I do not sit in the company of deceivers,
    nor do I associate with hypocrites.
I abhor the assembly of the wicked,
    and I refuse to associate with evildoers.
I wash my hands in innocence[c]
    and join the procession around your altar, O Lord,
giving voice to your praises
    and proclaiming all your wondrous deeds.[d]
I love the house where you dwell, O Lord,
    the place where your glory resides.[e]
Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,
    nor my life with those who thirst for blood,[f]
10 whose hands carry out evil schemes,
    and whose right hands are full of bribes.
11 Rather, I choose to walk in innocence;
    redeem me and be merciful to me.
12 My feet stand on level ground;[g]
    in the full assembly I will bless the Lord.

Psalm 27[h]

Trust in God, Our Light and Salvation

Of David.

The Lord is my light[i] and my salvation;
    whom should I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom should I be afraid?
When evildoers close in on me
    to devour my flesh,[j]
it is they, my adversaries and enemies,
    who stumble and fall.
Even if an army encamps against me,
    my heart[k] will not succumb to fear;
even if war breaks out against me,
    I will not have my trust shaken.
There is only one thing I ask of the Lord,
    just one thing I seek:
to dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
so that I may enjoy the beauty of the Lord[l]
    and gaze on his temple.
For he will hide me in his shelter
    in times of trouble.
He will conceal me under the cover of his tent[m]
    and place me high upon a rock.
Even now my head is raised high
    above my enemies who surround me.
In his tent I will offer sacrifices[n] with joyous shouts;
    I will sing and chant praise to the Lord.
Lord, hear my voice when I cry out;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart[o] says of you,
    “Seek his face.”
It is your face, O Lord, that I seek;
    do not hide your face[p] from me.
Do not turn away your servant in anger,
    you who have been my help.
Do not reject or forsake me,
    O God, my Savior.
10 Even if my father and mother abandon me,
    the Lord will gather me up.[q]
11 Teach me your way,[r]Lord,
    and lead me along a level path
    because of my enemies.
12 Do not abandon me to the will of my adversaries,
    for lying witnesses have risen against me,
    breathing forth violence in their malice.
13 I am confident that I will behold the goodness of the Lord[s]
    in the land of the living.
14 Place your hope in the Lord:
    be strong and courageous in your heart,
    and place your hope in the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 4

Chapter 4

The Victor and the Tyrant. Then I contemplated all the acts of oppression that are committed under the sun:

I saw the tears of the oppressed,
    with no one present to comfort them.
Power was wielded by their oppressors,
    and no one was there to comfort them.
As a result, I regarded the dead as fortunate,
    because they had already died
and thus were happier than the living
    who were still alive.
But happier than both of these
    is the one yet unborn
who has not witnessed the evil deeds
    that are done under the sun.

Concurrence of Toil and Envy.[a] Then I came to realize that all toil and skill in work derive from one person’s envy of another. This also is vanity and a chase after the wind.

The fool folds his arms
    and consumes his own flesh.[b]
Better is one handful with peace of mind
    than two handfuls with toil
    and a chase after the wind.

Union Builds Strength. Again I observed vanity under the sun:

There was a solitary individual,
    without a friend, with neither a son nor a brother.
Yet there was no end to his toil,
    and wealth did not satisfy his greed.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
    “and depriving myself of pleasures?”
This also is vanity
    and a worthless task.
Two are better than one:
    they earn a far greater reward for their toil.
10 And if one should fall,
    his companion will help him up.
How pathetic is the man who is alone and falls
    and has no one to assist him to his feet.
11 In the same way, if two sleep together, they keep warm,
    but how can one who sleeps by himself keep warm?
12 And where a single man can be overcome,
    two together will be able to resist.
A cord with three strands is not easily broken.

13 Deception of Political Regimes.[c] Better is a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king who will no longer take advice. 14 One can emerge from prison to be crowned as a king, even though he was born in poverty in that kingdom.

15 And I observed all those who live and move under the sun willingly give their support to that young man who succeeded the king.[d] 16 There was a mass of people beyond counting over whom he reigned. And yet those who succeed him will not venerate his memory. This also is vanity and a chase after the wind.

17 The Religious Illusion. Be circumspect when you visit the house of God. Drawing near to listen is far better than the offering of a sacrifice by fools, for fools do not know how to avoid doing wrong.

1 Timothy 6

Chapter 6

Slaves.[a] All those who are under the yoke of slavery must regard their masters as worthy of complete respect, so that the name of God and our teaching may not be brought into disrepute. Those whose masters are believers must not despise them because they are brethren. On the contrary, they should serve them more, since those who receive the benefits of their services are believers and beloved brethren.

Final Charge[b]

False Teaching about Wealth. These are the things you should teach and recommend. Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the wholesome instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the godly teaching is a conceited person who understands nothing and who has an unhealthy enthusiasm to engage in arguments and to dispute the meaning of words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, and unending disputes among people whose minds are corrupted and who are deprived of truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain.

Godliness produces great gain, but only to those who are content. For we brought nothing into this world, and we can take nothing out. If we have food and clothing, let us be content with these.

However, those who want riches fall into temptations and are trapped into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 10 The love of money is the root of all evils, and in their desire for it some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many serious wounds.[c]

11 Fight the Good Fight. But as for you, man of God,[d] you must shun all this. Rather, pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, fortitude, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your noble confession[e] of faith in the presence of many witnesses.

13 In the sight of God, who gave life to all things, and before Jesus Christ, who himself made that noble confession of faith in his testimony before Pontius Pilate, I charge you 14 to obey the commands of God without fault or failure until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will make manifest at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only ruler of all, the King of kings and the Lord of lords. 16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has seen him or is able to do so. To him be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

17 Right Use of Riches.[f] Instruct those who are rich in this world’s goods that they should not be proud, nor should they trust in the uncertainty of riches but rather in God who richly provides us with everything we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to do good and to be rich in good works, to be generous in giving and ready to share. 19 In this way, they will acquire the treasure of a good foundation for the future so that they will be able to grasp the life that is true life.

Conclusion[g]

20 Admonition to Timothy. My brother Timothy, guard carefully what has been entrusted to you.[h] Avoid the profane chatter and the contradictions of what is wrongly considered to be knowledge. 21 By professing it some people have strayed far from the faith.

Farewell. Grace be with all of you.[i]
