Exodus 38

Chapter 38

The Altar of Burnt Offering. He made an altar out of acacia wood. It was five cubits long and five cubits wide and three cubits high. It had horns on its four corners and they were all one piece with it. It was covered with bronze. He also made the accessories for the altar: vessels to take away its ashes, shovels, basins, forks, and firepans. All of its utensils were made out of bronze. He made a grating for the altar, a network of bronze. He placed it under the edge of the altar so that the net hung halfway down the altar. He made four rings of bronze and placed them at the four corners of the bronze grating so that poles could be inserted. He made poles out of acacia wood and covered them with bronze. He placed the poles through the rings on the sides of the altar so it could be carried. He made the altar out of boards, hollow in the middle.

The Basin for Washing. He made the basin of bronze and its base of bronze from the mirrors[a] of the women who ministered at the door to the meeting tent.

The Courtyard. He made the courtyard. On the south side of the courtyard there was a drape of fine twisted linen, one hundred cubits long. 10 There were twenty columns with twenty bronze bases. The hooks of the pillars and their rings were made out of silver. 11 Likewise on the north side there was a drape one hundred cubits long. There were twenty columns with twenty bronze bases. The hooks of the pillars and their rings were made out of silver. 12 On the west side there were fifty cubits of drapes with ten columns and ten bases. The hooks of the pillars and their rings were made out of silver. 13 On the east side there were fifty cubits. 14 There was fifteen cubits of draping with three columns and three bases on one side. 15 On the other side of the entrance to the courtyard, there was fifteen cubits of draping with three columns and three bases. 16 All of the drapes that formed the courtyard were made of fine twisted linen. 17 The bases of the columns were made out of bronze. The hooks of the columns and the rings were made out of silver. The overlaying of their capitals and the columns of the courtyard were filleted with silver.

18 The screen for the entrance to the courtyard was made of needlework of blue, purple, and scarlet cloth and fine twisted linen. It was twenty cubits long and five cubits high, that is, wide, like the drapes of the courtyard. 19 It had four columns with their four bases out of bronze. Their hooks and the overlaying of their capitals and their bars were made out of silver. 20 All the pegs of the tabernacle and of the surrounding courtyard were made out of bronze.

21 The Materials Used.[b] These are the expenses for the tabernacle, the dwelling place of the Testimony, that Moses ordered the Levites to calculate under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 22 Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, completed what the Lord had commanded Moses to do. 23 He did this together with Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, who was an engraver and a skillful craftsman, and a weaver of blue, purple, and scarlet cloth and fine twisted linen.

24 All the gold that was used in the work—that is, for all the work of the sanctuary, which was the gold from the offering—was twenty-nine talents and seven hundred and thirty shekels, measured by the shekel of the sanctuary. 25 The silver of the assembly was measured to be one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels, measured by the shekel of the sanctuary. 26 Every person who was counted in the census twenty years old and up gave a bekah, which is worth a half-shekel according to the measure of the sanctuary. There were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty men. 27 The one hundred talents were used to make the bases of the sanctuary and the bases for the veil. One hundred talents were used for the one hundred bases, or one talent for each base. 28 The one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels were used for the hooks for the pillars, and for overlaying and filleting their tops. 29 The bronze presented in the offering amounted to seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels. 30 With it were made the bases for the entrance to the meeting tent, the altar of bronze with the netting of bronze, and all the accessories for the altar, 31 the bases for the courtyard, the bases for the gate to the courtyard, and all the pegs of the tabernacle and all the pegs of the surrounding courtyard.

John 17

The Priestly Prayer of Jesus[a]

Chapter 17

Knowledge of the Father and the Son.[b] After saying this, Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,

“Father, the hour has come.
Glorify your Son,
so that your Son may glorify you,
since you have given him authority
over all people,
so that he may give eternal life
to all those you have given him.
And eternal life is this:
to know you,
the only true God,
and the one you have sent,
Jesus Christ.
“I have glorified you on earth
by completing the work
that you entrusted to me.
So now, Father,
glorify me in your presence
with the glory I had with you
before the world began.

The Son and the Disciples[c]

“I have made your name known
to those whom you gave me from the world.
They were yours,
and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word.
Now they have come to understand
that everything you gave me is from you.
For the words you gave to me
I have given to them,
and they have accepted them
and know with certainty
that I have come from you,
and they have believed that you sent me.
“It is for them that I pray.
I do not pray for the world,
but for those you gave me
because they are yours
10 Everything I have is yours,
and everything you have is mine,
and through them I have been glorified.
11 I will remain no longer in the world,
but they will still be in the world
while I will be coming to you.
“Holy Father,
protect by the power of your name
those you have given me,
so that they may be one,
even as we are one.
12 While I was with them
I protected them by your name
that you have given me,
and I kept them safe.
Not one of them was lost,
except the one destined to be lost,[d]
so that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
13 “Now I am coming to you,
and I say these things
while I am still in the world
so that my joy may come
to full measure in them.
14 I have given them your word,
and the world has hated them
because they do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.
15 I am not asking you
to take them out of the world,
but I do ask you
to protect them from the evil one.
16 They do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.
17 “Consecrate them in the truth.
Your word is truth.
18 As you sent me into the world,
so have I sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I consecrate myself,
so that they too may be consecrated in truth.

The Disciples and the Church To Come[e]

20 “I pray not only on behalf of these,
but also for those who through their word
will come to believe in me.
21 May they all be one.
As you, Father, are in me
and I in you,
may they also be in us
so that the world may believe
that you have sent me.
22 “The glory that you have given me
I have given to them,
so that they may be one,
as we are one,
23 I in them and you in me,
that they may become completely one,
and thus the world may know
that you have sent me
and that you have loved them
even as you have loved me.
24 “Father, allow those you have given me
to be with me where I am,
so that they may behold my glory,
which you have bestowed on me
because you loved me
before the foundation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father,
the world has not known you;
I have known you,
and they have known that you have sent me.
26 I have made your name known to them,
and I will make it known,
so that the love with which you loved me
may be in them, and I in them.”

Proverbs 14

Chapter 14

Righteousness Is a Sign of a Nation’s Greatness[a]

Wisdom builds herself a house,
but Folly tears down hers with her own hands.
One whose conduct is upright fears the Lord,[b]
but one whose paths are crooked despises him.
The words of a fool ensure a rod for his back,[c]
but the lips of the wise keep them safe.
Where there are no oxen, the barn is empty of grain,
but abundant crops come through the strength of the ox.
A truthful witness does not lie,
but a false witness lies incessantly.[d]
In vain does a scoffer[e] seek wisdom,
but knowledge comes easily to the man of discernment.
Do not remain in the presence of a fool,
for you will not gain any wisdom there.
The prudent possess the wisdom to follow the right way,
but the folly of fools misleads them.
Fools see no need to atone for guilt,
but the upright do so and enjoy God’s favor.
10 The heart knows its own grief best,
and no one else can share its joy.
11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will stand firm.
12 There is a way that seems right to a man,
but the end of it leads to death.
13 Even at times of laughter the heart may be sad,
and joy may end in grief.
14 The perverse man suffers the consequences of his ways,
while a good man reaps what his deeds deserve.
15 A simple man believes everything he hears,
but a prudent man carefully considers every step.
16 A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil,
but the fool is reckless and shows no restraint.
17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly,
but a prudent man is long-suffering.
18 The simple are adorned with folly,
but the prudent have knowledge as their crown.
19 Evil men will bow down before the good,
and the wicked will do so at the gates of the righteous.
20 The poor man is disliked even by his neighbor,
but one who is wealthy never lacks for friends.
21 Anyone who despises his neighbor is a sinner,[f]
but blessed is he who is kind to the poor.
22 Do not those who hatch evil go astray?
But those who plan good are loyal and faithful.
23 Diligent labor always yields profit,
but idle conversation only leads to poverty.
24 The crown of the wise is their riches;
the garland of fools is their folly.
25 A truthful witness saves lives;
anyone who utters lies is an impostor.
26 He who fears the Lord[g] provides strong security,
and in him one’s children will find a refuge.
27 The fear of the Lord[h] is a fountain of life
enabling a man to avoid the snares of death.
28 Many subjects ensure the glory of a king,
but if his subjects are few, he is of no importance.
29 A patient man shows good sense,
but a quick-tempered man displays the height of folly.
30 A tranquil heart gives life to the body,
but envy causes the bones to rot.
31 He who oppresses the poor insults their Creator,
but the one who is kind to the needy[i] does him honor.
32 The evildoer is undone by his malice,
but the upright finds refuge in his integrity.
33 Wisdom finds a home in an understanding heart,[j]
but she is not found in the heart of fools.
34 Righteousness is a sign of a nation’s greatness,
    but sin degrades any people.
35 A king favors a prudent servant
but is angry with a shameful servant.

Philippians 1

Introduction

Chapter 1

Address.[a] Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with their bishops and deacons: grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Joyful Prayer for the Philippians.[b] I give thanks to my God every time I think of you. I always pray for you, interceding for you with joy because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this: that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion on the day of Christ Jesus.[c]

It is only right for me to feel this way toward you, because I hold you in my heart, for you have all shared with me in God’s grace, both during my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. Indeed, God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

And for this I pray: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and full insight 10 to enable you to discover what is really important, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11 filled with the fruits of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

News and Instructions

12 To Live Is Christ.[d] Brethren, I want you to know that what has happened to me has actually helped spread the gospel, 13 for my imprisonment has become known not only throughout the praetorium[e] but to everyone else as well. 14 And the majority of the brethren having taken encouragement in the Lord from my imprisonment, dare more than ever to proclaim the word without fear.

15 It is true that some are proclaiming Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others are doing so with goodwill. 16 These latter ones do so out of love, aware that I have been put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not in sincerity, but in an effort to increase my suffering while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter, as long as in every way, with false motives or true, that Christ is proclaimed? And in that I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and with the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will result in deliverance for me. 20 It is my firm expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but will act with complete fearlessness, now as always, so that Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by my life or by my death.

21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.[f] 22 But if I continue living in the body, that will mean fruitful work for me. Hence, I do not know which I should choose. 23 I am pulled in opposite directions. My desire is to depart and to be with Christ, for that is far better, 24 but, it is a more urgent need for you that I remain in the body.

25 Since I am convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with all of you to ensure your progress and joy in the faith. 26 Thus, you will rebound with joy in Christ Jesus when I return to be with you once again.

27 Striving and Suffering for Christ.[g] Only live in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or simply hear news of you from a distance, I will know that you are standing firm and united in spirit, striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28 and being in no way intimidated by those who oppose you.

This will be a clear sign to them of their forthcoming destruction as well as of your salvation. All of this is in accord with God’s design. 29 For it has been granted you not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him. 30 You are taking part in the same struggle that you have seen in me and that you now hear I am experiencing.[h]
