Leviticus 19

Religious and Social Regulations

19 The Lord spoke to Moses: “Speak to the whole congregation of the Israelites and tell them, ‘You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. Each of you must respect his mother and his father,[a] and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God. Do not turn to idols,[b] and you must not make for yourselves gods of cast metal. I am the Lord your God.

Eating the Peace Offering

“‘When you sacrifice a peace-offering sacrifice to the Lord, you must sacrifice it so that it is accepted for you.[c] It must be eaten on the day of your sacrifice and on the following day,[d] but what is left over until the third day must be burned up.[e] If, however, it is eaten[f] on the third day, it is spoiled;[g] it will not be accepted, and the one who eats it will bear his punishment for iniquity[h] because he has profaned[i] what is holy to the Lord.[j] That person will be cut off from his people.[k]

Leaving the Gleanings

“‘When you gather in the harvest[l] of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field,[m] and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest. 10 You must not pick your vineyard bare,[n] and you must not gather up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You must leave them for the poor and the resident foreigner.[o] I am the Lord your God.

Dealing Honestly

11 “‘You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen.[p] 12 You must not swear falsely[q] in my name, so that you do not profane[r] the name of your God. I am the Lord. 13 You must not oppress your neighbor or commit robbery against your neighbor.[s] You must not withhold[t] the wages of the hired laborer overnight until morning. 14 You must not curse a deaf person or put a stumbling block in front of a blind person.[u] You must fear[v] your God; I am the Lord.

Justice, Love, and Propriety

15 “‘You[w] must not deal unjustly in judgment:[x] You must neither show partiality to the poor nor honor the rich.[y] You must judge your fellow citizen fairly.[z] 16 You must not go about as a slanderer among your people.[aa] You must not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is at stake.[ab] I am the Lord. 17 You must not hate your brother in your heart. You must surely reprove your fellow citizen so that you do not incur sin on account of him.[ac] 18 You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge against[ad] any of your people,[ae] but you must love your neighbor as yourself.[af] I am the Lord. 19 You must keep my statutes. You must not allow two different kinds of your animals to breed together,[ag] you must not sow your field with two different kinds of seed, and you must not wear[ah] a garment made of two different kinds of material.[ai]

Lying with a Slave Woman

20 “‘When a man goes to bed with a woman for intercourse,[aj] although she is a slave woman designated for another man and she has not yet been ransomed, or freedom has not been granted to her, there will be an obligation to pay compensation.[ak] They must not be put to death, because she was not free. 21 He must bring his guilt offering to the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, a guilt offering ram,[al] 22 and the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the Lord for his sin that he has committed,[am] and he will be forgiven[an] of his sin[ao] that he has committed.

The Produce of Fruit Trees

23 “‘When you enter the land and plant any fruit tree,[ap] you must consider its fruit to be forbidden.[aq] Three years it will be forbidden to you;[ar] it must not be eaten. 24 In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, praise offerings[as] to the Lord. 25 Then in the fifth year you may eat its fruit to add its produce to your harvest.[at] I am the Lord your God.

Blood, Hair, Body, and Prostitution

26 “‘You must not eat anything with the blood still in it.[au] You must not practice either divination or soothsaying.[av] 27 You must not round off the corners of the hair on your head or ruin the corners of your beard.[aw] 28 You must not slash your body for a dead person[ax] or incise a tattoo on yourself.[ay] I am the Lord. 29 Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute,[az] so that the land does not practice prostitution and become full of lewdness.[ba]

Sabbaths, Purity, Honor, Respect, and Honesty

30 “‘You must keep my Sabbaths and fear my sanctuary. I am the Lord. 31 Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits[bb] to become unclean by them. I am the Lord your God. 32 You must stand up in the presence of the aged, honor the presence of an elder, and fear your God. I am the Lord. 33 When a resident foreigner[bc] lives with you in your land, you must not oppress him. 34 The resident foreigner[bd] who lives with you must be to you as a native citizen among you; so[be] you must love the foreigner as yourself, because you were foreigners[bf] in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. 35 You must not do injustice in the regulation of measures, whether of length, weight, or volume.[bg] 36 You must have honest balances,[bh] honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin.[bi] I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. 37 You must be sure to obey all my statutes and regulations.[bj] I am the Lord.’”

Psalm 23-24

Psalm 23[a]

A psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd,[b]
I lack nothing.[c]
He takes me to lush pastures,[d]
he leads me to refreshing water.[e]
He restores my strength.[f]
He leads me down[g] the right paths[h]
for the sake of his reputation.[i]
Even when I must walk through the darkest valley,[j]
I fear[k] no danger,[l]
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff reassure me.[m]
You prepare a feast before me[n]
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh[o] my head with oil;
my cup is completely full.[p]
Surely your goodness and faithfulness[q] will pursue[r] me all my days,[s]
and I will live in[t] the Lord’s house[u] for the rest of my life.[v]

Psalm 24[w]

A psalm of David.

24 The Lord owns the earth and all it contains,
the world and all who live in it.
For he set its foundation upon the seas,
and established[x] it upon the ocean currents.[y]
Who is allowed to ascend[z] the mountain of the Lord?[aa]
Who may go up to his holy dwelling place?
The one whose deeds are blameless
and whose motives are pure,[ab]
who does not lie,[ac]
or make promises with no intention of keeping them.[ad]
Such godly people are rewarded by the Lord,[ae]
and vindicated by the God who delivers them.[af]
Such purity characterizes the people who seek his favor,
Jacob’s descendants, who pray to him.[ag] (Selah)
Look up,[ah] you gates.
Rise up,[ai] you eternal doors.
Then the majestic king[aj] will enter.[ak]
Who is this majestic king?[al]
The Lord who is strong and mighty.
The Lord who is mighty in battle.
Look up, you gates.
Rise up, you eternal doors.
Then the majestic king will enter.
10 Who is this majestic king?
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[am]
He is the majestic king. (Selah)

Ecclesiastes 2

Futility of Self-Indulgent Pleasure

I thought to myself,[a]

“Come now,[b] I will try[c] self-indulgent pleasure[d] to see[e] if it is worthwhile.”[f]
But I found[g] that it also is futile.[h]
I said of partying,[i] “It is folly,”
and of self-indulgent pleasure,[j] “It accomplishes nothing!”[k]
I thought deeply[l] about the effects of[m] indulging[n] myself[o] with wine
(all the while[p] my mind was guiding me[q] with wisdom)[r]
and the effects of[s] behaving foolishly,[t]
so that[u] I might discover what is profitable[v]
for people[w] to do on earth[x] during the few days[y] of their lives.

Futility of Materialism

I increased my possessions:[z]
I built houses for myself;[aa]
I planted vineyards for myself.
I designed[ab] royal gardens[ac] and parks[ad] for myself,
and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.
I constructed pools of water for myself,
to irrigate my grove[ae] of flourishing trees.
I purchased male and female slaves,
and I owned slaves who were born in my house;[af]
I also possessed more livestock—both herds and flocks—
than any of my predecessors in Jerusalem.
I also amassed silver and gold for myself,
as well as valuable treasures[ag] taken from kingdoms and provinces.[ah]
I acquired male singers and female singers for myself,
and what gives a man sensual delight[ai]—a harem of beautiful concubines.[aj]
So[ak] I was far wealthier[al] than all my predecessors in Jerusalem,
yet I maintained my objectivity.[am]
10 I did not restrain myself from getting whatever I wanted;[an]
I did not deny myself anything that would bring me pleasure.[ao]
So all my accomplishments gave me joy;[ap]
this was my reward for all my effort.[aq]
11 Yet when I reflected on everything I had accomplished[ar]
and on all the effort that I had expended to accomplish it,[as]
I concluded:[at] “All these[au] achievements and possessions[av] are ultimately[aw] profitless[ax]
like chasing the wind!
There is nothing gained[ay] from them[az] on earth.”[ba]

Wisdom is Better than Folly

12 Next, I decided to consider[bb] wisdom, as well as foolish behavior and ideas.[bc]
For what more can the king’s successor do than what the king[bd] has already done?
13 I realized that wisdom is preferable to folly,[be]
just as light is preferable to darkness:
14 The wise man can see where he is going,[bf] but the fool walks in darkness.
Yet I also realized that the same fate[bg] happens to them both.[bh]
15 So I thought to myself, “The fate of the fool will happen even to me![bi]
Then what did I gain by becoming so excessively[bj] wise?”[bk]
So I lamented to myself,[bl]
“The benefits of wisdom[bm] are ultimately[bn] meaningless!”
16 For the wise man, like[bo] the fool, will not be remembered for very long,[bp]
because[bq] in the days to come, both will already have been forgotten.[br]
Alas,[bs] the wise man dies—just like[bt] the fool!
17 So I loathed[bu] life[bv] because what
happens[bw] on earth[bx] seems awful to me;
for all the benefits of wisdom[by] are futile—like chasing the wind.

Futility of Being a Workaholic

18 So I loathed all the fruit of[bz] my effort,[ca]
for which I worked so hard[cb] on earth,[cc]
because[cd] I must leave it[ce] behind[cf] in the hands of my successor.[cg]
19 Who knows if he will be a wise man or a fool?
Yet[ch] he will be master over all the fruit of[ci] my labor[cj]
for which I worked so wisely[ck] on earth.[cl]
This also is futile!
20 So I began to despair[cm] about all the fruit of[cn] my labor[co]
for which I worked so hard[cp] on earth.[cq]
21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge, and skill;
however, he must hand over[cr] the fruit of his labor[cs] as an inheritance[ct]
to someone else who did not work for it.
This also is futile, and an awful injustice![cu]

Painful Days and Restless Nights

22 What does a man acquire from all his labor
and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth?[cv]
23 For all day long[cw] his work produces pain and frustration,[cx]
and even at night his mind cannot relax.[cy]
This also is futile!

Enjoy Work and its Benefits

24 There is nothing better for[cz] people[da] than[db] to eat and drink,
and to find enjoyment[dc] in their[dd] work.
I also perceived that this ability to find enjoyment[de] comes from God.[df]
25 For no one[dg] can eat and drink[dh]
or experience joy[di] apart from him.[dj]
26 For to the one who pleases him,[dk] God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy,
but to the sinner, he gives the task of amassing[dl] wealth[dm]
only to give[dn] it[do] to the one who pleases God.
This[dp] task of the wicked[dq] is futile—like chasing the wind!

1 Timothy 4

Timothy’s Ministry in the Later Times

Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves[a] with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings,[b] influenced by the hypocrisy of liars[c] whose consciences are seared.[d] They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creation of God is good and no food[e] is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. For it is sanctified by God’s word and by prayer.

By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters,[f] you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.[g] But reject those myths[h] fit only for the godless and gullible,[i] and train yourself for godliness. For “physical exercise[j] has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come.” This saying[k] is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance. 10 In fact this is why[l] we work hard and struggle,[m] because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people,[n] especially of believers.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness,[o] and purity. 13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture,[p] to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have,[q] given to you and confirmed by prophetic words[r] when the elders laid hands on you.[s] 15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.[t] 16 Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach.[u] Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
