1 Samuel 19

David Is Persecuted by Saul

19 Saul told his son Jonathan and all his officials that he planned to kill[a] David. But Jonathan was very fond of David, and so he told him, “My father is trying to kill you. Please be careful tomorrow morning; hide in some secret place and stay there. I will go and stand by my father in the field where you are hiding, and I will speak to him about you. If I find out anything, I will let you know.”

Jonathan praised David to Saul and said, “Sir, don't do wrong to your servant David. He has never done you any wrong; on the contrary, everything he has done has been a great help to you. He risked his life when he killed Goliath, and the Lord won a great victory for Israel. When you saw it, you were glad. Why, then, do you now want to do wrong to an innocent man and kill David for no reason at all?”

Saul was convinced by what Jonathan said and made a vow in the Lord's name that he would not kill David. So Jonathan called David and told him everything; then he took him to Saul, and David served the king as he had before.

War with the Philistines broke out again. David attacked them and defeated them so thoroughly that they fled.

One day an evil spirit from the Lord took control of Saul. He was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was there, playing his harp. 10 Saul tried to pin David to the wall with his spear, but David dodged, and the spear stuck in the wall. David ran away and escaped.

11 (A)That same night Saul sent some men to watch David's house and kill him the next morning. Michal, David's wife, warned him, “If you don't get away tonight, tomorrow you will be dead.” 12 She let him down from a window, and he ran away and escaped. 13 Then she took the household idol, laid it on the bed, put a pillow made of goats' hair at its head, and put a cover over it. 14 When Saul's men came to get David, Michal told them that he was sick. 15 But Saul sent them back to see David for themselves. He ordered them, “Carry him here in his bed, and I will kill him.” 16 They went inside and found the household idol in the bed and the goats' hair pillow at its head. 17 Saul asked Michal, “Why have you tricked me like this and let my enemy escape?”

She answered, “He said he would kill me if I didn't help him escape.”

18 David escaped and went to Samuel in Ramah and told him everything that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. 19 Saul was told that David was in Naioth in Ramah, 20 so he sent some men to arrest him. They saw[b] the group of prophets dancing and shouting, with Samuel as their leader. Then the spirit of God took control of Saul's men, and they also began to dance and shout. 21 When Saul heard of this, he sent more messengers, and they also began to dance and shout. He sent messengers the third time, and the same thing happened to them. 22 Then he himself started out to Ramah. When he came to the large well in Secu, he asked where Samuel and David were and was told that they were at Naioth. 23 As he was going there, the spirit of God took control of him also, and he danced and shouted all the way to Naioth. 24 (B)He took off his clothes and danced and shouted in Samuel's presence, and lay naked all that day and all that night. (This is how the saying originated, “Has even Saul become a prophet?”)

1 Corinthians 1

From Paul, who was called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes—

(A)To the church of God which is in Corinth, to all who are called to be God's holy people, who belong to him in union with Christ Jesus, together with all people everywhere who worship our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Blessings in Christ

I always give thanks to my God for you because of the grace he has given you through Christ Jesus. For in union with Christ you have become rich in all things, including all speech and all knowledge. The message about Christ has become so firmly established in you that you have not failed to receive a single blessing, as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be faultless on the Day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is to be trusted, the God who called you to have fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Divisions in the Church

10 By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ I appeal to all of you, my friends, to agree in what you say, so that there will be no divisions among you. Be completely united, with only one thought and one purpose. 11 For some people from Chloe's family have told me quite plainly, my friends, that there are quarrels among you. 12 (B)Let me put it this way: each one of you says something different. One says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Peter”; and another, “I follow Christ.” 13 Christ has been divided[a] into groups! Was it Paul who died on the cross for you? Were you baptized as Paul's disciples?

14 (C)I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius. 15 No one can say, then, that you were baptized as my disciples. (16 (D)Oh yes, I also baptized Stephanas and his family; but I can't remember whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 Christ did not send me to baptize. He sent me to tell the Good News, and to tell it without using the language of human wisdom, in order to make sure that Christ's death on the cross is not robbed of its power.

Christ the Power and the Wisdom of God

18 For the message about Christ's death on the cross is nonsense to those who are being lost; but for us who are being saved it is God's power. 19 (E)The scripture says,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
    and set aside the understanding of the scholars.”

20 (F)So then, where does that leave the wise? or the scholars? or the skillful debaters of this world? God has shown that this world's wisdom is foolishness!

21 (G)For God in his wisdom made it impossible for people to know him by means of their own wisdom. Instead, by means of the so-called “foolish” message we preach, God decided to save those who believe. 22 Jews want miracles for proof, and Greeks look for wisdom. 23 As for us, we proclaim the crucified Christ, a message that is offensive to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles; 24 but for those whom God has called, both Jews and Gentiles, this message is Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For what seems to be God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and what seems to be God's weakness is stronger than human strength.

26 Now remember what you were, my friends, when God called you. From the human point of view few of you were wise or powerful or of high social standing. 27 God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful. 28 He chose what the world looks down on and despises and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important. 29 This means that no one can boast in God's presence. 30 But God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God has made Christ to be our wisdom. By him we are put right with God; we become God's holy people and are set free. 31 (H)So then, as the scripture says, “Whoever wants to boast must boast of what the Lord has done.”

Lamentations 4

Jerusalem after Its Fall

Our glittering gold has grown dull;
    the stones of the Temple lie scattered in the streets.

Zion's young people were as precious to us as gold,
    but now they are treated like common clay pots.

Even a mother wolf will nurse her cubs,
    but my people are like ostriches, cruel to their young.

They let their babies die of hunger and thirst;
    children are begging for food that no one will give them.

People who once ate the finest foods die starving in the streets;
    those raised in luxury are pawing through garbage for food.

(A)My people have been punished even more than the inhabitants of Sodom,
    which met a sudden downfall at the hands of God.

Our princes[a] were undefiled and pure as snow,
    vigorous and strong, glowing with health.

Now they lie unknown in the streets, their faces blackened in death;
    their skin, dry as wood, has shriveled on their bones.

Those who died in the war were better off than those who died later,
    who starved slowly to death, with no food to keep them alive.

10 (B)The disaster that came to my people brought horror;
    loving mothers boiled their own children for food.

11 The Lord turned loose the full force of his fury;
    he lit a fire in Zion that burned it to the ground.

12 No one anywhere, not even rulers of foreign nations,
    believed that any invader could enter Jerusalem's gates.

13 But it happened, because her prophets sinned and her priests were guilty
    of causing the death of innocent people.

14 Her leaders wandered through the streets as though blind,
    so stained with blood that no one would touch them.

15 “Get away!” people shouted. “You're defiled! Don't touch me!”
    So they wandered from nation to nation, welcomed by no one.

16 The Lord had no more concern for them; he scattered them himself.
    He showed no regard for our priests and leaders.

17 For help that never came, we looked until we could look no longer.
    We kept waiting for help from a nation that had none to give.

18 The enemy was watching for us; we could not even walk in the streets.
    Our days were over; the end had come.

19 Swifter than eagles swooping from the sky, they chased us down.
    They tracked us down in the hills; they took us by surprise in the desert.

20 They captured the source of our life, the king the Lord had chosen,
    the one we had trusted to protect us from every invader.

21 Laugh on, people of Edom and Uz; be glad while you can.
    Your disaster is coming too; you too will stagger naked in shame.

22 Zion has paid for her sin; the Lord will not keep us in exile any longer.
    But Edom, the Lord will punish you; he will expose your guilty acts.

Psalm 35

A Prayer for Help[a]

35 Oppose those who oppose me, Lord,
    and fight those who fight against me!
Take your shield and armor
    and come to my rescue.
Lift up your spear and war ax
    against those who pursue me.
Promise that you will save me.

May those who try to kill me
    be defeated and disgraced!
May those who plot against me
    be turned back and confused!
May they be like straw blown by the wind
    as the angel of the Lord pursues them!
May their path be dark and slippery
    while the angel of the Lord strikes them down!

Without any reason they laid a trap for me
    and dug a deep hole to catch me.
But destruction will catch them before they know it;
    they will be caught in their own trap
    and fall to their destruction!

Then I will be glad because of the Lord;
    I will be happy because he saved me.
10 With all my heart I will say to the Lord,
    “There is no one like you.
    You protect the weak from the strong,
    the poor from the oppressor.”

11 Evil people testify against me
    and accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.
12 They pay me back evil for good,
    and I sink in despair.
13 But when they were sick, I dressed in mourning;
    I deprived myself of food;
I prayed with my head bowed low,
14     as I would pray for a friend or a brother.
I went around bent over in mourning,
    as one who mourns for his mother.

15 But when I was in trouble, they were all glad
    and gathered around to make fun of me;
strangers beat me
    and kept striking me.
16 Like those who would mock a cripple,[b]
    they glared at me with hate.

17 How much longer, Lord, will you just look on?
    Rescue me from their attacks;
    save my life from these lions!
18 Then I will thank you in the assembly of your people;
    I will praise you before them all.

19 (A)Don't let my enemies, those liars,
    gloat over my defeat.
Don't let those who hate me for no reason
    smirk with delight over my sorrow.

20 They do not speak in a friendly way;
    instead they invent all kinds of lies about peace-loving people.
21 They accuse me, shouting,
    “We saw what you did!”
22 But you, O Lord, have seen this.
    So don't be silent, Lord;
    don't keep yourself far away!
23 Rouse yourself, O Lord, and defend me;
    rise up, my God, and plead my cause.
24 You are righteous, O Lord, so declare me innocent;
    don't let my enemies gloat over me.
25 Don't let them say to themselves,
    “We are rid of him!
    That's just what we wanted!”

26 May those who gloat over my suffering
    be completely defeated and confused;
may those who claim to be better than I am
    be covered with shame and disgrace.

27 May those who want to see me acquitted
    shout for joy and say again and again,
“How great is the Lord!
    He is pleased with the success of his servant.”
28 Then I will proclaim your righteousness,
    and I will praise you all day long.
