Chapter 13

Sign and Memorial.[a] The Lord spoke to Moses, “Consecrate each firstborn to me, whatever opens the womb in Israel, whether human or animal; it belongs to me.”

Moses said to the people, “Remember this day on which you came out of Egypt, your place of slavery. The Lord brought you out from there with a mighty hand. Therefore, do not eat what has been leavened. This day you came out is in the month of Abib. When the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, that he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you shall celebrate this rite in this month.

“For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh you shall celebrate a feast in honor of the Lord. For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and there shall be nothing leavened with you. There shall be no leaven in all of your territory. On that day you shall teach your son: ‘This is because of what the Lord did for me when he brought me out of Egypt.’ And it shall be a sign on your hand and a memorial before your eyes so that the law of the Lord may be upon your lips. With a mighty hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt.[b] 10 You shall celebrate this rite at this time every year.

11 “When the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanites, as he promised you and your fathers, and he will have given it to you as a possession, 12 you shall dedicate each firstborn from the womb to the Lord. All male firstborn of your animals belong to the Lord. 13 You shall redeem every firstborn donkey with a lamb.[c] If you do not redeem it, you shall break its neck. You shall redeem each firstborn son from among his brothers.

14 “When your son asks you, ‘What is the meaning of this,’ you shall answer, ‘With a mighty arm the Lord brought us out of the land of Egypt, our place of slavery. 15 When Pharaoh was stubborn and would not let us go, the Lord slew the firstborn in the land of Egypt, the firstborn of human and animal. Because of this I sacrifice the firstborn male from every womb to the Lord, and I redeem the firstborn of my sons.’ 16 This shall be a sign on your hand and a memorial before your eyes, to remember that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.”

The Lord Went before Them.[d]

17 When Pharaoh let the people leave, God did not guide them on the road through the land of the Philistines, even though it was shorter, for God thought, “Otherwise the people, seeing they would have to fight, may change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 God guided the people along the desert road toward the Red Sea. The children of Israel, well armed, left the land of Egypt.

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph along with him, for Joseph had solemnly sworn the children of Israel, saying, “Surely God will come to visit you, and when he does you must carry away my bones.”

20 They left Succoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 The Lord went before them as a pillar of cloud during the day to guide them on their way, and as a column of fire during the night to give them light, so that they could travel day and night. 22 During the day the pillar of cloud never disappeared from the sight of the people, nor did the column of fire during the night.

Riches and Poverty[a]

The Parable of the Crafty Steward.[b] Jesus also said to his disciples: “There was a rich man who had a steward, and he was informed that this steward was squandering his property. Therefore, he summoned him and said, ‘What are these reports that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.’

“Then the steward said to himself, ‘What am I going to do, now that my master is dismissing me from being steward? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am too ashamed to beg. What I must do is to make sure that people will welcome me into their homes once I am removed from being steward.’

“Then he summoned his master’s debtors one by one. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ When he was told, ‘One hundred jars of olive oil,’ he said to the man, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and change the number to fifty.’ Then he asked another, ‘And you, how much do you owe?’ When he was told, ‘One hundred measures of wheat,’ he said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ The master commended the crafty steward because he had acted shrewdly. For the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the children of light.[c]

Application of the Parable.[d] “And I tell you: use your worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves so that, when it has been exhausted, they will welcome you into eternal dwellings.

10 “Whoever can be trusted in small matters can also be trusted in great ones, but whoever is dishonest in small matters will also be dishonest in great ones. 11 Therefore, if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not shown yourself to be trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you anything of your own?

13 “No servant can serve two masters. For you will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Teachings concerning Justice and the Judaic Law

14 A Saying against the Pharisees.[e] The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and they ridiculed him. 15 He said to them, “You people pretend to be upright when you wish to impress others, but God knows what is in your hearts. That which is highly esteemed in the eyes of men is detestable in the sight of God.

16 Sayings about the Law.“The Law and the Prophets were in effect until John. From that time the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is trying to force his way in.[f] 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one letter of the Law to be discarded.[g]

18 Sayings about Divorce.[h]“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus: A Warning

19 The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus.[i]“There was a rich man who used to dress in purple garments and the finest linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who would have been grateful to be fed with the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs would come and lick his sores.

22 “Now the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In the netherworld,[j] where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham, far off, and Lazarus by his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that during your lifetime you received many good things, while Lazarus suffered greatly. Now he is being comforted while you are in agony. 26 Moreover, between us and you a great chasm has been established, so that no one who wishes to do so can pass from our side to yours, nor can anyone pass from your side to ours.’

27 “ ‘Then I beg you, father,’ he said, ‘to send him to my father’s house, 28 to warn my five brothers, lest they too end up in this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham responded, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. Let them listen to them.’

30 “He said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 Abraham answered, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”

Let God Weigh Me on Honest Scales[a]

“I have made a covenant with my eyes
    not to look with desire upon a virgin.
For what is man’s lot prescribed by God above,
    his inheritance from the Almighty on high?
Is it not destruction for the wicked
    and disaster for wrongdoers?
Does not God see my ways
    and number all my steps?
“If I have walked in falsehood
    or hastened my steps toward deceit,
let God weigh me on honest scales;
    then he will know that I am blameless.

If My Steps Have Wandered . . .[b]

“If my steps have wandered from the path of righteousness,
    or if my eyes have led my heart astray,
    or if any stain has besmirched my hands,
then let someone else eat what I sow,
    and let my crops be uprooted.
“If my heart has been enticed by a woman
    and I have lain in wait at my neighbor’s door,
10 then let my wife grind grain[c] for another
    and let other men enjoy her.
11 For that would be a heinous crime
    and judged as a criminal offense.
12 It would be a fire that leads to Destruction[d]
    until it consumes all my possessions completely.
13 “If I have ever rejected the pleas of my male or female slaves
    when they lodged a complaint against me,
14 what will I do when God confronts me?
    What will I answer if he calls me to account?
15 Did not he who formed me in the womb also make them?
    Did not the one God create all human beings?[e]
16 “Have I ignored the needs of the poor
    or caused the eyes of widows to overflow with tears?
17 Did I ever eat my bread alone
    without sharing it with an orphan,
18 I whom God has reared like a father
    and guided ever since I left my mother’s womb?
19 “Have I ever seen a stranger in need of clothing,
    or a poor wretch with nothing to cover him,
20 whose body has not blessed me
    after being warmed with the fleece of my sheep?
21 Have I ever raised my hand against the innocent,
    knowing that my friends would support me?
22 “If I have done any of these things,
    then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder
    and let my arm be torn from its socket.
23 For then the fear of God would overcome me
    and I would be unable to stand in his presence.
24 “Have I placed my faith in gold
    and regarded it as my security?
25 Have I rejoiced in my great wealth
    and the abundance of riches in my possession?
26 [f]Have I beheld the sun when it shone
    and the moon moving in its splendor
27 and ever found my heart to be secretly enticed
    so that I blew them a kiss in homage?
28 Any of these would be a serious offense,
    for I would have been unfaithful to God above.
29 [g]“Have I ever rejoiced at the ruin of my enemy
    or exulted when evil overtook him—
30 I who would not allow my tongue to sin
    by laying his life under a curse?
31 Have not those of my household said,
    ‘Who has not eaten his meat and been sated?’
32 No stranger has ever had to spend the night in the street;
    my door has always been open to the traveler.
33 “Have I ever concealed my transgressions as others do,
    keeping my guilt buried within my breast,
34 because I feared the gossip that would ensue,
    and I was terrified at the scorn of the multitude?
If so, then I would have remained silent
    and not ventured out of doors.

35 [i]“Oh, if only I had someone to hear my defense
    and my accuser would write out his indictment!
36 I would wear it on my shoulder
    and place it on my head as a crown.
37 I would give him an account of my entire life,
    and like a prince I would present myself before him.

Concluding Oath[j]

38 “If my land has cried out against me
    and its furrows have joined in the weeping,
39 if I have eaten its produce without payment
    and caused the death of its owners,
40 then let thistles grow instead of wheat
    and noxious weeds instead of barley.”

2 Corinthians 1

Chapter 1

Greeting to the Church. Paul, an apostle[a] of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the Church of God in Corinth, and to all the saints throughout Achaia: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sufferings and Consolation.[b] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercy and the God of all consolation.[c] He consoles us in all our afflictions and thereby enables us to console others in their tribulations, offering them the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God.

For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so too, through Christ, do we receive our consolation. If we are being afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation. If we are being consoled, it is to help us to console you and give you the patience and the strength to endure the same sufferings that we endure. Our hope for you is unshaken, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, you also share in the consolations.

Brethren, we do not want you to be unaware of the hardships we experienced[d] in Asia. The burden we endured was far too heavy for us to bear, to such an extent that we even despaired of life itself. Indeed, in our hearts we felt that we were under a sentence of death. This was so that we not put our trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.

10 He delivered us from this deadly peril, and he will continue to so deliver us. He on whom we have set our hopes will deliver us again, 11 as you assist us with your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many to God on our behalf for the blessing granted to us through the prayers of so many.

A Visit Not Made[f]

12 You Are Our Boast. Indeed, this is our boast: the testimony of our conscience that in our dealings with the world, and especially with you, we have conducted ourselves with simplicity and godly sincerity, depending not on worldly wisdom but on the grace of God. 13 For we write nothing to you that you cannot read and comprehend. It is my hope that you will come to understand fully, 14 as you have already understood in part, that on the day of the Lord Jesus we will have as much reason to boast of you as you will have reason to boast of us.

15 Our Language Is Not “Yes” and “No.”[g] So certain am I of this that I had originally intended to come to you first of all and thereby reward you with a double benefit. 16 I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and then to come to you again on my return from Macedonia and have you send me forth to Judea.

17 Since that was my original intention, was I being impulsive, or do you believe that my plans are based on human considerations, ready to say “Yes, Yes” and “No, No” at the same time? 18 As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been “Yes” and “No.” 19 The Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us, that is, by Silvanus[h] and Timothy and me, was not a mixture of “Yes” and “No.” He was never anything but “Yes.”

20 In him is the “Yes” to every one of the promises of God. Indeed, it is through him that we say “Amen” to give glory to God. 21 However, it is God who enables both us and you to stand firm in Christ. He has anointed us 22 and marked us with his seal and given us the Spirit in our hearts, as a down payment of what is to come.

23 The Delay Was Intended Merely To Spare Them.[i] I call upon God as a witness that it was only to spare you that I did not come again to Corinth. 24 We do not wish to lord it over your faith, but to work together with you for your joy, because you are standing firm in your faith.
