1 Samuel 7-8

1 The Ark is brought to Kiriath Jearim. 3 Samuel exhorteth the people to forsake their sins, and turn to the Lord. 10 The Philistines fight against Israel, and are overcome. 16 Samuel judgeth Israel.

Then the men of [a]Kirjath Jearim came, and took up the Ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill: and they sanctified Eleazar his son, to keep the Ark of the Lord.

(For while the Ark abode in Kirjath Jearim, the time was long, for it was twenty years) and all the house of Israel lamented [b]after the Lord.

¶ Then Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye be come again unto the Lord with all your heart, (A)put away the strange gods from among you, and (B)Ashtoreth, and direct your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him (C)only, and he shall deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

Then the children of Israel did put away (D)Baal and Ashtoreth, and served the Lord only.

And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to [c]Mizpah, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.

And they gathered together to Mizpah, and [d]drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted the same day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.

When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpah, the Princes of the Philistines went up against Israel: and when the children of Israel heard that, they were afraid of the Philistines.

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to [e]cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he may save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

Then Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it all together for a burnt offering unto the Lord, and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel, and the Lord heard him.

10 And [as] Samuel offered the burnt offering, the Philistines came to fight against Israel: but the Lord [f]thundered with a great thunder that day upon the Philistines, and scattered them: so they were slain before Israel.

11 And the men of Israel went from Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them until they came under Beth Car.

12 Then Samuel took a stone, and pitched it between Mizpah and [g]Shen, and called the name thereof Ebenezer, and he said, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.

13 ¶ So the Philistines were brought under, and they came no more again into the coasts of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14 Also the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel, were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath: and Israel delivered the coasts of the same out of the hands of the Philistines: and there was peace between Israel and the [h]Amorites.

15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life,

16 And went about year by year to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places.

17 Afterward he returned to Ramah: for there was his house, and there he judged Israel: also he built an [i]altar there unto the Lord.

1 Samuel maketh his sons Judges over Israel, who follow not his steps. 5 The Israelites ask a King.  11 Samuel declareth in what state they should be under the King. 19 Notwithstanding, they ask one still, and the Lord willeth Samuel to grant unto them.

When Samuel was now become old, he [j]made his sons Judges over Israel,

(And the name of his eldest son was [k]Joel, and the name of the second Abijah) even Judges in Beersheba.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and (E)took rewards, and perverted the judgment.

¶ Wherefore all the Elders of Israel gathered them together, and came to Samuel unto [l]Ramah,

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: (F)make us now a King to judge us like all nations.

But the thing [m]displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a King to judge us: and Samuel prayed unto the Lord.

And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hear the voice of the people in all that they shall say unto thee: for they have not cast thee away, but they have cast me away, that I should not reign over them.

As they have ever done since I brought them out of Egypt even unto this day, (and have forsaken me, and served other gods) even so do they unto thee.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit, yet [n]testify unto them, and show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 ¶ So Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked a king of him.

11 And he said, This shall be the [o]manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to his chariots, and to be his horsemen, and some shall run before his chariot.

12 Also he will make them his captains over thousands, and captains over fifties, and to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make instruments of war, and the things that serve for his chariots.

13 He will also take your daughters and make them Apothecaries, and Cooks, and Bakers.

14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your best Olive trees, and give them to his servants.

15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give it to his [p]Eunuchs, and to his servants.

16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and the chief of your young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17 He will take the tenth of your sheep, and ye shall be his servants.

18 And ye shall cry out at that day, because of your king, whom ye have chosen you, and the Lord will not [q]hear you at that day.

19 But the people would not hear the voice of Samuel, but did say, Nay, but there shall be a king over us.

20 And we also will be like all other nations, and our king shall judge us, and go out before us and fight our battles.

21 Therefore when Samuel heard all the words of the people, he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.

22 And the Lord said to Samuel, [r]Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go every man unto his city.

Romans 6

1 He cometh to sanctification, without which, that no man putteth on Christ’s righteousness, he proveth 4 by an argument taken of Baptism, 12 and thereupon exhorteth to holiness of life, 16 briefly making mention of the Law transgressed.

What [a]shall we say then? Shall we continue still in [b]sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.

[c]How shall we, that are [d]dead to sin, live yet therein?

[e]Know ye not, that (A)all we which have been baptized into [f]Jesus Christ, have been baptized into his death?

(B)We are buried then with him by baptism into his death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead [g]to the glory of the Father, so [h]we also should (C)walk in newness of life.

(D)[i]For if we be planted with him to the [j]similitude of his death, even so shall we [k]be to the similitude of his resurrection,

Knowing this, that our [l]old man is crucified with [m]him, that the body of [n]sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not [o]serve sin,

[p]For he that is dead, is freed from sin.

Wherefore, if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also with him,

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died [q]once to sin: but in that he liveth, he liveth to [r]God.

11 Likewise think ye also, that ye are dead to sin, but are alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 [s]Let not sin [t]reign therefore in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof:

13 Neither [u]give ye your [v]members, as [w]weapons of unrighteousness unto sin: but give yourselves unto God, as they that are alive from the dead, and give your members as weapons of righteousness unto God.

14 [x]For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the Law, but under grace.

15 [y]What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the Law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 (E)Know ye not, that to whomsoever ye give yourselves as servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey, whether it be of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 [z]But God be thanked, that ye have been the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart unto the [aa]form of the doctrine, whereunto ye were delivered.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye are made the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of man, because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have given your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity, to commit iniquity, so now give your members servants unto righteousness in holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were [ab]freed from righteousness.

21 [ac]What fruit had ye then in those things, whereof ye are now ashamed? For the [ad]end of those things is death.

22 But now being freed from sin, and made servants unto God, ye have your fruit in holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

23 [ae]For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jeremiah 44

44 He reproveth the people for their idolatry. 15 They that set light by the threatening of the Lord, are chastened. 26 The destruction of Egypt, and of the Jews therein, is prophesied.

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews, which dwell in the land of Egypt, and remained at Migdol and at [a]Tahpanhes, and at Noph, and in the country of Pathros, saying,

Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah: and behold, this day they are desolate and no man dwelleth therein,

Because of their wickedness which they have committed, to provoke me to anger in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods whom they knew not, neither they nor you, nor your fathers.

Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the Prophets [b]rising early, and sending them, saying, Oh do not this abominable thing that I hate.

But they would not hear nor incline their ear to turn from their wickedness, and to burn no more incense unto other gods.

Wherefore [c]my wrath, and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they are desolate, and wasted, as appeareth this day.

Therefore now thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling out of Judah, and leave you none to remain?

In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell: that ye might bring destruction unto yourselves, and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all nations of the earth.

Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the [d]kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

10 They are not [e]humbled unto this day, neither have they feared nor walked in my law nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.

11 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will set my face against you (A)to evil, and to destroy all Judah,

12 And I will take the remnant of Judah that [f]have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt there to dwell, and they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt: they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die from the least unto the most, by the sword, and by the famine and they shall be a detestation and an astonishment, and a [g]curse and a reproach.

13 For I will visit them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have visited Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence,

14 So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah to the which they [h]have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but [i]such as shall escape.

15 Then all the men which knew that their wives had burnt incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,

16 The word that thou hast spoken unto us in the Name of the Lord, we will [j]not hear it of thee,

17 But we will do whatsoever thing goeth out of our own mouth, as to burn incense unto [k]the Queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, both we and our fathers, our kings and our princes in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then [l]had we [m]plenty of vittles and were well and [n]felt none evil.

18 But since we left off to burn incense to the Queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have had [o]scarceness of all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

19 And when we burnt incense unto the Queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes [p]to make her glad, and pour out drink offerings unto her without [q]our husbands?

20 Then said Jeremiah unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people which had given him that answer, saying,

21 Did not the Lord remember the incense, that ye burnt in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, both you and your fathers, your kings, and your Princes, and the people of the land, and [r]hath he not considered it?

22 So that the Lord could no longer forbear, because of the wickedness of your inventions, and because of the abominations, which ye have committed: therefore is your land desolate, and an astonishment, and a curse, and without inhabitant, as appeareth this day.

23 Because you have burnt incense, and because ye have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies, therefore this plague is come upon you, as appeareth this day.

24 Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people and to all the women, Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah, that are in the land of Egypt.

25 ¶ Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your [s]hand, saying, We will perform our vows that we have vowed to burn incense to the Queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her: ye will perform your vows, and do the things that ye have vowed.

26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt, Behold, I have sworn by my great Name, saith the Lord, that my Name [t]shall no more be called upon by the mouth of any man of Judah, in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord God liveth.

27 Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good, and all men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt, shall be consumed by the sword, and by the famine, until they be utterly destroyed.

28 Yet a small number that escape the sword, [u]shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah: and all the remnant of Judah that are gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine or theirs.

29 And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the Lord, when I visit you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil.

30 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will [v]give Pharaoh Hophra King of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life: as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel his enemy, who also sought his life.

Psalm 20-21

20 A prayer of the people unto God, that it would please him to hear their king and receive his sacrifice, which he offered before he went to battle against the Ammonites.

To him that excelleth. A Psalm of David.

The [a]Lord hear thee in the day of trouble: the [b]Name of the God of Jacob defend thee:

Send thee help from the Sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion.

Let him remember all thine offerings, and [c]turn thy burnt offerings into ashes. Selah.

And grant thee according to thine heart, and fulfill all thy purpose:

That we may rejoice in thy [d]salvation, and set up the banner in the Name of our God, when the Lord shall perform all thy petitions.

Now [e]know I that the Lord will help his anointed, and will hear him from his [f]Sanctuary, by the mighty help of his right hand.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the Name of the Lord our God.

[g]They are brought down and fallen, but we are risen, and stand upright.

Save Lord: [h]Let the King hear us in the day that we call.

21 1 David in the person of the people praiseth God for the victory, attributing it to God, and not to the strength of man. Wherein the holy Ghost directeth the faithful to Christ, who is the perfection of this kingdom.

To him that excelleth. A Psalm of David.

The King shall [i]rejoice in thy strength, O Lord: yea how greatly shall he rejoice in thy salvation?

Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, and hast not denied him the request of his lips. Selah.

For thou [j]didst prevent him with liberal blessings, and didst set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

[k]He asked life of thee, and thou gavest him a long life forever and ever.

His glory is great in thy salvation: dignity and honor hast thou laid upon him.

For thou hast set him as [l]blessings forever: thou hast made him glad with the joy of thy countenance.

Because the king trusteth in the Lord, and in the mercy of the most high, he shall not slide.

[m]Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies, and thy right hand shall find out them that hate thee.

Thou shalt make them like a fiery oven in time of thine anger: the Lord shall destroy them in his [n]wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

10 Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from the children of men.

11 For they [o]intended evil against thee, and imagined mischief, but they shall not prevail.

12 Therefore shalt thou put them [p]apart, and the strings of thy bow shalt thou make ready against their faces.

13 [q]Be thou exalted, O Lord, in thy strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.
