20 3 The exhortation of the Priest when the Israelites go to battle. 5 The exhortation of the officers showing who should go to battle. 10 Peace must be first proclaimed. 19 The trees that bear fruit must not be destroyed.
1 When [a]thou shalt go forth to war against thine enemies, and shalt see horses and chariots, and people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
2 And when ye are come near unto the battle, then the Priest shall come forth to speak unto the people,
3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye are come this day unto battle against your enemies: (A)let not your hearts faint, neither fear, nor be amazed, nor a dread of them.
4 For the Lord your God [b]goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, and to save you.
5 ¶ And let the officers speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not [c]dedicated it, let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
6 ¶ And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not [d]eaten of the fruit? let him go to return again unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another eat the fruit.
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return again unto his house, lest he die in battle, and another man take her.
8 And let the officers speak further unto the people, and say, (B)Whosoever is afraid and faint hearted, let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint like his heart.
9 And after that the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, they shall make captains of the army to govern the people.
10 ¶ When thou comest near unto a city to fight against it, (C)thou shalt offer it peace.
11 And if it answer thee again [e]peaceably, and open unto thee, then let all the people that is found therein, be tributaries unto thee, and serve thee.
12 But if it will make no peace with thee, but make war against thee, then shalt thou besiege it.
13 And the Lord thy God shall deliver it into thine hands, and thou shalt smite all the males thereof with the edge of the sword.
14 Only the women, and the children, (D)and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof shalt thou take unto thyself, and shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities, which are a great way off from thee, which are not of the cities of these [f]nations here.
16 But of the cities of this people, which the Lord thy God shall give thee to inherit, thou shalt save no person alive,
17 But shalt utterly destroy them, to wit, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee,
18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, and so ye should sin against the Lord your God.
19 ¶ When thou hast besieged a city long time, and made war against it to take it, destroy not the trees thereof, by smiting an axe into them: for thou mayest eat of them: therefore thou shalt not cut them down to further thee in the siege, (for the [g]tree of the field is man’s life).
20 Only those trees which thou knowest are not for meat, those shalt thou destroy and cut down, and make forts against the city that maketh war with thee until thou subdue it.
107 1 The Prophet exhorteth all those that are redeemed by the Lord and gathered unto him, to give thanks, 9 for this merciful providence of God governing all things at his good pleasures, 20 sending good and evil, prosperity and adversity to bring men unto him. 42 Therefore as the righteous thereat rejoice, so shall the wicked have their mouth stopped.
1 Praise [a]the Lord, because he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.
2 Let them, [b]which have been redeemed of the Lord, show how he hath delivered them from the hand of the oppressor,
3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the East and from the West, from the North and from the [c]South.
4 When they wandered in the desert and wilderness out of the way, and found no city to dwell in,
5 [d]Both hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress,
7 And led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8 Let them therefore confess before the Lord his loving kindness, and his wonderful works before the sons of men.
9 For he satisfied the thirsty soul, and filled the hungry soul with goodness.
10 They that dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in misery and iron,
11 Because they [e]rebelled against the words of the Lord, and despised the counsel of the most High,
12 When he humbled their heart with heaviness, then they fell down, and there was no helper.
13 Then they [f]cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness, and out of the shadow of death, and brake their bands asunder.
15 Let them therefore confess before the Lord his loving-kindness, and his wonderful works before the sons of men.
16 For he hath broken the [g]gates of brass, and burst the bars of iron asunder,
17 [h]Fools by reason of their transgression, and because of their iniquities are afflicted.
18 Their soul abhorreth all meat, and they are brought to death’s door.
19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivereth them from their distress.
20 [i]He sendeth his word and healeth them, and delivereth them from their [j]graves.
21 Let them therefore confess before the Lord his loving kindness, and his wonderful works before the sons of men,
22 And let them offer sacrifices of [k]praise, and declare his works with rejoicing.
23 They that go down to the [l]sea in ships, and occupy by the great waters,
24 They see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commandeth and raiseth the stormy wind, and it lifteth up the waves thereof.
26 They mount up to the heaven, and descend to the deep, so that their soul [m]melteth for trouble.
27 They are tossed to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and all their [n]cunning is gone.
28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distress.
29 He turneth the storm to calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30 When they are [o]quieted, they are glad, and he bringeth them unto the haven, where they would be.
31 Let them therefore confess before the Lord his loving kindness, and his wonderful works before the sons of men.
32 And let them exalt him in the [p]congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the Elders.
33 He turneth the floods to a wilderness, and the springs of waters into dryness,
34 And a fruitful land into [q]barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35 Again he [r]turneth the wilderness into pools of water, and the dry land into water springs.
36 And there he placeth the hungry, and they build a city to dwell in,
37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which bring forth fruitful [s]increase.
38 For he blesseth them, and they multiply exceedingly, and he diminisheth not their cattle.
39 [t]Again men are diminished, and brought low by oppression, evil and sorrow.
40 He poureth [u]contempt upon princes, and causeth them to err in desert places out of the way.
41 Yet he raiseth up the poor out of misery, and maketh him families like a flock of sheep.
42 The [v]righteous shall see it, and rejoice, and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Who is wise that he may observe these things? for they shall understand the loving kindness of the Lord.
47 The destruction of Babylon, and the causes wherefore.
1 Come down and sit in the dust: O [a]virgin, daughter Babel, sit on the ground: there is no [b]throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called, Tender and delicate.
2 Take the millstones, and [c]grind meal; loose thy locks: [d]make bare the feet: uncover the leg, and pass through the floods.
3 Thy filthiness shall be discovered, and thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a [e]man.
4 [f]Our redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his Name, the holy One of Israel.
5 [g]Sit still, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.
6 I was wroth with my people: I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand, thou didst show them no [h]mercy, but thou didst lay thy very heavy yoke upon the ancient.
7 And thou saidest, I shall be a lady forever, so that thou didst not set thy mind to these things, neither didst thou remember the latter end thereof.
8 Therefore now hear, thou that art given to pleasures, and dwellest careless, She saith in her heart, I am and none else: I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall know the loss of children.
9 But these two things shall come to thee suddenly on one day, the loss of children and widowhood; they shall come upon thee in their [i]perfection, for the multitude of thy divinations, and for the great abundance of thine enchanters.
10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness; thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy [j]wisdom and thy knowledge, they have caused thee to rebel, and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else.
11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee, and thou shalt not know the morning thereof; destruction shall fall upon thee, which thou shalt not be able to put away: destruction shall come upon thee suddenly, or thou beware.
12 Stand now among thine enchanters, and in the multitude of thy soothsayers (with whom thou hast [k]wearied thyself from thy youth) if so be thou mayest have profit, or if so be thou mayest have strength.
13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels: let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and prognosticators stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
14 Behold, they shall be as stubble: the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver their own lives from the power of the flame: there shall be no coals [l]to warm at, nor light to sit by.
15 Thus shall they serve thee, with whom thou hast wearied thee, even thy merchants from thy youth; every one shall wander to his own [m]quarters: none shall save thee.
17 1 That great whore is described, 2 with whom the Kings of the earth committed fornication. 6 She is drunken with the blood of Saints. 7 The mystery of the woman, and the beast that carried her, expounded. 11 Their destruction. 14 The Lamb’s victory.
1 Then [a]there came one of the seven Angels, which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come: I will show [b]thee the [c]damnation of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters,
2 With whom have committed fornication the kings of the earth, and the inhabitants of the earth are drunken with the wine of her fornication.
3 [d]So he carried me away into the wilderness in the Spirit, and I saw a woman sit upon a [e]scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, which had seven heads, and ten horns.
4 And [f]the woman was arrayed [g]in purple and scarlet, and gilded with gold, and precious stones, and pearls, [h]and had a cup of gold in her hand full of abomination, and filthiness of her fornication.
5 [i]And in her forehead was a name written, A mystery, [j]that great Babylon that mother of whoredoms, and abominations of the earth.
6 [k]And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of Saints, and with the blood of the Martyrs of JESUS: and when I saw her, [l]I wondered with great marvel.
7 [m]Then the Angel said unto me, Wherefore marvelest thou? I will show thee the mystery of that woman, and of that beast that beareth her, which hath seven heads and ten horns.
8 [n]The beast that thou hast seen, [o]was and is not, and [p]shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and shall go into perdition, and they that dwell on the earth, shall wonder (whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world) [q]when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
9 [r]Here is the mind that hath wisdom, The [s]seven heads [t]are seven mountains, whereon the woman sitteth: [u]they are also seven Kings.
10 [v]Five are fallen, [w]and one is, [x]and another is not yet come: and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
11 [y]And the beast that was, and is not, is even [z]the eighth, and is [aa]one of the seven, and [ab]all go into destruction.
12 [ac]And the ten horns which thou sawest, are [ad]ten kings, which yet have not received a kingdom, but shall receive power, as Kings [ae]at one hour with the beast.
13 [af]These have one mind, and shall give their power and authority unto the beast.
14 These shall fight with the [ag]Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: (A)for he is Lord of Lords, and King of Kings: and they that are on his side, called, and chosen, and faithful.
15 [ah]And he said unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, [ai]are people, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
16 And the ten [aj]horns which thou sawest upon the beast, are they that shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate, and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 [ak]For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to do with one consent for to give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God be fulfilled.
18 And that woman which thou sawest, is that [al]great city which reigned over the kings of the earth.
