Numbers 3

The Sons of Aaron

These also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the Lord spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai.

These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister as priests. Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord when they brought strange fire before the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children, and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests in the sight of Aaron their father.

Duties of the Levites

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, and they will minister to him. They will keep his directives, and serve the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. They will keep all the instruments of the tent of meeting, and attend to the needs of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. You will give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons. They are wholly given to him from the children of Israel. 10 You will appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will attend to their priesthood, and the foreigner that approaches will be put to death.

11 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 12 I Myself have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that open the womb among the children of Israel. Therefore the Levites will be Mine 13 because all the firstborn are Mine, for on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I set apart to Me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They will be Mine. I am the Lord.

A Census of the Levites

14 The Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, saying: 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families. You will number every male from a month old and older. 16 Moses numbered them according to the word of the Lord, as he was commanded.

17 These were the sons of Levi by their names:

Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.

18 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families:

Libni and Shimei;

19 the sons of Kohath by their families:

Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel;

20 the sons of Merari by their families:

Mahli and Mushi.

These are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers.

21 From Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites. These are the families of the Gershonites. 22 Those who were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and older, those who were numbered of them were seven thousand five hundred. 23 The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the west side of the tabernacle. 24 The chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael. 25 The charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting included the tabernacle, and the tent, its covering, and the hanging for the door of the tent of meeting, 26 the hangings of the court, the curtain for the opening of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords—all the service pertaining to these.

27 Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites. These are the families of the Kohathites. 28 The number of all the males, from a month old and older, were eight thousand six hundred, keeping the guard of the sanctuary. 29 The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle. 30 The chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. 31 Their duty included the ark, and the table, and the lampstand, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary they minister with, and the hanging, and all its service. 32 Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was to be chief over the leaders of the Levites and to have the oversight of those who kept the guard of the sanctuary.

33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites. These are the families of Merari. 34 Those who were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males from a month old and older, were six thousand two hundred. 35 The chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. These were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. 36 Under the oversight and guard of the sons of Merari were the frames of the tabernacle, the bars, the pillars, the sockets, all their accessories, all the service pertaining to these, 37 and the pillars of the court all around, with their sockets, and pins, and cords.

38 But those who were to camp before the tabernacle toward the east, even before the tent of meeting on the east side, were Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the guard of the sanctuary for the guard of the children of Israel, and the foreigner who approached was to be put to death.

39 All who were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the Lord, throughout their families, all the males from a month old and older, were twenty-two thousand.

The Redemption of the Firstborn

40 The Lord said to Moses: Number all the firstborn of the males of the children of Israel from a month old and older and take the number of their names. 41 You will take the Levites for Me (I am the Lord) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the livestock of the children of Israel.

42 Moses numbered, as the Lord commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel. 43 All the firstborn males, by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those who were numbered of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

44 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock, and the Levites will be Mine. I am the Lord. 46 For those who are to be redeemed of the two hundred and seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are more than the Levites, 47 you will take five shekels[a] apiece by the poll; according to the shekel of the sanctuary you will take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs). 48 And you will give the money, by which the number of them is to be redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons.

49 Moses took the redemption money of those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites. 50 Of the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels,[b] after the shekel of the sanctuary. 51 And Moses gave the money of those who were redeemed to Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Psalm 37

Psalm 37

A Psalm of David.

Do not fret because of evildoers,
    nor be jealous of those who do injustice.
For they will quickly wither like the grass,
    and fade like the green herbs.

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land, and practice faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your judgment as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
    do not fret because of those who prosper in their way,
    because of those who make wicked schemes.

Let go of anger, and forsake wrath;
    do not fret—it surely leads to evil deeds.
For evildoers will be cut off,
    but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while, and the wicked will not be;
    you will look diligently for their place, and it will not be.
11 But the meek will inherit the earth,
    and will delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plot against the righteous,
    and grind their teeth against them.
13 The Lord will laugh at him,
    for He sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword
    and have bent their bow,
to cast down the poor and needy,
    and to slay those on the upright path.
15 Their sword will enter into their own heart,
    and their bows will be broken.

16 Better is a little that the righteous has
    than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken,
    but the Lord supports the righteous.

18 The Lord knows the days of people of integrity,
    and their inheritance will be forever.
19 They will not be ashamed in the evil time,
    and in the days of famine they will be satisfied.

20 But the wicked will perish,
    and the enemies of the Lord will be like the glory of pastures;
    they will waste away, in smoke they will waste away.

21 The wicked borrows and does not repay,
    but the righteous is gracious and gives.
22 For those who are blessed of Him will inherit the earth,
    but those who are cursed of Him will be cut off.

23 The steps of a man are made firm by the Lord;
    He delights in his way.
24 Though he falls, he will not be hurled down,
    for the Lord supports him with His hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old;
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
    nor their offspring begging bread.
26 The righteous are gracious and lend,
    and their offspring are a source of blessing.

27 Depart from evil and do good,
    and abide forevermore.
28 For the Lord loves justice,
    and does not forsake His saints;
they are preserved forever,
    but the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
29 The righteous will inherit the land,
    and dwell on it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
    and their tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of their God is in their heart;
    none of their steps will slip.

32 The wicked watch the righteous,
    and seek to kill them.
33 The Lord will not forsake them to their hand,
    nor condemn them when they are judged.

34 Hope in the Lord,
    and keep His way,
and He will exalt you to inherit the land;
    when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power,
    and spreading himself like a luxuriant tree.
36 Yet he passed away, and he was not;
    I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless man, and consider the upright,
    for the end of that man is peace.
38 But the transgressors will be destroyed together;
    the end of the wicked is to be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    He is their refuge in the time of distress.
40 The Lord will help them and deliver them;
    He will deliver them from the wicked,
    and save them, because they take refuge in Him.

Song of Songs 1

Introduction

The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.

The Woman

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
    For your love is better than wine.
Your anointing oils are fragrant,
    your name is oil poured out;
    therefore the virgins love you.
Draw me after you, let us run.
    The king has brought me into his chambers.

Friends of the Woman

We will exult and rejoice in you;
    we will remember your love more than wine;
    rightly do they love you.

The Woman

I am dark, but still lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem,
    like the tents of Kedar,
    like the curtains of Solomon.
Do not gaze at me, because I am dark,
    because the sun has looked upon me.
My mother’s sons were angry with me;
    they made me the keeper of the vineyards,
    but my own vineyard I have not kept.
Tell me, you whom my soul loves,
    where you pasture your flock,
where you make it lie down at noon;
    for why should I be like one who veils herself by the flocks of your companions?

Friends of the Woman

If you do not know, O fairest among women,
    follow in the tracks of the flock,
and pasture your young goats
    beside the shepherds’ tents.

The Man

I compare you, my love, to a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots.
10 Lovely are your cheeks with ornaments,
    your neck with chains of gold.

Friends of the Woman

11 We will make you ornaments of gold,
    with studs of silver.

The Woman

12 While the king was on his couch,
    my nard gave forth its fragrance.
13 My beloved is to me a bundle of myrrh
    that lies all night between my breasts.
14 My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms
    in the vineyards of En Gedi.

The Man

15 How fair you are, my love.
    How fair you are! Your eyes are doves.

The Woman

16 How fair you are, my beloved!
    Yes, pleasant!
    Our bed is verdant;
17 the beams of our house are cedar,
    and our rafters of fir.

Hebrews 1

God Has Spoken by His Son

God, who at various times and in diverse ways spoke long ago to the fathers through the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the world. He is the brightness of His glory, the express image of Himself, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had by Himself purged our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. He was made so much better than the angels as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did He at any time say:

“You are My Son;
    today I have become Your Father”[a]?

Or again,

“I will be a Father to Him,
    and He shall be a Son to Me”[b]?

And again, when He brings the firstborn into the world, He says:

“Let all the angels of God worship Him.”[c]

Of the angels He says:

“He makes His angels spirits,
    and His servants a flame of fire.”[d]

But to the Son He says:

“Your throne, O God, lasts forever and ever;
    a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.[e]
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
    with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”[f]

10 And,

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
    and the heavens are the works of Your hands.
11 They will perish, but You remain;
    and they all will wear out like a garment;
12 as a cloak You will fold them up,
    and they will be changed.
But You are the same,
    and Your years will not end.”[g]

13 But to which of the angels did He at any time say:

“Sit at My right hand,
    until I make Your enemies
    Your footstool”[h]?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to minister to those who will inherit salvation?
