2 Samuel 21

21 After the people had suffered from a famine for three successive years, David asked the Eternal One why the famine lingered, and the answer came that the nation was guilty for not making amends for the bloodlust of King Saul, who slaughtered the people of Gibeon. (The Gibeonites were not from Israel—they were related to the Amorites. Saul tried to annihilate them in his zeal for Israel and Judah, although the people of Israel had promised to spare them during the days of Joshua.) So David called for the leaders of Gibeon.

David: What can I do, what can I give you, to lift this guilt from my land so that you will honor the Eternal’s chosen people?

Gibeonite Leaders: Silver and gold won’t make things right for us with Saul’s kingdom. And it is not for us to tell you who should be subject to capital punishment in Israel.

David: I will do whatever you ask.

Gibeonite Leaders: Saul attacked us and tried to destroy us, to wipe us off the map of Israel. Give us seven of his descendants, and we will hang them on a tree in Gibeah before the Eternal, on His mountain.

David: I will give them to you.

Now the king did not give them Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson and Jonathan’s son, because of the sacred oath between David and Jonathan. But he did take Saul’s two sons by Rizpah (daughter of Aiah), Armoni and Mephibosheth, and the five sons of Merab (Saul’s daughter) that she had by Adriel (son of Barzillai the Meholathite). David had them seized and handed them over to the Gibeonites, who executed them before the Eternal One on the mountain. All seven of them died together, in the spring of the year during the first days of the barley harvest.

10 Rizpah, Aiah’s daughter, spread out sackcloth on a rock to make a place to sit; and from the time her sons died until rain fell in late autumn, she refused to let the birds or wild animals desecrate the bodies. 11 When David heard what Saul’s concubine Rizpah had done, 12 he went and gathered the bones of Saul and Jonathan (which the people of Jabesh-gilead had stolen from the place where they were hanged in the Philistine public square in Beth-shan on the day the Philistines killed Saul on Gilboa). 13 He took the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son and gathered the bones of those who had been impaled in Gibeon. 14 He had Saul and Jonathan buried in the tomb of their father Kish, in Zela in the land of Benjamin. All that David commanded was done; and afterward, God answered the prayers of the people of Israel for the land.

15 Philistia and Israel were at war again, and David and his soldiers fought them long and hard until at last he grew weary. 16 Then Ishbi-benob (who was a descendant of Raphah) announced that he had come to kill David. He carried a bronze spear, the head of which weighed nearly 10 pounds, and he carried a new sword. 17 But Abishai, Zeruiah’s son, came to David’s aid. He attacked and killed this Philistine.

David’s Men (to David): You can’t go out to fight with us any longer. If you are killed, then the lamp of Israel will go out.

18 Later the Israelites fought the Philistines at Gob; and Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, another Philistine warrior descended from the giant. 19 In another fight at Gob with the Philistines, Elhanan (son of Jaare-oregim of Bethlehem), killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was as large as a weaver’s beam. 20 Then in a battle at Gath, they fought against another famous warrior. He was a huge man with 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot—24 in all—and he was also descended from the giant. 21 When he insulted the people of Israel, Jonathan (the son of David’s brother Shimei) killed him. 22 All four of these great warriors were descended from the giant of Gath, but all of them were defeated by the skill of David and his men.

Galatians 1

Paul, an emissary[a] commissioned directly by Jesus the Anointed One and God the Father (who raised Him from the dead)—not (as some claim) an agent of men or any person— and all the brothers and sisters with me to you, the churches of Galatia.

May the grace and peace of God the Father and the Lord Jesus the Anointed live in you; He is the very Savior who rescues us from this present, perverse age dominated by evil by giving His life according to our Father’s will to deal with our sins. May God’s glorious name forever receive honor. Amen.

From the opening address, it is clear that Paul is angry with what is going on among the churches of Galatia. He feels compelled to defend himself from opponents who are attacking his call as Jesus’ emissary. Paul counters the attack by distancing himself from any human institution: he was not called by any church or committee. God the Father and the Lord Jesus commissioned Paul directly to be the emissary to the nations.

Frankly I am stunned. I cannot believe that you have abandoned God so quickly—even after He called you through the grace of the Anointed One—and have fallen for a different gospel. Actually there is only one true gospel of the Anointed, and you—because of divisive prodding by others—are accepting a distorted version which is not the gospel at all!

People are being deceived with an imitation of the true gospel, and they have bought into it. The words are nothing but twisted lies.

No matter the source of the false gospel, even if it is preached by us or a heavenly messenger, ignore it. May those who add to or subtract from the gospel of Jesus be eternally cursed! Listen again: if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than what you have accepted, may he find himself cursed!

10 Do you think I care about the approval of men or about the approval of God? Do you think I am on a mission to please people? If I am still spinning my wheels trying to please men, then there is no way I can be a servant of the Anointed One, the Liberating King.

11 Know this, dear brothers and sisters: the good news I brought to you isn’t the latest in fiction or the product of some creative mind. 12 It is not a legend I learned or one that has been passed down from person to person, ear to ear. I was gifted with this message as Jesus the Anointed revealed Himself miraculously to me. 13 Surely you are familiar with my personal history, with my dedication to the teachings and traditions of Judaism. I persecuted the church of God—in fact, I meant to destroy it. 14 I excelled in the teachings of Judaism far above other Jewish leaders, and I was zealous to practice the ways of our ancestors. 15 But God—who set me apart even before birth and called me by His grace—chose, to His great delight, 16 to reveal His Son in me so I could tell His story among the outsider nations. I didn’t confer with anyone right away, 17 nor did I go to those who were already emissaries[b] in Jerusalem. I went straight to Arabia and later returned to Damascus.

18 After living this adventurous mission for three years, I made my way to Jerusalem and spent 15 days with Cephas, whom you know as Peter. 19 But I didn’t see any emissary[c] other than James, our Lord’s brother. 20 (You can be certain that what I am offering you is an authentic account. Before God, it’s the whole truth—I wouldn’t lie.) 21 Later I journeyed to Syria and Cilicia; 22 and since I had spent so little time in Judea among the churches of the Anointed One, no one there could pick me out of a crowd. 23 But stories of my call and mission preceded me: “The very man who wanted to kill us all is now preaching the faith he once labored to destroy.” 24 And so they praised God for the miracle He did in my life.

Ezekiel 28

28 The word of the Eternal came to me with a message about the prince of Tyre.

Tyre’s troubles start not long after Judah is destroyed in 586 b.c. Nebuchadnezzar marches there and begins a siege that lasts for almost 13 years. The part of the city on the mainland is captured by Nebuchadnezzar, but the princes of Tyre continue to rule from their island palace for another two centuries. In 332 b.c. Alexander the Great will use the rubble of the mainland city to construct a bridge to the island. Soon the island of Tyre will be in ruins, as it will remain forever.

Eternal One: Son of man, go to the prince of Tyre, and give him this message. This is what I, Eternal Lord, have to say:

    Your heart is swollen with pride—
        a pride that says, “I am a god.
        I sit on a divine throne in the heart of the sea.”
    But I assure you, prince, you are nothing more
        than a mortal man—a man of mortal destiny.
    Even though you have the self-confidence of a god,
        you are made entirely of flesh and blood.
    But obviously you must be wiser than Daniel, that ancient judge in Ugarit.
        Clearly, you understand every mystery.
    You used your wisdom and discernment to amass a great fortune,
        to fill your treasuries with gold and silver.
    Your knack for trade has built your wealth,
        but your success and riches have made your heart swell with pride.

Because of Tyre’s location off the coast, she receives daily supplies and survives a long war; therefore, her ruler, Ethbaal III, has every human reason to be confident. Such confidence and wickedness is bred into him: Ethbaal’s ancestor, Ethbaal I, was a priest of their goddess Astarte and seized the throne for himself. He was a powerful prince, making political connections and spreading the worship of his goddess all over the region. Ethbaal I’s daughter, Jezebel, was famous for entrenching pagan worship in Israel, so Tyre is indirectly the root of Israel’s wickedness.

Here is what the Eternal Lord has to say:

Eternal One: Because you imagine yourself as wise as a god,
        I am going to recruit outsiders—merciless nations—to take you down.
    They will draw their swords and cut you down to size,
        attacking the beautiful things your wisdom procured and destroying your splendor.
    They will force you down to the pit,
        and you will die the death
        of those struck down in the heart of the sea.
    At that moment, will you protest to your executioners, “But I’m a god!”?
        To those who strike you down you are no god.
        To them, you are nothing more than a mortal man.
10     You will die the death of all who are uncircumcised,
        at the hand of outsiders.

Like the Israelites, the people of Tyre practice circumcision.

So said the Eternal Lord.

11 The word of the Eternal continued giving me His message.

Eternal One: 12 Son of man, sing a lament for the prince of Tyre. Tell him this is what I, the Eternal Lord, have to say:

    You were a paradigm of perfection, human life at its best.
        You had everything a leader needs: immense wisdom and perfect beauty.
13     You lived in Eden, God’s garden.
        You were clothed in magnificent splendor, covered in jewels:
    Sardius, topaz, diamond, beryl, onyx, jasper,
        lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald.
    All the mountings were made of gold,[a]
        prepared for you on the day you were created.
14     I anointed you the guardian[b] of the garden and stationed you at your post to protect it.
        You were on the divine mountain, the holy mount of God.
        There you walked among the fiery stones.
15     You were entirely pure from the day you were created,
        until wickedness crept in and was found in you!
16     Too much buying and selling—a greedy obsession!
        You became motivated to violence and did wicked things.
    Polluted and disgraced, I drove you off the mountain of God!
        I expelled you, O guardian protector, from the fiery stones.
17     Your heart swelled with pride because of your beauty and talents.
        Your hunger for fame, your thirst for glory corrupted your wisdom.
    This is why I drove you to the ground
        and made an example out of you before a company of kings.
18     You desecrated your sanctuaries
        by pursuing sin after sin and cheating in business.
    I set a flame inside of you, and it devoured you completely.
        I reduced you to a pile of ashes on the ground,
        a sight for all to see.

Ezekiel prophesies that the prince of Tyre will die violently without the benefit of a proper burial and find no peace in the afterlife.

19     All the nations who know you are appalled at what has happened to you.
        The end of your story is a horror:
        you are gone, never to return.

The prince of Tyre’s biography echoes the creation story. Adam, too, is described as a perfect and honored creation of God, given guardianship of the earth and full access to God. Expelled from paradise, wickedness becomes entrenched and spreads until God is forced to execute His judgment.

20 The word of the Eternal came to me with a message against Sidon.

Eternal One: 21-22 Son of man, face Sidon and preach to her. This is what I, the Eternal Lord, have to say:

    Look, Sidon! I am against you;
        My glory will be revealed when I prevail over you.
    They will know that I am the Eternal One
        when I have punished her
        and revealed My holy self to her.
23     I will rain down disease upon her—an epidemic of death!
        Her streets will become rivers of blood!
    The wounded will fall within her walls,
        and the battle will rage on every side!
    Then they will know that I am the Eternal One.

24 As for the people of Israel, they will no longer have to deal with the spiteful, thorny neighbors who mocked their destruction. Then they will know that I am the Eternal Lord.

25 Here is what the Eternal Lord has to say:

Eternal One: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will reveal My holiness through them with all the nations watching. They will live in their own land—the land I gave to My servant, Jacob. 26 They will live safely there, building houses and planting vineyards. They will live safely there when I punish all of their neighbors who mocked them and treated them shamefully. Then they will know that I am the Eternal their God.

Psalm 77

Psalm 77

For the worship leader, Jeduthun. A song of Asaph.

I cry up to heaven,
    “My God, True God,” and He hears.
In my darkest days, I seek the Lord.
    Through the night, my hands are raised up, stretched out, waiting;
And though they do not grow tired,
    my soul is uneasy.
I remember the True God and become distraught.
    I think about Him, and my spirit becomes weak.

[pause][a]

You hold my eyes wide open.
    I am troubled beyond words.
My mind drifts to thoughts of yesterdays
    and yesteryears.
I call to mind my music; it keeps me company at night.
    Together with my heart I contemplate;
    my spirit searches, wondering, questioning:
“What will the Lord do? Reject us for good?
    Will He never show us His favor again?
Has His loyal love finally worn down?
    Have His promises reached an end?
Has the True God forgotten how to be gracious?
    In His anger, has He withdrawn His compassion?”

[pause]

10 “I can’t help but be distraught,” I said,
    “for the power of the Most High that was once for us is now against us.”

11 I will remember the actions the Eternal has taken,
    reminisce on Your ancient wonders.
12 I will reflect on all of Your work;
    indeed, I will study all You have performed.
13 O God, Your way is so different, so distinct, so divine.
    No other god compares with our God.
14 You, God, and Your works evoke wonder.
    You have proved Your strength to the nations.
15 You used Your great power to release Your people:
    with a strong arm, You freed Jacob’s children, and Joseph’s.

[pause]

16 The waters saw You, O True God.
    The seas saw You and swelled in sorrow.
    Even the deep trembled.
17 Water poured from the clouds,
    and the sky boomed out in response
    as Your arrows of lightning flashed this way and that.
18 The sound of Your thunder whirled within the wind
    as Your lightning lit up the world.
    Yes, the whole earth trembled and shook.
19 Your way ran through the sea,
    Your path cut through great waters,
    and still no one can spot Your footprints.
20 You led Your people as a flock
    tended by the hands of Moses and Aaron.
